The food was great but we were confused where to go. The Sunday menu did not have all the food options we hoped for. But in the end the stew was great, the ciders were refreshing, and another round of fish of chips never hurt anyone. After a long day of walking, and a last-minute discovery of this pub last night, I decided it was the perfect opportunity to drop in... mid-afternoon on a Monday. No crowd, quick service. There was plenty of seating, and it was very cozy. I ordered at the bar, though I think they might do table service. I just walked in and assumed I knew what I was doing and sat down and got my Guinness and chowder from the bar... but that might not be standard procedure. Don't blame me. The chowder seems small, but they pack a lot of really good bits of quality fish in there! Don't let the idea of "soup" fool you. This is a proper meal, and delicious at that... I did crunch down on a couple bits of mussel shell, but that's par for the course, eh? Can recommend for wayward travellers, but if you're doing it for the checklist, then drop in when it's off-peak hours. The old stable is low lite, low ceilings, and friendly bar tenders. It was not overly busy when we stopped by, and the noise level was low. No music during our visit unfortunately. Not much I can say that hasn't already been said. This place is classic, old world and charming. The staff was fine, commensurate with what I have come to expect in the UK and EU, where lack of a tipping culture often results in what I find to be "lackluster" attentiveness. Servers are paid the same regardless of my dining experience. While the merits of the US tipping culture is the subject of much debate. What is undebatable is that a servers attention to my dining experience is certainly amplified when their compensation depends on it. Nonetheless the experience was a blast and the food was awesome. The stand out item was the seafood chowder. I will be back later this year for another bowl for certain. read more

Whites is a vibe. We loved the atmosphere. It was the quant old Irish Pub we had been so excited for when we booked our tickets to Ireland. There was a good mix of tourists and locals, and everyone seemed to be having a great time. They were pretty busy, and the waitress came by a couple times telling us the food was a little delayed and sorry for the inconvenience. Whites is a very British pub in Belfast; while I am American and will admit that I don't understand the political dichotomy of Northern Ireland, I can say I met with a substantially British patronage on a Saturday morning/afternoon. Whites is comprised of three distinct bar areas - the pub, garden, and beer hall. The beer hall may be the most sophisticated (and has the most sitting area), but each has its place. The original pub has charm, a slightly more 'Irish' patronage, and limited seating. The garden had stags and hens galore (bachelor and bachelorette parties), and the bar had a few designers present, along with cocktails and wine more prevalent than pints. I ordered three drinks here, and the staff was always friendly if distant (they were busy - this isn't a complaint). The British men next to me (London) joked that I received my drinks quicker than them.... Sure? My gin fizz was made incorrectly but it was still drinkable. The Last Desire (not sure if that was the correct name but it was close) was tasty and frothy, and all that an egg white cocktail should be. The Guinness (sampled from my London friends) was frothy and cold. I'm not sure why Americans are amusing to Brits, but I did have a few friendly Brit's ask if we were Americans... which makes me think I either smile and talk too much, or that I'm doing something wrong. Either way, enjoyed the atmosphere, the gaiety and the drinks! Multiple Brit's mentioned the drinks were pricey, but I found the drinks to be slightly under what I'm used to in urban cities (even factoring in the the pound to dollar conversion). I got the prawn linguine, it was good, a little spicy and some tasty sun dried tomatoes in it. The seafood chowder was hearty and had a good variety of seafood in it. Having visited The Titanic Exhibition and driven into Belfast Central a pint, or two, was needed before the flight home. Checking googlemaps this 17th century tavern showed up and it was worth a visit. Situated down an alley which hadn't changed much throughout the centuries. A cosy bar with roaring log fire and candlelit. Serving a wonderful pint with, the necessary, wait as it settled. Brought to our table by fantastic, friendly, bar staff. I bought a pint of Lager then ordered Irish Stew... hmmmm When it arrived the bowl had so little in it for an adults portion disappointment was obvious.. the wheaten bread was the size of a 4inch long and 2 and half inch wide ... I'm pretty sure White's is a Belfast staple. If you're going out for a night on the lash, this should be on your list to go to. White's has a great selection of beers and liquors, as well as a fairly robust food menu (though the food isn't available all the time). During my 4 days in Belfast, White's was somewhere that I ended up almost every night. The inside is peak Irish ambiance: low ceilings, dark lighting, dark wood, and friendly people. You can get a seat inside or you can park yourself outside around one of the barrels. It's a great way to make new friends and it was how I discovered new bars. read more

A quaint, dark, old-style tavern to visit during winter months and enjoy the warming open fire. My only complaint being that it's so popular with locals and tourists it's often impossible to get a seat in Whites. I've visited many times for drinks but have never eaten here. I've also often popped in for a drink and not stayed as it's been so overcrowded on occasion. On my most recent visit, Saturday 20 August 2016, we sat outside in Whites courtyard as there were no tables free inside. Nonetheless, it was good to sit outside on a clammy afternoon whilst listening to the rain pelt down on the awning, chat to friendly tourists and enjoy a G&T.
