Bob's pizza is my favorite pizza in Chicago (excluding deep dish. Today we got the pickle pizza and the sausage (+mushrooms). The pickle pizza sounds a little weird but was creamy and delicious. The little crunch from the pickles plus the savory ham on the perfect texture crust. The sausage is excellent as well, comes with pickles onions that provides a nice sour note. I can attest to all the other pizzas too, they're all delicious (except the Korean bbq, tbh). Bob's is also the best value in the city because they have BOGO from 4-5pm on weekdays! read more

First, excellent for them to expand and have more locations. I can't blame them, because I would do the same. However, the quality does seem to be hit or miss these days (versus the good old days when they were a new restaurant). Twice now something has been missing in an appetizer (no pickled onions with the meatballs, and literally not one shred of Brussels sprout in the Brussels sprout and arugula salad---plus it seems like it does not come with the Parmesan bread any more). And the crust quality depends on the night. Pizza seemed to be not as large as I remember either. Customer service wise, they are always very kind and polite, but are not proactive in righting what went wrong. Seems like another case of getting too big for ones britches with the expansion, but hey, I'd probably do the same. read more

A few days ago I was walking up 21st Street from Ashland towards Paulina. I used to live nearby but moved further west in October, so it had been a while since I had walked this particular stretch in the daytime. From a distance I noticed that what was previously a "Gino's East" sign now said "Bob's Pizza". This was surprising to me so took a couple photos (Fig 1). I think I went to the Gino's East once during its tenure and was underwhelmed because the personal pan pizza appeared to be indistinguishable from their frozen personal pan pizza which can be purchased from any number of super markets. Filling, though lacking substance. A day later two friends and I were finishing up a couple of beverages and some discussion and after sharing mutual intrigue we decided to walk over at around 9:00 (It should be noted that Bob's is open until 11). We entered and were delighted to find that Bob's is a counter service style pizzeria. We settled on the spinach pesto & stracciatella pizza (substituting prosciutto for mushrooms, and adding heirloom cherry tomatoes (fig 2). After inquiring about alcohol (BYOB), I jolted off to Carniceria Maribel for some beverages. I would recommend purchasing alcohol from La Providencia across the street (fig. 3) if you make it to Bob's before 9. I returned to find that my friends had ordered the Monkey Bread (garlic butter, herbs, tomato sauce, house cheese blend), which was a delicious savory version of what I had grown up eating. The pizza arrived and it's fair to say we were gushing a bit. The pizza was sizable and the baker's care and investment were evident (fig. 2). The pizza is thin but not razor thin, with a chewy yet flaky, slightly charred crust. The three of us had two slices each and were completely content. While finishing our beverages we were greeted by one of the Bob's (Matthew, the owner I believe), who gave us a rundown on the pizzeria. He left and returned with some complimentary house-made oatmeal cream pies which one of my friends said was delicious (I was personally too full to consider dessert). This is the best pizza I've had in Pilsen, and its up there with the best non-Chicago style pizza I have had in the city. A definite go-to. read more

I like meatballs but never go crazy over them but then I came here - Chef Told us to make mini meatball sandwiches with the freshly baked bread rolls, black pepper aoli and pickles.... DA BOMB. This place gets it right. The service was really warm and friendly without being overbearing, like they really appreciate you just bring there. We took advantage of their BYOB and the ambiance was just perfect with drinks and their booth seats and, of course, the pizza. Speaking of the pizza, this is not just your casual pizza joint. The pizzas are unique and delicious. I would never in my dreams imagined enjoying a pizza with pickled onions on it and this place proved me soooo wrong. I'm actually still drooling about that pizza from time to time. The pizzas are huge so they're actually a good value for the price too. We split one among 3 ppl and got two different halves. The one thing I will say is that they're a bit messy (NY style) so maybe not the best first date spot, but perfect for a night out with friends. Uh, so these guys know their dough. Seriously. Don't know what prior baking experience, if any, the owner/kitchen hands got, but this is a soft, buttery, crispy thing, Silverton-esque, if you will. Pizza I ate, the seafood scampi, was overall very good, would have benefitted from a little more acid, perhaps preserved lemon or simply lemon wedges on the side for squeeze drizzlin'. But that crust, I'll take it over Bebu's, or Piece's, or Dante's or Coalfire's, any non-traditional Chicago pizza place you want to throw at me. Great pizza with an incredible dough. Thin (not cracker thin) and crispy with a delightful chew. Hand tossed to order (which does take more time depending on how busy they are) results in a light crust pocketed with crunchy bubbles. The standard pizza is 16", but an 8" is available if you walk in. No slices are sold here. At first this bummed me out until the owner explained why. Simply put, they cook every pie to order, fresh fresh fresh. And you can't cook a slice. You won't find half eaten pizzas under a heat lamp here. I recommend a traditional sausage pizza (thiers is topped with pickled onions, a hint of lemon) and the meatballs (house pickles, pickled onions, black pepper mayo, and biscuit like bread). Currently Bob's is BYO, there is a liquor store across the street (closes at 9pm) and they keep it cold for you. They said they are getting thier license soon, as well as a patio. Happy hour? Yes! HORRIBLE!!!!! I'm shocked this place has maintained 5 stars out of 193 reviews. The posted photos give the impression of high-quality, wood-fired pizza. I'm guessing business has slowed and they try cutting cost by any means. It's seems like they don't preheat their ovens and undercook to save energy costs. Then they sparsely sprinkle low-quality, stored ingredients after cooking the pizza. The pickled onions is a great facade to sound fancy yet store a cheap ingredient. The "wild mushrooms" are also just plain canned mushrooms. You can see the toppings are not cooked in the oven with the pizza. The "oven-roasted wings" taste like greasy jerky. It's clear they try to revive dry, old, shriveled wings by soaking the in oil. The oatmeal cookie sandwich was so undercooked and oily that it melts out of your hand in a bad way. read more

