Volunteered at FABSCRAP in Bay Ridge and had such a great experience. They work with companies to…read morekeep fabric scraps out of landfills, sorting through about 6,000 pounds a week, which is pretty amazing. The shift was about 3 hours, the staff was super friendly, and the music made it really fun. You also get to take home up to 5 pounds of fabric after, which is such a cool perk if you're into anything crafty. Highly recommend checking this out if you're looking for a unique and meaningful volunteer opportunity!

You sort items into various categories according to their easy to follow charted system. I went with a friend and we worked alongside a few other volunteers. We used scissors to remove labels, zippers, buttons etc. It was interesting to see all the fabrics, sample clothing, trimmings etc. The staff is very welcoming and provide all the instructions. They are available throughout the shift to address any questions you have. At the end of the 3 hour shift you get yo take home 5 pounds of fabric of your choosing (free) . They have a shopping room that you can buy additional materials and trimmings too at 30% discount . The prices are way below traditional fabric shops. If you're a sew/craft lover you will be happy in the shopping room. If you're looking for a place to volunteer that offers a different experience then try a shift here. The shifts offered are 9am to 12pm and 1pm to 4pm. It's located in the Brooklyn Army Terminal. It's a warehouse type atmosphere but downstairs you can find food and coffee etc so don't think it's a desolate area. I look forward to doing some more shifts here.

Fort Hamilton, Bay Ridge

I recently dropped into this store looking for fabric to cover my RV cushions. I had visited…read morenumerous places and could not find anything that pleased me. Much to my surprise as this is not a large store, I found lovely fabric and some of it was outdoor quality. I brought two different materials that complemented each other. I had a total of 10 cushions covered (one was 75" by 34") and 4 small pillow covers made. I was very pleased with the quality and service! If I need fabric this shop will be my first stop!

Ok here was my experience;…read more So I randomly found this store because I needed some cotton-spandex fabric for a project of mine. Parking for the shop is rough even when I was there at 10:30am so you'll probably have to park far or you can take mass transit so you won't have to worry about parking. As I entered the compact store it was luckily empty (I hate crowded stores). I wasn't greeted or anything which was odd but, I found Angel near the back end corner of the store too busy with something else and didn't pay me any mind. I doubt he even knew I was there until I asked him where cotton-spandex fabric would be. So the customer service was lacking. A great thing was there was A LOT of fabric to choose from, but I do wish he would take some time to label and organize the fabrics. It will not only be easier to look for certain fabrics but will look a lot more cleaner and professional! The prices were so/so and I ended up finding a thicker black wool-spandex fabric for 15 bucks a yard because I couldn't find what I wanted, 2 spools of black thread, and 2 zippers. In the end, I would say I'll go back because of a good and diverse selection but a little organization goes a long way! I'm sure next time I'll find some great fabrics.
