This place is a solid 5. Admittedly chosen after a full day of Pub Crawling, we ordered way too many burgers and tacos because everything sounded pretty good. So happy with our choices because this was some of the best food we had in our entire trip. Even 'just burgers and fries' they offered unique toppings, as well as offering some unique craft beers in bottles-we hadn't seen on any tap list. I ordered the Black Pudding Burger-which was the best meal on my trip. The burger was massive and stacked with juicy, bold flavor toppings. I also had the side salad, which was zestier than I expected. My hubby ordered the Champion BBQ burger, also super juicy, stacked high with toppings. Friends ordered one of each taco, and each was better than the last bite-making it hard to pick a favorite. I wish I could have gotten another burger on another night, it's worth it! I was greeted upon entering the restaurant, and was given a choice of full menu inside or a limited patio menu if I was going to sit outside. It's nice to find a place that has big windows for looking out at a gorgeous day and also patio seating for those who want to feel the sunshine on their face. This place has a great vibe overall, very spacious inside with lots to look at. Menu seems to have a little something for everyone. I decided on the tempura-battered cod fish tacos and they were really good, especially the chipotle ranch sauce (or whatever creamy spicy something was on them!). read more

This place for a Pub is a solid 4 stars and that is pretty darn good in my book. Guinness and drinks were as expected, satisfying. The food was so much better than expected. So, about the food. We ordered way too much food but we wanted to try a bunch of stuff and we were all very happy with our choices. I ordered some wings and the foot long chili dog. The wings were smaller in size than we typically get back in the states but they were cooked perfectly. Nice and crispy and just enough sauce. The chili dog was my favorite. If I lived in the area I would come back here just for the chili dog and a Guinness. I thought there was no way I could finish the whole thing but it was so good I did! So good. I visited Bootleggers on Thursday 9 June and enjoyed it immensely. Service, food, ambience and drinks were very, very good. I opted for a Falafel Vegi Burger, French Fries and aioli. French Fries were good but a bit soggy however the burger was delicious with great flavours of spiced chickpea, pistachios, peppers, cheese, lettuce, tomato and ranch sauce. One of the best veggie burgers I've had in a long time. Additionally I had a Rhubarbarian Cocktail which was tangy and a tasty pint of Hoegaarden. There are a couple of Vegetarian burger options, nachos, tacos and sides. Though it's a shame such items aren't clearly marked on the menu with a V to avoid confusion. I wanted to try the Poutine Fries but on asking our waiter if they were suitable for Vegetarians he checked with the chef and sadly they contain veal stock. Clearly marked Vegetarian options would be a bonus. There's free WiFi, a relaxed bar-type vibe, cool American-style decor and comfortable table booths. I thought the music a bit loud and would have loved for it to be turned down, but my dining companion Nicola S seemed to think it was fine and that I'm just getting old hahahahaha! Wasn't fussed at the place that was here before, but we LOVE Bootleggers. The do a side called 'Poutine' which is chips with cheese and peppered sauce. This is absolutely delicious! Their vegetarain 5 bean nacho side is also fantastic. My partner had the pigout burger which was a beef burger with loads of pulled pork and he said it was amazing. I had the chilli beef tacos and loved them! Definitely a most welcome improvement in this incarnation, we are definitely fans and I can't wait for our next visit! Bootleggers hasn't really changed from its alley cat days which in some ways is good but proves that the name change was for reputational purposes only and not for any way to improve. Portions are big and cocktails are tasty and still has the hipster vibe. My old bug bear of just wanting a plate is evident here with food in buckets and boards instead. However my portion of chicken goujons with coronation coleslaw and corn on the cob was very filling that no additional side was needed. Not going to compare this to Alley Cat. I still feel it's entirely unfair how they were put under blast by certain publications, even though they took adequate control of the circumstances that caused the previously extremely popular Belfast haunt to close. Joke is on them though, since Bootleggers is now jam-packed pretty much every night. In regards to the place itself, it's alright. I mean it can be noisy, it's a bit scrappy looking but nothing terrible. The staff seem to be stretched a bit thin due to how popular it is, but that was expected. The food? Messy. I get it, tacos are meant to be messy. But really, charge a little bit less, put a little bit less inside them, nobody will forgive you for doing that if it means they don't have to constantly keep an eye out on their clothing. Taste wise? Yeah, it was alright, nothing to write home about but it wasn't terrible. I think after another few months they'll find their feet, but only if they keep trying to improve the food. The drinks are grand, but that isn't going to carry a place like this so close to the city center anymore, especially since half of the location is an eating area. My main worry would be that they see their level of popularity currently (which is very high, for what it's worth) and use that as an excuse to just stick to the same old. read more

