Service was not friendly or personable. At one point they told us they stopped serving mixed drinks (at 8pm with no explanation and mixed drinks being made for a private party in an adjoining room). The food was mid and the atmosphere was less than desirable. I hate to give poor reviews and yet it's necessary for this one. We actually left disappointed overall. The fish and chips were just ok as was the sausage and mash. The frickles were unimpressive and most of our group didn't care for the hummus (plus the bread was just 2 thin tortillas that had been toasted and cut). The chili chicken was decent but nothing to rave about and the calamari type dish was just bland. Maybe we caught them on an off night but if that's the case I would think the servers could step up and at least be friendly. To preface, this place was a disaster. First, we waited around for 5 minutes to see if we could get a table when not even a quarter of the place was filled. They seemed to ignore us until finally they couldn't anymore. The appetizers we ordered were terrible. The frickles were not tasty at all and the hummus flatbread was thin as paper with again, no flavor. Next came the drinks. A cocktail takes 10 minutes for them to make and then they stop serving them at a certain time. Our entrees were similar. The waitress did not check on us during the meal period, we wanted more drinks, some hot sauce for the fish and chips but she was not present on the floor. Please note they may be showing the games in the "Back Bar" which is way in the back with a separate door entrance. Menu is pretty good including nachos (pretty good with guacamole included and optional chili or pulled pork), several burgers including a Scooby Snack (burger with bacon, cheese, onion rings and bbq sauce). The Lattice fries (aka waffle fries) are a good choice but we're a little greasy. After looking at yelp (repeatedly) to find a pub that has gluten free options, I decided to have a late lunch here. The best part, they've got an entire menu dedicated to gluten/dairy free. After trying to narrow down what I wanted, I ordered a cranberry juice to drink, and the honey chili chicken and sweet potato wedges. Service was prompt, and food came out quickly. The honey chili chicken was A-mazing. The sweet potato wedges, not so much. Kind of wish I would have gotten something else. The salsa was more like stewed tomatoes. I've been a fan of Lavery's for years. It's relaxed but at the same time often busy with crowds of people so the atmosphere is spirited and sparkling with energy. An exceptionally lively and vibrant pub with a real mix of people from all walks of life. There are numerous sections and bars to this pub, hence no matter what mood I'm in, I know I'll find a perfect spot to perch and drink a G&T, cocktail or glass of wine. I especially adore the beer gardens (complete with cool street art on the walls), roof terraces and Woodworkers bar. Food is extremely tasty, consisting of good honest pub grub with loads of vegetarian options. Staff are down to earth, helpful and friendly. I do love this place, it has a great atmosphere no matter what you go here for. A place for football, a place for food, a place for a good night out, a place for beer, whiskey, or even a wine connoisseur. They have it all. I have been going to this pace for years, mostly for the drinking, but there very rarely a time where I don't have a good time. First, If going for the food I would recommend this place. For pub food it really raises the bar. A menu filled a various types. From burgers, to lasagne, to steaks, and everyone's favourites goujons. (Well maybe my favourite, but this is my review, so I'll just assume ;)) Filled with deserts like cheesecakes, brownies, and something called Eton mess, which j an probably a little afraid to try. The drinks come in a wide variety, from your usually carlsberg, harps, smithwicks and guiness. But you'll also get your erdingers, einstock (very recommended, only if it's payday though). Of you don't see anything you like I'm sure you can go next door to woodworkers, also owned by Lavery's, and they will really treat you. For a night out, this place offers 3 floors, bottom floor being a normal bar, with some good music out in the speakers. You can neet some great people down here if you want a good chat. There are two bars down stairs, so if you can't get one at the massive one, head through to the back and you'll easily get served there. The second floor I like to call the rock floor, where you have a DJ Playing out all sorts of great songs from all decades. If you cannot hear what you want to then just request the DJ to play and they'll be more than happy to oblige. I'm sure people have been tortured by my Offspring requests. :p Top floor is for the people wanting a good dance time. Plenty of dance, techno, anthems etc etc Not really my style, but from what I hear from some of my friends this is a great place to let it all out. Outside is great as well around the smoking area, offering easy access to woodworkers and is massive enough to find a space, have a smoke, or just sit chat and have a drink. Great place for football, though I'd recommend coming early for those that want a seat. They have an offer on where they give you tokens during football Games where if you buy 7 pints you'll get one free. It's something ;) This place offers it all. Even poop on the top floor of you go there during the week, or the day time. But just remember that Saturday night is party time. If you want pool, I would recommend he pavilion on the ormeau road which is also owned by Lavery's. This is not going to be an impartial review- I love Laverys! If you want a quiet pint or a feed of them, if you are wearing a ball gown or bowling shoes, if you are a fresh faced student or a middle aged middle manager, all are welcome in Laverys. I think it is the mixture of clientèle which makes the place so relaxed. There are a variety of bars for whatever you need spread over 4 floors, and a new extension to the pool hall and roof terrace should be completed shortly. I love the pool hall for a couple of games on a Saturday afternoon or the back bar at any time. The place is like a maze, and a pretty nice place to lose a night in. read more

