I'd make one anyway, the downtown area can get busy. We were eating lightly, so ordered off the app menu. I ordered scallops, comes with a haddock and leek cream sauce. My wife had the crown prince pumpkin soup and a side salad. All was delicious! I think everyone working stopped to check on us, so the staff is lovely and attentive. Having eaten lightly, we rewarded ourselves by order dessert, a buttermilk pancetta with quince a biscuit crumb. Another delicious hit. Fine place, highly recommended.

Although the place was quite fancy, and we were not, we were still treated very well and didn't feel out of place. The ambience was very chill with great music, super art, and efficient service. They have 1, 2, and 3 course meals with wonderful choices across the board. I was gunning for the 3 courses and fortunately the server said that they wait to take the dessert order because it is a lot of food. And it was! For the first course I ordered the mussels and fish cake, which was served in a velvety creamy sauce and surprisingly also came with a perfectly poached egg, which only added to the richness. This could've easily been doubled from 3 to six mussels and from 1 fish cake to two to make a main course, and I wish it was, because it was one of the most delicious seafood dishes I've had in a long time! For the second course I got the halibut with potato croquettes, served over a romesco sauce base with a little bit of cream sauce and some kale garnish. It was cooked perfectly, but after the first course, I wanted to be wowed again. It was tasty, but I like a spicier romesco sauce, and it could've been wonderfully balanced with the same cream sauce the mussels were served with. Very good dish, just not quite what I was looking for. My teenager got the roast beef, medium rare, topped with cloves of roasted garlic. It was served with mashed potato, a crusted mashed potato fritter, whole roasted carrot and parsnip or turnip, bits of kale and Yorkshire pudding. All were cooked perfectly and even the vegetables were gobbled down like candy, which is unusual for my kiddo. Although we were the first customers of the day, by the time we left most of the restaurant was full of happy diners, many of whom seemed to be regulars. I can see why. I imagine this is the kind of place where they get to know what you like and aim to make you happy :)

I hate it when restaurants do this, I can understand it for Christmas party bookings, but dislike when deposits are requested throughout the year. It would prevent me from returning with a large party in future. It's just a hassle trying to collect money from people you won't necessarily be seeing before an evening out. Alternatively one person has to cover the deposit before the meal, which is unfair and leaves them out of pocket until the night out. Other than this we had a good overall experience. Waiting staff were excellent and the menu is huge with a vast selection of dishes, even plenty of veggie options - burgers, pizzas, pastas etc. I ordered vegetarian fajitas which were served with a side of fries, 3 fajita pancakes, a large sizzling plate of mixed veg (mushrooms, peppers, onions, tomatoes) plus guacamole, sour cream and salsa. The guacamole and salsa weren't fresh, instead they seemed quite processed. But it was good food - not great - but filling, tasty and reasonable for the price. Our whole party enjoyed their meals. We also ordered dessert and the Banoffee Pie was absolutely gorgeous- though I did have dessert envy when I saw the Nutella Dough Balls some of the others ordered! Ginger, gin, beer and plenty of wine flowed. In total two courses, drinks and tips cost approximately £35 per person. A good night was had by all. This is a nice, casual, relaxed restaurant and I would return - but not with a large party as I dislike the insistence on a deposit and enforced service charge. Whilst I recognise the reasoning for these charges and appreciate they are becoming common in a lot of restaurants, I will primarily take my custom to establishments who don't insist on a deposit. A good, solid 3.5 stars from me...

