It's a cute cafe and bar in downtown Belfast. The gin selection is good but wouldnt say it was amazing and the cocktails didnt necessarily highlight the gins given the amount of sugar and other ingredients in them. I think they may have had gin flights but we didnt see anything about that. They get their food from next door (burgers and tacos) which is fine and perfectly acceptable. read more

It was our first time in Belfast and decided to do our own pub crawl (especially if you have too many beers). Luckily we were not driving so Muriel's was our second stop. Since we had already had lunch we sat at the bar for a beer. We were greeted by a nice bartender. We told her we were looking for either a beer or cider. There are a few tables outside to enjoy the weather and a few tables inside. The bar area downstairs is small with quite a sizable collection of bras hanging from the ceiling. We ordered a Hilden Belfast Blonde and a Small Axe Session IPA. It wasn't super busy so talked to the bartender about travel. As another bartender walked in we also discussed beer and cocktails. He told us that flavored Gins were popular. He let us smell a few of the popular ones since we are not big gin drinkers. Decided to stop in the ladies room before leaving and found an interesting group of old photos while there. Quite literally stumbled into Muriel's after downing some burgers at the neighboring Pablo's. I mean this in the most positive way possible, but this can be a bar I take my grandmother to. Went here looking for a quiet place to have a drink after a hectic little cocktail tasting night. Greeted upon revival by the very chatty bar staff, there were barely any people actually inside the bar, the few patrons drinking choosing to sit outside on a bizarrely hot Belfast evening. I've been here before, but only decided to go for a few of their nicer gins, this time it was to continue the cocktail drinking. 3 different cocktails, all served by staff up for a bit of banter. At the end of the night we just requested them to bring us each a cocktail of their choosing and their selections were excellent. It might be a little bit more expensive than other bars, and on busy nights its really REALLY busy, but I think its worth it and I'll be eagerly coming back. read more

Love love love Muriel's. Whether its a drink after work or a bite to eat they do it well both ways. The food is always delicious anytime I have eaten in here and the cocktails are great. For those of us who like gin they also offer gin flites (flytes?) ((Little boards with a 3-4 glasses of gin)) with a fab selection of mixers and garnishes. The décor is comfortable and plush and I just love the feel of the place. They also do some great wee offers on food and wine platters etc. Definitely one of Belfast's gems and I never get tired of visiting it. read more

It has a cosy vibe mainly due to the fact it is very small inside and because of this it can be quite cramped. Upstairs is a bit more spacious and I have heard the food is very good too so I just need to go back and sample this. LOVE this wee bar! I'd go as far as saying this is probably my favourite bar in the whole of Belfast! If you're a fan of perfectly crafted cocktails, or Gin, you HAVE to try this place. Of course they do loads of other great drinks choices too including some craft beers. Also have a nice menu including one of the best cheeseboard's I've seen. The main reason I love this place is the attention to detail. Everytime I've ordered a drink here, it has been served in the correct branded glass or in some kind of quirky way. For example, in a teacup..or a cocktail in a jam jar..or the ice cubes have raspberries frozen inside. All these little extras show their passion and make it for me:) When the weather's decent, it's lovely to enjoy a pint in the sun in the little outdoor section on the street. Even in the evening, they offer blankets if you get cool. Great for people watching The bar is very small with an equally small upstairs with a few cosy sofas. It's very quaint and dimly lit which gives it a cosy ambiance - great place for a date. They have a wide selection of gins served in all shapes and sizes. Think tea cups and cucumbers. As well as the gins they have a wide selection of other spirits and an extensive cocktail list. If you tried all their gins you'd swear there were knickers hanging from the ceiling... no wait there are Knickers hanging from the ceiling. As well as the knickers there's character in Muriel's, with plenty of candlelit corners for you to get cosy in. Just up from Victoria Square on Church lane it's the perfect place to go and reward yourself after a hard days shopping. There's outside seating if you're a smokers or if you want to watch the world go by. I absolutely love Muriels - home of the original jam jar cocktail (as far as I know)! We popped in for a drink before dinner on Friday night. I opted for the aforementioned jam jar cocktail which was as delicious as ever :-) The bar wasn't overly busy and there was no queue at the bar. We found some seats outside which was great for some people watching at the end of a working week. I noticed they have extended the outdoor seating area which is great as alfresco drinking seems to become ever more popular in Belfast. I definitely intend to visit Muriels again soon. Just a couple of points though - I felt the outdoor tables and chairs look a bit cheap (like they are from an old man bar) and just don't suit the feel of the place. Also, bring back coasters! My drink created a bit of a puddle on the table which then dripped down me when I took a drink. read more

