Awesome pizza, especially if you like Roman style. So many different pizzas to choose from.

Roman-style pizza might not be the first type to come to mind when thinking about Chicago pizza, but Bonci, a small, casual spot with lots of choices (including vegan pizzas) where you pick exactly how much you want and pay by weight, is excellent. We got our pizza to go, trying four different varieties, but everything looked and sounded so good that it was difficult to narrow down the options. While they were all delicious, my favorite was the fried onion parmigiana pizza, followed by the potato mozzarella. Staff was friendly and helpful, and they cut the pizzas into however many pieces we needed before leaving. I would definitely return here for more amazing pizza. read more

Bonci, originally from Rome, Italy, and Chicago is fortunate to have a pizzeria like this in our backyard. Bonci is a great option for those who can't decide on what kind of pizza they want. They offer a lot of different variety's between meaty and ones with a bunch of vegetables. You can order by the slice and they charge you by the pound. They're whole pizzas and you can even customize the size of the slice you want. Most pizzas are between $9.99 a pound to $14.99. We ordered Arugula, Dried Tomato and Bufala, Soppressata, and Margherita. All were very delicious. The one with arugula was very tasty and tasted fresh. The dried tomato went perfectly with the the bufala cheese. The margherita tasted just like any other oven baked margherita pizza but with a thicker crust. Just wished they would over this with bufala cheese as well. The soppressata tasted like an ordinary pepperoni pizza, but definitely much needed since they don't have any other meaty only options. We're very fortunate enough to this pizzeria in town. It's great for a one quick slice or if you ant to try different styles in one sitting. I'll definitely be returning. read more

If you're looking for an unique and delicious pizza experience in the West Loop, Bonci is the place to be! This place has a wide variety of creative options and you get to choose the size of your slices. You can choose as many flavors as you'd like and you pay by weight in the end. The staff here are all very patient and nice. My bill came to around $10 for the photo attached. Absolutely delicious pizza place with fast service that isn't too fancy and has a very fast food type feel! I absolutely loved the taste of their pizza (coming from someone in nyc), and I loved their style: you get to try as many flavors as you want because you don't order by the slice, but instead your order by the size and you pay by the weight! As shown in the first photo, you can tell them how big you want them to cut a slice for you and then pick whichever options you want (slices change daily), and they will weigh them for you. The prices usually come out to $7-$10 for the ones in the picture (approximately 3 diff flavors) and then they cut them in tiny squares for you to make it easy to eat! Wish there was a 3.5 star option. The concept is nice, but I think this place is overhyped. I got the potato and mozzarella pizza, the pancetta(?) pizza, and the burrata pizza. I really enjoyed the burrata one, but the others were mid. The flavors just weren't really there for me. However, the price is very fair ($11 for me) for the West Loop location. I still like Parlor Pizza better but maybe I am just a fan of the wood-fired style. read more

Best pizza in Chicago hands down. Yeah sure y'all invented deep dish but the Michelangelo of pizza making decided to open up his second restaurant in Chicago to show you how pizza should be done. When you walk into the store you get to view all the pizza at your disposal. The staff will the cut slices using scissors to your preferred size and weigh it out. Your pizza then gets fired and you're on your way. You pay up front which is always a bonus. Unfortunately they were out of Suppli carbonara but when I had it in Rome it slapped. First experience at Bonci and definitely a fan! There are so many interesting varieties of pizza. As someone who had a hard time making any food decisions, it gave me the opportunity to try a few different things since you pay per weight and can choose as big or small of a piece as you would like. I really liked the lemon zucchini ricotta and the blueberry sausage. Wish the pizzas were a little warmer though! There is limited seating indoors and a small outdoor space. I wish i could come on here and say positive things but the only positive thing was the extreme helpful employee with blue hair, tattoos, and piercings. However, upon entering the manager( at west loop location) made an indirect homophobic comment about my husband and I. Additionally after being seated the chef, bald man with beard, waked by and I got a whiff of the most rank scent of OB. Crazy how health policies aren't a concern in a food restaurant. I immediately was nausous and couldnt finish the flat, greasey slice of pizza. Additionally, there were customers of Indian decent and he turned and said " the indians are the one you have to look out for". I was so excited to find Chef Gabriele Bonci's second pizza location was located in Chicago! I had on my bucket list to visit his restaurant the next time I was in Italy but this exactly what I wanted right here in the US. The staff were very kind and knowledgeable of the menu and ingredients. The space is not very large so perfect for a date night or small groups. I would say this is my favorite style of pizza period. I visited my cousin and she suggested we go to Bonci to pick up pizza. It didn't disappoint. Tons of flavors and the lady behind the counter was helpful and polite. We ended up with a wide variety of slices: cacio pepe, pepperoni, Margherita, sausage and blueberry, prosciutto, potato and cheese, and my favorite of all, onion parm. She spent $75 for two boxes of pizza and we reheated at home. So much food and we snacked on it for the next few days. Can't wait to go back next time I'm in Chicago. read more

