I moved to The Whittier Neighborhood in May of 2015 and stumbled upon this awesome corner nook coffee shop on Lyndale Ave and 27th in Uptown. Ordered some coffee on the way to work, not only was the price right on, but the customer service which I have been provided there has been exceptional. Micky always greets with a smile, she knows my regular drink and often times has it done by the time I reach the register. Oh and not-to-mention, I can always count on a selection of classic tunes which bring back the nostalgia of what it is like to listen to good and real music! Three years ago, I basically signed my life away to grad school. Since then, coffeeshops around uptown been my daytime home, and I take simple joys eating out given I don't have time to cook. Until my defense in the coming week, I have been a hermit hiding behind my laptop writing painfully long papers. #sociallifedead With that said, I try to seek places with some personality to keep me sane if I have to sit in a spot for several hours long. Bob's Java Hut just fills that void. I love the atmosphere in here. Coffee and chai are decent. But what makes it are the people (bikers), the open space (windows all around with plenty of lighting), and consistent wifi. I recall a year ago when we had a power outage that the barista at the shop was nice enough to let me stay nearly all day so I can get my phone and laptop charged. They are also dog friendly which i absolutely love. Many customers walk in to get their daily dose of caffeine with a furry companion trailing behind. (they also have dog treats on the counter, which i think is sort of adorbs). The biker, harley davidson feel to this place somehow appeals to me. it brings back memories of me in high school when I had colored hair with streaks; wore black leather jacket, cropped tops, black jeans and black boots (see a theme?); and dated older dudes with motorcycles. #sorrynotsorry #oksorryparents #teenrebel #demonchild The only reason I gave a 4 out of 5 stars is because they have such a limited food selection (only daily made sandwiches, muffins, scones, bagel, and cookies). So I tend to not go to coffee shops, but Bob's Java has made itself the exception. One of the many reasons I don't usually go to coffee shops is that I don't drink coffee, so this is a review mostly regarding Bob's atmosphere and service. Reasons why I am in love: - The place sells soda in a can. Trust me this is something to note. - The molasses cookie with icing is the best cookie I have ever seen or consumed. I cannot write enough about this cookie, and if I wasn't going to be judged I would purchase two, stack them on top of each other, and eat them before I even take a seat. - The service is great. Besides not drinking coffee another major reason I don't go to independent coffee shops is the emotional baggage you get with your order. I never understood what entitled some punk, liberal arts college drop-out Barista to be so dismissive to customers? Don't worry, none of that b/s happens at Bob's. - When I go sit some where in public I don't want to feel like I am in an opium den so I really love all the huge windows and natural light! - The customers are eclectic and keep to themselves, but are not so ice cold that you don't feel like you could strike up a conversation need be. - The music is diverse and played at a reasonable volume. I hate going to a coffee shop and mistaking it for a rock concert. Most people do not want obscure hardcore music or your friend's bands B-side blaring at them at 9-am. Since it is frozen here for half the year, I am glad I found a place that allows me to be comfortable outside of my house! read more

Bob's is an experience. When I walked in, I had no idea I was walking into a biker coffee joint. And I loved it! Especially great in the summer when the large front windows open wide over the bar counter seating up front. Bob's Java Hut is classic biker bar with caffeine instead of alcohol. Corrugated metal, gas pumps, motorcycles, 60's race posters, garage door storefront, lamps made out of motorcycle parts, a long history, and real people make this place unique. It just fits, like a well-worn leather jacket. It is not a haven of coffee-snobbery, but the lattes will stand up to all but the most coffee-centric shops around. It beats the hell out of the major coffee chains (literally)! This could be become your new (old) local hangout. read more

ok, keep in mind im reviewing thse places in terms of me trying to read dense cerebral books that make me ill, not just where id want to hang out. that is what this coffee shop is for, hanging out. i loved that the glass window wall was up, a great breeze, but the three tattoed hungover nasty guys next to me were practically yelling. that, combined with loner types that talk to the coffee woman as if she is a surragate gfriend, while amusing,do not make the best reading scene. only one toilet, which is becoming the norm, so maybe its me having toilet neurosis issues more than these cafes not having ample bathroom numbers, am still figuring it out. would definitely come back to meet a friend and chat but for at least a little quiet, will skip it. read more

Whoever he is, Bob makes a pretty good cup of coffee. To reiterate the sentiments of my fellow reviewers, the atmosphere is really what cements Bob's place as one of the better shops in town. The staff is nonchalant and everyone from bikers to businesspeople to dogs coexists comfortably even when it's packed - which is just about anytime it's nice outside. Perhaps best of all, the front of the shop opens up to let in tons of natural light (vitamin D - necessary after six months of winter) and fresh air. The cookies are par, too. I've noticed on several occasions that the staff tends to play music abnormally loud and their are hogs constantly roaring in and out of the vicinity, so I wouldn't necessarily designate this spot homework-friendly. read more

