From the moment I was researching and communicating with Jenn the innkeeper, until the moment we checked in and met Steve and Jimmy, we felt comfortable and welcomed and so happy with our choice. The house has been transformed into eight separate bedrooms with their own private bath, and each is well appointed with the most luxurious bedding and soft pillows and mattress. I loved the pillow so much that I ordered one to be shipped to my home! Steve and Jimmy greeted us with a glass of wine and a little history of the building and the area and gave restaurant recommendations and things to do. Each morning Jenn created a wonderful three course breakfast that kept me full all day until dinner. Waking up for the 930 spread was the highlight of each morning! Nothing was store-bought, nothing. She is a master baker and chef and takes pride in her presentation and selection of food. I have never stated at a B&B and was concerned that it would feel like sharing space with strangers, but that was not the case. The first night was a full house with all 8 rooms occupied and everyone was respectful of each other. Jenn and Steve were available as much as we wanted them to be, but gave us our space to do our own thing. I would highly recommend staying at Judson Heath and let Jimmy, Jenn and Steve show you around their cute, quaint and adorably perfect town.

Steve and Jenn were excellent hosts. They gave us restaurant recommendations and a brief history of the building (established in 1837!). Jenn cooked an amazing 3-course breakfast daily, and I devoured every bite. My favorites were the baked goods, like blueberry cake. We stayed in the Elton room on the top floor that had a lot of nice touches and character to it. It had a jacuzzi (although don't use it past 10pm to avoid disrupting the guests below)! The bed was comfortable, and the views overlooking the Japanese garden and two different streets were nice. You also use a vintage key to open and lock the room. The location is awesome, and everything is walkable from this inn. Keep in mind that there are about four car spots in the lot, but there is generally free street parking as well. One of the highlights at this inn is definitely Steve's and Jenn's Chihuahua dog named Jimmie! He is absolutely adorable and greeted us upon arrival as well as throughout our stay. During breakfast, he was sniffing the ground for dropped food from guests. It must have worked in the past because he knew when it was time to come out! I highly recommend staying here. We'll be back in the future!

We were slightly concerned when we decided to stay at the Valentine Lodge. We read several reviews…read morethat were not good at all. It's hard to say with anything regarding on-line reviews though because for every negative review you will undoubtedly find a couple positive reviews. After searching online for hotels and then B&Bs in the Saugatuck/Douglas area we were nearly scared off by the high costs of other chains and B&Bs. Then we found the Valentine Lodge. We almost couldn't believe the listed cost because of the comparables. We booked the room online and then called and spoke with the owner. From the start they were very nice people and assisted with our questions. If you are looking for the Ritz, Raddison or some other other high end chic hotel, this is not it! Go ahead stay at one of those and pay quadruple the cost for a room. If you are looking for a decent room, friendly staff and a place close to town this is a great bet for you. We arrived on a Friday afternoon to stay through Sunday and couldn't help be impressed by the size of the house. Think old world charm of a southern style mansion with a beautiful front porch on the first and second floor facing the street. The grounds were immense and well kept. We met the owner and she graciously explained their rooms, policies and assisted with the area. As we made our way up the grand staircase we were a bit awestruck buy the decor and size of the home. Yes there are a lot of paintings as she is an artist. I thought they were pretty and added to the charm of the place. We found our room on the third floor and got a bit settled in. My ONE complaint of the room was the hard bed. It didn't bother me a ton but my girlfriend wasn't thrilled. The bathroom was clean, the bedroom was clean and the decor was dated but fine. Again if you're going to pick a bed and breakfast apart for older decor you should probably be staying at a high end hotel. We enjoyed the free wifi and charm of the place. We were out late and had no problems getting in and heading to bed. The next morning we headed down for the breakfast. Everything was clean and well prepared. It looked like it may have been a family affair with everyone pitching in. The egg dish was not marked with it's ingredients, (as one reviewer lamented) I didn't care, it was delicious! There was fresh fruit, hash browns, an egg scramble, juice, water and appropriate condiments. They provide trays if you wish to eat outside on the front or back porch or even on the second floor enclosed porch. We opted for the second floor. Upon return to the kitchen area they were cleaning and making sure the guests were taken care of. From the moment we checked in until we left on Sunday the owner was friendly and helpful. It's obvious that her and some of her family live in the home because they are at your beck and call for all intensive purposes. We had a great experience at the Valentine Lodge bed and breakfast and would definitely suggest it to others. Again if B&B's aren't your thing and you expect high class amenities go to a high end place. We would definitely stay here again.