I was really anticipating coming here prior to my visit & my experience in the Pilsen neighborhood has been successful up to this point. Unfortunately I wasn't pleased with the chicken sausage with hot sauce pizza. The sole reason for the two stars is the dough which is nice however that's where my compliments stop. The chicken had no flavor & the consistency of a hot dog. I detected no garlic flavor with my pie & as a garlic lover this added to my dissatisfaction. There's definitely some effort going on here & I think the place has some potential. We really enjoyed our food. It shows that they take pride in creating some tasty eats. We had Bob's sausage pizza and it was amazing. The crust was perfect and the sauce was bright and flavorful. The cheese was the right amount of gooey and toasty. Like it has those nice crispy brown spots but it still stretches when you bite it. The wings are also done right. These wings aren't masked in a pool of sauce. They speak up with a bold crispy skin that hits you with waves of heat and sweet. Their blue cheese sauce is an easy top 5. You actually get bits of cheese and some other amazing things that make it a standout. Lastly, the fries were on point. Crispy crunchy outside, not greasy or salty. Just fries done right. I set out to try as many pizza places as possible in Chicago during the pandemic, and Bob's is one of the top choices in all of Chicago, and my favorite that delivers to my house. They claim the style to be "Pilsen-Style" which I haven't seen anywhere else, but basically it's New York Style meets hand-tossed with a twist - they use BEER in the crust recipe. In the end, you have a big pizza, with big pieces that are sturdy enough to be picked up without folding, has a bit of a crunch but also doughy enough in the best way possible. They have a bunch of specialty pizzas which I haven't had the chance to try yet because my wife isn't too adventurous with her pizza order, but I'll get them in soon. Hands down, my favorite pizza I've ever had. Full stop. And I've eaten a LOT of pizza. The best is the Spinach Pesto (the salty prosciutto and gooey stracciatella with the pesto... so good), but I also really like either pepperoni or sausage with the spicy honey drizzle. The ingredients are always fresh, and the meats are very high quality - I usually hate sausage on pizza, because at most places it's dry and flavorless, but Bob's sausage is almost like tiny fennel-y meatballs. We've gotten takeout from Bob's twice now. The first time we got the sausage pizza and the second time we got the pepperoni pizza and wings (garlic parmesan). The pizza is kind of like NY-style but not really. They call it Pilsen-style, but that probably doesn't help you figure out what you're getting into. It's not deep dish, thin crust, or tavern-style. The dough/ crust is very good - crispy but not crunchy or hard. The sauce is flavorful and there's a proper amount of it. Sauce is my favorite part of a pizza, so I never want to skimp on it. I usually get pizza with extra sauce, but the dough-to-sauce-to-cheese ratio was great. And the cheese is in interesting blend with lots of seasonings. I liked both pizzas, but surprisingly enjoyed the pepperoni more... even though I usually don't like pepperoni. When we had the sausage, there seemed to be more cheese and the blend was kind of funky/ unique, so it caught me off guard. My husband actually fell in love with the sausage pizza and prefers it over the pepperoni, despite his usual preference for pepperoni. He's now obsessed with Bob's and said he would give them 10 stars. The wings were fine, but I'm not craving to try them again. I think Bob's will become our new regular pizza stop, especially now that Pizza Fried Chicken Ice Cream isn't in Bridgeport anymore. I loved the pizza and ambiance at Bob's but I took a star off because I feel like the appetizers and salads are fairly expensive for their portion size. We ordered the tomato and mozzarella salad and it was more like a side salad for one person! The Parmesan wings were good, but again, four wings only for $11 is a bit steep. The pizza on the other hand, is huge, priced well, and absolutely delicious. we got the sausage with mushroom and the pickle pizza. It reminds me of the slices I got back in New York City.
