As someone not remotely affiliated with biker culture, I harbored something close to fear and intimidation about the old, pre-remodel Bob's. It seemed like a welcoming enough place for people in that subculture, Masons, or people with cute dogs. And from what I had heard, the remodel was designed to widen the appeal to cool moms & millennial dog-gawkers in athleisure. Neither the before nor after ambiance appealed to me a lot -- there are plenty of other coffee shops with less second-hand smoke that appeal to the young and trendy in the area. But, I decided to give it a try anyway. And I'm glad I did. So far, I've had tasty iced tea, and a pourover, and have tried a solid latte. I've also heard great things about the regular drip coffee and patisserie 46 (I think?) pastries. Everything seems moderately priced and high quality. The interior space has many types of seating areas, many of which seem well-suited for working. As I expected, service has not been exceedingly friendly, but the crowd does seem friendly and respectful. It's not the quietest shop, especially on the weekends and when the garage-like windows are open, and the smoke thing is still an issue, but those are my only "complaints." I'm writing this from Bob's because I really love it that much. If someone in the metro area asks me what my favorite place is for coffee, I always quickly reply with "Bob's Java Hut - no question." Tip: If you check in on Yelp, and show it to the barista, you get a free sticker! Very cool Yelp deal. I'm devoted to the Mexican mocha. Not too choclatey, not too coffee-ish, but with plenty of delicious spices (maybe cayenne? Red pepper?) to kick it up a notch. Culinary schools teach us that pairing chocolate with spice brings out the sweetness of the cocoa, and this drink is delicious proof of that idea. This morning, I had a peanut butter cookie, too, which was large and moist. KIT HATES DRY COOKIES. The atmosphere here is pretty cool - a really diverse crowd. As many have said, Bob's is heavily frequented by bikers, but it's definitely not something to be afraid of. The crowd here is friendly, very open-minded, and will likely hold the door open for you if you're nearby. Strong, free Wi-Fi, and although outlets are a bit sparse, they're still easily found. I've yet to have a surly barista here - they are all exceptionally friendly. Love the industrial feel here - the large garage doors that open in the front of the shop are really spectacular in the spring, but also nice in the winter for the view and natural light. Had I read the reviews, I probably would have gone elsewhere. I don't hate Bob's, it's just not my jam. I go to coffee shops with a book in hand. I'm looking for a quiet-ish place to enjoy my coffee, book and to not be bothered. Bob's is not this place... What Bob's is though, is a biker coffee bar. Motorcycles outside, motorcycle stuff inside, bikers everywhere. The windows open to the outside were fantastic, with the exception of the exhaust noise every few minutes. I got a phone call and had to leave shortly after I got there and I was fine to head out so soon. I did enjoy the coconut cookie, though! When I moved into my neighborhood, one of the biggest draws was getting to be close to Bob's. It's a true neighborhood hangout with a real Minneapolis feel. The best part about this place, is that it's friendly. You can go sit outside at a picnic table, and people will fill in around you. It doesn't have that awkward feel of cafeteria dining, where you never look up and meet eyes with anyone, though. People talk to each other, compare notes on books, have conversations and comment on the action of Lyndale. Employees from the nearby businesses (a tattoo place and a hair salon) are regulars. Everyone is reading something. It makes you feel like part of a community. It's a "biker" coffee shop, too. Most of the bikers that hang out there are in their 30s, and can be pretty friendly. They stay on the picnic tables outside more often than not, and chat amongst themselves smoking cigarettes and hanging out. Every once and awhile, they'll be assholes and encroach on your space if you're outside... nothing to be done about that. It's really my only complaint, as it has made me feel unwelcome. When you sit inside in the summer, they open the garage door windows and so you can have the shade of an indoor seat with the breeze of an outdoor one! That's the best. While the food is mostly gas station fare (save the tasty tasty muffins), the coffee is unbelievable. Cold press that could keep you up for DAYS. DAYS. I would trust them to make any coffee drink for me, and they even have perfectly balanced (not too sweet) Italian sodas! They only take cards if you spend $5 or more, and for my cash forgetting self, that can be annoying. But in the end, they play music I like, have a great atmosphere, and the staff is nice. As a barista myself finding good drinks can be hard but at Bob's Java Hut I was very impressed. I got an 'oil change' which is a dirty chai, there was 2 shots of espresso in it and was very yummy. The espresso was very rich and full of caffeine. I would definitely recommend! read more

