I want to selfishly tell you place is terrible, so that I don't have to worry about not getting a room when they open booking, but the truth is that this place is AMAZING! The photos do not do this place justice. Staff is super friendly and they say hello as you walk by and make you feel welcome. Rooms, are clean and cozy. We got the standard king and it was really nice. The grounds are immaculate, and beautiful. The pool is heated and we never couldn't find lounge chairs. The dock by the lake does get a bit busy if you don't get there after breakfast, but we still got chairs. There was a wait for the kayaks, but only because there aren't enough paddles. Breakfast is delicious and it was a good mix of fresh, healthy and with a few sugary goodies like donuts and muffins. It's a really wonderful, relaxing and quiet adult only resort. read more

A literal slice of heaven. The best money I have ever spent, the best hotel I've ever been to. I went with my partner for our anniversary last weekend and was immediately floored by the views. The hospitality was so welcoming (shoutout to Melissa and David my angels), calm, sweet, and helpful. The grounds are gorgeous, the lobby beautifully designed and cozy, and the rooms gorgeous (floating stone slab bedside table yes pleeeasssee!) The complimentary breakfast was so yummy and had so many healthy options. The beach was lovely, the bikes were so fun, and everyone kept a quiet atmosphere that was serene but not strict. I'm from Los Angeles and have travelled all over Europe--this resort took the cake for my most relaxing experience. I WILL be returning as often as I can. Thank you thank you THANK you! This is our go to place for Southwest Michigan. Right on the lake in a mid century modern motel. The lobby/coffee bar/breakfast area has such a cool and relaxing vibe. They have bikes, kayaks and a paddle board for lake activities. Breakfast included and not just your normal continental breakfast. Wanting to escape Chicago for a few days to unwind on a solo vacation, Saugatuck was the perfect destination. I had heard great things about Lake Shore Resort, and it certainly did not disappoint. From my first interaction with Michelle upon checking in, to my last interaction checking out, the staff went above and beyond to make sure my stay was memorable. All my dealings with the staff over the two days were nothing short of exceptional, with the friendliest and most professional staff. The resort is very well-maintained, rooms are clean and comfortable and the location on the shoreline makes for the most incredible sunsets - truly a stunning and tranquil location! Visited during the time of Covid as a getaway. This resort is amazing!!! If you are seeking a peaceful quiet place to relax, this is your place. Soooo quiet!!! I loved it!!! I could hear the birds chirping while floating in the pool. Pure Heaven!! The grounds are so well maintained. I wanted to steal their landscapers!!!! As COVID is still around, they have switched to delivery of breakfast each morning and also to Housekeeping only to deliver preselected items. The breakfast was delish and I looked forward to it each morning. And I found that I really liked being able to request items from housekeeping. Maybe this will become a new model if guests chose??? I've been staying at the Lake Shore Resort now for years and I love it. One of my favorite places to stay in Michigan. The amenities are amazing. A private beach on Lake Michigan (with a lovely landing on the stairs headed down there for sipping wine and watching the sunset), complimentary kayaks, complimentary bikes, a swimming pool, a small putting green, a few small grills if you want to cook on sight, tons of outdoor seating to take in the sights and the lovely weather, hiking trails behind the resort, fire pits, etc etc. Everything you could want in one beautiful space. I've come both with my fiance to enjoy relaxing getaways and most recently on a trip with 8 girlfriends to celebrate my bachelorette party. And each time I've had a perfect experience. The staff is friendly and SO accommodating. They bent over backwards to make our ladies' weekend stay successful and I appreciated it so much. It's also adult only so if you want a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere (and a swim in a pool without kids splashing around you) this place is great. Now here's the deal, the rooms? They're nothing fancy. So don't roll in expecting anything other than a bed, a bit of furniture, and a simple bathroom. This isn't a deluxe suite but it's totally okay because you're not going there for the room. You're going for the beautiful beach and other amenities. And for what you need the room for (sleeping, showering, changing, etc) it's perfect. Each room does have a small flat screen TV (I don't think I've ever turned them on, though) and a fridge which is perfect for bringing back wine, beers, or snacks and keeping them chilled. Also worth noting--there is no wifi on the premises and the phone service can be spotty. If you HAVE to stay connected to the outside world this is something to consider but it's also quite nice to be forced to get away from it all. An all around amazing spot with fantastic amenities. Again, the rooms are not plush but the space surrounding them is so ideal that you won't be wishing for anything else. read more

Really wanna give 3.5 but I'll round up in lieu of down. The king room was clean. The bathrooms are small. The location is quiet and right on the Lake. Barely a view from room, not really. Lots of outdoor seating to watch sun set. The soft scape (curtains, pool lounge pillows, carpets et al) are in need of replacing. The breakfast options are fine but are not "resort" quality. And for $400/night midweek I'd expect a bit better. The staff seems a bit overwhelmed and can be off putting. read more