UNDERSTANDABLY GREAT!! Went in over the weekend right when they opened. They opened a little after the published open time. We waited outside and a line started to form. Once they opened, I was the first one to the counter. The cashier was helpful. All but one pizza was ready (sausage & mushroom). I enjoyed how you could pick the size of your slice. I decided to try a small slice of every pizza available. All of the pizzas were tasty but here is my list of best to no so best: Soppressatta, Spicy Eggplant, Potato, Lemon Ricotta, Cheese, Arrabbiata, Pepperoni, Porcetto, Mushroom. The experience was pretty fast. After you pick out your slices all they do is heat them up. Overall, if you want high quality pizza this is the place to go. read more

Recently moved into a new office and was so excited to be able to try Bonci. I love to cut whatever pizza/ weight approach they have because you can always try new stuff. So far I've tried -burrata basil: 8.5/10 (so fkin good life fr) - pepperoni: 8/10 (pepperoni quality was superb) - sausage mushroom: 7/10 - lemon ricotta zucchini: 8/10 (great breakfast Za) - pepperoni sausage sport peppers: 8/10 (rotational- so good with the contrast of salty from Roni and spice from the pickled peppers) West loop where every lunch is $20-30 desperately needed this joint. Can just walk over and grab a quick slice or two for $5/10 and actually throughly enjoy it. Will definitely be back to try other rotational flavors! read more

I've been here a few times now. I have a love-hate relationship with this restaurant. The pizza is initially delicious and then greasy and oily. It's sort of what might make it so unctuous and delicious. Today I made the mistake of sitting at the counter where they make the pizza dough in front of you. I saw them dumping a plastic jug of oil into the sauce they use, and into a squeeze bottle that they squeeze over the pizza when they make it. I got a look at it and it's 90% canola oil and 10% olive oil. Here's the question. This is really expensive pizza so I figured it was because they use premium ingredients. But they're using cheap canola oil in a plastic jug. confusing because the quality of the flour is amazing. Thing is that after I leave I desperately need to drink a gallon of water in fact all afternoon long. Pizza doesn't have to be bad food. It doesn't have to be junk food but it can be. I'm very disappointed that they don't use 100% olive oil you would expect they would. I can't really be a fan otherwise. Oh and by the way, lose the styrofoam water cups and switch to paper. read more

Deliciously fresh pizzas and great tasting suppli. The suppli were a little over-done on the outside, but still tasted great (they weren't quite burnt thankfully). Last tried this chain in Rome, Italy and this Chicago location didn't disappoint. If I had any complaints, it would be price--the pizza is a bit on the pricier side for how much you get. read more

Love the concept of this place, rotating pizzas based on seasonal topping and produce that's available. Scissor cutting so you can choose how big you want your pizza which for someone like me who loves a bunch of different topping is AMAZING because I can get thin slices of multiple types. The crust is the right amount of chewy and crunchy and the toppings are always of great quality. The price is a little higher as they charge based on weight but for what you are getting, it's pretty worth it in my opinion! The staff is always super nice and you can get it warmed up or not. There is a lot of great pizza spots in the city of Chicago, but this Roman style pizza chain (it's a chain from Italy) has to be one of my favorites. I really love that you can order pizza by the weight / cut it up in whatever slice you want. I loved the lox pizza and my friend loved the spicy eggplant pizza. I also liked the burrata pizza. Short walk from the pink line stop at Morgan. They sell pizza by weight and you can choose whatever slices you want. We chose anchovies, fried onion, meatball, and sausage and mushroom. The concept is great, but I felt like everything could've used a bit more sauce! Anchovie is very salty, meatball was a bit dry. Bonci serves roman style pizza by the slice and has a variety of unique and interesting pizza ideas. My friends and I decided to go together and try out as many different pizzas as we could. We were thrilled to see several vegetarian options and felt like everything was pretty good but not special. I think our expectations may have been too high after watching the Netflix special about Bonci. Otherwise the service was warm and friendly. The seating was a bit more limited but we were able to find seats. I may have to officially 'unhate' anchovies on pizza! We we missing the Rome style pizza from our trip a while back, but I read that there's a place that sells pizza by slice AND WEIGHT like in Rome, no triangles but squares. They DO NOT TAKE CASH but they do have canned wine/drinks as well as gelato (didn't try that though). What's great is it's already ready, but if you eat it here they heat it up. I did both; I got the spicy eggplant and the 2nd pizza had anchovies. Neither pizza had 'red sauce' so maybe that's the difference! I like anchovies in salads. They nice guys behind the counter would ask how large a slice you want then weigh it on a scale. I said I'd like to eat half a piece here and take the rest home. He took the spicy eggplant (very good but with red pepper, I didn't taste the eggplant) and placed it in the oven with olive oil for moisture. The portion sizes seem small but are virtually guilt free. The plate-sized, paper thin greasy stuff we see now does not compare! They also give you stickers with a cute cartoon to let you know how to re-heat the pizza. (it's a little more complicated than you think) Eating in was fine; It's not a very big place and I sat by the window and ate my pizza (so crunchy and light!) with canned white wine. (I should be ashamed of this but I'm not!). At home, we followed instructions and the anchovy pizza was awesome! A relative in my party tried some with pecorino and burrata, and it was good too. I may try it again with 'mainstream' pizza, but on Morgan Street off the Green Line, this isn't too far out of my way! read more