First of all, I should note that this review is completely biased. I've fallen in love so hard with this place after going there for four years, that they could probably spill scalding hot coffee all over me and I would STILL give it five stars. It's also in my neighborhood so it's inordinately convenient for me But why! Why else do I love it so much? Let me count the ways. (And let me count them in bullet point form since I'm too lazy in those moment to compose paragraphs that make sense). - It's colorful and charming, but feels authentic, real and imperfect. - There are always adorable pups coming in all eager to be scratched and fawned over, since they are a dog-friendly establishment. - It's independently owned, so you can feel good about supporting local business owners instead of the evil warlords of Starbucks. I kid! - It's easy to sit down and work for hours on end. Good WiFi. Really solid jams. My husband and I will come here and work independently for hours; him programming on his laptop while I write or read some Donna Tartt. - Their coffee drinks are solid. I love their Cafe Miel in the winter, and their assortment of iced teas in the summer, which leads me to... - The opening garage door in the summer is my favorite thing...sitting at the bar and looking out at Lyndale is soothing and interesting and relaxing all at once. So you see? It's really a curious, creative and quirky space for those who love good coffee, good people watching and good music. read more

I have no shortage of coffee places nearby. Easily four within walking distance, and all four of them are pretty good. Bob's is probably my favorite, and it's not even the closest. Prices seem to be about as reasonable as coffee shop prices tend to be, service is good and they're dog friendly. I also really dig the decor. I can't give you much of a reason to choose this place over the other strong options. They're cheaper than Muddy Waters, and less dickish than Spyhouse, but really it mostly comes down to personal preference. read more

I am the last person you should rely on for a good review of a coffee house. I don't ask much from a coffee house. All I need is a good skim latte and free wifi. Well, Bob's has both. The fact that it is biker themed and all of the parking is dedicated to motorcycles? Awesome. I ride a motorcycle, and always saw a few bikes parked out front but never stopped in. Well, I was out for a ride to nowhere, and decided to stop in for a quick cup. I ended up staying for a few hours. The atmosphere is great, and the bikes that show up are interesting to look at. It doesn't matter what you ride. Harley, crotch rocket, moped, they all come. If it is on two wheels, it stops by. And everyone is pretty nice. My only gripe is the lack of early morning hours. This would be a great stop prior to an early morning ride. read more

Ok this place looks cool and has the attitude of coolness you expect from a coffee shop for bikers (Harley type) and a tattoo parlor upstairs. But why didn't the coffee have the attitude as well. Living in the suburban, cultural void that is Las Vegas, I have come to greatly appreciate the urban coffee houses that other cities have to offer. The idea that I can consume a coffee drink while pretending to be important and pounding out my most intimate thoughts (read: Facebook status updates) on my laptop amongst other educated and cultured patrons is an experience to be celebrated and savored. The fact that the establishment is not located in a strip mall or named in a manner that rhymes with "Car Ducks" is an added bonus. Bob's Java Hut offers all of this plus a mismatch of shabby furniture, a fun barista who enjoys dropping the F-bomb in a refined, humorous manner, and reasonable prices. I don't have an opinion of the coffee because the weather was stuck on "New Orleans" mode today, so I opted for an iced tea. Parking is a little bit of a challenge, but I found an open (and free) street spot at the corner of 26th and Garfield. My only complaint was that the WiFi was a little slow and it ended up being more effective to tether to my phone. If I feel the need to pretend to be a part of the intellectual elite while hiding behind my MacBook on my next visit to Minneapolis, I will put Bob's on the agenda. read more

