Great food and great location. My family and I stopped here on the road back to Dallas from Mexico and we're starving. Usually, I'm not a huge fan of Indian, but since my mom is vegetarian, I gave it a try. I had the samosa sandwich (spicy), and the spices and flavors all blended together so well. The reason I deducted a star is because the high chair we used for my brother was dirty with old food from the previous user. I'm pretty picky about cleanliness in restaurants, but other than that, Bombay Express was a great experience that I would definitely return for. read more

Thank God that the chutney didn't taste stale like it usually does in most places Thali - can be a hit or miss - the paneer curry was delicious. Quantity of carbs as in rice and poori is good. Food was great (so many vegan options!). We got pav bhaji, dabeli, a vegan thali, aloo tikki, and pani puri and they were all really tasty. The pav bhaji was probably my favorite. I would have given them two more stars if they didn't use so much single-use plastic/styrofoam for their food. I understand it's a cafe, but there's no need to serve dine in food in styrofoam. I do appreciate that some of the food was on paper plates though. As someone trying to reduce her plastic waste, this was unacceptable. Ordered onion dosa , chole puri Dosa is so thin like a papad...it started crumbling into pieces...i had a feeling of eating some lays or doritos chips. Got a Postmates delivery from here. I would put them at 3.5 stars. Got a noodles, fried rice and chicken manchuria. The taste is pretty close to Indo-Chinese food you get in India. But the dishes were way too oily. The oil subdues the actual taste of the food. read more

