This is a small and adorable historical hotel - we had a dinner reservation on a Thursday night but probably didn't need one. They let us pick where we wanted to sit so we ate on the front porch which was nice and cozy. Highly recommend the lavender martini! Our dinners were delicious, especially their rolls and garlic butter. We didn't leave a lick of food on our plates. I think there was only one waiter working but he had all tables well in hand and we were a bit surprised at how quickly everything was delivered once ordered. Highly recommend and we look forward to visiting again the next time we are back in the area. read more

The Kirby is housed in an old Victorian home along Blue Star Highway. Inside it's cozy and comfortable. The food and service both are excellent. While they're known for their very reasonably priced prime rib, the other entrees also looked and tasted fantastic. The prime rib pictured here was cooked perfectly for me. It was super tender and seasoned to perfection. I usually don't order beef in restaurants because most places just don't prepare it properly anymore. But The Kirby does this prime rib very nicely. The tuna entree pictured here was full of flavor and the tuna was cooked perfectly. The scallops entree (not pictured) was amazing. For apps we shared the pork belly brussels sprouts and the baked brie, both of which were delicious. It took us over 2 years to try The Kirby. But we won't be waiting anywhere near that long for our next visit. read more

Awesome -- The rooms are great. We got one of the rooms with an in room bathroom. It was very nice, cozy and comfy. Found out that the other rooms also have private bathrooms, you just walk out into the hall and into the bathroom next door (but it is your private bathroom). Next time I would gladly do that too. All options are awesome. This great Bed and Breakfast is always sold out so book ahead... such a great experience. Now let's talk about the food... oh my! probably the best restaurant in the area. We are dinner and breakfast. Chris (the chef) is a master of his trade. There is no doubt he loves his craft. He comes out and talks to you about the meal, shares his inspiration, and leaves you begging for more. We will 100% go back again. read more

Ok I wrote a less than stellar review earlier this year. We decided to give this place another chance due to our gripe being with the server and a lot of positive attributes during our first visit. This time the service and food was fantastic. Wine selection especially if you want choice among white wines---terrific. My wife and I stayed here for two nights and absolutely loved it. The room was nice and updated. The service was absolutely amazing and everyone was extremely friendly. Old Victorian in business since 1890. Lovingly cared for interior paired with more modern furniture. Filet with demi reduction and Yukon potatoes was lovely. Off one star because it was medium well instead or medium rare, but still tender because it was a filet. Wonderful and friendly service. read more

We hosted a rehearsal dinner at the Kirby last Friday for our son and his bride. There were 25 of us and the Kirby's staff delivered! The charcuterie was well appointed and had multiple gluten-free items. Four gluten-free dinner choices were provided and all 25 were served within 10 minutes. Lots of compliments about the dinner and the Kirby, they know what they are doing! read more

RESTAURANT ONLY: The Kirby is an absolutely stunning 1890's Victorian and Michigan Historic Site. The house itself is home to a boutique hotel and a wrap around porch, pond, lavish backyard decks and gardens surrounded by forest and "a cozy wine lounge and indoor and outdoor dining under the stars." There really is no other comparison when it comes to atmosphere. (See photos) We sat on the outdoor dining area in the back. We had a cheese plate, a glass of red and a glass of prosecco. Everything was quality. However the portion of the cheese plate was the smallest I have ever had and I order one at almost everywhere I go. Feedback: either raise the price and offer more, or make this more apparent on the menu. Would recommend for a romantic dinner over apps/drinks. Or come here for a romantic nightcap under the stars and cozy up in their lounge furniture overlooking their little pond - either way definitely put this one on your Saugatuck bucket list for a romantic night out. read more

I like kickin it at The Kirby with my friends. Whenever I'm in town I come to the Kirby to eat, drink and be merry. I like how it's grown and improved over the last few years. This year's addition is a lovely back patio. Just beyond the patio is a small pond and fountain adding soothing white noise. I feel like I'm in the Hampton's when I'm here. We were advised to make reservations and we did 24 hours in advance. Staff held the door open for us as we walked in. Service was wonderful. My dinner sidekick ordered the pasta and shrimp and I had the Sweet Corn Risotto. Both of us loved our dinners, I wiped my plate clean. For dessert we had the vanilla bean cheesecake and mini almond Creme brûlée. The standout was the Creme Brûlée...probably the best I have ever had. My only suggestion is to make the Creme Brûlée dish bigger...next time I am ordering 2! My teen daughter thought the ambience was too quiet but I enjoyed it. read more