How can you hate a place that has a garage door to welcome in the riff-raff? I have to admit: I don't drink coffee, but I frequent coffee shops. I love Bob's decor: bold and nostalgic of a time 40 years before I was born. They have throwback sodas in glass bottles and tasty chocolate chip cookies that keep me nourished through my work session. Wifi is as fast as the cafe racers. If you're a creative personality, frequent Bob's for some great vintage typography inspiration with a modern attitude. read more

I don't come here as often as I should, because Bob's is that place you could sit at on your computer for days. The atmosphere is sometimes ruffled, but I think that's what makes this place cool to be at. They have a pretty decent menu, not too different from any other coffee shop, but its the people, and the time spent here that makes it really unique. I haven't been there yet to try any of their fancier drinks, like the Chai Latte, which I hear is great, but their coffee is good, hot, and caffeinated. That's all I need! read more

I am always on the search for a fun coffee spot so I decided to check out Bob's Java Hut. I love the open garage door and outdoor seating; it really opened up the place and allowed us to enjoy the nice weather. The decor is really cool too and feels very welcoming and warm. I ordered an iced americano and the prices were very reasonable. The baristas were very friendly and chatty. My friend and I ended up sitting outside for a few hours and my only complaint would be that a lot of people outside were smoking cigarettes and cigars for almost the whole time we were out there (~3 hours). After a while I had to leave because the constant smell and smoke was giving me a headache. I love the spot but probably wouldn't go back if I just want to read my book or have a calm/chill time. read more

The shop has a very nice real feeling to it rather than the corporate/generic ikea purchased setups with artifical staff, no, the staff here are the real deal with quirky personalities. The coffee itself is phenomenal. You practically get a head rush from all of the aromatics in the coffee. Its strong and delicious. The coffee is about on par with Hard Times Cafe which is a hard thing to do. Why 4.5 and not 5? It is a bit on the expensive side for what you get. Otherwise, its awesome. read more

I love this place! Minus the fact that my tattoo shop and salon are located in the same building, it is still the place I would go for a cup of joe! The workers are always so friendly and helpful. I also enjoy sitting outside to read a book or do some homework in their convenient outdoor seating area. No one ever makes you feel like you should leave because you are finished with your coffee and the crowd that hangs out there is fun as well. I love Bob's.... consistently good, drip coffee. Wonderful space - wood floors, tall ceilings, great decorations and colors...lots and lots of light... no, one "in" crowd at Bob's, either - very welcoming whether you're a biker, a student, a laptop worker, elderly, martian, shapeshifter, doesn't matter.... friendly staff, good music.... have been coming to Bob's Java Hut on a monthly basis (more or less) for 18 years, usually to read, write, do my own office work (sorry that i'm one of those office-space renters sometimes) and mostly just to procrastinate and unwind. Bob's Java Hut is open when I get up and when I go to sleep and I think it only closes on Christmas and Thanksgiving. There were days that I spent the whole day because I needed a space where no one would bother me and I could get my work done. This is probably why I don't go to a library. I can refuel with coffee, step outside for a break and go right back to whatever it is I am working on. Something about this place, with it's hard wooden chairs, safety lights hanging overhead, just allows for me to get focused and creative and I honestly feel that the diverse nature just flowing in this place. If you remember what the Uptown McDonald's used to mean to the neighborhood in the 1980s, well, Bob's is a place where I hear people talk about coming to just because they feel good coming here. There are GO games, AA sponsorship meetings, artists and writers that come here for inspiration, and the coffee, well, to be honest, it's kind of an afterthought. It's not the best or worst coffee, but people have a relationship with the business and are very loyal. Those who haven't been here before walk in and wonder what the fuss is all about when they see this once was a garage and the floors are unfinished and there is a solitary bathroom for patrons to use. Bob attracts bikers, tattoo artists, the young set, the old and retired set, the yuppies, and the puppies. No one is turned away for a dress code. They have stayed in business because there is heart here. They don't have to be perfect, but they don't abuse their customers and make you feel right at home. read more

Bob's Java Hut is about 6 or so blocks from my apartment, and I can't believe that I haven't visited before today. It may seem a little intimidating from the outside, with a mixed crowd of bikers and hipsters sitting outside smoking their American Spirits, with a few homeless folks amongst the bunch, but the coffee is great, with a large selection of drinks, even though I stuck with the dark roast for the day. Not a huge selection of food, but they have wraps and sandwiches from Caffrey's deli, which is located down the street. The music is somewhat loud, but not obnoxious, and they have free wi-fi, which is good when I'm trying to get homework done, but actually just facebooking and catching up on my favorite blogs. Dogs are allowed inside, and the staff is friendly. In the summer, they roll up the garage door of windows, and the shop is almost entirely open air. Bob's is extremely laptop friendly, with a counter up against the windows, and also a bar in the back, with plenty of outlets. Located across from Sunny Side, and just down the street from French Meadow, I'll definitely be visiting Bob's again. read more

Nice local coffee shop. Relaxed, friendly atmosphere, free wifi, sunny, and the middle-aged bikers are entertaining. Baristas are not always the most friendly, it can get a little hot sometimes, and every once in a while there's terrible techno. Still, one of my favorite Minneapolis coffee shops. read more
