Absolutely delicious pizza place with fast service that isn't too fancy and has a very fast food type feel! I absolutely loved the taste of their pizza (coming from someone in nyc), and I loved their style: you get to try as many flavors as you want because you don't order by the slice, but instead your order by the size and you pay by the weight! As shown in the first photo, you can tell them how big you want them to cut a slice for you and then pick whichever options you want (slices change daily), and they will weigh them for you. The prices usually come out to $7-$10 for the ones in the picture (approximately 3 diff flavors) and then they cut them in tiny squares for you to make it easy to eat! What's more Chicago than pizza? Rather than throw myself into the deep dish civil war, I head for Bonci. But this isn't exactly going the safe route. This concept is unlike anything I've experienced before. Bonci is authentic Roman style pizza, handcrafted, scissor cut and served by weight. The entire concept is imported straight from Rome, where you'll find the original Bonci. I'm not sure which is more unusual, the pay per pound concept or the cutting of slices with scissors! 24 varieties of pizza is enough to make your head spin. A snowy frigid winter day + pandemic = no wait. I opt for a few favorites including the potato mozzarella and the spicy eggplant. It's truly remarkable how the quality of simple ingredients can take a pizza to heavenly heights. But ultimately the crust wins my heart. You can put mud on a Bonci crust and I'd still love it. Wish there was a 3.5 star option. The concept is nice, but I think this place is overhyped. I got the potato and mozzarella pizza, the pancetta(?) pizza, and the burrata pizza. I really enjoyed the burrata one, but the others were mid. The flavors just weren't really there for me. However, the price is very fair ($11 for me) for the West Loop location. First experience at Bonci and definitely a fan! There are so many interesting varieties of pizza. As someone who had a hard time making any food decisions, it gave me the opportunity to try a few different things since you pay per weight and can choose as big or small of a piece as you would like. I was so excited to find Chef Gabriele Bonci's second pizza location was located in Chicago! I had on my bucket list to visit his restaurant the next time I was in Italy but this exactly what I wanted right here in the US. The staff were very kind and knowledgeable of the menu and ingredients. The space is not very large so perfect for a date night or small groups. I would say this is my favorite style of pizza period. I visited my cousin and she suggested we go to Bonci to pick up pizza. It didn't disappoint. Tons of flavors and the lady behind the counter was helpful and polite. We ended up with a wide variety of slices: cacio pepe, pepperoni, Margherita, sausage and blueberry, prosciutto, potato and cheese, and my favorite of all, onion parm. She spent $75 for two boxes of pizza and we reheated at home. So much food and we snacked on it for the next few days. Can't wait to go back next time I'm in Chicago. read more

They offer a lot of different variety's between meaty and ones with a bunch of vegetables. You can order by the slice and they charge you by the pound. They're whole pizzas and you can even customize the size of the slice you want. Most pizzas are between $9.99 a pound to $14.99. We ordered Arugula, Dried Tomato and Bufala, Soppressata, and Margherita. All were very delicious. The one with arugula was very tasty and tasted fresh. The dried tomato went perfectly with the the bufala cheese. The margherita tasted just like any other oven baked margherita pizza but with a thicker crust. Just wished they would over this with bufala cheese as well. The soppressata tasted like an ordinary pepperoni pizza, but definitely much needed since they don't have any other meaty only options. We're very fortunate enough to this pizzeria in town. It's great for a one quick slice or if you ant to try different styles in one sitting. I'll definitely be returning. read more

