Even though we live about 30 minutes from South Haven, we decided to spend the night and enjoy a winter getaway. No problems booking our room online. We opted for the main floor Captain's Room as Don was playing an afternoon gig in South Haven and needed to bring in his keyboard and amp. Maegan called me about a week ahead of our visit to introduce herself and to see if we were celebrating anything special. My family had a condominium on South Haven's South Beach for nearly 10 years back in the early 90's and I have walked by Hotel Nichols many many times but had no clue what type of hotel it was. When we checked in, I was blown away. Yes, it is old but it has great character. I much prefer to stay at locally owned hotels than to give my money to the big chains. Maegan made us feel right at home. Staying in the winter had some perks as we were given many coupons to use at local restaurants, wineries & breweries. They were not having a Happy Hour that evening but made a charcuterie board for us to take to our room. Our room was perfect. A king bed, bathroom, cookies, and a small refrigerator. We never did turn the TV on. While Don was entertaining the residents at River Edge Retirement Village, I walked all over South Haven. This was the number one reason I picked Hotel Nichols - location! It's right downtown. I knew we would have to park in one of the city lots, but it was no issue and just a short walk. After we spent the night progressing from dinner, to drinks, to listening to live music, we strolled back to Hotel Nichols (or I should say were swept to Hotel Nichols as the wind was nearly 40 mph). After hours, you do enter through a keypad entrance. We crawled into our big comfy bed and slept very good as the wind lulled me to sleep. As this was off season, they do not offer their complimentary breakfast, but did have coffee, which was fine with us. We were still full from our awesome dinner at Tellos. We checked out and on the drive back home we kept saying, what a great place to stay at. Can't wait to return.

    French toast for breakfast!

Fabulous historic boutique hotel right within walking distance to everything. Our room was very fresh and clean, and wish I remembered the front concierge name, because he was so so so nice and accommodating ; definitely works his tail off for his guests. Full breakfast included was great to have and accommodated dietary restrictions and was delicious. Despite being a very busy time of year, we had no issues with parking close or noise. We really appreciated the amenities like cold water , ice, coffee, tea, always being available. We will definitely be returning!

On my birthday, I was awakened by my smiling wife with the message that I needed to pack a getaway bag. Asking for additional details, Mary Anne said we were heading to South Haven, MI and spending the night a a downtown hotel. Mary Anne gave me the address for Hotel Nichols. We arrived in South Haven around 4:15p, and checked into the hotel. Upon entering, we were greeted with a well lit and inviting lobby. The message on the computer screen at the Desk said call a cell number for assistance. We called the number and were greeted by the bubbly voice of NaDean, the hotel manager and she said that she'd be right there help. Within thirty seconds, she appeared and gleefully checked us in. We were presented with a simple breakfast menu, and NaDean walked us through our choices. We both chose the Breakfast Burrito. We also were asked to provide a time for breakfast to be served. We could choose between 9:00a and 11:00a, in fifteen minute intervals - we elected to eat at 10:00a, Sunday morning. Following the formalities, NaDean broke down the lobby amenities and shared the technical details of navigating the hotel's common spaces. After that we were shown the way to our room. For our visit, and at the suggestion of Mary Anne's sister, we had reserved The Blue Room. Up the stairs and to the first room on the left. The room was immaculate and tastefully appointed with a side table and two chairs, a dresser and flat screen TV, a small chair and a king size bed in the first room. In and to the right was a smaller ante room with an additional single bed, a dorm fridge, a large closet and a full bathroom. NaDean pointed out all of the details, shared the how-tos for our stay - and much to our surprise presented a gift basket containing Sparkling Cider, a bottle of Wine, two glasses, chocolates, cheese, crackers, battery powered votives and holders, and other niceties. Too cool! She also shared some of the books available on the rooms book shelves. One of which Mary Anne throughly enjoyed, while I watched the Purdue/Virginia NCAA basketball game. And after the quick tour NaDean left us to ourselves. After settling our bags into the room we ventured out about the town. We took a drive around the town, ending up at the South Pier parking lot. We stayed to watch the Sunset, then headed to dinner at Maria's. Returning to the hotel, we retired for the evening. The room was very cozy, and the floor lamp and table lamp provided Mary Anne adequate light to look through the books, and read in bed. We talked comfortably never were disturbed by any noise from the other guests in the hotel. While you could hear folks ascending and descending the stairs next to our room, it was nothing distracting. We slept well, and after getting cleaned up and dressed we arrived for our breakfast appointment, promptly at 10:00a. True to her promise NaDean greeted us and walked through our morning beverage options. There was a selection of Keurig options, hot water for tea, orange juice, and a freshly prepared French Press. Being a coffee fan, I went French Press. Half and Half and French Vanilla creamer were available for use. Within minutes of our arrival, our pre-ordered Breakfast Burritos were delivered to our table. The were well prepared and delicious. An extra treat was the Jalapeño Crema that topped the burrito. Excellent! The burrito was paired with local sourced, thick sliced bacon, which was crisply prepared and very tasty. The fruit cup was a mix of Strawberry, Melon and Blueberries - also delicious. After a perfect two minute check back, we were left to enjoy our breakfast as a couple. We finished eating and were enjoying a second cup of coffee when NaDean returned to confirm our satisfaction, and clear our plates. Being history, old house and building nerds we asked several questions about the hotel. Our questions sparked a delightful conversation about the hotel's history, and her new role in the hotel's present and future. Mary Anne and I were very impressed with NaDean's historical recall, and her passion for managing all aspects of our experience. The hotel owners should be very happy with their selection for their facility management. NaDean does an amazing job at all aspects of the customer experience - Check-In, Housekeeping, Bookings, Kitchen Prep, Meal Service and Resident History Expert. In fact, we enjoyed our time at the Hotel Nichols so much that we took the opportunity to book our 31st anniversary weekend trip, in November. Hotel Nichols - highly recommended!