This was my first time visiting Bonci as I was on business travel and my best friend took me here, it was amazing! You can pick whatever pizza you would like and the cook thing is you can even ask for the size you want (you could get a small piece or bigger piece) then they weigh the food and give you the amount you owe! Mine was around 7 dollars and it filled me up! The potato pizza was very unusual but tasted incredible!! This is my first experience with Roman style pizza and I was already skeptical/grumpy about it. It's sliced by weight? Why would I want to go to a pizza place that measures it out like it's a butcher shop? it sounds like a terrible idea. However, the pizza here is really good, I didn't try anything super exotic, sausage and mushrooms, the potato one all of which were good and split with my friend who seemed to like the choices as well. Despite it being done by weight the pizza itself was filling without being super heavy. The only thing I thought was disappointing was the arancini, it just didn't hit the spot like you'd expect a fried carb would. read more

My office is right around here and I've been thinking about trying this restaurant. I swung in for lunch, and there was a decent crowd. Had some tables outside/inside that you could sit at, and a queue to order the food. Tons of pies to order from and it's all done based off the pound so they cut off however, much you want and then weigh it and heat it up for you. I got the pepperoni, the prosciutto, and the Arrabbiata. To be honest, I was kind of craving more considering the hype I've seen online and on Instagram. The prosciutto is by far my favorite with some rosemary on it. It was very good. I was just kind of craving maybe not as crunchy a bottom. I think a lot of times when you reheat pizza especially in a pizza oven. Sometimes the bottom of the pizza can get a little bit more cooked which gives it that crunch. Personally, that's not something I really enjoy. It may be different if you buy a pie out right and eat it fresh. I will definitely come check this place out. The chef has a really interesting history and it is one of those hidden gems in Chicago that any foodie should try. read more

I was so excited when bonci first opened in Chicago. I've been to their wicker park location when they first came and I was not disappointed. Their flour comes from Italy and it is definitely different. You tell them how much pizza you want and they cut it with scissors. The price is determined by weight and they have some incredibly unique toppings. Such a cool concept! It almost feels like a deli but for pizza. They let you choose your slice size, cut it off the large rectangle of pizza, then put it in the oven and cut it into little pieces for you. The little pieces make it perfect for sharing! I wanted to try them all but settled on the burrata pizza, zucchini ricotta, and potato mozzarella. It was all very delicious, the burrata one was my fave. The potato mozzarella was good but a little salty. My sister got 2 of the vegan slices, arrabbiata and mushroom. I tried a little of each, very tasty. My husband got some yummy margherita slices! We came at like 1:30 and there were a ton of options left too. And it wasn't busy at all, not much seating inside, but we got a spot. Would definitely come back! read more

To say that you are overwhelmed by the sheer number of pizza options here would be an understatement. We're talking pizzas that range with the traditional Italian toppings to those that you'd swear you only find in Asia (like octopus?!) Literally took me a good five minutes to finally decide which pizzas to order after gazing longingly at all my options. Bonci's pizza reminds me of Detroit style pie-crust pizza with the emphasis on both the breading and the toppings. I loved that you're able to eyeball how much pizza you want and are charged according to how much in weight the pizza ended up being. Needless to say, hungry fellas will need to restrict themselves before they end up ordering the entire table. I ordered their Potato Rosemary and Parmigiano w/ Fried Onions. For less than a pound of pizza, it came out to about $15. Both pizzas are baked before they're actually served to you so it keeps that freshness. Really enjoyed the two pizzas I had but wasn't completely wowed by the potato rosemary option. However, the mushroom made up for it completely. The Parmigiano was definitely the winner with the fried onions sprinkled on top. I'm glad I was able to try this spot with Nick M. because it definitely shows the prospects of how far pizza has come in this great city. Bonci seriously fell off. When they opened, they had so many interesting and creative pizzas (mortadella and hummus!). Since then, it's always the same dozen boring pizzas. Quality has also declined. I see they're now in one of the Dom's locations and that makes sense because this is grocery store quality pizza at this point. If you're expecting Bonci's Pizzarium from Italy, this isn't anywhere close. It's more like an upscale Little Caesars. read more