The amount of great food for the price is astonishing. My wife and I discovered this place on accident. We tried four dishes and they were all excellent. The owner told us if we didn't like anything or if it was too spicy they would exchange it for free. He also brought out some free samples for us during our meal. Arrived into Austin after 2 flights and a layover and got to the hotel around 7pm not knowing the area too well I decided to try here since it was right behind the hotel. Walked in not knowing it was a vegetarian/vegan restaurant looked over the menu and had no clue what to order so just picked 3 random things. Suddenly after placing my order and paying I sat there and realized nothing had meat in it. At first I got mad thinking I wouldn't like it and what's a meal in Texas with meat!! What makes for a 5 star food review? For me, it has to deliver exactly what my soul craves - I know the real deal after just one bite of that type of food. I loved this place. It's located in a little shopping area right by parmer and 35. you walk in, walk up to the front to order, then pick a table and seat yourself. the chai is hot and simple, not sweetened. We ordered, took a number and they kept our tab open in case we wanted more. The food was quick, hot and fresh! We ordered: two chai teas mango lassi - perfect, my toddler drank it so quick, we didn't get more than a sip. Papdi Chaat - $5.50 chick peas, potatoes, fresh herbs and spices topped with yogurt and a mint chutney on a bed of "crispies". this dish spoke to me, it was just perfect. the cold yogurt all mixed up with the the savory cilantro and onions, crispy little fried chips and mint chutney. it was like an indian frito pie. I could eat it every day for a week, no joke. I ate here on a Sunday night and was SAD when i left that I couldn't come back for lunch the next day, because they are closed on Mondays. It was comfort food, to the nth degree. Masala Dosa $6.99 - a fine crepe made with rice batter filled with seasoned potatoes, served with a lentil soup and yogurt dipping sauce. we all dug in, my toddler loved the crepe and my bf and i loved it all. everything here is vegetarian and I know I will be back, over and over again. I'm a carnivore. Like suck the marrow out of the bone type of carnivore. So when my boyfriend and I went here I nervously whispered "is this place vegetarian!?" I braced myself for disappointment. The menu is broken down between southern and northern dishes. I wasn't familiar with any of the offerings so I let my boyfriend order for me. It was like one of those old movies where the man orders for the woman, except in this case the woman was irritatingly hungry and the wrong selection from the man could result in him getting shanked. He ordered me the Mysore Masala Dosa and he had the Thaali. I had no idea what to do with my dosa. It was this giant triangle served with two curries. My boyfriend, clearly ashamed/amused by my inexperience, broke off a piece of the dosa, dipped it in the creamy coconut chutney and told me to eat it. The flavor was incredible! The spiciness of the potato and onion filling went perfectly with the cool, light coconut chutney. It was a huge portion and I'd get it to share next time. I finished almost all of it though. My boyfriend out ordered me though with the thaali. Well, technically I guess he out ordered himself since he ordered for the both of us. All the veggies side dishes, dips, chutneys etc were great. I don't know a lot about Indian food and I really can't tell you the name of anything I've eaten here. However quality and taste are pretty universal, and literally everything here is excellent. Plus you know you're in the right place when all the other customers are Indian. Texans haven't yet figured out a way to screw up Indian food and serve it to white people. When they start serving Tex-Ind, I'll stop coming. If you want to save yourself the trouble and embarrassment of ordering, just go with the daily special. It's always a ton of food and a platter of different dishes I couldn't begin to pronounce. Who needs meat? This shit is good!!! To die for is the mango lassi - so delicious! Yummmm!!! While it is located in the Wal-Mart plaza, Bombay Express is not exactly cheap - I never get out of Bombay Express without spending $12 on a meal, but maybe because I can't stop myself from spending $3 on the mango lassi. And I agree with whoever said that it's not cool how all the dishes and silverware are styrofoam and plastic. Bombay express is one of the popular spots for vegetarian Indian cuisine. It is located at the intersection of IH 35 and Parmer lane tucked away in the back of a shopping center. This cafe is my go to spot for quick bites in the evening. The menu is composed of chaats(savoury snack), north/south Indian treats, and thalis. A lot of vegan choices available too. These are my favourite picks from the menu - Samosa,kachori,Puri Bhaji's,Spicy Paneer Roll,Pav bhaji,Uttapam, and Dosas. Dosas are large and delicious. I found the filling inside the Masala dosa huge but tastes average. Thalis served are fresh and tasty. The atmosphere is casual, Bollywood music is played in the background. The decor is simple. Food(almost everything) is served on paper plates taking the street food theme indoors. The service is quick and everything here is reasonably priced. ohh yes as i was sitting in the froyo shop across the parking lot, i eyed this restaurant and knew this was where i wanted to go for lunch. i've been indian food deprived! so i walked in and the fresh smell of spices and curry filled the air. mmmm they have northern as well as southern indian dishes available to order. for two people i ordered: 2 samosas ($2.25) Pani Puri ($3.99) Masala Dosa ($6.50) I sat down and the Pani Puri was first to come out. fill it with sweet mango sauce and it was heaven with every bite. i just wish the potatoes were somewhat warm instead of seeming like it came out of the fridge. This place has pretty decent Southern-Indian food. A coworker took me here today for my first time and it reminded me a lot of my favorite Indian place, SWAD. All vegetarian. Fast service. "The korma isn't vegan, I can swap it with the chickpeas." I'm a little sad I forgot that korma is cream based, but not at all sad that I still went with the thali. Also, major props to the staff for knowing what's vegan and what isn't without having to run ask someone. AND, you can't tell from the online menu very obviously, but almost everything on the menu either already is, or can be made vegan (korma wasn't on the regular menu). And the portions are totally filling. I will say that I'm used to taking home left overs when I go out to eat because typical portions are so huge, so if you're someone who always cleans your plate on American super sized portions you may want to get an additional side. My co-worker had never had Indian food before and this place came up in my search for local restaurants. It wasn't difficult to convince him to try it with me thankfully. He was a little nervous having no idea what the menu meant so I asked the guy behind the register for a suggestion. He said we should try their dinner special and explained it changed daily so we both ordered it. I can't for the life of me remember what exactly it was but I do remember it was delicious. One of the sides was some sort of potato dish that I could easily over eat if given the chance. This is one of my favorite Indian joints in town. While menu items like tikka masala, tandoori chicken or biryani, are good, you won't find them here. According to Wikipedia, less than 30% of India's population are regular meat eaters. Hence, this is South Indian vegetarian fare, much of it vegan. Often times, vegetarian food is associated with light and simple. That is not the case here. No dainty bunny grub, this food is hearty and filling, with interesting flavors. I am especially fond of the coconut chutney they serve with many dishes. I've been frequenting this place since it opened a few years ago, and unlike the other reviews, I've always found the owners to be friendly and pleasant. The atmosphere is bright, clean and cheery, overall much nicer than Swad. If you are looking for a yummy vegetarian Indian restaurant, please do the needful and check this place out! read more

This is my go-to place for lunch. I go at least once a week and it has become my favorite comfort food. The menu is 100% vegetarian and much of the menu is vegan (or can be made that way). I came in here not knowing it was only vegetarian but the food turned out okay, but i've had better. This is a great place if you're wanting to fill up quickly. They serve you the food on paper trays so after you are done, you just throw it away. The cashier recommended to me the daily special which came with one curry, rice, side of beans, salad, soup, and bread. The curry and rice was yummy but the beans were terrible. They were sitting in this red oil and the soup tasted like regular american bean soup. My friend ordered the Gulab Jamun, which are dumplings made with condensed milk and soaked in a rose-flavored syrup. I thought the dumplings would be crispy but they were soggy from sitting in the syrup. They also use the same oil that they fry the dumplings with other foods so the dumplings tasted slightly weird. read more

This place is OK, but not good and not at all near to being the best place for Indian food. Many times the food does not have that freshly prepared look and taste. Masala Dosa was terrible, have stopped being there ever since! Apparently I don't need to get new friends as I stated in my last review. Last week my carnivore neighbor and his lentil-hating wife came over to tell me about this great new restaurant they'd tried. Apparently the quality of the food here will convert anyone!!! I've been back a bunch of times now with all kinds of groups of people. Have tried lots of appetizers, the special (both weekday and weekend versions) and many of the main dishes and nothing has disappointed us yet. This place is one of North Austin's best kept secrets. read more