American-sized espresso drinks. As soon as you walk into Bob's, you'll realize something. This is as down-to-earth, non-pretentious as a coffee shop comes. The patrons are normally from the neighbourhood, taking their coffee to go or sitting to people watch, meet up, or read the newspapers. What's atypical here is the biker theme and the dogs. My favourite is this black lab named "blackjack" jack for short. People are so accustom to him that he just walks up to you and puts his head down on your lap and sleeps. So you can do work here, with the wifi they offer, but you can also find yourself taking the time to not do work, just for a bit. As for the coffee and espresso drinks, they are mostly american sized. 12 16, 20 oz. It's decent stuff. Smooth and has a kick. The tattooed staff is friendly and always up for convo. Every time I stop in here I think about how I don't come here often enough. That's probably a good sign. I'm partial to coffee/dining/bar establishments with garage doors. Even though Lyndale is speckled with them now, I think this was the first. The walls are decked out with kitsch and there's great people/biker-watching. I don't remember the coffee being very interesting, but not bad either. It's also a good meeting place for bidness. So I highly enjoy the atmosphere here, which is more than I can say for my "horchada" drink that I ordered the other day. I love horchata, but this was gross. I thought "horchada" was just a misspelling of "horchata," but it's not. Or maybe it's supposed to be. But it can't. Nope. No. Whatever it is, in the words of John Oates and Daryl Hall, "I can't go for that." One failing does not make a failure though, and I've still got love for Bob's. read more

I'll admit it: I always avoided going to Bob's Java Hut because it intimidated me. Bob's Java Hut is a biker cafe and in the summer the whole place is oft-packed with Harleys and Ducatis, Kawasakis and Victories; the patio tables occupied by large tattooed men in leather jackets. However much I may have wanted to check out this neighborhood coffee shop, I dreaded the hungry eyes following the little blonde girl through the crowd of biker men (who surely had more of a right to be there than I) and into the coffee shop. Thus, Bob's Java Hut remained untouchable to me. Until today. Perhaps it was the weight-lifting class I had taken earlier in the morning that boosted my confidence, but I finally decided that it wasn't worth it to live in fear of a coffee shop anymore; today, Bob's Java Hut would be mine. And that's where the excitement ends. Everyone who has been to Bob's knows that it's not at all intimidating, and is in fact filled with a diverse crowd of people and the drinks are just normal coffee, not some sort of engine oil/coffee concoction. The mystery is over, and another space in my neighborhood has been opened up to me. My stomach didn't feel great when I stopped in, so I begrudgingly passed on the coffee in favor of a chai. I've been told that the coffee at Bob's isn't that great, so I may have been subconsciously trying to avoid disappointment. The counter cases were full of amazing looking treats that I was terribly tempted by, but I only had enough cash for the drink and stuck to my cash-only-at-coffee-shops guns. The chai was mediocre at best, but I never expect a good chai because I find that very few places actually do them well. It mostly just tasted sweet, and lacked pretty much any spice. However, it was warm and creamy, and I really didn't expect much more than that. The cafe itself is a strange world. First of all, they let dogs in, which I'm pretty sure is illegal (however, I have no problem with it, and actually enjoy seeing the pups). They have a huge television which was playing the Sunday football game, not something you expect to see in a coffee shop (however, the sound was off, so it wasn't terribly distracting). Lastly, the crowd was about 98% men, and not solely the men that I generally see in coffee shops, but old men and bearded men, biker men and hipster men, men with young daughters and men watching the football game. Also, this was the only cafe I've been to where people regularly step outside to smoke cigarettes. It is truly a unique place. The only other thing worth mentioning is that the music selection was top-notch: Tegan & Sara, Dresden Dolls, Caroline Smith...thank you barista girl, for the musical love fest. read more

