This is a five star coffee shop with fresh baked goods and sandwiches and salads, they roast their own coffee, and have comfy tables and chairs and a carpeted and toy filled play room for kids. It's the neighborhood favorite Excellent coffee! read more

Stopped in on the way to a round of golf and was pleasantly surprised. The coffee was excellent--you can really tell it's freshly roasted and the egg muffin was a great breakfast before heading out. The staff was friendly and provided great customer service, making for an all-around enjoyable stop. I'd definitely recommend this coffee shop if you're in the area and looking for a quality cup of coffee and a quick bite. I'll be back next time I'm nearby! read more

A wonderfully quaint coffee shop. This place has a really cool and welcoming vibe. I would totally hang out here if I lived in S. MPLS. The coffee drinks are so well made. Just enough of the sweetness to offer a hint of the flavor, while maintaining the essence of the coffee They have a great array of treats, and some lunch items. If you are on the south side, I highly recommend stopping in. read more

This is a great place to hang out if you have kids or friends with kids! They have a nice play area with lots of options for your young ones. We met our friend with her child and we were all totally content to be there for a couple of hours. The coffee options are great and the baked goods are made fresh. I had the apple strudel cake which was delicious. I wanted there to be more options of savory things or breakfast items aside from pastries and quiche, but overall, it's a nice place to hang out. The service is friendly and warm as well. read more

A cozy and welcoming spot with fun seating and decor. It definitely has a friendly neighborhood feel, lots of people seemed to know each other while I was there. Staff were incredibly friendly! I tried the Snickerdoodle Latte, which was just okay, but the turkey sandwich was very good! I stopped in for an offsite meeting and was able to find a table for our group of four but it did get pretty busy from 11-1pm with not many seats available. There aren't many outlets, so keep that in mind in case you need a charge. read more

What a hidden gem in south Minneapolis. All the baked good are made on site and the coffee is roasted here as well. The personal touch here does not go unnoticed, I had one of the most amazing cinnamon rolls I've had in a while. We came mid morning on a Saturday, so it was pretty busy, however, our group was able to snag a table. read more

Sovereign Grounds is a cozy neighborhood spot! I ordered a gingerbread latte (they have a long list of flavor options), which was decent, but the real standout was the spinach pie. Delicious! Barista was friendly and helpful, too. There is a kids area as well, which could be a draw for families. read more

Coffee was OK? Not flawed, but unremarkable. The baked goods are good, food seems nice, but I haven't tried any of that. Definitely a local spot/nice place to work. Staff seems fine, and nice enough. Are you going to feel bad about going here, hopefully not? Will it be one of your preferred spots in the area, if you're not in walking distance, probably not? read more

Ambiance is so fun! Definitely a neighborhood gathering space! They have a whole room in the back where kids can play! The coffee and bakery is fantastic! read more

Amazing area for the kiddos and lovely tea/lemonade :) definitely try the pastries too!!

Drinks are not fantastic, pretty sweet and only a couple housemade syrups. However, the food is absolutely incredible--mostly the baked goods. Great service too read more

A friend of mine lives in the neighborhood and swears by Sovereign Grounds, so I checked it out a couple of times recently. Very pleasant environment, I could easily hang out here for long periods of time. The staff have been really nice as well. My hard-to-please friend got the Turkish lentil soup and a Turkish coffee and was content enough with them. The staff includes individuals from Türkiye, we confirmed, so I feel like they're serving up the real deal. They have a nice, loaded play area for kids which is a distinguishing touch you might appreciate. I had a decent brownie that was nicely voluminous, and my coffees have been good enough that I'll return for sure. read more

Adorable neighborhood cafe with ample seating indoors and outdoors to enjoy a lazy south Minneapolis summer afternoon or cozy winter day. Surprisingly broad array of food offerings - including sandwiches, pastries, and spinach pies. Friendly staff and lots of nearby street parking. read more

Very bustling because they have a section for children to play but it's a contained chaos. The workers are so kind though and make you feel very cared for and have delicious treats! (I recommend the mixed berry rhubarb bars read more

There's really nothing wrong with Sovereign Ground, especially if you have kids (there's a playroom), it's just not the coffee shop for me. Upon entering it felt like a cafe I loved in college, with mismatched antique furniture, lots of students and work-from-homers on laptops, and yummy sandwiches and beverages... but then you hear a kid in the other room around the corner losing their minds and that spell is broken. If that doesn't bother you -- great -- Sovereign Coffee is definitely worth a stop, it's just not what I'm looking for. read more

