I only come here to buy fabrics that I would have no regret scrapping in the case that my project goes south and for that, this place serves its purpose well. They don't have high-quality or elaborate materials that you'd have to go to the Garment District for, but all of the stuff here should suffice to experiment with and make prototypes. Most of their fabrics are not labeled with what materials they are made of which makes shopping a bit more difficult and time-consuming. You will have to go to each bolt and get a feel of the fabric. Prices start from literally $1 and most fabrics seem to be under $10/yard. They also have a selection of trimmings and ribbons. On the ground floor, they have a section for knitting, painting, as well as other random house decor items (fake flowers, wedding favors, dollies, wooden letters, blank t-shirts, etc). On the basement floor is where the baking and cake decorating items are at as well as more miscellaneous house furnishings. Customer service here could be better, but for the affordable prices, I'll suck it up. read more

A great hobby store. The basement alone has rows and rows of yarn. They also offer classes on knitting and crochet. They also have sewing and baking classes. Other things you may find of interest are the many fabrics and thread that they have as well as craft materials (beads, feathers, clay, and a whole lot of other stuff that I can't think of right now). If you're not careful, you may spend quite a lot of money here. read more

I think I got lucky and actually had a nice experience. My mom wanted to go check out their fabrics so I didn't even Yelp the store, I just went along with her. I'm glad I didn't have a horrific experience like the other reviews here... We went on a Sunday, right when it opened at 11 am. The store was quiet and not so crowded. The ground floor has a lot of crafts, foam letters, things to do with your kids. The bottom floor has a whole bunch of yarn. I'd say 80% of the yarn is acrylic, 10% is cotton and 10% is entirely wool. I found two skeins for a reasonable price of $3.99 each. The bottom floor also has baking supplies, even a tin shaped like a Barbie which I thought was super cool. The top floor had the fabric. Because the store is in this area of Brooklyn, there's a bigger selection than a store I saw in downtown Brooklyn but we didn't find any fabric we wanted to buy. The brother of the devil. I live close to the other Sav A Thon and have literally spent at least 50k in there (okay, more or less!). The place is so bad it's so good!! Recently I had to go on a hunt for some discontinued yarn (great going, Alicia) and the manager at the one in Flatbush told me to try here. It's much larger and cleaner than the one in Flatbush. The first floor is devoted to sewing machine sales and crafts. There are aisles and aisles of things you maybe don't need. Upstairs is all the fabric you need and want. They don't have the best selection of vintage fabric like the other store, and the $1 a yard bin was nowhere to be found, but there are still good deals to be had. They have a different selection than the Flatbush store, which is good to know. You can defintitley spend a ton in here getting some great stuff. They also have sewing lessons like the other store and it looks like it's not as congested. You can find all the findings you need on this floor as well. Downstairs in the basement is a very organized yarn section. This floor also has a great cake decorating section. Here you will find tons of yarn, from high quality to low and sometimes they bag it up so you can get a ton of skeins for a little price. I ended up finding my yarn and also buying fabric I didn't need! Call first, as they observe most Jewish Holidays. It cost me an hour commute because I didn't think of that! First off this place is very spacious and well put together. Their selections are vast and prices are reasonable. Staff was nonexistent for help but I didnt exactly need any. Went there on 12.26. Very rude staff members. From the manager eating soup on the side and not addressing the needs of the store. And the brother who just said no when my sister asked him to cut fabric. No explanation. Just no. Finally after being asked why like 3 times, he explained that the store only cuts fabric if they can ensure that is a certain amount left after the cut. But then he sends us to the useless manager who states that it can't be done. So my sister picks out another fabric with even less on the roll AND THEY CUT IT..... what the hell? Stumbled upon this place on the way home from kings plaza. When I went downstairs there were shelves of yarn organized by brand in the middle was a counter and next to it was a couple of tables for classes. At the counter there is a sign that showed the classes that they offered. And they offered crochet classes so I went to the crochet class, mind you I know some basics by watching youtube videos but i never really knew how to crochet. So when i went to the class, the teacher was kind, patient and walked me through a stitch that i was having a hard time with. I definitely recommend this place read more

I didn't even know this place existed until I wandered in randomly one day after noticing a sewing machine on sale in the front window. I hadn't previously connected "Save-A-Thon" with anything fabric or sewing-related, but once I entered the place my eyes bugged out. Now I'm hooked. This place is heaven for the homemakers out there. They cover most home crafts and lots of decorative items, but their main forte is fabric and sewing supplies. And BOY do they do it well. If you do any sewing, whether as a hobby or professionally, the entire expanse of their second floor will quite certainly make you drool. China silks galore, all the discounted patterns you could ask for, cheap zippers & fasteners, several varieties of interfacing...it's all there. And CHEAP. The employees aren't the most helpful or knowledgeable bunch I've seen, but even if they can't give you good recommendations, they can help you find what you need. I like save a thon for the the large sized store, filled with all sorts of fun goodies. They have some sewing classes and cake decorating classes and such. A good selection of cheap yarn, and a GREAT selection of fabric, indeed. I could get lost just browsing their fabric. They also sell knitting machines. Very cool store. read more

