Boxty
Marie B.

This restaurant gets busy, so be prepared to wait a bit. Lots of tables had "reserved" signs, so getting a free table was a task. I ordered the boxty with chicken and onion rings. I enjoyed it, especially being a boxty virgin! Mr B got the fish and chips, which he graded a "B-". Needed to be crisper.

This was our first time in Belfast so decided to take a look around downtown. We took a bus to downtown and got off in the main square across from City Hall. As we walked around downtown we decided to head along the river to see if there were any good seafood places. As we walked we ran into McHughs. It said it was the oldest building in Belfast. We were there a little early before they opened so waited at a table outside. Once they opened we wanted to take a look around. One part of the restaurant looks like the quintessential pub with all the dark wood and short ceiling. We sat on the opposite side by the stairs to the second floor where the restrooms are. As we were waiting for lunch, some music started in the other room. We ordered a couple of local beers along with lunch. Hubby ordered the Classic Ploughmans Platter and I had the Irish stew. Our waiter was very nice and told us a little about the history of the building. The food came up from the basement in a dumb waiter to the bar area for the wait staff to pick up. The Irish Stew was amazing!! Some of the best I have ever had. The platter was also good especially if you want a lighter lunch. On a nice day it would be nice to sit outside. If ever in Belfast again we will definitely stop by for a pint and lunch.

We had the most enjoyable evening. I ordered the special of steak and Guinness pie. It was delicious! I should have taken a picture, but I ate it too quickly. I recommend this pub. We made friends with a couple from Belfast and they even bought us shots of Baileys for a toast.

I reviewed McHugh's way back in 2010 and I didn't really rate it but since then I've matured, I've become a more cultured individual and I've started to appreciate history and tradition a whole lot more. Looking back I can't believe I didn't appreciate that McHughs was one of Belfast's oldest licensed premises' dating back to 1711. It's location is pretty good too - just off Custom House Squarer and within walking distance to Titanic Belfast, McHugh's makes the perfect stop off for tourists and locals who are heading back in to the City from the Titanic Quarter. I had no idea until yesterday that McHugh's plays live sport at the weekends. They also host a traditional Irish music collective on Sundays. These guys aren't really performing for the patrons, they are really just jamming but it makes a lovely background music while you sip on your pint. McHugh's is decked out in traditional trinkets and there is also a nod to Northern Ireland political past with framed newspapers on the walls. All in all I think 'm going to pop a few extra stars on McHugh's - it just shows you that a businesses doesn't have to change, sometimes you've just got to appreciate what's on offer.

Lovely pub that attracts a large crowd at all times, particularly as its the first bar you come to after leaving the SSE Arena. Lovely friendly staff and usually have all the big football and rugby games on. It has a great outdoor area in the summer over looking custom house square so sometimes of concerts are taking place there you can listen for the fraction of the cost with a shorter queue at the bar. Upstairs there is a great restaurant that serves amazing food and in the main bar downstairs they sell the usual pub fare which is of a high standard. Usually on a Friday evening they have a traditional band playing in the bar which just adds to its atmosphere and gets the crowd going. A great pub to visit

Is McHugh's good for a bite to eat? Yes. Is it the venue for upmarket food? Not so much and as long as you go armed with that information and matching expectations, you won't be disappointed. I have had all manner of evenings in McHughs - a gaggle of over- excited girls having a meal and drinks before a *blush* Take That show, a family Sunday evening tea, and a meal before the cinema with the husband. Each time I have had a perfectly nice meal in pleasant surroundings. You come in off the street into the main bar area so if you're just in for drinks, this is as far as you go. For food, head on up to the first floor. The first floor is big, but its layout in balconies and alcoves means that most tables have a cosy feel and everyone from romantic twosomes to large groups can be accommodated. I have always had something from the stir fry section of the menu and can recommend both the duck and beef stir fries which both deliver a tasty meal with no feeling of being overloaded. The husband has had the salmon fillet a couple of times and the pieces I have nabbed from his plate have been good. Service is efficient and polite so no complaints there. One of my pet hates in life is rude waiting staff but no complaints here. Downstairs gets pretty raucous later on on weekend nights. I fear I may have contributed to that on a few occasions. I believe there is a diso/nite klub in the basement, but get this - the last time I was in McHughs with a big group of girls, the bouncer said we were too badly behaved to be allowed into it!! I beg your pardon? OK, maybe he did have a point. One of the group had no shoes on when she got home.....

This place is lost on me. It is "the oldest bar in Belfast" but in hindsight, there's only a small number of times you can go to "old" bars before they all become the exact same thing. McHugh's is too similar to the "ye olde traditional pubs" that are littered around Belfast and in that respect it is fine for a drink or two. I've only been there during the day and I have friends who go to McHughs in the evening/night time and they like the club part of it downstairs. But really it's just very mediocre. Shame

Caution! Tourist review: Stopped by after the Titanic museum, which was lame. This Place tho, had some amazing seafood chowder and fish and chips. Best meal so far in Ireland. I especially liked the mussels in the chowder.

Do you like glue for mashed potatoes? How about flat Prosecco? Maybe the servers are too young to know, or maybe it's just a Tourist Trap.