Enjoyed a beautiful evening sitting out on the deck at The Kirby. Started out with the white wine sangria which was awesome. The beef sliders appetizer was tender and delicious. The chicken with raspberry sauce was cooked perfectly and the flavor was amazing. Dinner ended with the lemon cake. The staff was friendly and helped us make perfect decisions based on our preferences. We peeked inside the restaurant on our way out and the indoor dining restaurant was inviting and looked like the perfect place for an evening dinner out or a special occasion. We really enjoyed our visit last night! Stopped in on a whim on the way to dinner because we saw the sign for wine -- three hours later, a bottle of wine plus, a delicious mozzarella tomato salad, whitefish pate, and crispy salmon with amazing roasted potatoes... We were greeted at the door by Kim and she took us right to the bar as we didn't have reservations. She made excellent recommendations and was a wonderful and attentive hostess throughout the night, even while hustling between tables. Wonderful live music helped made this a great spot and we had a wonderful time! We will make it a destination on our next visit, for sure! read more

We had the absolute best experience at The Kirby! The managers, Chris and Courtney, along with the staff, were truly incredible. They all went above and beyond to make sure we had a comfortable and enjoyable stay. Chris and Courtney specifically were so great--professional but also so kind and laid back and made sure we had a great experience. We were sad to leave them! Our stay was perfect. The whole house was beautiful and modern, with large windows and a chic charm throughout. The rooms were also modern and beautiful and offered plenty of space (we were in the Martha Washington). We also had full control of the air which was great since some hotels have a set range but, we were able to make it as cool as we needed! Everything was clean and perfect. Every morning we had full pots of coffee and tea waiting for us in the hall, as well as muffins and apple turnovers. We drink coffee throughout the day and Chris and Courtney made sure there was coffee for us all day. There was also a microwave and fridge if we needed it. The full breakfast in the downstairs restaurant was delicious and fresh and we sat by the windows enjoying the sun each morning. There is also a wraparound porch and a deck out back with tables and comfortable seating and we spent time outside as well. In the evenings the first floor turns into a fine dining restaurant (J. Paul's) to the public. The ambiance was great and we were not bothered by noise at any point. We ate at J. Paul's one night and it was incredible! We also enjoyed Saugutuck and Douglas and we are planning our next trip back with another stay at The Kirby. Cannot recommend it enough! read more

We were there with another couple on the evening of Sunday 08/19/2018. We did have reservations, but it wasn't busy. This former home / hospital is Beautifully Old and is also a B & B they're opened year round. I had the Lamb Lolly Pops, tasty, but small and chewy, they came with sauteed Zucchini very good. Hubby had a Burger & Truffle Fries, ordered rare but served extra well done, dry, good Tasty Fries. They did offer to remake the Burger, but he was too hungry to wait. The other couple ordered a Pasta dish and a Salad dish and they were pleased. Yes, they did drop the ball, but we were treated appropriately. We will go back. Yes, we recommend The Kirby. read more