The nastiest and WORST customer service EVER. I purchased a groupon to take a sewing class at the store. I thought it was going to be a nice experience because I am on winter break. Take into consideration that there is no website, and no way of knowing when the sewing classes take place. I called to see when the classes take place. Stephanie, the person who spoke on the phone told me that the classes take place on Tuesdays. Since it was a monday, I tried to sign up for the class on the next day. She told me I could not. Upon asking her why, she said, "Well, I can't just put you in the next day." Then I said, is there any indication on the groupon saying such? She said, I don't work for groupon, do you want the class, yes or no? I asked to speak with the manager after she told me that I started talking nasty. I just woke up one morning and decided that I needed to learn how to sew. After enduring a couple of overpriced lessons I found Save a Thon. $150 for 6 classes once a week. Cant beat that! Megan rocks! She's very patient with the slower learners and gives them their due time. She manages this w/o holding back those of us with a touch more know how. I haven't had class with any of the other instructors so I can't tell ya bout them. With only about 8 people in each class so you get plenty of attention. 3 weeks in and I'm nearly finished my project. Sign up and you wont be sorry. I cant speak to the actual store. I'm not into the craft crap but it looks like an abundance of yarn and bows and ribbons if that's your thing. read more

The store itself is ok, they really didn't have a big selection from what I needed, but if you are a crafter it seems to have a lot of stuff. I came in the store to buy yarn, it was a little before 6pm. their sign on the door says they are open till 6.45pm so I had over 45 min to look around and see what they got. I went to the basement where knitting department is, there was nobody but old man with his mask on his chin. He never bothered to put it up his nose. I was casually looking around and taking my time since they didn't have shade of yarn I needed so I tried to find something similar. I was there for like 10 mins and this man just standing in the middle of the room sighing. Then I took one yarn to see what shade it was and put it back and hear him saying "Come on pick up something already". I got so confused at first thinking maybe there was somebody else he was talking to but no, it was only me and him. This is extremely rude and unprofessional. Such a shame. I work in sales as well and I know last minute customers could be a bummer but mind me they were not closing the store yet. My mom and I were shopping for fabric, which of course is a matter of personal taste, and after waiting in line for 20 minutes a man comes out and starts yelling ONE ONE who's buying whose paying, and I say we both are, the he starts shouting no one shops alone. (Shouting) It's rude. Plain and simple. They're not giving away anything, as a matter of fact I'm paying them to take their garbage out of the store. Bottom line DONT shop here. If you're looking for different materials and colors of fabric, and for a good price then you should definitely visit here. The cost is around $3-10 for a yard for different materials. I got a burgundy and mint (?) fabric for like $3 a yard each. However I don't think they have floral (well I wasn't able to find it). Last year my daughter was converting a simple red dress into a Harley Quinn costume, and we found EVERYTHING we needed, from fabric paint, felt and pom-poms for the collar, and even materials for building a mini-mallet! Today I just bought 6-yards of plaid for creating a Great Kilt - instead of paying well over $175 for the simplest ones online, I paid less than $12. read more

Not sure where my post went. But here is my review from my visit on May 2. I waited on the line outside the store. I was about 15th in line. No issue with waiting, after we need to follow social distancing. A man came out and asked people what they wanted to purchase and if the floor they needed was within the guidelines he allowed them in. Eventually we all got to wait on the line in the store. I was able to purchase the fabric I needed for all my projects waited on line with the large rolled bolts, had the fabric cut and asked for ribbon. I was told that the ribbon was in the main floor. Went down with my arms full of asterisk, thread, bobbins, buttons, and elastic because there were no baskets and adjed the same man who was standing by the locked door the entire time, where I could find the ribbon. He informed me that they weren't cutting ribbon today because he didnt have any staff spare. At first I thought he was joking and when I asked again he said he couldn't pull anyone away from the register. I asked him when he would be cutting it and he flat out said come back during the week in the morning and someone would be able to cut it. I said I couldn't do that because I work in a hospital and the masks for my colleagues. He looked at me and said you have elastic. I said yes, but for myself I need the ribbon because my ears were raw from the elastic. He walked away and then....proceeded to help a man purchase a sewing machine. Bthectime he doent telling me he couldn't help me, he could have cut the ribbon I needed. So flash forward...they have comfy masks and I'm still using the one with the elastic. A sad that he couldn't help a healthcare worker. Oddly I actually had my ID on me. I probably should have showed it to him. Been in this.store too many times to count. Sad that I'll have to look at the fabric and craft chains instead of the mom and pop ones. It may be worth the drive to long island and jesery. You can do better! read more

