The room was great and the bed was the best part. The mattress and the sheets were so comfortable it made it hard to get out of bed the last day. Also the owners and the manager Rusty were so helpful and friendly. Rusty made sure that we got our free breakfast coupon at the cafe next door. I will echo Nancy's sentiment that I'm reticent to let the secret out on this place. But it's just too good. We stayed at the Blue Star Motel a few days after Memorial Day Weekend. Despite the rather unpleasant weather for the majority of our stay, it was nothing short of wonderful. The rooms are definitely motel size (small!) but perfect for a couple - and besides, if you're in Saugatuck/Douglas, chances are you're not hanging around in your hotel room much. Doors from the bathroom lead out to two beautiful adirondack chairs that overlook a cute patio, complete with beautiful patio furniture and a hot tub. You can get a free or reduced-priced breakfast at the Waypoint, which is an easy walk from the hotel. In fact, Downtown Douglas is only a walk away. Love and care have made this place an awesome respite. I can't recommend it enough, and I can't wait to return. read more

Super cute and charming motel in Douglas right on the main strip near Saugatuck and Douglas. My mom and I decided to have a little west Michigan getaway and enjoy the lake shore in April before the tourist season started. The manager was friendly and welcoming and gave us a tour of the grounds. He made sure we had everything we needed for a relaxing getaway. There is a hot tub available and each guest room has a back door that opens to sitting area. The rooms are small but clean. There is a fridge, microwave, and coffee maker in each unit as well as a basket of snacks which are replenished daily (nice touch). Breakfast is included every morning at the charming restaurant next door (food is really good!). If you don't want breakfast you can use the voucher for $7 off anything on the menu. WiFi is also available and included. Definitely recommend Blue Star Motel and look forward to my next trip out to beautiful Saugatuck. read more

This motel was amazing. The room was super clean when we arrived. There is an incredible outdoor area behind the motel with a hot tub, fire pits and seating. I enjoyed a nice bon fire on the night I stayed there. There's a party store next door which makes it super continent. The pricing was also well worth it ! read more

Blue Star Motel is my new go-to place to stay when visiting Saugatuck/Douglas. The accommodations were excellent with the rooms and the entire hotel looking as if it has just went through a complete renovation. The beds are super comfortable and the only downside is not wanting to leave them to go out into the world. The staff at the motel were super friendly and were eager to help out with anything I needed during my stay. Prices are definitely reasonable and for the proximity to the Dunes Resort, you can't get a better deal. Looking forward to stayin at the Blue Star Motel on my next trip to MI! read more

Walls are very thin, heard next door neighbors arguing very loudly most of night. Very disruptive for a relaxing night after a long days drive. Bathroom sink is stopped up. Drains very slowly, obviously not something that just happened. Housekeeping should recognize this when cleaning the sink or do they clean it?? No place to put suitcase except on floor. Room doors not too secure especially back door. Rooms are clean and updated, back patio very nice. read more

We recently completed a two day stay at Blue Star Motel in Douglas, Michigan. We have been there before and were happy to return. it is well located for Douglas and Saugatuck as well as easy access to surrounding communities. Our room was comfortable, quiet and well appointed, included breakfast and offered an outdoor seating area, grill and hot tub. Best of all was Rodney McCrea, the assistant general manager, who was welcoming, attentive, available and accommodating to several requests we made. We will continue to use Blue Star as a resource when traveling to this area. read more

Nothing special, over priced, zero customer service (in fact we checked ourselves in and never met a single employee of the motel). WE ARE NOT PICKY PEOPLE! I'm not sure how other reviewers got away with only spending $100 a night. Our stay in the Patio Room was over $400 for 2 nights. My wife and I have driven past this place a couple times a year for the past 5 years and decided to give it a whirl. The photos look cute, the reviews are great, the location is perfect, etc. So we decided to book it for the whole weekend. I called to confirm my reservation early Friday and told the innkeeper that we would be arriving at about 6pm. While we were an hour away, we received a phone call telling us that the office was closing early and she gave us instructions on how to access the room, asking me to visit the office at some point to swipe and sign. No problem. We arrive and the room is okay. Though it has clearly been updated, there are obvious problems that needed attention. The shower head was loose, so it sprayed water all over the wall and curtain which reduced the water pressure to a trickle. The drain in the shower popped loose when you stood on it, exposing sharp metal edges. The handle on the toilet was dangling and loose. There was a bundle of wires dangling from the wall-mounted TV. I'm not a diva but these are very simple, basic fixes that would take about 3 minutes to remedy. The community hot tub was so murky that we couldn't even see our feet and the jets only worked in 2 of the 4 seats. Saturday morning, we walked to the cafe next door for the breakfast that is included in the price of the room. Direct quote from the Blue Star Motel website: "FREE HOT BREAKFAST We've paired up with a restaurant next door to give you the hot breakfast you need to jump start your day at the Lake!" We walk in, I go to Yelp and see that the owner is apparently an irritable person so we tread lightly. We order and get our food which was actually pretty good. When it came time to pay, the server informed us that we owed $9 because our drinks and side order of bacon were not included. Four pieces of bacon, one cup of black coffee and one Coke = $9. Ridiculous but whatever. We didn't go back the second day. Yes, we opted to pay full price for breakfast elsewhere... I walked down to the office no less than 5 times on Saturday before noon only to see a closed sign on the door. There's always tomorrow right? Wrong. The office was closed Sunday morning too even though the sign says the office is open at 10. There's always later in the afternoon right? WRONG! We dropped by one last time at 2pm on our way out of town and the office was still closed. Ridiculous. So in 3 days, we never saw a single person who worked at the motel. No check-in, no check-out... The truth is that if someone had been in the office Saturday, I could have politely informed the innkeeper of the plumbing problems and we would be happy. Heck, I would have been happy with our stay even if I just had the chance to speak with someone Sunday afternoon and they pretended to care. I'd like to think this is a fluke because so many other reviewers rave about the customer service. Thankfully, the area is great and my wife and I were still able to have a wonderful weekend despite this mess. We will never be back. You live and you learn. read more