We came on good Friday, so it was fairly quiet and the nightclub part wasn't open. I was well impressed with the menu. So much to choose from, and at least 10 VEGAN options. Yes, people, not even just vegetarian, but proper VEGAN, Never seen that before in a pub. Being in a carnivorous mood myself I went for the ribs and pulled pork combo. Visited here after reading reviews on yelp. On entering it had a traditional old mans feel about the place accompanied by old men at the bar putting the world to rights! I had to ask for the gluten free menu which was actually quite well filled. I opted for the chicken and bacon pasta with side order of chips. It was ok ... reasonable portion for £8.95. I was really surprised to see almost all of the desserts were gluten free ... i was tempted but resisted as was full after dinner. A reasonable meal and would probably return again! read more

Lavery's is a great bar. Whenever I ask anyone where is a good place to go out dancing in Belfast on a Saturday night (to fairly decent music) they always recommend Laverys. At the weekend, upstairs is usually jammers with students and people in their early twenties dancing away to a great mix of music. The bar downstairs looks like it has the potential for starting a great night out. It is vast and usually has loads of students hanging about. There are pool tables downstairs too if you fancy a game. Some pub grub food is served daily until 9pm and you can catch all the major sporting events on the ultra modern wide screen HDTVs. Been going to lavers in one form or another for nearly 18 years now and it has just gone from strength to strength. We sat downstairs and had a few drinks and some food. Even tho it looks like a huge 'old mans' bar when you walk in the service you get from the staff show that they are both well trained and care about what they do. I went to Laverys this evening for dinner and I didn't really enjoy it. It's a nice enough pub and fine for a quick drink,but for dinner it's really not up to much. There is a decent choice on the menu but nothing really grabbed my fancy so I went for the nachos. They came in a bowl with two small pots of salsa and guacamole. No sour cream - big mistake!! There were jalapeños though,and plenty of them. The nachos were okay. The problem was they were put in a bowl and once I'd eaten the top layer it was just a bowl of cold nachos with grated cheese. Not that appealing. They were okay. Overall,the experience wasn't one I would remember. For drinks it is nice but I wouldn't personally return for dinner. read more

If you're looking for a good Saturday night out in Belfast and you don't want the pomp and ceremony of the Cathedral Quarter I would look no further than Lavery's. Lavery's still has a real student vibe at the weekend which in Belfast seems rare these days, you will often get large groups in fancy dress who are just out for a laugh. If I was on a stag party in Belfast I would head to Lavery's as you are much more likely to be allowed entry. Lavery's has a pool room on one floor and I often go there to meet friends on a Friday after work. It's casual and relaxed and as mentioned you get all sorts of different folk mixing together. Drinks prices are as you'd expect £3.50 odd for a pint but they often have promotions and offers on at the weekend so keep an eye out for those. Queues can get long on a Saturday evening so if you are on a stag party or are scantily clad I would recommend getting down early. read more