It's pretty much the best summertime-outdoor coffee house I've been to in a long, long time. Plenty of outdoor seating is the key here, and when you have friends who enjoy coffee AND ciggarettes this is key. The coffee was all fair-trade, and there was a decent amount of snack and other drink options. The decor is a retro motorcycle/street sign look. It's almost as if "Bob" wanted a biker bar, then his AA group conviced him otherwise. Good work, group and thank you for sharing, Bob. read more

I was a little hesitant based on the exterior- thought I might be walking in to a 60s space machine- but you know what they say, don't judge a book by its cover. I'm glad I didn't! Bob's is a great local coffee house. The staff is really nice and friendly, and the few times that I have been there, it seems that the other patrons are great to be around as well. So Bob's Java Hut...a place I now give ONE HALF STAR lost all the ambiance, they close early, cutting off alot of the crowd that would come after recovery meetings, and buy and hang out. They dont take cash only credit cards. its + $ 7 for a 20 oz carmel mocha breve,( $ 2 of that is for the cream) with " home made additives" like carmel which has no flavor. BOBS has just lost all that made it good, the good employees get fired or worked to death.. The employees make the environment and everytime there is a good team the mgmt screws it up.. I cant comment on their page because they limit what we can complain about, and allows no posts, so all the positives you see are from folks like Andy and the like they made it successful.. They were accurate, but Andy no longer works there, so the photos and updates were great but there are few good things left, the reviews pre 2019 are what it WAS mgmt now tries to make up for their loses since remodeling by selling over priced coffee cups, hats, waterbottles, quart glass jugs with logos pins and patches but is a bit steep in price and late to that game. I have been a regular since it was across the street and until the remodeling and covid it was really going good.. doing ok, but since the remodeling, There is nothing there any more to keep most of even the most devout coming back.. the environment is gone, the ambiance? What ambiance with out the baristas that bring it? The short opening schedule and the menu which is shrunk includes no food per se and is more expensive, this is my own feelings and opinions, and yes I call it like I see it.. so im gonna make some angry,oh well...its in need of a rework or it might not stay, and winter is coming... read more

People on bikes do show up here. It's cool. It is a breezy interior as all the windows are usually open, so you might want to bring your jacket. I suspect the feeling is that sitting in here is a bit like being on a motorcycle. I definitely noted the similarity to a bike without a windscreen. This place is great if you need to get work done and the Internet to do it... They have both b and g wifi - I don't really know what that means except that it can split the number of users between the two making the internet fast and if you have an old school computer you can still connect. The only downside is that you need to spend at least $5 to use your credit card otherwise there is an ATM in the place, but as with most banks there is a fee associated with that... So either bring cash or plan on ordering a 20oz of something or food. I only had a latte and a scone but both were great.. no complaints from me! read more

For a "menacing" biker coffee shop, it sure is colourful, offbeat, and charming! Felt like I was off in Barcelona or somewhere in Mexico instead. Very pleasant, clean, and positive atmosphere. I'm glad it wasn't divey or edgy. The soy chai latte I ordered was sweet and satisfying. There might have been honey or caramel in it. Most other coffee houses make bland chai drinks, but Bob's got it right. Meanwhile, the barista was surprisingly very receptive and kind. Most of the patrons there appeared to be regulars and/or locals who've grown up in Minneapolis. They sounded so "Minnesotan"! This is a review taking into consideration what Bob's IS: an authentic local neighborhood coffee shop with strong coffee, unique biker-ish vibes, plenty of tables, lots of light and open air in the summer, cute dogs, mix of oldie/contemporary/90s jams to keep your morale up, great location near other stuff but not too crazy busy, nice enough staff. And ignoring what it is NOT: a place to have brunch and feel cutting-edge hipster, have complete silence to conduct important business and phone calls etc. Bob's gets 5 stars because it is GREAT at certain things and really stands out as a unique coffee shop offering in the Uptown-ish area.