Great little place with awesome Service. Just came back from a stay at Blue Star and I must say that I was very impressed with the hospitality and service of this place. First off , the Yelp! photos are right on, we stayed in room 8 and it was clean modern and well stocked for a local Inn. The property is very clean and well maintained. The rooms all back to a very nice private grounds area with hot tub, cabana sitting area, and plenty of adirondack chairs overlooking a quiet private wooded area. Service was just as great as the room. Rusty was very helpful from check in to check out and attentive to all our needs. Great recommendations for dining as well as sight seeing since it was our first time in the area. You can't beat close parking, free wifi and a good hearty hot breakfast at the adjacent restaurant all inclusive ! Overall you can't beat a small privately owned gay run place like this. Definitely received leaps and bounds beyond my expectations and can not wait to visit this friendly place again soon !!! read more

I stayed at this Motel with my Mom and we LOVED it!!!! An adorable place conveniently located close to downtown Saugatuck/Douglas. The room was CLEAN, every amenity you could wish for they have thought of, and reasonably priced. The best part hands down was the hospitality from Rusty, the General Manager. He was so friendly- showed us to the room and pointed out the snacks (included), the backyard with adirondack chairs and a hot tub, and the coupon for the breakfast (included) at the little diner next door. Rusty was friendly and proud of the property and it showed. Overall it was the perfect little place for us to stay! Also HIGHLY recommend oval beach- $6 for a car entry. Was greeted upon arrival by one of the managers, super nice guy, saw we had a daughter and gave us an entire box of girl scout cookies! Who does that now a days? He gave us a tour of the place, very cozy rooms, perfect for our days spent in Holland. Just a short car trip away. I would recommend this place to anyone traveling in the area. I would have loved to take advantage of the two wooden lawn chairs in the back, but the weather wasn't the best. The hot tub also looked relaxing, but wasn't able to partake due to the rain. My only issue was when I took a some what hot shower in the morning, was that the smoke alarm went off, it was just doing it's job, but there isn't much ventilation in the room itself. read more

Such a gem to stumble upon and thanks to all of the positive reviewers before me - this place is beyond a great value. Well kept room (yes, it's small, but it's a motel and we didn't plan on spending a lot of time in the room) and good use of the space. Nice sized closet and shelving in the bathroom. The bedding and décor is all updated which is much more than I can say of other places when looking through photos. They provide free water, juice and snacks in the room and the breakfast at the Waypoint was wonderful. There is also a nice little convenience store next door. We enjoyed the hot tub the first night we were there, clean and you can tell they keep it well kept. It was really nice to be able to just walkout the back of your room and enjoy the area, they have wonderful adirondack chairs and a nice patio. Very convenient to downtown Douglas and about 1.5 miles from downtown Saugatuck. We were there in the cold and snow, but I could definitely see walking to Douglas from the location. Upon check in, Rusty showed me to the room to make sure we could get in ok and also showed me the rest of the property. It's a small motel so you think it's easy to find everything like the ice machine etc but what a special touch to be welcomed with a tour! We stayed 2 nights and I wish we could have stayed longer. My husband and I live in Saugatuck and lost power during a bad storm, so we decided to get a motel room for the 2 days it took to restore electricity. I checked out a few of the hotels in the area, and remembered how The Blue Star Motel underwent some renovations and looked really cute since the remodel. They had a small refrigerator, a microwave, coffee maker, complimentary snacks and juice. We were able to take some of our perishables from home and save some food, which was nice. The room was super clean and modern, but quaint at the same time. The bed was comfortable and everything you could want or need was in the room. Rusty was so nice and helpful. In the back there is a beautiful area with a hot tub and lovely chairs. I imagine it is beautiful in the summer. I will be recommending it to visitors in the future. read more

My girlfriend and I were here for a week and every day we had a great time in the area of Saugatuck/Douglas. Definitely LGBT friendly! This place is CLEAN and I love the big shower for two. The micro and fridge are great for leftovers from all the yummy restaurants around, such as the WayPoint just around the corner. Another bonus are the coupons you get for the diner. Some days we paid nothing except the tip. Can't beat that! Rusty, Billy and the gang were always very accomodating and pleasurable. We loved the little snacks that would be left everytime the room was cleaned :) I have checked around and stayed in this area before, but the rates you cannot beat! So affordable you can stay a few extra days! Did I mention there is a hot tub out back? There are chairs right outside your back door, too, and while we were there, they also added one to wach of our front doors. We both HIGHLY recommend The Blue Star Motel! I personally will not look to stay anywhere else. Great hosts, clean rooms and the best rates. Who could ask for more? read more

I almost hate to write this review in fear that the Blue Star Motel will become too popular...but this place is the best! Clean. Modern. Everything is perfect and if it's not Rusty the manager or Billy the staff member will make it so. We stayed here the last week in May and not only was the weather ideal so was our stay. All the rooms look out onto a beautiful garden complete with hot tub, BBQ and gorgeous sitting area. Rusty even called ahead and made dinner reservations for us.