The building is set up as 16 individual Air B&Bs so they don't have to have anyone at the desk. There is no "Inn" experience to be had for us and you and your family. We tried to find someone to assist three times. We also texted. You get your code and you let yourself in and fend for yourselves. 2. No breakfast (to speak of) you and the other guests hover and pick over a couple of coffee cakes and frozen egg bites from Costco. 3. The entrance way to our Air B&B was in disrepair (PICTURE). The front door and the bathroom door due to age were very hard to close. We had to use our weight to secure ourselves into the room. The front door DID NOT have blinds, shades or the like. Anyone could look in on you and your family as you try to rest safely. Again, this was for $500 a night. 4. The temperature we changed (by remote) before we went to bed, it was very cold, woke up the next morning to an even colder room. Finally got a hold of staff (text) and they said "the remotes don't work I have the controls here in my living room". (PICTURED) 5. The bathroom was uninhabitable. ¼ of the bathroom (PICTURED) is I don't know what...but the moldy mirror is what you stare into as you are on the toilet. By now, you can guess the ply of the toilet paper. You also have to flush twice each time as this business was able to save money, deciding not to switch over the pluming and has kept the entire 16 units under a lone septic tank. Contained within is a shower (barely usable), another shower at the back which has been blocked off, no showerhead, the drain nailed shut. There is red tape (again, PICTURED) over a mysterious light switch. 6. The "Employee Area" that you are not supposed to enter but which shares a wall of this room which had a cut-out chunk of the wall which served as an unneeded night light at all hours. (PICTURE) The crusty white part at the top is where the bright light would seep into this unit. PROMISES and KNOWN UNTRUTHS: 1. Promised: The Jacuzzi tub. THERE WAS NONE. This claim as a lie. The only tub in the bathroom is the one (PICTURED). 2. Promised: The Private Deck. THERE WAS NONE. This claim is a lie. The one that was promised was the one (PICTURED) with the table setting...it's FAKE. THAT was never attached to our room. Never saw it. The deck we DID have had a nice view...BUT there were no partitions. At night we had someone cup their hands and watch us in bed. The same thing happened as we were trying to escape the next morning. My deck was EVERYONE'S deck. It would have cost this Air B&B less than $1K to put up simple wood partitions. But they didn't. The money must have gone toward the imaginary Jacuzzi tub. How would you feel? 3. Promised: Individual Heating and Cooling Controls. THERE WAS NONE. This claim is a lie. See above what we were told about our cold unit. If freezing, you have to hope you contact someone. In the meantime?? A very old house that hasn't seen love in many decades. The current owners, in evidence, have provided new paint here and there and flimsy wood stairs. I was told "please be patient as we work on this "amazing historic home, etc, etc." How about this. Don't open until you can provide your customers a safe place to stay. Our charge was $500 per night (including taxes, pet fee, etc., etc., etc.) per night. This business has yet to refund to us $1000. I'm SURE the response will be something sad like "if we would have known...if you would have called". WE DID. NO ONE WAS THERE. Your business knows what it's providing and what it isn't. All of us travelers deserve better. A few years from now this property will change hands yet again, from laziness and not wanting to invest the money. This was our first and last trip to Michigan.