While I don't want this place to get even more in demand than it is, I have to compliment how wonderful it is. The location is stunning. The room was beautiful (although I would never spring for a deluxe room again - there was no need for that since we were never in our room and would never want to use the small "seating area" right outside our front door). I expected the complimentary breakfast to be some sort of mediocre continental buffet, but it was an actual delicious breakfast, served at your table, and beautifully plated. And since we never eat breakfast at home, I skipped all the baked goods inside until the last morning when I discovered I had made a rookie mistake. Those baked goods were amazing - don't miss out. But the best thing about this place is the quiet serenity that comes from NO KIDS allowed! This place gives serious relaxation vibes and we loved it! Oh my gosh. You need to come stay here. This place is truly one of the most beautiful places we have ever stayed. No kids allowed made for a very relaxing and romantic weekend, but we saw plenty of other guests who were visiting with friends or family, not just significant others! You have to walk across the street to get to the stairs down to the lake, which have plenty of seating to enjoy the water. The beach is gone now, but we barely missed it. Huge pool, very nice clean rooms, and such a cozy main house. The breakfast was simply amazing, and the service the entire week was just so kind, warm, and friendly. We never heard "no" the entire time we were there! The place is small, so you certainly get to know other guests and staff. There were games provided in the main house, bikes and kayaks available for use, and a free coffee bar all day. They even put out little treats randomly throughout the day like ice cream or donuts! The sunset is magical, and there are plenty of places to sit and watch. We recommend bringing a bottle of wine and some snacks or food, because we didn't want to leave to go eat! Though, ride the bikes to the nearby Root beer Barrel for lunch, dinner, or a snack, and you won't regret it. This entire resort was so cozy, relaxing, and luxurious. We just left the resort and I just have to Rave about it! It was perfect! Clean, beautiful, modern and we had the most amazing sunset and breakfast! We could bike ride and kayak for free! The grounds are immaculate and the pool is so pretty ! There are lovely spots to sit and read under the big ol trees and the Adirondack chairs are super comfy! I can't wait to come back!!! We had a great stay here in June 2021! Helpful, pleasant staff. Our room was modern and clean. We loved that they provided us with stemless wine glasses and a corkscrew. The grounds are very well maintained. We took advantage of the complimentary beach cruiser bikes to ride into downtown Saugatuck, and kayaked down the coastline on a calm morning. The complimentary breakfast was also fast and filling. And, of course, we loved being able to watch the sunset from the private beachfront patio areas. I'd stay there again. read more

Lake Shore Resort just keeps getting better. All rooms have been updated. Our room was just finished before we got there and maybe a few of the finer details were still incomplete. Not enough to worry about; they will take care of things. And if you plan on spending most of your time in your room, go someplace else. The owners and staff keep this place in A+ shape at all times. Shady, tranquil grounds with a huge perfect-temp. pool. Many places to sit and enjoy the lake, the beautiful grounds, the fire pits around sunset, the occasional passing deer. We saw a bald eagle cruise by as well. Enjoyed a nice continental breakfast on the outdoor deck. The only downside...eventually you have to leave. read more

If you are planning a trip to the Douglas and Saugatuck area, but are looking to be a bit removed with beautiful views and amazing sunsets, then the Lake Shore Resort is the place to be. The rooms are small, but they are clean. The mattresses need replacing, and the decor is very basic, but you shouldn't be spending your time in your room anyway. They have an in ground pool, open during the summer, fire pits, stairs down to the beach, kayaks, benches, tables and chairs all around the property. In the morning, there is a simple continental breakfast overlooking Lake Michigan, and there is free wifi in the office, and beyond if the signal is cooperating. Cell signal is hit or miss depending on your carrier, but who cares? Again, it shouldn't be your priority. The LSR also has a vending machine, ice machine, and bikes and helmets that you can borrow to enjoy driving along the coast line. This resort is purely magical. My mother and I take a girls' trip every summer to relax, go shopping, and eat at all the wonderful places in Saugatuck and Douglas. Sure, it's a bit pricey, but the location and the relaxation afforded to you for the cost are truly priceless! read more

