Bonsai is a fun place. There's a place for sitting hibachi meals or traditional tables. We sat at the traditional table. The Fiji Apple sake was delicious. It's dangerous because it's so sweet and you don't taste the alcohol lol We enjoyed our crab puffs, sushi and hibachi steak meal. I love the seasoned steak with fried rice, veggies and house salad. I enjoyed talking to our waitress but she was very busy since it was only her and another waitress present and she had to take the to go orders as well as the hibachi meals. I always order the kobe steak entree cooked to a medium temp and I get perfectly tender, melt-in-your-mouth bite sized pieces every time. The fried rice is so flavorful, you don't even need to add soy sauce. The soup and salad appetizers are great too. They are on the smaller side but it's enough for me. I've been here for both hibachi and regular dine-in, and the service is admittedly hit or miss. The interior (and bathrooms apparently) could use also some work. The place had good ratings, so I stopped in for an early dinner on a Saturday. Restaurant was pretty empty. Requested hibachi seating for 2, but was told they had reservations coming so no hibachi was available. No problem, we could come a different day. Asked what the hours were for Sunday and the hostess said she did not know. I confirmed by repeating the question of the restaurant hours, and she said she did not know. She did not attempt to check. We usually come here every Wednesday for Happy Hour, last visit was November 13, 2019. We had a large variety of Nigiri containing Salmon, Squid, Smelt Roe and Yellowtail - they were all between $1 and $1.50. I also had a Miso Soup to start with. The service is very friendly and very welcoming, we love to be recognized as a repeat customer. We usually just sit at the bar, if you bring kids they may be excited by the big fish tank in the center of the restaurant. There's an own private parking lot right in front of the restaurant. You won't be able to see it from the main road, so just gps it. There are more fancy Sushi places in the Galleria area but we really enjoy the family atmosphere. Excellent tasty meats. The beef is especially tender. The fact that it's halal means the meat is humanely processed-- a big deal nowadays. Great for families, birthdays at the hibachi table. Great, convenient location. Friendly chef. The grills could be a little cleaner around the edges. What a fun night at Bonsai Fusion Japanese Steakhouse. Wednesdat night we arrived and asked to be seated at the bar so that we could enjoy our dinner and the Astros baseball game. Terrible new chef- I have been here more than a dozen times and always get hibachi so its safe to say I KNOW HOW THINGS ARE SUPPPOSED TO BE DONE. We got a new chef on this trip (Eller Villareal) and I immediately told him I wanted mild fried rice but my husband wanted his rice spicy. So he goes and gets a bottle or sriracha and puts it right by my husbands plate. Ok?? I thought maybe he didnt hear me so I said again my husband wants the chile oil in his rice. So he says they have to do that in back. Huh? My husband then says we always get it done this way so the chef says yes but they chile oil is in the back kitchen. Ok? So does he wants us to go get it? So he asks waitress to get and again he puts it by my husband. This time I'm just annoyed so I leave it alone. Next he starts our meat, shrimp and vegetables. He focuses on meat and the shrimp is on grill the whole time. Now shrimp is supposed to be appetizer and doesn't take long to cook. Well we got shrimp AFTER steak. It was rubbery and over cooked. Secondly they give these two sauces with meat. We got our meat and i asked waitress for sauce and she says chef has the sauce and tells him to give. Well it took another 20min after he done with everything to give us sauce. For 2 of us its $60 total to have ribeye hibachi which is a nice chunk of change. I grew up in Cypress and have been going to Bonsai for over 20 years. Today was the worst experience, service wise, I have ever had at Bonsai, or any restaurant honestly. 1. Waitress didn't know what beers they had and looked it up on her phone (?) even though the fridge is right there. Also there was difficulty making my lychee champagne. 2. Once the sushi came out, had to wait for someone so we could ask for napkins, chop sticks and soy sauce. 3. Once my food came out, had to wait for someone so I could ask for a fork. 4. I asked if they could turn on the TV as we were sitting at the bar in front of the TV. I asked if they could turn on a sports channel. Waitress had difficulty figuring out how to work the TV and then put on some animal channel showing animals eating and being attacked. I asked the waiter if he could please change it to something sports related. Waitress goes, "WHATTTT DON'T CHANGE IT." I said, "I specifically asked for a sports channel and do not want to watch dead animals while eating." The manager ended up coming over to change it because nobody knows how to work the TV. 5. Speaking of that, 90% of the time the waitress was sitting at the end of the bar, on her phone texting, with a sprite and a drink umbrella. Even when customers came in she did not put away her phone. This was right in front of where the manager sits. I do not know why a manager would allow such unprofessional behavior. I have worked at a few restaurants and that would not be allowed. 6. We ordered two pieces of sushi off of the happy hour menu but received two entire rolls so the order was entered in the system wrong. Not a huge deal...but definitely made our bill higher than originally expected. 7. THE KITCHEN MUSIC. OMG. It was blaring. When a song would end, I could hear the TV for 2 seconds, but once the next song came on, you don't hear anything other than the most annoying music in the entire world. 8. When we asked for the check, the waitress gave it to us and stood there until we put up our credit card. Felt rushed and awkward. Even more awkward was after my boyfriend signed and tipped, he kept the check next to him at the bar. The waitress kept coming over and asked us if we were all done because she likely wanted to see the tip. Again, unprofessional. There were a ton of other small things but these were the 8 that bugged me the most. I know the waiter and waitress are probably new, and definitely need a lot of training, such as providing soy sauce and chopsticks with sushi, napkins, fork etc. without having to be asked. I want to give props to the waiter for definitely trying his best and putting in a tremendous amount of effort. I cannot say the same about the waitress. Management, you need to step up, train your staff and get rid of people who make someone who has been going to your restaurant for over 20 years never go back again. read more

Yes, I am a fan I am a regular and I am a customer who totally gets "IT" when the service is great and the food is even better! (1.2 mi from our house) Their happy hour is wonderful ... the place is very small, but hey, they make up for it with superb quality dishes and awesome drink specials! I wish I could give this review no stars! We went in a group for a nice hibachi dinner for my best friends birthday. The service was horrible. They forgot to give us our soup appetizer. The waiter never came to check on us. I had to get up twice to ask for him. The cook didn't perform the show and we had 2 first timers. The portions were small from the salad to the veggies the chicken/steak. They didn't even sing my friend happy birthday. From beginning to end this place is horrible! Don't waste your time or money. Go to Shogun! The portions are bigger, the quality is better and it's even cheaper for hibachi! When I asked for a manager they said she's busy and it took 15 minutes for a young girl who I don't believe was the manager to come talk to us. She told me the cook has been complained on for not doing a show times prior. She said she would discount our meals. She came back a few minutes later saying the cook told her he did a show for us. I had her bring him out to lie to everyone's face. The girl told me there was some circumstances where she was not able fire that cook so they have to deal with him. We got our tickets, there was no discount and the gratuity was added. We waited 30mins for 10% off. The staff continued to apologize but given how the girl acted and handled the situation, she was not the manager. Ive been going to hibachi dinners for my birthday, friends birthdays and special occasions for over a decade. This was one of the worst experiences I have had.