Chips and sweet potatoes covered with garlic,bacon,cheese and sour cream. The tacos where a let down this time around. They where lush before. This time they where to spicy. They where not suppose to be. Kitchen would need more consistency where this is concerned. I would not order them again. Waitress gave is 10% off the bill to make up for it. Staff are good. Lots of seating. Price is also decent. Not a fan of their cocktails. They are not flavour blended as well as other places. The names and ingredients are tempting though. First up, I love the new decor - classy yet rustic - I think that was the look they were going for. It has the feeling of a hidden prohibition alcohol den, the cat look had definitely outstayed it's welcome and this refit suits the vibe perfectly. In terms of the food I liked it but I didn't love it - the chef explained to me that it's still a work in progress with plenty of tweaking still to be done. This is music to my ears because I felt like the wings I had were one grain of salt, one herb or even an extra 1 minute away from being absolute perfection. One thing that was perfect was the chocolate and peanut butter milkshake - you've got to try it! But beware they are made with real peanuts and the straws are quite wide so before you know it you could have a peanut in the back of your throat. Word of warning! Having been a fan of alley cat in the past I was dubious about this 'upgrade' on the look and decor about bootleggers but I was pleasantly surprised at the laid back feel of the place and chilled staff. I got a Pepsi and a burger. The burger came with battered pickles. I love batter but hate pickles so I had a tricky decision on my hands here. This is a great spot in the heart of Belfast that seems to get better with each visit. If you're a fan of cocktails and whiskey, this is not a place to be underestimated and you will most certainly find a different variety of what is on offer in other bars within the city. Not to be confused with DJ's or Remixes We came here on a Friday night, looking for somewhere different. Friends had told us this place had a bit of a checkered past, but we want to give it a go. The place was packed! This is always a good sign. We had to wait 10 mins or so for a table, but it was worth it. The theme of this place screams American Diner as the menu is pretty much burgers / wings and fries. There was live music on and a buzzing atmosphere - so immediately i'm a fan. Some drawbacks - They don't do "Starters" everything arrives at once. This is a little annoying as if you fancied some wings to share and a main, by the time you get to your main, its cold. Its not a deal breaker though, we will certainly be back. Oh and the student discount was a added bonus. Give this place a try and forget the past - even the poorest businesses can thrive under new management and a renewed focus on H&S. read more

Bootleggers is a great wee haunt for Burger, Chips and Milkshake. A great take on the classic American diner theme with a few nice little perks on the menu. When I was there I had the three mini tacos which were great and a side of Cheesy pepper sauce fries. The food is good and certainly hits the spot in a hunger phase. Inside is pretty cool with American diner style seating booths and the staff are friendly. Great for kids or pigging out but its not up there with fine dining. Considering where it is there is a lot of choice in the immediate area so it wouldn't always pop up in my head of my first choice of place to go for a bite. Still in saying that, its by far from being bad. I think just where it is, there is a saturation of great food places a stones throw away. read more

Bootleggers is a great American style rustic diner with a large bar attached and outdoor seating nearby Victoria Square. Food here is excellent...mainly burgers, tacos, chicken and fries. They also have a few veggy options. I recently had their beef patty topped with brie, caramelised onion and aioli and served in a toasted brioche bun. It was so good I practically inhaled it! Everytime I visit I just have to have a portion of their 'Parful' fries, they are 100% Parful and extremely more-ish. It's a bowl of mixed sweet potato and normal fries topped with bacon bits, garlic, parmesan and aioli. The portion is huge and probably best shared with someone. Bootleggers is casual and relaxed. I've never made a reservation as they can normal sort you a table pretty quickly and if there's a short wait you can always have a drink in the bar and they will come get you. Love this place!!! Firstly, it has a really good selection of beer AND the staff know what they're talking about, which is a big plus. We visited on a Friday evening and there was live music, which was really cool. The next thing is the food- this is proper comfort food, and its GOOD! On Sunday afternoon I was so hungover and in need of a fixer (common occurrence). The only thing that would fix it was chicken wings and a Coke. We were already in town doing a bit of shopping (not helping the hangover) and decided to give Bootleggers a go, have been to this place on manys an occasion in all its different guises, And have always had a decent enough meal, it was a favourite haunt of mine back in the day for a night on the tiles but it's relaxed a bit and it finding its feet as a causal bar/eatery. It has a diner feel to it, with the boots and the decor, it was great to sit in a window seat and watch the world go by, all cosy and hungover. The buffalo wings were ordered and were perfectly cooked, will certainly be back for them again but alas no Coke, only Pepsi, but I can forgive them for that. They had milkshakes too if you are particularly hungover. My bf had a Mexican burger, and his plate was polished off so that's a good sign he enjoyed it. This is the perfect place to go before heading out for a night in Belfast, next time I go I'll hopefully be in the mood to try their interesting cocktails! read more