Ok, I was guesting at the University and trying my best to look all academic and professional, I made a flippant comment to a co lecturer about "wheres good to grab a beer later" No sooner had we finished work for the day he marched me to this place...WOW! I'm glad he did! I think this is possibly one of the best looking interiors of a pub I have seen. On the ground floor that have perfectly managed to mix modern styling with traditional charm. The bar is simply amazing, a vast variety of drinks to choose from. I was encouraged by my 'mentor & Chaperone' Give the Guiness a try. I'm not a great fan of guiness however I will drink most anything alcoholic, have to say as far as Guiness goes it was ok. However I discover that Bushmills and Coke is really quite nice! This place has 3 floors, the 2nd floor has pool tables as far as the eye can see, they were all in use so no game for us but was great to see a'field' of tables, I've never seen so many tables in a bar outside of the US. The top floor is a nightclub I believe, we didn't make it up there but I'm told it is equally good. The staff were friendly, they had as much difficulty understanding my accent as I did theirs! which to some staff cold have been infuriating but they were patient and funny and by the end of the night we had kind of managed to create our own language! If they ever invite me back to the Univerity then I will definately be going back there! Also having been in a varity of 'Irish' themed pubs in the US it should be a legal requirement that any prospective landlord of such venue visit this place for inspiration and guidance first! read more

Along with Katy Daly's, Lavery's is my favourite Belfast pub and one of my favourites of the many I've visited worldwide. It's just across the road from Spud's too, so perfect for stumbling over for food after kicking out time. There are a few different bars here, all with their own vibe. The front bar is trendy, plays chart type music and is frequented mainly by old men and overdressed millies. Since the smoking ban the millies have been encroaching more and more into the once-revered alternative style smoking garden, where they seem not to realise they're not in Benedicts. Over my small dead body. The back bar is my spot, most particularly the side of the bar in the corner, from where I can amuse myself by watching all the drunken flirtations going on as well as call regularly for another shot of sambucca. Upstairs in the middle bar is where alternative comedy, music, gig and film nights are held, and is a great cosy dark wee spot, much like the middle bar of its sister pub the Pavilion. Finally, upstairs is the massive pool hall with another smoking garden. It's been revamped recently and is a bit too flash now for my liking, but I've long said if I'm ever foolish enough to get married this is where I'll hold my wedding reception. And I mean it too. Food by Spud's. The food in Lav's is brilliant, huge portions of tasty pub food served quickly and until 9pm. The staff are very friendly, although maybe that's just because I've contributed so much to their wages over the years. It's a diverse bar with something for everyone, with a nice chilled out vibe (in the back bar at least), and is perfect for lunch, pool and a few pints during the day. I feel the pool room warrants its own review separate from that of the pub downstairs because when you walk into the pool room, you don't feel like you are in the middle of Belfast playing a quick game of pool before dinner. You feel like it could be 10 in the morning or 10 at night. The Pool Room is located on the top floor of Lavery's Bar and is a stunning place to have a game of pool. With nearly 20 tables, a well-stocked jukebox and very efficient and friendly bar and kitchen staff, Lavery's Pool Room is the alternative to a night on the beer. The food is delicious and a main meal averages around £7-£10, whilst there are a small number of promotions on, but nothing that would draw an uneasy crowd. Pool costs 80p for a game or 3 for £2, with the option of regular pool or speed pool on all tables. There also boasts a range of pub snacks and a large smoking area resembling that of a miniature beer hall in Germany. In the sunshine, there are few better ways to spend an evening than playing some pool and sitting with a beer in the sun. Even if you have a few hours to kill or even a whole day, I definitely recommend you come here because it is a truly magnificent place to be. read more