I've been here a few times now. I have a love-hate relationship with this restaurant. The pizza is initially delicious and then greasy and oily. It's sort of what might make it so unctuous and delicious. Today I made the mistake of sitting at the counter where they make the pizza dough in front of you. I saw them dumping a plastic jug of oil into the sauce they use, and into a squeeze bottle that they squeeze over the pizza when they make it. I got a look at it and it's 90% canola oil and 10% olive oil. Here's the question. This is really expensive pizza so I figured it was because they use premium ingredients. But they're using cheap canola oil in a plastic jug. confusing because the quality of the flour is amazing. Thing is that after I leave I desperately need to drink a gallon of water in fact all afternoon long. Pizza doesn't have to be bad food. It doesn't have to be junk food but it can be. I'm very disappointed that they don't use 100% olive oil you would expect they would. I can't really be a fan otherwise. My office is right around here and I've been thinking about trying this restaurant. I swung in for lunch, and there was a decent crowd. Had some tables outside/inside that you could sit at, and a queue to order the food. Tons of pies to order from and it's all done based off the pound so they cut off however, much you want and then weigh it and heat it up for you. I got the pepperoni, the prosciutto, and the Arrabbiata. To be honest, I was kind of craving more considering the hype I've seen online and on Instagram. The prosciutto is by far my favorite with some rosemary on it. It was very good. I was just kind of craving maybe not as crunchy a bottom. I think a lot of times when you reheat pizza especially in a pizza oven. Sometimes the bottom of the pizza can get a little bit more cooked which gives it that crunch. Personally, that's not something I really enjoy. It may be different if you buy a pie out right and eat it fresh. I will definitely come check this place out. I may have to officially 'unhate' anchovies on pizza! We we missing the Rome style pizza from our trip a while back, but I read that there's a place that sells pizza by slice AND WEIGHT like in Rome, no triangles but squares. They DO NOT TAKE CASH but they do have canned wine/drinks as well as gelato (didn't try that though). What's great is it's already ready, but if you eat it here they heat it up. I did both; I got the spicy eggplant and the 2nd pizza had anchovies. Neither pizza had 'red sauce' so maybe that's the difference! I like anchovies in salads. They nice guys behind the counter would ask how large a slice you want then weigh it on a scale. I said I'd like to eat half a piece here and take the rest home. He took the spicy eggplant (very good but with red pepper, I didn't taste the eggplant) and placed it in the oven with olive oil for moisture. The portion sizes seem small but are virtually guilt free. The plate-sized, paper thin greasy stuff we see now does not compare! They also give you stickers with a cute cartoon to let you know how to re-heat the pizza. (it's a little more complicated than you think) Eating in was fine; It's not a very big place and I sat by the window and ate my pizza (so crunchy and light!) with canned white wine. (I should be ashamed of this but I'm not!). At home, we followed instructions and the anchovy pizza was awesome! A relative in my party tried some with pecorino and burrata, and it was good too. This is my first experience with Roman style pizza and I was already skeptical/grumpy about it. It's sliced by weight? Why would I want to go to a pizza place that measures it out like it's a butcher shop? it sounds like a terrible idea. However, the pizza here is really good, I didn't try anything super exotic, sausage and mushrooms, the potato one all of which were good and split with my friend who seemed to like the choices as well. Despite it being done by weight the pizza itself was filling without being super heavy. I had to put my own salt on top of it. The spicy arribata is very spicy, so beware. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because I wish the vegan options had like a vegan cheese to make it a more authentic Pizza. All 3 options were cheesless. To say that you are overwhelmed by the sheer number of pizza options here would be an understatement. We're talking pizzas that range with the traditional Italian toppings to those that you'd swear you only find in Asia (like octopus?!) Literally took me a good five minutes to finally decide which pizzas to order after gazing longingly at all my options. Bonci's pizza reminds me of Detroit style pie-crust pizza with the emphasis on both the breading and the toppings. I loved that you're able to eyeball how much pizza you want and are charged according to how much in weight the pizza ended up being. Needless to say, hungry fellas will need to restrict themselves before they end up ordering the entire table. I ordered their Potato Rosemary and Parmigiano w/ Fried Onions. For less than a pound of pizza, it came out to about $15. Both pizzas are baked before they're actually served to you so it keeps that freshness. Really enjoyed the two pizzas I had but wasn't completely wowed by the potato rosemary option. However, the mushroom made up for it completely. The Parmigiano was definitely the winner with the fried onions sprinkled on top. I'm glad I was able to try this spot with Nick M. because it definitely shows the prospects of how far pizza has come in this great city.