The place was large and sOme of the material was priced really well . Management was nice at the Brooklyn location by ave u . There was also a pretty decent selection of fabric. All in all the experience was a good one . If I could add to the experience to make it ultimate I'd have a section of more accessible utilities. Ones of different brands. For example, instead of 2 or 3 cheap brands of sewing strIng and one good one , you could have 3 high end specialty seeing strings And then 3 generic brands. The same equal distribution between generic and specialty for other accessories, such as scissors, router cutters, and odds and ends of object that aren't as common. I do however love the free sewing classes idea and hope to see supplementary literature to go along with it, Such as how-to books in order to take those classes a step further Doing this would distinguish you from being simply a large sewing store and Move you into a one of a kind specialty sewing store read more

What surprised me most about Save A Thon was how its name says it all. The prices range from fair to outstanding, and that's not the only one the reasons to go there. There's also this great balance between the store feeling cozy and one-of-a-kind, and also being chalk full of an amazing array of product. AND, from what the extremely nice sales lady told me, they have six-week sewing classes for $150! Thank goodness this store exists because there is no other place to get yarn in the Bay Ridge or Sheepshead Bay area. Truly astounding. I'm grateful to the posters who informed me that yarn is sold here. The staff were friendly, but the store is in need of better organization. A good selection of yarn may be found downstairs. I think the layout might work best if the yarn and sewing items were nicely organized downstairs, while the other miscellaneous household items be displayed nicely upstairs. The store looks cheap and disorganized and it doesn't have to. It just needs someone with a good sales & marketing eye to set things right, and more appealing to customers. This is a store located very close to Kings Plaza in Brooklyn. On the outside, it seems like they sell a mish-mosh of sale items and odd colored balls of yarn. Although I am not a fan of the yarn they carry (mainly Caron's Yarn, Lion Brand and Premier Yarns), I do like their sewing notions and fabrics. On the second floor, the fabrics are relatively nicely priced and occasionally they have sale fabrics for $2 a yard for cotton print. Most prices were cheap enough to make sewing fun again. Service is decent in that you can easily locate a worker to help you cut the fabric. However, they severely lack any sewing patterns so please come with a design in mind. They also sell a few used sewing machines ranging from $100-up. The notions are much cheaper than going to another store, in that they sell zippers, buttons and elastic waist banding. Definitely worth visiting if you happen to be in the area. read more

Great store especially for home decor. I got so many vases and art work to design my apt and everyone loves it and think I paid much more than what I did. Staff is friendly and helpful. I am new to sewing and was having a hard time finding a store that sold fabric near my apt. I didn't really feel like going all the way to the garment district. I found save a thon after buying a sewing machine on creigslist and asking the buyer if they had any suggestions. The one in Brooklyn seems to have a better selection of fabrics. If I lived in Brooklyn I would go there all the time! I went to the one on 3rd ave yesterday and wasn't impressed. However, what they did have was in my price range. The front of the store has $1 fabric racks, then inside the majority of their selection is about $2.99- 5.99/yard. Upstairs they have more craft supplies. Also, I was hoping to get information on their sewing classes, but apparently the ONE person who taught it quit. Overall, I will return. read more

Great store. I went for fabric, of which it has a limited selection compared to big stores in the garment district, but still I found something I could use. The fabric takes up one floor, the yarn takes up another, and then there are the art supplies, the party supplies, and all the great 99-cent-type knickknacks that make this a very fun shopping experience. I left with a lot more than I expected (a scarf, a coloring book) and will definitely come back when planning my next children's party. They are very hit or miss, you can pay two dollars a yard and get ok quality but there is usually something off, such as odd random seams and gatherings where they shouldn't be. The selection is also very poor, there is a smattering of nice cotton prints, but no knits, wools, or satins. Actually the majority is polyester. They have a large collection of knitting yarns and crochet thread. There is also a nice assortment of zippers, the notions are also good but you have to ask. One of their main problems is that the true quality stuff, such as nice elastic that is meant to be exposed on a garment, or Dritz notions, such as hook and bar, is behind the counter and the cashiers do not allow you to look. If you ask they typically take five years finding what you want, they are not very knowledgeable or helpful.they were great in the summer when I was first learning to sew but I have kind of outgrown them and will now just head to the Garment District read more

The Yelp deal was great, though for the first time ever in a fabric store I had trouble finding $20 worth of things that were worth the $10 price!!! The fabrics were horrible, the people who worked there had no idea what any of the fabrics cost, what they were made of, or which were the advertised sale items. They didn't seem to care much about fabric. I asked about knitting needles (haven't knit in a while) and was shown crochet needles. It was disheartening.