The ground floor bar area was packed and busy! It was a good vibes. We sat and had dinner in a quiet setting upstairs. We enjoyed our food and drinks. My margarita was delicious. During the time I visited, it wasn't very packed so I was seated swiftly. The kind staff accommodated my request to get a corner table. The vibe can be describe is a classic. I really enjoyed all the dark stained wood furniture - gave it such an "old Irish saloon" vibe...maybe because it is haha. I did not have much time to spend in Belfast, so I tried to taste as many traditional dishes as possible with being just one person. With that being said, I ordered a few of their notable dishes - Crown Bar Irish Stew, Steak & Ale Pie, and to finish it off, the Sticky Toffee Pudding served with both the custard and ice cream (really thankful the server offered to give me two toppings, and they were both delicious). All the dishes were great, and are definitely hearty. The stew as well as the pie filling had a rich roux - nice, thick and flavorful. I will say, the pie pastry was not as flaky as I would have liked it; kind of too thick. Overall, it was a great taste of Ireland

Closing time listed as 9:00pm, actually 7:00pm on a Sunday. Maybe you should update your hours?…read moreGirl walked in right behind me with the same problem, she was also turned away. The guy with blue eyes behind the bar asked how long I was in town for, hoping that I would come back after being turned away... NO THANK YOU . Excellent service for my first hour in Ireland . Update 04-28-2026: wow, I can't believe how both the business and employee (Pearse Duffy) both responded. Completely unprofessional, Dishonest, and Disrespectful treatment of a traveler who just wanted a warm meal. Whatever you're talking about having "all orders 2 hrs before posted time" isn't working because the tall Asian woman in the white sweater walked in and out, just after I did. So I'm not the only one who is being mislead and dismissed for your ignorance and arrogance. You clearly need to make your hours more obvious, change how you display them, or do something else, because I am not the only person having this problem. What you're current doing regarding your hours, or handling of negative reviews is not working! I posted this review to help both this business and any future potential customers from making the same mistake that I did. The correct response would be : I'm so sorry that happened to you, will change it right away. But to call me obnoxious for pointing out a valid criticism? Bizarre behavior from an established restaurant. As for Pearse Duffy, the disgruntled employee who turned me away after laughing at me, noted that it is his 2nd week working in the harassing Facebook message that he sent me, and it shows... The correct response would have been; I'll tell my manager right now to update the hours on Google so that this doesn't happen again. I'm so sorry, what can I do to make this right? Not laughing at me, stalking me, and sending me a harassing message on my Facebook profile. If he contacts me again, I will be submitting all of this information to the local authorities, and filing a police report. This is not how you handle an upset customer, as either a business or an employee. This is exactly how you ruin your reputation and get fired. Stalking an upset customer and then sending them a harassing message over an honest review is grounds for immediate dismissal in any industry. This is a terrible look for your employee, your management, and your business. This is no way to handle a business or a customer, I hope someone who knows how to sees this updated review.

I'm not quite the party animal I used to be…read moreback in the olden days, but I do like a night out from time to time, and Katy's is right up our street in terms of the crowd that go there, the music they play, and the general ambiance. They are in a handy city centre position and can be easily reached from anywhere in the city centre. If you're not drinking, there is parking right out the front (if you get there early enough!) if not there are plenty of side streets too! For weekend visiting, be sure to get there before 7-ish, or you may find that you won't get a seat, although it does calm down later on in the night when the Limelight opens and some of the patrons move next door to the club. I must make a point of going back to Katy's soon, it's been too long!

Anyway, apart from the wonderful Public Bar in Melbourne, and possibly Dubliners in Tokyo (actually no, their Guinness is questionable and their 'soda bread' is in fact wheaten), Katy Daly's is my all time favourite bar in the world. This says quite a lot if, like me, you fled screaming from these shores at the first possible opportunity and spent several years abroad. But I've come to realise on my frequent returns, to sign on, that Belfast is actually quite a cool wee city. And Katy Daly's is one of the main experiences for me that encompasses that vibe. Imagine my shame and horror last year in Australia when one of the lead items on the news was the spides in the Village burning the Roma population out of the area. And when any July overseas the pictures beamed in from Belfast are of riots, bottle-throwing spides and triumphalist sweaty-faced Orangemen doing their damnedest to make sure no-one can get down the Lisburn Road. 'Belfast isn't like that!' I'd wail to anyone who'd listen, and plenty who wouldn't. 'Look at Katy's for example!' A rock bar with great music both live and on the jukebox, an unpretentious and friendly crowd, the best pub quiz I've ever been to (yes, even better than Melbourne's), friendly staff who remember your usual (ahem), and good food at good prices, makes Katy's a must visit for any tourist who thinks Belfast is all burning buses and bodhráns. Oh, and most unusually, and welcome, for an average city bar - the ladies are normally outnumbered by the men. Most of whom are of an alternative ilk and not decked out in Ben Sherman and Timberlands, and therefore are generally gentlemanly instead of trying to cop a quick grope as you go past them on the way to the loos (Bot, I'm looking at you). Many of them are long-haired and tattooed to boot. Yummies. In fact, I'm sitting in Katy's right now writing this. Goddesses bless mobile broadband.
