    Falafel Sandwich

Amanouz is a cute little restaurant right on main street in Northampton. It's counter service, so you order at the counter and they'll bring the food out to your table. You also bus your own table! I had some chai, which they bring in a cute silver teapot. There are a ton of veggie options to choose from. I had the falafel pita, which was yummy and filling. I also tried the almond baklava, which I had never had made with almonds before but it was sooo good. Other people ordered dishes with meat and said they were tender and well seasoned. I would definitely come back here! It's a cozy and affordable local spot. I would definitely come back here!

For yeeeeears, I passed by Amanouz Cafe, a casual Moroccan restaurant, when I walked through the Northampton Center. It became harder and harder to walk by as good word of mouth turned into great Yelp reviews. But since I've never lived in the Northampton area, I always stuck with my favorite spots. Also, Amanouz Cafe was often very busy. I finally visited for a late lunch last weekend. Although I liked portions of my meal, I suspect Amanouz Cafe was having an off day. There were three issues with my experience. First, I ordered a chicken tagine, and they gave me lamb tagine. Because the lamb was covered with stuff, I didn't even notice until I had a few bites of the non-meat parts. I was in a hurry and I like lamb, so I just kept it. I noticed that there were mix ups with orders at a couple other tables while I was there. Second, the texture of the bone in lamb was tough. It seemed overcooked, but perhaps it was a tough piece as well. Third, my table was cleared, but it hadn't been cleaned. I ordered and paid at the counter, and then I chose a table. Only one table had a bit of separation from other guests. After I sat, I noticed food patches had been left on the table. Notwithstanding these hiccups, I saw enough that I would return. The rest of the tagine, which is essentially a stew with peas, olives, onions, dates or figs, etc., was very good. It was well seasoned. Warm flavors. Slightly sweet. Service and the atmosphere were both fine. I've got to give 3 Stars based upon my experience, but I definitely plan to give Amanouz another chance.

    Coconut water, Babaghanoush Sandwich

Service was quick, but 1. They charged $5 for a small box of coconut water. Which was visibly the Costco brand-- in other words, it was obviously much cheaper in bulk than what they sold it for. Should've been more like $2 max. 2. The baba ganoush sandwich was absolutely not worth it. 40% of it was chunks of lettuce and there was no seasoning other than a metric ton of black pepper that drowned out even the faintest note of the eggplant spread. It was like biting into a can of mace. Baba ganoush is supposed to be smoky and delicious with a bit of tartness, the pepper was not right. So yeah, quick service, but jacked drink price and an unbelievably poorly seasoned sandwich.

    Avocado salad; delicious

Out of sight delicious. I'm just upset that I haven't eaten here before. What a great meal at an affordable price, and they also have outdoor seating which is great during these Fall days. Staff was great, service was great, and they're always busy so you may have to wait but its worth it. Their salads are outstanding. I had the avocado salad and the daily special of swordfish cooked in a tagine. It came with yellow saffron rice, vegetables, and of course the freshly cooked sword fish. You have to order their specialty moroccan mint tea, it was unlike anything I've ever tasted. We were too full to eat dessert there so we grabbed some to go and I can also confirm that they're fantastic. Just a great meal all around! Already making plans to go back.

We started with the beets and peas salad, which was bursting with flavor--our plates were practically licked clean. The house arugula salad was crisp, fresh, and perfectly balanced with a light, lemony vinaigrette. For mains, we shared the roasted half chicken and the bucatini. Both were phenomenal. I rarely order chicken at restaurants since it often feels too plain, but this one was perfection--crispy skin, juicy meat, and seasoning that carried through every bite. The bucatini, made with homemade pasta and loaded with crispy pancetta, was absolutely irresistible. We got there around 1:40 p.m. and they closed at 2, so my friend was a little worried, but we were still welcomed and the staff was very friendly. It's a small place, but I actually liked that it felt cozy. We ordered 12 oysters, two orders of gumbo, a kale Caesar salad, the catfish special to split, and a bourbon-based drink. The oysters were $2 each, which I thought was a pretty good deal. The gumbo was really, really good. It came out a little lukewarm, but the flavor was absolutely there 10/10. The oysters were fresh and also 10/10. The bourbon drink was another standout. The presentation was beautiful, the little flower was such a nice touch, and it tasted just as good as it looked. The kale Caesar was where things dipped a little. It was pretty dry, so we asked for extra dressing, but the dressing didn't really add much flavor. When our waitress checked in, we were honest and said it just wasn't our favorite. I hate sending food back or complaining. I'll usually just stop eating it but she was so kind and apologetic. What really stood out was how they handled it. They told us they were taking the salad off the bill, which they absolutely did not have to do. We had planned to just take the one we had already eaten from home and fix it ourselves, but one of the staff members made us a completely new salad to go. She even massaged the kale so it was actually tender and enjoyable. That was such a thoughtful touch. The catfish was a hit for my friend. It wasn't my favorite, but I still ate it. Overall, I would definitely come back. Next time I'd probably keep it simple; oysters, gumbo, and a drink and I'd be happy. The service was phenomenal, and honestly, service really makes a place. Feeling welcomed and comfortable matters, and this place absolutely gave that.