(My first out of the US Yelp Review -- yay) Food/Cost: (4) Came here with my friend for lunch on a weekday. We were visiting Ireland and Muriel's was recommended in my Ireland Step by Step guidebook. My friend ordered the chicken sandwich and I ordered the mushroom sandwich (total was 20.90 pounds). Both came with a side of fries and salad. My mushroom sandwich was delicious. The portobello mushroom was huge, sliced at just the right thickness, and marinated/seasoned perfectly. The bread was spot on -- brunch on the outside and fluffy, soft on the inside. The mixed green salad was a surprising hit as the vinaigrette was a well-balanced blend of sweet and acidic. Ambiance: (5) The interior of this restaurant gave me quite a start as I began to look around. There are undies -- male and female -- hanging from the ceiling, pictures of topless women on walls and on the ceiling, and semi-scary paper mached mannequin heads starting at your from behind their glass wall shelves. Still, all this added to the unique character of the place. Location: (5) Located in the heart of Belfast's commercial city centre, Muriel's is convenient for tourists (me) and locals. Service: (5) The lady who served us was motherly and very friendly (as are almost all Irish people as I discovered throughout my trip). This place was really great. Not too classy but more cool and eclectic. The food was fantastic and of course the Guinness was great. They have a great gin selection and great gin cocktails. There is an upstairs area which is better for sitting down and eating. The main level is probably better treated as a pub. read more

I went to Muriel's only last night for a friends birthday. Now, I've always walked by this place and thought it looked a little bit pretentious, but I could have been more wrong. The atmosphere was welcoming and warm. All the furniture looked quite unique which made it feel a little ramshackle but it the most stylish way possible. Muriel's is quite a small place (we were late for the party and thus were condemned to stand for the rest of the night!), some would say by piling in all the little trinkets, lamps and photographs (on the ceiling!) would make it feel all the more cramped, but it just adds to its vaudeville character. This gives it a little something else that other bars lack. It's not a bar for the casual pint, but for an occasion, a celebration, its the type of place that you would take friends or family visiting Belfast to show them a little glimpse of the cities back alley diamonds. The bar staff were friendly and always up for a chat in between pouring pints. They are proud of what they are doing at Muriel's won't budge away from an opportunity to show off their silky cocktail making skills. read more

A great bar right in the centre of town. The decor inside is very luxe and bohemian and comfortable. You'll feel like you're sitting in a well to do aunt front room with the velvet couches and antique lampshades. Although I've only been here for drinks, I have eyed up other patrons delicious looking meals and I've heard really good reviews. Its quite a random pub as its decor is quite out there at times, but only the supremely observant among you would notice. It's a small enough establishment but it makes up for it with good service and an excellent stock of various gins. This is a gin emporium so it was perfect for me. We stopped here for a drink after dinner and had a couple of their prosecco cocktails. If you are in to your gin they do "gin flights" which are tasting boards of various gins paired with their ideal mixer. Tasty stuff. The place is adorned with Bras and pants, and they have cosy corners to have intimate chats.... If you manage to nab one! We didn't so moved on to get a seat elsewhere! read more

Beware, this is a biassed review, I love this little gin palace, and a dare you to argue with me. ;-) The shiny bar glistens with promise, and they do make big promises- like having the best selections of gin in town. And they do. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and their specials are always worth a try. At the moment they have a Gin & Toasty on the menu, which is basically hot, fruity gin, a bit like a hot toddy, and I can confirm it certainly put the colour back in my cheeks! The lunch menu is always good, and if you pop in at tea time you can quite often get two meals for the price of one. What I enjoy though is sharing one of their meat and cheese platters with a bottle of wine and gossip, especially early in thee week when it is quieter and you can get a seat (showing my age!). Oh, and on the topic of seats, if you can't get one downstairs, go up and recline in velvety luxury. I guarantee you'll stay longer than you intended.. ;-) read more

Up there as one of my top bars in Belfast. Muriels has two floors and is quite small but really cute. On arrival you are greeted with a clothes line above your head pegged with quirky underwear which is seasonal/themed. Next you spot the never ending selection of Gins behind the bar and every other type of alcohol you can imagine. Staff are really friendly and always happy to give you a recommendation based on your palate and tastes. The cocktails are varied and each one made to perfection with a lot of attention to presentation. They have a lovely seated area out the front which is great to relax and watch the world go by whilst sipping your cocktail. The food here is beautiful and when I last visited they were doing a lovely cheeseboard which I'd highly recommend. What a fun spot. We stopped for cocktails and cheese plate. Drinks were excellent! They fulfilled my request for blue cheese olives for my martini even though it wasn't on the menu. The best time to hit Muriel's is a Saturday or Sunday afternoon when its at it's quietest. With the same owners as The Spaniard, you can tell a lot of thought has been put in to everything about this bar. The furniture is worn, but not shabby, the decorations (including bras and pants which hang like bunting) are quirky and the beer and food on offer is fantastic. The staff are lovely, even asking you what sort of music you want to hear. My top recommendation would have to be the meat-platter. A mere £10 note will get you a wooden board with some of the tastiest cured meats and hams in Belfast. Not to mention a sumptuous tapenade and tasty tasty olives. I love sitting upstairs on a wet day. It feels like your gran's front room, if your gran was a crazy exhibitionist who liked hanging her sexy underwear all over the place. Don't let that put you off though. And they serve Erdinger and Grey Goose Vodka, an added bonus! read more