Since then, two…read morethings have changed: breakfast is table service instead of buffet and the afternoon snacks are now a la carte indulgences. What hasn't changed is the quality of the food, the availability of triple chocolate brownies and popcorn 24/7, refreshing mint cucumber water, and treats in bowls scattered throughout the common areas. Elaine and Robert run a place that is impeccably clean and incredibly hospitable. They are very quick to address any concern or engage in friendly conversation. It is obvious they are experts in providing guests with an enjoyable stay. We stayed in the Ivy Room in the Manor. It isn't large, and it is at the top of the main stairs, but it's quiet and was just fine for us. The common areas are perfectly appointed for reading or eating or playing games. We had breakfast in the morning and played table games at night on the screened porch, which is lovely and especially charming in the dark. Re: things to do, there is plenty to keep you occupied at the B&B. We spent most of our days wandering around South Haven--walks on the beach, sunset at the pier, going into town for shopping and meals--or in other nearby lake towns, though, and relished the peace of the inn later in the day. If you are there when it's not crowded (e.g., during the week), YMBB has a pedal-powered surrey you can borrow! I will say, I was worried about the change in breakfast service since last time the buffet was amazing. My concern was unfounded, though--being served was delightful and the food options expanded with the inclusion of specialty entrees. We were provided with amuse-bouches of local blackberries with a dollop of whipped cream, plates of a variety of other local fruits, and plenty of choices from the standard and changing menus. My husband enjoyed the decadent quiches and I was happy to see steel-cut oatmeal on offer (with vanilla rhubarb syrup!). We discovered how wonderful hummus or sweet potato could be in the morning, too. Elaine expanded my idea of what breakfast could be, both for myself and at a B&B; I didn't miss casseroles, muffins, or bacon/sausage at all (like what we've had at other places). A special touch that highlights their personalized service -- I mentioned to Robert one afternoon that I meant to tell Elaine to save me some of the edges that are trimmed off before the triple chocolate brownies are served. He found some for me within a few minutes and, when my husband and I arrived at breakfast the next morning, there was a plate of them put side with plastic wrap and a note with my name. So thoughtful! Those chewy edges are my FAVORITE. Even in the smallest, least expensive room, we consider a trip to YMBB a special treat. We are the kind of couple who travels by car and engages in cheap adventures (hiking, camping, etc.). Going away without a planned itinerary is out of my comfort zone...usually. This long weekend of relaxation and restoration convinced me there's another way, and the treatment we received at Yelton Manor was no small part of that.

When we checked like every other hotel it was a ghost town at the front desk, as I walked around a clerk came out. We get checked in and go to my suite 315 and first red flag the door keys were not coded, the doors would not open and so I had to go back down to first floor and get them coded. I get back to the room and come in and superficially it was kind of cool, I went to the jacuzzi and find a giant clump of soap scum and used bar of soap. Disgusted I go to the front desk and make it known and the clerk said some one would be notified, as they had no other staff. As I am back at the room my despair begins to multiply as the remote held together with a rubber band does not change the channel and the tv didn't work. So i monkeyed with the tv got Comedy Central come on and that was it, remote would not change anything and control on the box and tv would not respond also. I start seeing how filthy this hotel really is, I went to get ice in the one machine on the second floor where there appears to be a build up of filth and kind of looks like the building is falling apart along with the broken vending machine and the filthy ice machine. So disappointing. I checked back with the front desk and they said someone was coming to clean the jacuzzi I told them we were going out for dinner and would be back and to enter the room to clean. We come back after an hour its 630p and nobody is there. I go to the front desk and tell them I can clean it but I want money back and would need cleaning material. She said she would check with their manager. I come back after another hour and she would did not get permission to give me cleaning material. The front desk finally offers to switch me to the other jacuzzi room w/o a bed couch so i declined and cleaned the jacuzzi with body soap. I also took my son to the pool and there were glops of hair floating on the surface and on the deck, such a nasty place. The door lock was so shaky it appeared to have been kicked in as it would shake in the wall. So on top of all this on one of my many trips to the front desk to try and get some sort of service, a unhoused person whom I saw earlier at the intersection with his carboard sign talking to themselves came in and sat their garbage bag next to me. The man shaking and jerking movements shows me a wad of cash stating he had money for a room but no ID, asked if he could rent a room with my ID. I of course look desperately for any sort of attendant and find no one. The homeless man then starts reaching over the counter and going through the room keys while talking to himself. I pointed to the camera finally and he says "you told on me" and put the room keys back, after 5 minutes the clerk appeared like a genie finally and again has no way to provide any help as they have no cleaners nor manager. So I left her with the homeless guy, sorry. So after reading that run on, now you see how unsafe this place is also. Later around midnight the clerk was talking to another employee and she told him about all the stuff that happened and he just glares at me while counting the cash in the register, very welcoming. Same thing happened when I go to get the cart in the morning and again nothing is said just another glare from the dude. So I emailed the manager, expecting something as it was the most expensive room(over 200), but was like sleeping in a tent next to the highway. Still no reply.. I also wonder how many generic apologies will they issue to these reviews before the try and change? I'm beyond mad so I guess I will take the pictures to Choice Hotels and Radisson and see maybe get some movement there.
