Tried Bluffton BBQ based on Yelp reviews. We ordered the half chicken and the pulled pork . Our sides were coleslaw and fries. The meat and fries were very good. We were not fans of the coleslaw. I think it had a few olives in it which we do not like and I prefer a little sweetness in my slaw. The bbq sauce is good but I prefer sweeter sauce personally. Been here twice and love this place to bring out of town friends. The sweet potato casserole and unbelievable. The ribs were delicious and the meat just fell off the bones. The decorative signs on the walls were hilarious. (if you're not easily offended). You order food at the counter, they bring it to your table and you clean your own basket and throw trash away so don't expect fancy shmanzy. Bluffton BBQ does you one better, real cheddar cheese over sizable macaroni noodles. Its basically what Velveeta should have been before they realized how far government cheese could take them....and what they could charge for it. If you don't opt for the Mac & Cheese at Bluffton BBQ you are certainly missing out. Last but not least was the main course. I always struggle when I go to order at BBQ joints. My heart says RIBS! My mouth says BRISKET! My wallet doesn't say either, and in the end, I feel I must try the classic pulled pork sandwich at new BBQ places. The classic sandwich is the foundation that every BBQ place is built on. Fortunately for the guests, it's almost guaranteed to be really good or downright awful. I believe this to be the true measure of good Bar-B-Q. Rest assured, Bluffton's mouthwatering, high piled, pulled pork sandwich on golden, perfectly toasted bread is the epitome of BBQ in this area. Here again comes the unique touch of 1 tomato slice and their own house made sauce. I was unsure about the tomato addition at first but stepping away from the norm of a pickle or slaw on top of my BBQ proved to be a decision I will stick with more frequently. Glad I went here. I had the pork sandwich on Texas toast with fries and mac and cheese. My wife and her sister split the ribs, cole slaw, mac and cheese and Brunswick stew. My sandwich was amazing, the sauce was amazing, the ribs were amazing, the mac and cheese was amazing, the Brunswick stew was amazing, great atmosphere, great music, friendly staff, great price, the sweet tea was delicious and the French fries are probably the best I have ever eaten in my life. A-pork-alypse NOW!!! I watched a pig crawl across the edge of a straight edge razor...and onto my plate... Holy smokes, we may have a winner...I might call these the best ribs I have ever eaten. At the corner of May River Road and Bluffton Road is the friendliest little BBQ joint one could hope to find. Incredible ribs, really moist pulled pork with just the right amount of bark, loved the sides- had greens and mac, and do yourself a favor and get one of the little key lime pies. I wish I could give this a better review. We heard SUCH great things about the ribs here. Our story goes like this. We have heard that you need to get there early or call ahead to reserve your ribs otherwise they run out. We called ahead 3 dinner plates of ribs. By the time we got there they had run out of ribs (we heard other patrons requesting them and they were told they were sold out) but because we called ahead they had our set aside. I enjoyed the casual and bright ambiance of the restaurant and loved the "sh*t we won't ever have" menu including unsweet tea and a few others. My ribs were great. My dads ribs were great. My wife's ribs were off but we didnt realize it until she had almost eaten all of them and asked us if we'd like to help her finish them. They were DRY all the way to the bone but clearly hit with an extra layer of BBQ sauce on top. Im not sure exactly what happened there, but we were served a dud plate and it happened to have gone to my wife who was VERY pregnant at the time. I had a bit of her ribs ended up with gas later. Dad had a rib or two ended up hitting the bathroom pretty hard later. Wife unit got very sick. No harm to the baby or even to mom the next day, but it was disappointing that we would have been served what was clearly a bad rack of ribs. We never said anything to the cook because we don't really like to be confrontational but that's our story and we won't be back. read more

We found this place looking for something quick to get on our way to Hilton Head. When we left I noticed there were several other eateries in the same area and they were busy, while this place was empty. That made sense by the time we left. First of all, signs that call customers obscene names are not quirky or funny, they are rude. The girl at the counter was friendly but the attitude put forth by the message on the menu and the sign calling customers a dumb-a... if you throw away the plastic tray is just rude and disrespectful. If it's that big of a deal clear the tables yourself. But all that aside, the food was awful. I have had plenty of genuine, authentic, small batch, delicious bbq from all over the south. This made me nearly gag and spit my food back out. I tried to eat a few bites but it was the worst food I've ever had. Obviously they have