A load of us were judging 9 cocktails upstairs at the Bootleggers this evening. The mixologists were representative of establishments around NI. Whilst we judged the cocktails we were treated to some fine nibbles by the excellent staff. We had nachos with dips, BBQ wings, pork sliders, sweet potato fries and chicken or pork soft tacos. Suffice to say the food was fantastic....will defo go back for more. The winner of the judging (which was blindly done) was the mixologist from Bootleggers!! Went in here in a whim as we were hungry. Never again! Quite a dark dirty interior. Trying to be cool. It just doesn't work. The food was a joke. My friends burger came without lettuce, while my bun was cremated. They had the cheek to dump my clonakilty burger in another bun. By the time they gave me in back it was stone cold. The building has buckets of character with pallets being used as decoration on the walls and old school floors having been made into tables. One of the best margaritas, I've had anywhere in the world. It was the perfect amalgam of sweet and sour with an interesting aftertaste that resembles olive juice. Even though they call it their house margarita, I'm dubbing it the "Martinarita." Now let's talk about their wings. Being from D.C. and living in Philadelphia for the past 8 years, I've become a bit of a wing snob. It actually doesn't matter where I said I was from, everyone thinks they know where to get the best wings. Anyway, I digress...their honey chipotle wings.....I. DIED. Popped in here of a Tuesday evening before the cinema & was craving chicken wings & a burger (Yelp off what are u doing to me!??) Any ways the place is cool haven't been in since it was alley cat..the decor is laid back & spacious; however one of the staff members was pairing behind the wall behind the bar so there was a nasty paint smell (not the nice freshly painted smell but more a real ammonia type smell!). The menu looked great I could have ordered it all! The three of us decided on; hot wings, poutine fries & 3 of the Brooklyn burger (comes with shin beef, Tabbaco onions & horseradish Mayo). Food came & only one burger..the waitress didn't hear us saying THREE burgers lol.. Really think orders should be read over (well I do now!). So all burgers (didn't really taste the horseradish Mayo), wings & fries were demolished..very very tasty! I had dinner in bootleggers on Friday 13th November and I was very happy with the overall experience, I ordered what was the probably the messiest two things on the menu the chilli dog and the soft shell tacos both were delicious, I also ordered a whiskey sour which was very nice and cheaper than I've gotten elsewhere, I also ordered a strawberry milkshake which was also very enjoyable and very liked the friendly vibe of the restaurant as well, as the staff were very friendly I will definitely be returning in the future read more

The service here was at first okay but, when I witnessed how they treated two paying customers I decided I would not be frequenting here. I witnessed the "manager" and another female employee treat two paying customers horribly. I was sitting fairly close to the two girls when the supposed manager came over and scolded them for entering with Starbucks, the girls looked so uncomfortable when he took their coffees away. When they got up to leave the female bartender was so rude and instead of giving them their drinks she gave them some snarky remark along the lines of "oh the ones that were taken away?" seeming to try and make them feel unwanted and uncomfortable. Just got back from having a drink at this place and had the worst experience. We walked in and had Starbucks cups we had been carrying around for a while with only a little coffee left in them in our hands. We sat down at the bar and the manager came over and told us we couldn't have them, but instead of giving us the option to go outside to finish the coffee, he reached over and took them away from us and then walked away and never came back. We had already ordered drinks so we stayed and just got the most negative treatment, looks, and service from every employee. Before we left we asked if we could have our coffee back and one of the female bartenders said "oh you mean the ones my managers had to take off of you?" It was like she was mad at us and trying to prove a point. We will never come back and honesty the experience ruined our entire day. We feel so disrespected and don't know why everyone treated us so badly just because we had coffee, we didn't know this was such a serious rule and would've easily finished our coffees outside if we knew it would anger the employees so much.
