We ordered some food home. I tried the somosa chaat and the pillow with chicken and some roti. The flavors were good and I enjoyed it. The Samosa chaat was okay, it tasted a bit like it has bitter chicken sauce in it which was a turn off, other than that it was okay. Service was good. I didn't eat in so can't speak for the ambiance.

"Let me please introduce myself I'm a man of wealth and taste And I laid traps for troubadours Who get killed before they reached Bombay" (Jagger/Richards) I've seen this oddly shaped building with an Indian restaurant forever. I finally made my way in for a meal last night. The first thing you see when you walk in is the remnants of their old buffet table. They were known for their lunchtime buffets, but they're now a thing of the past. The good sized dining room has a tin ceiling, yellow painted walls, and dark brown furniture. As I sat down, a super friendly young guy brought me a complimentary plate of papadum cracker bread with ramekins of onion chutney and tamarind sauce. The tamarind was great, like a thick and sweet Hoisin sauce. Now it was time to check out their daunting five page menu. I wanted to try something different, and the phrase "prepared in the Afghan style" caught my eye. Since never have I ever tried Afghan food, I went with their $16.95 Chicken Balti. Served with Basmati rice, the menu described it as with "peppers, onion and cinnamon". I wasn't familiar with the word "Balti", so I researched it and learned the word means a metal pot from Northern India (near Afghanistan) that cooks the food and is then presented to the table for serving. When I ordered, my young waiter asked if I wanted it spicy, so of course I said yes. In a few minutes out came a bowl of Basmati rice and a Balti pot full of chicken chunks, sliced peppers and onions, in a delicious spicy brown curry. I LOVED my dinner! The curry was delicious, with plenty of the deep flavors I love in Indian food. And yes, it was medium spicy with a nice after-burn. I did think the chicken was a little overcooked, and far from tender. All in all, I loved my dining experience at Bombay. The food and smiling service were excellent.

Warm and cozy atmosphere. Wait staff was very welcoming and attentive. This may be my new favorite place. We were given Papadam and a delicious condiment (not sure what it was exactly but loved it). We ordered a few different dishes. I had Samosas and Chicken Tikka Masala, both were amazing. Loved the Garlic Naan!! My husband ordered Paneer Chili and Malai Kofta. Our drinks were Chardonnay and a Mango Lassi. For dessert we tried the Ras Malai with Masala tea. Delicious!! Will definitely be back.

Bombay Olive is a beautiful space with excellent ambiance. The people are incredibly friendly and worldly. Our food was excellent. We were so fortunate to find this delicious gem while out of our area for an appointment. We will return again! We ordered: Samosa Chaat (described on their extensive menu as: well-cooked vegetable samosa sliced and tossed with yogurt, onions, chickpeas, tamarind sauce, mint sauce, and chaat masala.) Channa Masala (described on their extensive menu as: chickpeas cook in Indian herbs. Masala is known as a royal dish. It is prepared with a tomato based sauce & a refreshing combination of ground onions and a touch of cream.) I asked for no cream. It was delicious. And we ordered basil naan. Theirs is the best naan I have ever tasted. Thank you, chefs and everyone at Bombay Olive.

Cute restaurant, it isn't that big but the decorations are nice. Mostly booths but a large party came in and several tables were out together for them, making the edge of their table pretty close to our booth, luckily we were almost done. The staff were very friendly. The menu was large so it was very difficult to choose! We got the samosas, which I liked but noticed the dough was a little salty for my taste, my boyfriend didn't even notice lol. I am pretty boring when it comes to my Indian food because I never get to really go out for so I got the baingan bhartha with medium spice, which was def a little spicier than I anticipated (I always get medium) but was very good! The garlic naan was good and my boyfriend said he enjoyed his meatball masala. It is only a few minutes from my boyfriend's house and he goes there often, but I would love to go back!

I've been eating from bombay olive for over a year now. Its my go to spot for indian takeout. My go to is butter chicken, chicken tikka masala with a side of rice, garlic naan and poori. It's absolutely delicious. The service is always great!

Following a recent third visit, I decided it was time to put in on the record. My introductory visit was a bachelor night and no where to go, except some place unique. Unique, because Bombay Olive is housed in a former IHOP where I spent many early and late night meals with friends and family in the '70's. It's architecture is unmistakeable on the outside and transformed inside to a comfortable Indian and Nepalese tavern. Visit One: I requested takeout and admitted I had really no idea what to order, so the kind staff ordered for me (within a mild heat range). Loved it right out of the carry out packaging; gosh I miss the good old bachelor dazes. Visit Two: In house, with the family. Gluten free options and a little more heat this go round. A mop towel was necessary for my brow and nape. Again, fresh, delicious, and an aromatic mix of spices. Visit Three: A FRYday night with the Mrs. Recent enough that I can actually remember the dishes! Fried Manchurian Vegetables (mild) and Chicken Madras (Medium and comfortable warm - mop towel necessary) the coconut hints throughout. We ordered a (very mild) Tikka Masala with Chicken for our GF customer back home.

The space is absolutely beautiful: modern, bright, and spotless. The food was fresh, flavorful, and came out piping hot. They bring each dish out as it's ready instead of all at once, so keep that in mind if you like everything served together. Personally, I didn't mind because it just meant my soup was perfect when it arrived, and my son's appetizer followed shortly after. I didn't check out the bathrooms this time, but judging by the rest of the restaurant, I'm sure they're just as immaculate. Black Bamboo is the only Chinese food I'll eat, period. If you know me, you know I'm picky, and this place never disappoints. Every bite tastes fresh, the service is friendly, and the vibe is always calm and inviting. Over the years I have had everything on the menu, and I've never had a bad meal. My personal favorites: the egg rolls, scallion pancakes, hot and sour soup and their fried rice, which I honestly think is the best in the world, period. My son is all about their beef teriyaki and it's his go-to every single time. This is exactly the kind of place where you can try something new and know it's going to be good. I recently ordered the chop suey and egg foo young for the first time ever, and both were fantastic. If you've been curious to branch out, this is where you want to do it; you can't go wrong. Also, they have real duck sauce for a small upcharge. Not just stuff in the packet (yuck). So if you're craving Chinese food in West Hartford, go to Black Bamboo. They recently opened a new location on Farmington Ave in West Hartford, but this spot is east of the old location. The new digs are nice inside. The dining room is not huge, but it's roomier than the old dining room. You still order at the counter even if you're dining in. Over the years, most of my food orders probably fall within the 4.25 Star to 4.5 Star range for a takeout type Chinese restaurant. Occasionally, they'll dip a bit lower or soar a bit higher. My General Tso's Chicken Combo meal with broccoli, pork fried rice and a fried shrimp egg roll was trending towards 4.5 Stars, but fell a bit short so I'm going to round down to 4 Stars since I can't give half Star ratings. The chicken was good quality and well cooked. The sauce was a bit sweet and sour-leaning on the General Tso's Spectrum. The shrimp egg roll was very good. It had two medium size shrimp rather than a bunch of mini shrimp. Pro Tip - I like the pork egg roll at a lot of places, but Shrimp is definitely the way to go at Black Bamboo. The pork fried rice was tan, which I mention because I always prefer places with the tan rice to places with the yellow rice. I've ordered a range of things at Black Bamboo over the years. Their sauces are not always like the sauces at other places. And what I really like about Black Bamboo is each Black Bamboo sauce tastes different than its other sauces. At other takeout places, a few different named sauces are just vaguely brown, sweet and spicy. Black Bamboo is one of the better takeout Chinese options in Hartford County. 4.4 Stars