This is yet another new club night trying to pave its way in an ever competitive market. Yet, Trenchfoot strikes a different chord with Belfast punters as it risks financial peril in order to satisfy the needs of the indie, alternative crowd in the capital city. Trenchfoot aims to get up and coming bands from outside Northern Ireland to play in Belfast at intimate gigs. The club night which was launched on 25th August is held on the last Wednesday of every month. Its launch night saw a decent crowd, despite its Wednesday time slot and the fact that summer was drawing to a close and with that pennies were being pinched. Tonight sees the second session of Trenchfoot going ahead with live performances from Girls Names, Sea Pinks and resident DJ's, Not yet out of the Woods. As well as a cracking line up, the first thirty people in the door receive a special Trenchfoot mixed tape compiled by resident DJ Ronan Linskey- not bad for a crisp fiver. This place was not the size I expected and despite the sleezy drunk men trying to pick my friend and I up early in the night at the downstairs bar (ohh and well sticky floors - but hey ive never been one for class and don't actually mind - some people would beg to differ) it was a great place to chill out. I had the fish and chips for dinner which was generous, the only thing that annoyed me slightly was the fact that the menu didn't state everything that the meal came with e.g the meal of fish and chips came with salad but i had ordered a side salad as an extra not knowing this - ok so yes it pays to ask too ;) All in all my meal was rather tasty and the food service was good despite being a large venue. My friend had the mexican fajita and was also rather impressed. GO LAVERY's :) The menu was extensive and had a variety and the food was tasty.. Our bar tender was amazing. I couldn't not have wanted more from our first stop in Northern Ireland from the US. Otherwise place is HORRIBLE. Not only does security make you feel not wanted in the country but so do the patrons. What you hear about Belfast being rude to people based on history is true and this bar from the customers to the unfriendly and unwelcoming security staff they hire, you'll never want to come back to the bar or Northern Ireland - also there was only in the whole bar 10 people and only Belfast people were allowed in as if the bar didn't needed our American patronage or money unless you played for their team ... foreigners be warned much better to go to Harp Bar or The Duke of York. Plenty of variety and a sense that you won't quite know what you are going to get once you walk through the doors only adds to its alure. 4 Bars over 3 stories with club nights, live music, pool and excellent service this place really is a one-stop shop for a night out, a date or an all day drinking session with your friends. I remember growing up and there being tales of Lavery's being quite rough and a place to go if you wanted guaranteed trouble, but that is no longer the case. It has well and truly cleaned up its act and is now seen by many as the indy/rock hang out. Highlights of the week are the hip-hop and soul DJs on a Thrusday night and the Reggae night on Mondays. The atmosphere is really buzzing in here and you really do see people from every walk of life from students to rockers to pretty boys. I, along with just about every other citizen of Belfast, absolutely adore Lavery's. I am old enough to remember the days of this place being a bit of a run-down hellhole - they were one of the first places to start serving food of a morning, so my friends and I would head here for a big plate of breakfast stodge after drinking rubbish cider for eight hours following a shift behind the bar we worked in. It was about as good as my lifestyle of the time. But that was ages ago, and since then a lot of money has been ploughed into Lavery's, completely transforming it. They knew exactly what they were doing and did it properly. Now, the staff are fantastic, the food is brilliant value and there are many options for places to park yourself under the one roof. I would tend to find myself in the upstairs smoking room (very bright, comfortable, heated and protected from the elements), or having a few games of pool. A good wee bar that offers something for everyone. It's not a fancy wine bar but does offer great music, a wide selection of drinks, pool tables, fab rooftop beer garden and good homely food. They also show all the football and rugby games and you are allowed in wearing football shirts, very few bars in Belfast do these days. This place is large, spread out over multiple levels this is more than just a pub to go to watch the big sports games but also a place you could grab a quiet pint for an afternoon on a weekend With music playing on the upper levels and plenty of room to groove for everyone the only thing I ask myself about this place is where do the store all the pool tables?? Had a quiet few games on a Sunday afternoon and was seriously impressed by the sheer number of tables and the quality of the felt too. Certainly a step, or dozen, above the usual pub pool table. Lavery's is a hugely successful bar in Belfast and its success is that it provides a number of different experiences under one roof. On the ground floor there are the usual selection of drinks and screens which display sporting events, as well as a large beer garden area outside which allows people to drink socially in the sunshine on the rare occasions it arrives! On the next floor up there is another bar area that club nights and live music is held. There are usually a number of local bands every week and is a hot bed of local talent, though in some cases the term talent is used loosely! The top floor is another bar area stocked out with screens but also about 25 pool tables! This is really great and is a great night out area in itself, or a great place to have a few drinks and have a chat with a a game of pool before you head on out! Lavery's has very friendly staff and is a well run place. It also gives you a free bottle of champagne in the week of your birthday ( as long as it is not a Saturday that you are asking for it!) which is awesome! read more

If you like being able to talk to your friends but also dancing to the likes of Disclosure on a night out, Laverys on a Saturday is the place to go. Be prepared to wait for a while to get a drink though, it's a popular place so if you're with friends order together! I would go quite often and the main dance music area doesn't open until around 11pm so if you want to skip the waiting around downstairs, you are usually safe enough to arrive at 11-11:30pm.
