Build a Burger is a good wee spot on Botanic-fastfoodforstudents-Avenue, perfect for a quick burger for lunch. As the name suggests, you can make up your dream burger from scratch i.e. choosing your bun through to what meat you want and all the extra garnishes - there is a wide range of veggies, sauces etc. It was quite busy when I visited but service is pretty quick. Their chips is probably the best nearby. My only negative criticism would be that I was asked what I want on my chips only when I was at the checkout so could not quite have a look at the counter when making this life-changing decision (haha)

Best burger in Belfast - delicious. Veggie burger + mature cheddar, salad, olives, sundried tomato, garlic mayo & onion chutney.

I initially reviewed Build-A-Burger giving them a 4 but feel I have to up this to a 5 star rating as their food's just so delicious. They have the best vegetarian and vegan burger options in Belfast and their chips are amazing. I love the fact they have a couple of veggie burger options - a micro protein burger or a spicy bean burger - no other chip shop I know offers such good veggie burger options. Plus the burgers are super massive and tasty and you can choose your own breads and fillings from a huge range of options. The fillings on offer cover everything from the usual burger accompaniments to options such as olives, sundried tomatoes, rocket leaves and a huge range of sauces and dressings. So you can have a standard, gourmet or any weird and wonderful burger you can think up. Truly yummy grub.

Barking Dog Restaurant - beef shin burger is definitely not your average burger

I've had my fair share of memorable burgers from coast to coast in America, but just glancing at a picture of the beef shin burger transports me back across the pond to the Barking Dog. I remember the few days I spent in Belfast fondly and of the many memories, my meal at the Barking Dog was a definite highlight. In a rather quaint and charming neighborhood, I took a nice short stroll from my Airbnb and came across this gem of an establishment and decided I had to check it out. I had a nice beer to start, and it wasn't a Guinness because stouts aren't my thing, but whatever it was I remember it being excellent and local. Undoubtedly you could make this place a regular haunt and there is no shortage of drinks and food options to make this a go-to for a date, celebration, or a quick meal. The staff are welcoming, kind, and helpful and the general atmosphere is chill. The food for me was ethereal - a burger isn't just a burger here and what you get when you bite into the beef shin burger is a little slice of Heaven. Moist and tender are a given but the taste is just so divine with the caramelized onion, cheddar, and horseradish mayo melding into an union of perfection. It's hard not to describe one of the most memorable meals of my life in such hyperbole but the vivid recall I have of this particular place is uncanny and merits all the praise I can heap upon the fine folks that run the place. If timing had worked out, I would have eaten as meals here as I could have but I'll thank my lucky stars for at least giving me one opportunity to eat such a wonderful burger at such a wonderful eatery. A+ and a definite must when visiting Belfast.

I walked up the dark stairs to be greeted by one of the most friendly waitresses you are ever likely to meet. She sat me at a table of four even though I was on my own which made me feel less of a loser. I sat down and browsed the menu made up of various burgers. I was going to go for the double cheese burger when the waitress came over and showed me their offer. A double cheese burger, fries and a drink for £8! Unreal! I obviously went for that deal, helpfully guided by the waitress. The food took about 10 minutes to come, the chips were served on a tray and the burger dame covered in foil. Packed lunch style! The chips were deep fried but still had a potatoey consistency. The burger was American style just the way I like it. A soft bun and a tender burger patty with plenty of fresh salad. Incredible! The decor is dive style! Think graffiti! They have an alcohol licence too so if you fancy a beer and burger knock yourself out! Easy five stars, for service alone. This is my kind of place, can't wait to go back with some company!

I sort of found it strange that this place opened around the time that Five Guys appeared in Victoria Square, given that it has basically the exact same menu as Five Guys, with the exact same idea of it being a sort of "build your own" with as many toppings as you want. Kind of felt like they were trying to ride the coat-tails of Five Guys, but unfortunately they don't seem to be doing a very good job of it. It has the same high price as Five Guys (for 2 people, one having a double burger with bacon, the other having a single burger with cheese, some angry fries to share and two milkshakes, it was £24), but unfortunately it doesn't quite have as much of an appeal in terms of the quality of the food. The burgers are quite dry, they're extremely messy, which isn't a great thing if you're trying not to spill it all over yourself, the redeemer is the crack sauce which is pretty great. The fries are strange, they're the same quality as you would get from a good chip shop, but I don't think they goes very well with the whole American restaurant aesthetic they're going for. Really, if you're wanting to support local, eat here. If you're wanting to have something a bit more put together but for the exact same price, go eat at Five Guys.

This place has been hyped up loads in the media and online so I was really excited to try their grub. Yesterday Belfast was absolutely hiving so it probably wasn't the best idea to pop in to Five Guys at 1pm. This may have slightly tainted my experience. On entrance a staff member handed us a paper menu and ushered us towards the counter to order, the queues were huge but the staff coped admirably working their way through the line. The ordering system is straight forward. Order at the till, you're given a number and then you wait at the service area to grab your order. This seemed to confuse people and rather than line up and wait for their food everyone huddled together in a semi circle around the guy handing the brown bags out. Once you get your food you then have the choice either to take out or eat in. The only problem with eating in is there is nowhere near enough space to sit in. Yesterday every table was occupied and as the seconds ticked by our food got colder and colder - a real pet hate of mine. We eventually sat down at a booth beside other diners. The food itself was OK, nothing special. I ordered a burger with Jalepenos but these were completely devoid of flavour adding nothing but extra crunch to the burger. The burger patty was nice but not out of this world. The major bonus were the chips. They were 'real' and you could tell they had been freshly prepared in house. The price is what will get you! £21 for 2 meals and I didn't even have a drink!? To me that seems extortionate, especially when you can't get a seat to sit down and eat your meal. In my opinion there's plenty of local places in Belfast doing better food than Five Guys without the pomp and ceremony so why not spend £20 there? Definitely worth a try to ease your curiosity but I personally wouldn't rush back. 2.5 Stars!