My friend and I spent two nights at The Kirby while visiting ArtPrize in Grand Rapids. I can't even begin to explain how incredibly helpful, kind, and genuine the staff were. We had booked a reservation over the phone months ahead (recommended) and spoke with Mindy to do so. We had never been to the area before so we asked her questions about what to do, what to see, where to eat, etc. Mindy helped us with all of the above so we could focus on the beauty of the area rather than trying to figure out where to go. Every recommendation she gave us turned out to be more than we expected. One of the other team members at The Kirby (Kim) was very helpful getting us checked in and to our room. Throughout our stay, they knew when to converse and when we'd like to be on our own - we never felt neglected or bugged too much. Each morning we made our way downstairs and selected what we'd like to have for breakfast off a small menu. The food was outstanding and the helpings were more than plenty. Everything that we indulged over the 3 Days/2 nights was excellent. I highly recommend catching dinner at the restaurant (Jay Paul's) while staying here. **(To note - breakfast is included in price per room, if you have dinner at Jay Paul's, it is separate.) **For all of you Douglas/Saugatuck visitors AND residents - Jay Paul's is open to the public! One of the nights we stayed there they had a great band come in and play ambient music while dining. I honestly cannot day enough GREAT things about everything at The Kirby. The Kirby is a hidden gem amongst the beauty of Douglas/Saugatuck. This is my second visit and it continues to exceed all my expectations. We booked again because our first visit was outstanding and we couldn't wait to get back. We booked the Tempranillo room and were beyond pleased. The room was spacious and the view out the window gorgeous, we saw three deer!! The breakfast this morning was delicious and last nights dinner on the deck...wonderful!!! My husband and I visit Douglas/Saugatuck once every year and have stayed at several B & B's. We are aware it's not cheap in this area during the summer. For one night, at over $300 for a tiny room w/o an attached bathroom, we expected more than a banana and a small bag of Trix cereal for breakfast. We expected the a/c to be in functioning order, we expected to have more than one bath towel each, we weren't expecting the hotel music to be so loud until 11:00pm, it would've been great to have ice in the tiny ice machine. I do not recommend this hotel/b&b. With so many others available in the area that are so much better, offer more, have friendlier owners and somewhat cheaper, we'll never go to The Kirby again. read more

I do not generally rank restaurants this low, but I rarely have had customer service this unpleasant. Our family walked in around 5:30pm and were turned away for not having a reservation. This would be a reasonable position if they were crowded, but there wasn't a single person in the restaurant. They essentially laughed in our face for even asking for a seat. They said they were concerned with "getting bad reviews." We had looked up the restaurant in advance and were looking forward to eating there. If they had been full, I would have been totally understanding, but there wasn't a single car in the parking lot. read more

My family and I drove up to the Kirby because we were enticed by the outer exterior beauty; however, we were taken a back quickly at the rude attitude once we entered. The parking lot and interior was completely empty. When we walked up, they refused service because we did not have a reservation - they attributed it to being terrified of a bad review. If they would have explained that they were reservation only (or advertised) I would have understood; however, the attitude and mindset turns me off. I will never return. Thanks for nothing, Kirby! THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE HOTEL not the restaurant which is J. Pauls. We stayed a weekend and were given Room #6 which is on the second floor on the southeast corner. The room was nice, fairly clean and the bed was terrific. The bathroom was really small so I'm glad I am not any larger than I am! The real problem had to do with the room upstairs. The space needs to be carpeted and the occupants aware that they can cause alot of noise. On the Saturday night of our stay, someone was upstairs dragging something across the room and then back across the room, AT 1:10AM! I thought at first it was a closet door being slid open then closed but that wasn't it. I couldn't figure it out and I had a lot of time to try to figure it out because it kept me awake until they stopped. The following morning guests were in the common area on the 2nd floor around 8:30am talking really loud. There was no respect for other guests that might still be asleep. The last and biggest problem was the service. When we arrived around 6:30pm on a Friday night, we walked into the restaurant and had to ask if someone could help us. The check in was confusing and finally my husband was given the keys. The second thing that really put us over the edge was Sunday morning we waited until the restaurant was open at 10am for our breakfast. Several other parties were there and already seated. We asked to be seated outside which was great and there were also people outside already seated. We had grabbed coffee ourselves because we didn't see our server. We waited. As did the others. Finally a young man came out and took our order. We waited. We waited over 40 minutes and we as well as the others that ordered before us still had not received our food, nor the water we had asked for. We had to be at a friend's home at 11am so we had to leave. My husband decided to go check out while we still waited for our food. He checked out, got our luggage, put in the car and came back.....still no food for us and our porch mates. Hubby went inside at the 50 minute mark, told someone we had to go and we left. The kicker is that we paid a nice sum, over $350 a night, for the room. We were to get wine and cheese upon arrival. No. We were to have breakfast. No. We were to get a night's sleep. Well, mostly. We'll look for another place to stay the area and leave our visits for J. Paul's Restaurant, the amazing place to eat. read more