Grounds and rooms are immaculate, so pretty and lots of outdoor seating. Beautiful sunset view, great beach, (82 stairs to the beach) bicyclesand kayaks to use, chairs, (towels are also provided.) Friendly staff, made us feel so welcome. Close enough to downtown areas, but secluded. Didn't like the $30/person charge after two people, I think that's a bit excessive. Now I feel like I'm betraying something sacred! -divulging information that is private and under high security. Should I continue, well, maybe just a little info, like my personal facts. This place: Is very private, it's at the "end" of lake shore drive, has the best direct view of Lake Michigan of "anywhere", every room has some type of view, has a private beach down a lot of stairs, provides beach umbrellas, kayaks & bikes for free, has a grill and fire pit available, has IMPECIBLE beautiful grounds, has an extremely clean big beautiful pool, is adults only, has comfortable beds, has great daily maid service, has new air conditioning systems for hot summer days, has wi fi on the deck by the office which has an unbelievable view of the lake, everyone who comes here is very friendly w/every type imaginable, and they provide breakfast (very limited) if you don't want to go to town. We've been coming here for years, every anniversary. They only take reservations starting on a certain day in the spring. You usually call for a couple days before you can get thru. They are very pricey, but if you want a private meditative adult location w/a private beach and peaceful quiet adult swimming, it's worth it. The rooms are not the Hilton so don't expect it. -No flat screen and coordinated décor. You don't come here for the rooms. (but beds are comfortable) They are vintage hodge podge but very OK. They have a little frig, hair dryer, soft water, plenty of drawer space, community micro wave, snacks & ice, and no iron or board in rooms but can request one for use. My husband and I stayed at Lake Shore for 2 nights over Labor Day weekend. The view down to the private waterfront area is truly breathtaking. The beach is clean and sandy, and comes equipped with kayaks, lounge chairs, and umbrellas for guest use. Overall the grounds are beautifully kept. Pretty flowers, warm fire pits, trimmed bushes, green grass--really quite nice. This is definitely a place you want to visit when the weather is pleasant so you can enjoy the outdoors, since the rooms themselves leave much to be desired. They are outdated and a little musty. The beds are so soft we sunk into the center and paid for it the next day with back and neck aches. If you like white noise you're in for a treat, the window unit A/C roars like the sweet lullaby of a freight train. The other downside of Lake Shore is the staff. This was the third place we stayed in while touring the west side of Michigan, and the staff was not half as warm and welcoming as the other innkeepers we encountered. For example... I was asked to pay the balance upon check-in which I thought was odd. When I attempted to dispose of a few paper plates and pizza crusts in the kitchen area, I was asked to instead walk it to the other side of the property because the garbage can I wanted to throw it in was for "breakfast garbage." And upon checkout, the woman at the front desk did not so much as glance in my direction when I walked in...I realized a few seconds later that she was on the phone, but you'd think you might make eye contact or maybe hold up the just-one-minute finger. I stood there for a few minutes (still no eye contact or acknowledgement of my existence) then just left my key on the counter and drove away...after all, I had already paid upon check in. All in all, the beach itself is so relaxing and beautiful that it is worth a return visit. But next time we will likely stay just one night. read more

My husband and I came here right after we got married. The spot is absolutely stunning. It's right on the water and has its own private beach. There is fresh and healthy continental breakfast, a pool, firepits, a nature trail, and kayaks and bikes for borrow. Our stay here was so relaxing. The rooms are a bit simple for the cost. Here, you are truly paying for a beachfront location. What I loved about this hotel is that there aren't kids running all over the place. I think that the minimum age is 14. Families, take your kids to Wisconsin Dells (or any family resort in Saugatuck). This hotel is for grown-ups. This hotel is a short drive to downtown Douglas and Saugatuck, 20-30 minutes from Holland, and 15 minutes from Fennville. Those looking for a more "nightlife" experience should probably stay in downtown Saugatuck. If you plan on bar-hopping from here, have a designated driver OR get a cab. This is more of a place to bring your own wine and relax by the firepits. This is also not the place for those looking for a full-service hotel/resort, or for families. We drove up from Columbus, Ohio to celebrate my birthday at Lake Shore Resort and had expected to spend our time swimming and kayaking Lake MI. So, when we arrived the first thing we did was head down to the water. LSR technically has beach access though I doubt most people actually swim in the lake due to the fact that the beach has eroded and what's left is a sliver of sand and rough rocks that are rather uncomfortable to walk on barefoot. There was a wind advisory that day so on top of this the water had churned up quite a bit of sediment, algae, and detritus that was rather unpleasant not to mention the choppy waters constantly threatened to smash us into the larger boulders at the top of the shore. Being that the whole point of our vacation was centered around swimming in the lake we decided to ask if they could refund our stay so we could check out and find a hotel further up the lake where the water quality was nicer, and there was an actual beach. After a bit of runaround, we were told that they would refund the 2nd night. We decided to check out immediately, not wanting to waste any time at a resort that we felt had falsely advertised beach access. When we told the receptionist she seemed rather surprised that we were actually leaving and mentioned that management may end up not charging for either nights being that we weren't staying. Considering we were there for approx 2 hours max and didn't use the room, we had hoped they would just refund the full amount as we really had felt let down. However, after returning home, we discovered they charged for the first night and while this is technically within their right to do so, I feel like they missed so many opportunities to turn things around yet failed. I wouldn't waste my time here again and instead would opt for something less expensive in closer proximity to a nicer beach. read more

Would not recommend this MOTEL. Way, way overpriced. Definitely not a "hidden gem." Pick a nice beachfront HOTEL--costs a lot less! It's important to remember that this is not a hotel--it's a motel. When we first opened the door to our "unit," a musty "old building" smell hit us. So we had to sleep all night in a musty room. Great for mold lovers. Air conditioning? Well, that was a room-type AC that blew on me in bed when I was trying to sleep. Had to barricade the flow from my bed, using our travel luggage. We came for rest and relaxation. Impossible because a worker with an industrial-loud leaf blower made the place sound like a construction site. No relaxation here. The outdoor pool? Would have been nicer if there wasn't grass clippings and other debris floating in the water. The lake view is nice. But if you really want to get close, you have to carefully negotiate a very steep 100 or more stairs. Climbing back up is not fun. read more