been doing this a while, but just because you have technical ability doesn't mean you make it good. My husband and I both ended up sick after eating here. Please just avoid it. They were pleasant, friendly, and seemed to care if our food tasted good and if we were happy. Well, I can say that everyone at our table (3) were happy with our meal and no one complained about the decor or the service. And though two out of three at our table did not agree with the tea party nonsense on the wall, all of us left with happy stomachs and wallets that had not been damaged or abused. Quirky, family owned & operated, delicious, fun BBQ joint. We love it. First and most importantly- the BBQ is amazing. They have the best ribs I've ever eaten. THE BEST. Fall off the bone, spicy, smoky, d.e.l.i.c.i.o.u.s. Their sweet potato casserole is outstanding. Their collards are cooked just right- not too salty and never over-cooked. We also love their Brunswick Stew and Mac N' Cheese. Hands down all of their meats and sides are top-notch. Now, there are a couple of quirks about this place that are worth a mention: -- They close when ever they run out of food. This could be at 6pm on a Saturday night. They don't care, they just close. If they have a private party, they close. So, if you are driving over from SAV like we do, be sure to call first and place your order. If you call ahead, they'll save you food which is pretty sweet. --They do what they want - like, I think they only serve Sweet Tea (no un-sweetened tea) and they make no apologies. The don't serve Sprite and they don't do Mustard Based bbq sauces. If this bothers you, go get crappy bbq from a chain restaurant Oh, and they only have one high chair. We stumbled upon this place while walking through town. It was great! My Kids had the ribs and my husband and I had the pulled pork with the fork. We got two sides with our meal and in the request of the hostess I ordered the sweet potato side. She described as traditional thanksgiving sweet potatoes in the south! The potato salad and macaroni & cheese aren't necessarily anything to write home about, but when you're in a place that feels this much like home, there's no need to write anyway. I have had a good amount of ribs in my life and the half rack I destroyed at Bluffton was memorable. The surest way I have found to tell if a rack of ribs will be good or not is by gently pulling on one of the rib bones. The easier it separates from the meat, the better the skill of the cook and the better the taste of the meat. With these ribs, the bone came out with no effort. Wooh! The sauce is homemade. The meat comes with just a touch of sauce on it already, which allows the flavor of the meat to be the star of the show, as it should be. I enjoyed dipping my fries in the sauce on the side. I love this place. Family has a vacation home in the area and make a point of visiting every time I'm in town. Like everyone has said below, and Ted pointed out to me the first time I went, just try the RIBS. Hands down some of the best I've ever had. Fall off the bone, spiced, perfection. Ribs are a must, but the pulled pork, chicken and, of course, sweet potato casserole are all high lights as well. If you want it all because you're indecisive like me and want to gorge on everything, order up a Fat Bastard and prepare for meat heaven/food comatose. Personally, the food always takes precedence, but add in the flair from the pit-master and low country charm from the staff and building and achieve BBQ perfection. It's everything you want your BBQ experience to be and more. The right blend of 'we don't care what you think you know, you're going to love this shit' attitude and warm hospitality make for a rich experience both the local and passer by can enjoy. Delicious lovingly smoked pork served in a casual little BBQ joint. This place is wonderfully Bluffton: quirky, Southern, and small town. The pitmaster takes his job seriously and cooks his meat with pride. The ribs fall apart, retain their moisture and are spiced well. The pulled pork is equally moist and delicious. The sides are a great accompaniment to the meats, I've tried the homemade fries which were great, and the coleslaw is different than normal and I loved it... filled with olives and baby corn in a light dressing. The Brunswick stew is spicy and will warm you up. If you have a sweet tooth, try the sweet potato casserole. It's heavenly. We have found the staff to be quite welcoming and friendly. Gotta admit, Blufton's BBQ was pretty darn good. I got a Pork and a Fork plate. I tend to not get pork BBQ outside of SC, and I prefer the mustard based sauces of the South Carolina midlands. That being said, This was pretty darn good. The pork was juicy and tasty. The sauce, while not mustard based, was a great complement to the meat. for sides, I got the Mac and Cheese and coleslaw. The M&C was good. The slaw was interesting with bits of corn and olives, and something hot I couldn't identify. It was a winner! I hit there last night so it was a little on the quiet side (this is certainly the quiet season for the town), so the service was as fast as you'd expect for that sort of situation.