Muriel's is a nice, warm, living-room-esque pub which I am as at home in as I am in Queen's library. The pub has just the right mix of relaxed chatty atmosphere, and a bit of drunken craic. Although we only came in for a pint, as it usually happens we stayed for more than the one. Though there wasn't any offers on that would make me want to rush back, it was a nice place to be. However, our experience was tainted by the man at the bar asking us for our ID's, then staring at them like we had just handed him those pens that when you turn upside down the little cartoon lady loses all of her clothes. We were 21 and 22 respectively, yet he stared at us like we were ten and doing it for a dare. Then he uttered a "hmm it'll do" which if I was marginally more argumentative I could have pursued further. I think the staff could make the place a big of a happier place to have a drink. But on the whole, the pub is excellent. The staff just need a dose of happy pills. read more

My only experience of Muriel's was on a 'Xmas do' for myself and a few friends who had a lot of catching up to do. We'd been to Little Wing for dinner, the wine had been flowing and of course we decided a nightcap or two was imperative. The bar was a welcome and cosy sanctuary after the brisk walk through the cold and the décor was immediately striking. It certainly didn't feel like a Belfast bar and the low lighting and candles just added to the Christmassy feeling. Even though it was busy we managed to get a seat upstairs at one of the front windows and the drinks began to flow. It was quite cramped but that seemed to lead to most of the tables chatting to each other and there was a nice communal atmosphere to the night. Beers were good and when the brandy appeared it was definitely time to get out of there. The only downside was that one of our party lost their iphone 'somewhere' in the bar and after a ring round the next day he said the bar staff weren't too helpful about going to have a look for it. Muriel's is a really popular bar in Belfast, which is a little surprising, given that it's a relative newcomer to the bar scene. It's quite small, but full of charm and character, and people hang from the rafters at the weekends. The décor is bohemian without looking forced or affected in any way (not an easy task if you ask me). In fact, the only thing that puts me off going to Muriel's is the fact that it gets so busy. Muriel's is a nice wee spot, and for some reason it always seems to be a Sunday when I end up here, which suits the place perfectly - it's just the sort of pub you'd imagine lounging about in killing the Sunday hangover and drinking off the impending Monday blues. They do an excellent Bloody Mary, even if the staff do shake it in alternative cocktail mixers for about three minutes, while I'm hopping from foot to foot and gazing at them imploringly. The interior of Muriel's looks like a spell gone wrong in Amelia Figg's living room, all big sofas and scatter cushions and packets of vintage stockings behind glass. It's a little too carefully done for my taste - personally I prefer places that are genuinely a bit scatty, rather than clearly choreographed as such, but this is a minor quibble. I've spent a few nights here, but, while I really do like it a lot, to me it's more a place to come for a few drinks before heading on somewhere else, or for a lunchtime hangover cure, or as I say a Sunday evening 'Don't make me go into work tomorrow' gibbering. Its tiny cosiness means it can get very busy and be a bit cramped, not too much of a problem for a while, but a bit annoying when snobby types in the corner get louder and louder while saying snobby things. Actually, I think that's why I usually only have a few drinks in Muriel's. My friends must march me off. read more

One of the best bars in Belfast today, a great place to get brunch and fantastic staff. Check out the food platters - a selection of deli meats, cheese and olives - as you sit with your favourite tipple under the rows of hanging knickers (you'll see what I mean). A former milliners shop Muriels is dripping with chandeliers, velvet seats,dark walls, silver-framed mirrors,and not surprisingly an array of hats. It was packed last night on St. Patrick's Eve and despite the crowds the staff continued to provide a cheerful service, balancing drinks and food skilfully through the crowd. I've been going to Muriels with all my chums on Friday nights for ages now. It's a lovely wee place with a great atmosphere and has some of the nicest cocktails I've ever had. Try the Daisy Cosmo - trust me it's good :) A few weeks ago the BF brought me there for lunch on a saturday and I was shocked. For some reason i had never thought about it for food but the lunch was AMAZING. Muriel's Cafe Bar is a real 'underground' kind of place, somewhere you wouldn't think of going on a night out yet that always turns out to be great craic. I'm not a fan of the food, simply because the menu isn't my kind of stuff, but the staff are lovely and there's nothing better than sitting there having a quiet drink with mates. I agree with the other reviewers, it does have a warmth that few other bars have but also a secrecy, a sort of seclusion, as if it's hidden away from the rest of the world.