But, I had over looked this recently renovated restaurant, built into the foundations of the red bricked building. Oxford Exchange is a superbly welcoming chique bohemian restaurant. Surrounded in black, leather and warmly lit the long sloping restaurant leads to a semi-open kitchen at the rear of the premises. A large bar and small seated balcony for lunch hours complete the set-up. The food is right up my street. A combination of rich meaty main courses, zesty starters and interesting desserts. On my first trip I had deep-fried goats cheese balls served with a acidic chilli salsa. Superbly tart and creamy cheese balanced perfectly by crisp shallot, fresh cubes of tomato and puckering chilli. The main. A chunk of well sourced rib-eye steak, crab claws and huge prawns. A modern take on the traditional surf and turf, the steak was gamey and woody, hugely flavoured and balanced perfectly by the clean slight iodine character from the freshest local crab. All brought together with a nutty beurre noisette. This was served with a rich fruity Rioja. The prices are very reasonable, the surroundings warm and welcoming, the service fast and friendly and the food absolutely superb. This is an often over-looked little eatery which demands your attention.

I had the 6oz chicken Memphis burger and it was huge! The 12oz was also ordered at my table and it was massive! Not one for the faint hearted. It was delicious. Dimmed with a vegetarian friends and on first glance the menu appeared to have no veggie options but after asking the waitress she let us know that there was separate menu for vegetarians and a decent selection. The staff were excellent and even helped to resolve a problem we had with our order (my fault, not theirs) in excellent style. Maybe I've been watching too many American films... My boyfriend, his parents, his granda and I all descended upon Blue Chicago for my boyfriend's 21st birthday lunch. On a chilly Sunday in January, this place was absolutely packed! We were led to a small booth, which was far too tiny for all five of us, but were moved when another, larger booth had been vacated. This style of restaurant doesn't allow for big groups mind you, and even in the bigger booth, we were slightly cramped. However, the friendly waitresses (not a roller-skate in sight) were great, and the food was delicious. Chicken goujons, salad and steak were all had at our table...not a critical comment about any of them. The portions were huge, particularly for lunchtime, but I love getting my money's worth, so that was definitely a plus. Without a doubt, the best moment was when the 60s soft rock music was replaced by an incredibly cheesy version of 'Happy Birthday'. It did take me a few moments to realise that the huge cake coming towards us was for my boyfriend, who was slightly embarrassed by this stage. Obviously his parenst had arranged this with the restaurant, but it really was a lovely touch. Grabbing some cake, my boyfriend and I rolled out of Blue Chicago, our stomachs fit to burst. I'll definitely be doing that sometime again soon. Perhaps not the rolling though.

Fashioned on US grill houses and boasting some impressive décor I knew I was in for a treat as soon as I walked in and caught the first waft of the grill. The place is kitted out impressively with a large long bar, plenty of prints on the wall and on the day we were in the fire was roaring. Settling in one of the booths we perused the substantial menu. Meat eaters are well serviced though there were plenty of veggie options as well. Settling for something called a Western Burger I must admit I was not disappointed when it arrived. It was huge and covered in a lovely smoky BBQ sauce and the plate of chips was immense, missing the starter was definitely a wise choice for us. The bar also did us a couple of nice pints which washed the food down nicely. In fact so nicely, what with the roaring fire and comfy seats we were loathe to leave and actually stayed on for a few more afterwards. A nice little surprise tucked away up this street, I think the prices were maybe more 'hotel-like' than I would have preferred but the décor and ambience more than made up for it. Pros: Excellent food, not busy. Cons: Pricey.

Coast is a favourite of many local Holywood residents and trust me these residents know their food. The interior decor is simple yet extremely effective, there seems to be a focus on what they serve rather than what the place looks like, not that it's shabby inside, far from it. It's plush decor stands the test of time. It's not huge inside so if you want to visit I would suggest booking, especially at the weekend. They have recently placed a few tables outside so alfresco dining is now an option. Food wise it's excellent. Being so close to the sea I would suggest opting for seafood and would recommend trying their mussels in white wine and garlic sauce along with fresh ciabatta, for dipping of course. Coast is fully licensed so you can grab a glass of wine to accompany your food - the wine list is pretty extensive. The staff are great, there's a good mix of experienced servers as well as those who are taking up part time roles between their studies but don't worry the service never changes - top class! Can't recommend Coast enough - the bill won't break the bank but you'll feel like it should cost more than it does!