I'd say this is a FABULOUS place to go with young kids but not as good of place to take work calls or do focused work. There is a room to the side with a bunch of toys, including a play kitchen, which was popular with my friend's almost 3 year old. I was there midweek around 10am and it was pretty hoppin'! I ordered an iced coffee and a scrumptious egg and spinach pie thing. I comfortably nursed baby while hanging here without anyone batting an eye, which is a very nice perk of going to a kid-friendly coffee shop. Will for sure be back. read more

I've been creeping on Sovereign Grounds for quite some time now, but because it's a bit of a drive for us we haven't made it. Today was the day and I'm so glad! I went specifically for the kid play area and let me tell you--kids EVERYWHERE. If you want a quiet place to study in the later hours of the morning this may not be the place for you. I started with a plain coffee which was extremely tasty and reasonably priced. My daughter loved the play area! We split a quiche as well (why do I never remember pictures of the food? Working on it!) which was a huge hit. We will continue to go out of our way to come here for coffee and play. read more

I dropped by recently and was pleased to find it was just as good as I remember from pre-pandemic days. I grabbed the last big table on a Saturday morning. I love the cozy living room feel with well-worn furniture. The service is attentive, and the man who appears to be the owner really cares about what he does. I keep coming back for the fresh deli food. This time I ordered tabbouleh and an low-carb egg sausage cheese cup. Both were delicious and went well with my mint tea. I love family businesses that make you feel like you are visiting a friend's house. My friends who met me there for the first time also seemed to enjoy the space. We will be back. read more

We stopped in for coffee to warm up after taking a neighborhood walking tour on a chilly fall afternoon. This is a cozy independent neighborhood coffee shop, the kind of place I know I would be spending a lot of time in if I lived on this side of town. There are big old tables where you can sip your coffee while you check out the Sunday newspaper or just relax. Most importantly, the coffee was great. read more

Stopped in to work on some things and unfortunately it was quite busy inside so I had to take my coffee to go. I could tell it was a really vibrant place though and the atmosphere was very comfortable. Seems like a very awesome neighborhood spot with another room for kids to come play in, and although the playroom was open the noise level in the main coffee shop seemed perfect too. Street parking with what looked like one parking spot in a lot out front, but I didn't have to walk too far to get inside. I ordered a cappuccino and it was alright. Would love to come back and give this place another chance though! read more

Loved everything about this place! The owners were so wonderful. Attentive (brought small plates to our table to share pastries and also cleared away dirty plates as we were finished), informative (happy to answer our many questions about the amazing food choices), and a GREAT playroom area for the kids! We were there as our final hoorah before dropping family off at the airport and it accommodated our 9 adults and 8 kids wonderfully! Everything was delicious! If I was local, this would be my spot! read more

This place is so unique and utterly fantastic if you have young kids! They have an entire space dedicated for an indoor playground, including toy kitchens, a little jungle gym, train table, and lots of cars/puzzles/smaller toys. We visit a lot in the winter months and it's such a lifesaver for our toddlers! I'm not a big fan of their coffee, but my husband likes it so could just be a personal preference. They also have lots of baked goods / sandwiches which is nice. read more

Food was amazing. Hats off to the cook. The service was awful. I walked in with my Latine family and they "didn't see us". We were 4 people, asked to step aside for two white people to give/receive their orders before we did. If I hadn't been so hungry, I would have left. Good thing I stuck around because the food was excellent. However, I'm never coming back. Not a safe place for POC. There were tables for four/five people occupied by one person. We had to fit 4 people on a window table for two. Service didn't chime in to help us find a spot that fit us all. read more

This is one of my go to coffeeshop for meeting friends with kids because they have a nice selection of drinks/food/baked goods and snacks for the kiddos plus a nice size play room for the kiddos to explore and run around. This place does get fill up fast on bad weather days and the nice can bring loud from the playroom but the separate dining area to work with a view. They have a nice selection of toys for the kids to keep busy and the playroom has recently been repainted with a different murals. They have separate bathroom in the back of the playroom with a changing table and hooks for jackets and other stuff. Remember to wash your kiddos hands before and after playing in the playroom to prevent your kiddos from getting sick. read more