On walking up to the place, it looked very cozy, warm, and inviting. The couple who own the B&B are super nice, very helpful, and just adorable. We stayed in the Valentina Room, which is on the second floor, first door on the left. It was actually bigger than I expected and had a large king size bed. We were very comfortable there. The house itself is charming, and the walls are decorated with oil paintings done by one of the family members. There are two very large decks - one in front of the house on the ground floor and the other is a large screened in porch in the front of the house on the second floor. We used both during our stay using the main floor one to eat breakfast and the second floor one to relax, drink tea, and read books/magazines before bed. This B&B is located in Douglas, which is just a short five minute drive from downtown Saugatuck. I was glad to be a little out of town, as it was always peaceful and quiet at Valentine Lodge. There was free wi fi (we never used it), wine glasses, a corkscrew, a mini fridge, and a mini coffee pot in our room, on demand tea on the porch, and board games and books to use throughout the house. Oh, and the breakfasts were just delicious. On Sunday morning, there was toast, yogurt, three kinds of quiche, blueberry cake, fruit salad, and of course coffee and orange juice. On Monday morning, we were the only guests at the B&B and we were asked what time we wanted breakfast and were told she would make it for us whenever we wanted. That breakfast was lovely too and consisted of bagels, toast, scrambled eggs, fruit salad, yogurt, coffee, and orange juice. It was ready the moment we walked down the stairs. I highly recommend this wonderful B&B. It would be a shame to miss it.

It was fine, but I would suggest a couple of things: the bathtub had nothing on its floor and no texture so it was very slippery! Also, the furnishings are very dated and need to be replaced. The one bedroom had a king bed and a full bed in it so there was very little floor space. A sofabed would work much better. My daughter and her family stayed in the suite next door and the exterior door frame had alot of peeling paint (not great for little kids!) The pool was great and it had a hot tub which was nice to have in the cool evenings. The entrance to the place needs a light. At night you can't see it! All in all, I would give it a 3.5-4.

The building is set up as 16 individual Air B&Bs so they don't have to have anyone at the desk. There is no "Inn" experience to be had for us and you and your family. We tried to find someone to assist three times. We also texted. You get your code and you let yourself in and fend for yourselves. 2. No breakfast (to speak of) you and the other guests hover and pick over a couple of coffee cakes and frozen egg bites from Costco. 3. The entrance way to our Air B&B was in disrepair (PICTURE). The front door and the bathroom door due to age were very hard to close. We had to use our weight to secure ourselves into the room. The front door DID NOT have blinds, shades or the like. Anyone could look in on you and your family as you try to rest safely. Again, this was for $500 a night. 4. The temperature we changed (by remote) before we went to bed, it was very cold, woke up the next morning to an even colder room. Finally got a hold of staff (text) and they said "the remotes don't work I have the controls here in my living room". (PICTURED) 5. The bathroom was uninhabitable. ¼ of the bathroom (PICTURED) is I don't know what...but the moldy mirror is what you stare into as you are on the toilet. By now, you can guess the ply of the toilet paper. You also have to flush twice each time as this business was able to save money, deciding not to switch over the pluming and has kept the entire 16 units under a lone septic tank. Contained within is a shower (barely usable), another shower at the back which has been blocked off, no showerhead, the drain nailed shut. There is red tape (again, PICTURED) over a mysterious light switch. 6. The "Employee Area" that you are not supposed to enter but which shares a wall of this room which had a cut-out chunk of the wall which served as an unneeded night light at all hours. (PICTURE) The crusty white part at the top is where the bright light would seep into this unit. PROMISES and KNOWN UNTRUTHS: 1. Promised: The Jacuzzi tub. THERE WAS NONE. This claim as a lie. The only tub in the bathroom is the one (PICTURED). 2. Promised: The Private Deck. THERE WAS NONE. This claim is a lie. The one that was promised was the one (PICTURED) with the table setting...it's FAKE. THAT was never attached to our room. Never saw it. The deck we DID have had a nice view...BUT there were no partitions. At night we had someone cup their hands and watch us in bed. The same thing happened as we were trying to escape the next morning. My deck was EVERYONE'S deck. It would have cost this Air B&B less than $1K to put up simple wood partitions. But they didn't. The money must have gone toward the imaginary Jacuzzi tub. How would you feel? 3. Promised: Individual Heating and Cooling Controls. THERE WAS NONE. This claim is a lie. See above what we were told about our cold unit. If freezing, you have to hope you contact someone. In the meantime?? A very old house that hasn't seen love in many decades. The current owners, in evidence, have provided new paint here and there and flimsy wood stairs. I was told "please be patient as we work on this "amazing historic home, etc, etc." How about this. Don't open until you can provide your customers a safe place to stay. Our charge was $500 per night (including taxes, pet fee, etc., etc., etc.) per night. This business has yet to refund to us $1000. I'm SURE the response will be something sad like "if we would have known...if you would have called". WE DID. NO ONE WAS THERE. Your business knows what it's providing and what it isn't. All of us travelers deserve better. A few years from now this property will change hands yet again, from laziness and not wanting to invest the money. This was our first and last trip to Michigan.
