I was finally able to check off Boichik off my list! It seems like an east bay staple at this point and was horrible that it took me so long. There was a line but it went relatively quick! To be honest, I'm not the biggest bagel connoisseur...so I don't have extremely high standards or anything. For me, the bagel was delicious! And I definitely ate the whole thing. As did my partner! This isn't something we can have often as it's definitely a pretty pricey bagel. I think my partner's lox one was about $20? Boichik is pretty darn good. Came in with my friend who lives in nyc- and we're both lovers of pop up bagel and Tompkin Sq. We had to see if Boichik could pass the test. Just got a simple everything with scallion CC. The bagel itself was decent. Good amount of bagel seasoning and it was a really good blend!! It was more chewy and soft- I prefer a hard toast or crunchy exterior to compliment a chewy inside. The bagel I would say is just a solid bagel. The cream cheese on the other hand... CRAZY. My coworker came up with this "top of the bagel" theory when he caught another coworker always taking the top of the bagel at our office and leaving the less than desired bottom for the rest of the staff. Essentially, he was telling her to her face she always took the best for herself. LOL. Anyway, that said theory wouldn't hold with boichik bagels because the bottoms are just as delicious, if not moreso, than the tops! I'm scratching my head on how they get the bottoms so darn crispy! So now you have the top with the super yummy toppings, the uber crunchy bottom, and a chewy inside. Slather some whipped cream cheese of your choice in there and you're golden! Food: Eggything Bagel with Plain Cream Cheese: Bagel - overall pretty good, got my bagel toasted, with plain cream cheese. I heard about this bagel place from The NY Times article that (falsely) declared California bagels better than NYC bagels. As a (current) New Yorker for many years, i would never have believed this, so I decided to give these a try. Now that I've tried these, I can confirm that the article was false because NO place outside of NYC can replicate New York bagels - the water in NYC makes those bagels much fluffier than anywhere outside of it. I'm not saying you shouldn't eat bagels if they're outside NYC, but I don't think you can fairly or accurately compare any bagels to New York bagels. This bagel (Pumperthingle [pumpernickel everything] with kite Hill cream cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers, and onion) was fine for out here but doesn't come close to comparing to New York bagels. The price of the classic is kinda steep for a bagel sandwich and I thought it was too salty with the chunks of lox in there. It sorta of was not my favorite. I like the everything bagel with horseradish cheddar scallion spread but I felt that the horseradish flavor was not consistent. One side of the bagel had a slight hint of it but the other side of the bagel had a strong taste of it. I personally think this was is a bit overhyped but it is worth trying once to know why this is popular. Darn! I so wish this was going to be a happy place for me in my long pursuit of a grand bagel on the west coast. Alas, it wasnt. I'm not saying they claim to beat our bagels back east but.... Here we go: I ordered a toasted onion bagel with xtra cream cheese and tomato and cucumber. My kid got an everything toasted with butter. The woman helping was ok to deal with but laughed at my extra cream cheese and NY attitude. What I got was a bagel with about an oz of cream cheese, a slice of tom and a slice of cucumber. My kids bagel was cold as was mine and hard and both not at all toasted. Oh and the gurl handing me the bag gave me a knife and cup to take off the cream cheese cause it may be too much. Just wow! oh and this was $11. Few things about real bagels back east: our bagels are crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside and we use about 8oz at least of cream cheese. Additional inside ingredients are plentiful... butter, pbj, veggies etc. we don't need to toast them when they are fresh and we are told when they aren't so THATS when we do... rare tho. While people can argue about the NY Times article where it knighted this place as the best bagels in the US, I can say it's the best bagels I've had outside of New York and Montreal. I lived in New York for 8+ years so I've had my fair share of bagels. These bagels are doughier (official word) and have the density characteristic of New York bagels. I like them more so than Beauty's (which sadly is just a Wise Sons now), which is more Montreal style. It's $3 a bagel, which is certainly on the high end. I've seen some of the reviews here saying they're from NY and think they're too pricey & Noah's is just as good. All I can say about those people is that they're clearly not from New York - maybe Long Island but not from the 5 boroughs. Thankfully the crazy hype has ended and the lines are not too crazy: we went on Labor Day and the wait from lining up to receiving food was roughly 15 minutes. Pro-tip: If you don't want to wait in line, they have their bagels (frozen) in the bagel section at Berkeley Bowl. They taste pretty darn close to fresh when toasted back up. read more

I heard about this during my last semester at Cal, a hard couple blocks away, and overheard it from my fraternity brothers that we should all walk to Boichik bagels after Passover (no bread for about a week) groundbreaking, or so I thought. Took me four months to get my hands on these golden puppies. There was a long queue after I parked my scooter across the street but even at a distance, it was moving forward. Took my bagel to Willard Park and enjoyed this goodness at a total max while listening to the Beatles. Toasty crispy exterior and soft interior with a whole whip of schmear, bits of fresh lox, the crunch of the red onion, and the freshness of the tomato. Looked like a child in the middle of the green lawn on a warm Friday morning in Berkeley wiping my face clean not caring what the world thinks of my bagel and me. These small moments are so worth it.