This is one of the most delightful neighborhood coffee shops the cities offers. The best price for coffee I've found as well as delightful rotating baked good items. It's not swanky like some other shops, but it's cozy and quite, perfect to get some work done (that's why so many people often have laptops) or chill and read a book for while. It's in a great area for a walk with a coffee. If you're seeking a chill spot, with good coffee; this is a must visit. read more

What a neat little place! The owner is very kind and makes amazing pastries and good coffee. What makes this place unique is the children's play area inside! I was able to meet a friend for coffee and our kids played while we caught up! Her daughter is two and my son is 5 and they both had fun. Food and drinks are reasonably priced (around $3 each). I would highly recommend this spot to moms with kids! I will be coming back! Note: Parking is only along the street and can be tricky. read more

Great coffee and wonderful atmosphere. Also, a good place to bring your kids while you enjoy coffee with a friend.

This was a nice little coffee shop with a friendly worker and great coffee. My grandpa goes here often and recommend it to me so I decided to try it out. Good coffee, great food homemade, lots of laptops , lots of children screaming in adjacent playroom. The food for lunch and pastry is superior to just about anyplace I've been to. The proprietors are so warm, so friendly, so authentic, that they are part of the experience. read more

I've been thoroughly enjoying visiting Sovereign Grounds. I've visited to chat with friends, as well as settled in to get work done. It has the best cozy coffee shop vibe! The coffee is delicious, as well as the baked goods I've tried. I recommend the mocha, it's my favorite one I've found in the cities. The employees are all very kind and the service is fast! Some people have mentioned noise from the playroom being distracting, but I find it quite mild, especially when I use headphones it becomes pretty much unnoticeable. read more

This place gets four stars for the play room available for kids. It is a great option for adults who want to catch up with friends and they don't have to worry about finding a babysitter or a fun outing for the kids if its bad weather outside. If you don't like kids and noise, I would not recommend this place on the weekends at least. I got a chai latte, it is comparative to most other coffee shops. They offer a standard menu of coffee/tea/food items. I also got a slice of their blackberry oatmeal walnut bread. The slice they gave me was huge! I actually took a lot of it home to enjoy with my dinner. They also offer gluten free options at the bakery. The service is a little slow but to be fair, there was only one person at the counter and having 3-5 people come in at a time with their food/drink orders is a lot for one person to handle. Street parking available and easy to find in the neighborhood especially. read more

This cafe is a cute little gem. It's got an eclectic and comfy vibe, with several options of both drink and food. They offer all the standard caffeinated creations of both the hot and cold varieties. I love that they have a long list of flavored syrups you can add, like lavender, amaretto, peppermint, and cherry to name a few. They even have some sugar-free syrups. They have a deli menu too with the usual cafe fair like soup, salad, and sammies. But their case also has lots of other treats on rotation, like gluten free quiche, roasted brussel sprouts, lemon poppyseed muffins, cinnamon rolls, and pasta salad. The water and bussing bin is by the back of the counter. The service was friendly, yet a bit slow. And unfortunatley the wifi barely works. read more

The ambience inside was perfect - a quaint coffee shop with all the smells, sounds, and bustling of energy you could hope for. My 3 year old loved the play area, which was overrun with small children on a Saturday morning. We got a hot chocolate (prices were very reasonable) and pastries. The lemon bar was great. I think I had a slightly overcooked batch of scones, but it tasted fine and I won't pass judgment because the owners clearly care about the quality of their food and service. I would definitely come here again! read more

This is one of my favorite small businesses in the Twin Cities. Before the pandemic it was a neighborhood hot spot - indoor playground tables full of people chatting and enjoying coffee and treats. I drive 15 miles from Apple Valley to come here. Why? - The owner is one of the nicest people I know. He is genuinely kind. He takes the time to know his customers, keeps my order in mind. - Personally I think they make the best scones in the Twin Cities. I like my scones a bit crunchy, not too sweet, no doughy, and that's exactly what you find here. - Really good coffee. The Turkish Roast is a family favorite. Great roast that's dark on flavorful but not overbearing. During the pandemic they're open but only serving takeout. I'm making an effort to try to frequent the store as much as possible. If you have a small business you care about, now is the time to show them some love. read more
