My wife and I visited with friends and were both thoroughtly under-impressed. I ordered a lobster bisque that came out with a very grainy and unsmooth texture, which is typically indicative of frozen and reheated bisques. I followed that with the crab cakes that on their own were OK, albeit a bit dry. The sauce served with the cakes, however, was loaded with curry that completely and totally overwhelmed any flavor in the crab cake. It was an awful sauce for that application. My wife's meal yielded similar results. She had a wedge salad that came out in a soup bowl that was filled with dressing. That is not an exaggeration. It was swimming in a pool of dressing about an inchbdeep. She then ordered one of the only dishes on the menu that was gluten free, a chicken dish that came in what tasted like a beef demiglas and that was served with potatoes that were simultaneously burnt and soggy. All of that said, by far the most disappointing part of dinner was the incredibly poor service. It took forever to get a server. We then had to repeatedly ask her for simple things like clearing menus and used dishes as she put down new plates. We had to ask her to stop multiple times just to order drinks, and somehow part of that order managed to come out wrong multiple times. And we waited more than 25 minutes to pay after she dropped off the check because she completely disappeared. read more

I've played some golf the last year, but not much. I guess it's a combination of weather (Chicago throws anything and everything at you), accessibility, distance and desire. But the golf I have played has not been with my own equipment; it's when I'm away and I play with rented or borrowed golf clubs. This last weekend in South Haven, MI I played with my very own gear and it felt fantastic. Hawkheads Golf Club is this no nonsense, what you see is what you get track that was just a pleasure to play. I guess just playing golf again with my own "stuff" I was familiar with the draw here. This golf course itself was in very good condition, not crowded, with a great pace of play. I really enjoyed myself here - and they make a wicked iceberg wedge salad! read more

We normally stay at the Inn but we weren't able to get rooms there. Staying out in the middle of nowhere just isn't the same ambience. For what you pay to stay here there should be a clubhouse/pool, room service. There's plenty of room but even if we were golfing it would be inconvenient. At the Inn you get a nice breakfast platter of fruit & pastries, juice and coffee delivered to your room. They don't offer that here either. If you're looking for fine dining in South Haven you only have a few choices but HawksHead is absolutely the best. Beautiful setting on HawksHead Links golf course and overlooks a portion of the Black River, in a delightful inn. The Lobster Bisque is unbelievable! And there are some really good steaks along with some creative dishes like a quinoa bowl. The staff is always polite and helpful. Stayed at Hawkshead this weekend and we loved it! The rooms are very clean and cute. We didn't have a fridge in our room, but they have a large ice machine so we just brought a cooler. The beach is only a 10 min drive, and there are wineries only 5 mins away. We also ate at the restaurant at Hawkshead one night, and the food is amazing! The hotel/restaurant itself is also in the prettiest setting. We will be back next year! read more

We have been there 2 times in the last few months with 2 different couples. The food is very good whether it is duck, whitefish, steak, salmon or sea bass, the food quality is good and it has a nice interior atmosphere and the servers are really friendly and on their game. If you are looking for a slightly more upscale dinner (still not at city levels), give Hawkshead a try. Basic new American fare which is done pretty well. Wife had a pecan crusted chicken while I had the ribeye special. Highly recommend the sweet potatoes, which has some brown sugar bruled on top. read more

We hadn't been to Hawkshead in 2 years and last, night Sat 9/29, we were disappointed. The menu is very limited and prime rib is no longer offered. I had the bone-in rib eye (Delmonico) and it was very tough, the fingerling potatoes were undercooked and the broccoli cooked so long it was mushy. The waitress was pleasant and the 2nd time she asked if everything was all right, I had to tell her how unhappy I was with my meal. She spoke to the chef, said he cut into my steak & admitted it had a lot of cartilage in it and they would prepare another steak or take it off the bill. Being that we were there for our 35th anniversary, they also said dessert was on them. Turns out just mine was, which was ok, but manager made it sound like the offer was also for my husband. We had called for a reservation at 5:30 and had no problem getting in for our chosen time of 6:30. It the past that would've been unheard of. That should've been our first clue that things weren't as good as in the past. My husbands meal was "ok", but a $39 filet should be better than ok. I dont think we'll be going back. I gave 3 stars because the restaurant was clean, the staff pleasant,the bread was good as was the drink my husband had, and they offered to make it right for me. read more

I was vacationing in South Haven this weekend with my husband's family (who go every year) and they always rave about Hawkshead for dinner. We decided to leave later in the day than we had planned in order to be able to go with them and try it. We made the wrong choice. We'll start off with the good things: Service- our waiter was excellent Cosmopolitan- I had a good one Now the not so good: My ribeye was cooked well when I had asked for medium Other guests, who ordered the filet, had their steaks undercooked 3 people ordered the Halibut and the overall sentiment was that it was dry and tasteless My salad has no dressing (not, not enough...none). Annoying. They were extremely high priced for the area and for the fact that their food was sub par. My husband and I paid close to 100 for 2 entrees and appetizer and one drink. Ruined by Lady Ranger- 1st tee and she was rude. Then she would patrol the holes by driving her cart down the middle of the fairway as we were playing. I've never seen anything like it. The day started off great. However, if you want to have a nice round of golf with a small group of friends, DO NOT COME HERE. We were constantly challenged, belittled, and questioned by the disgruntled ranger on a golf cart with a small yellow flag. He turned our two foursomes against Eachother, by saying each of our groups brought alcoholic beverages. There were numerous occasions of him watching all of us play each hole in depth, which was very disturbing. One of my favorite golf courses in SW Michigan serves terrific food. We had lunch after our round and I was impressed with my jerk chicken sandwich-- perfectly toasted roll with blackened breast, mango salsa, perfectly crisp bacon and the sauce was perfectly acidic and creamy. Eh, it was ok. I think I saw Mr and Mrs Habecamp from Caddyshack dining in the main dining room. We were on the patio, as we clearly didn't fit in on the inside. This is the upscale snooty place, and our Hello Deli T shirt and sandals did not belong. On the patio, the plastic tables and flies will do. Unfortunately, we didn't golf, so our service (1 waitress for the entire patio of 20 tables) sucked. I would have expected a little better, because only 2 other tables were occupied, and they weren't eating. Our grouper sandwich came later, after everyone else was done eating. They did offer a free dessert for the late cold fish sandwich which was plain vanilla ice cream. That is sort of how I'd describe this place--plain vanilla. Patrons--vanilla. Food--not even vanilla, maybe only the big tub of ice milk vanilla. I wouldn't bother, really. read more

Had a reservation for 1:00, didn't get seated till 1:35. Wait service was slow. Ordered the prime rib med rare. It came to me cold and tough as shoe leather with a ton of gnarly gristle. My wife's French type toast was reheated and COLD blueberry sauce added to that, yuk!!!! Best thing we had was the kids chicken fingers, and they came from a plastic frozen bag, I'm pretty sure. Hawks Head did an amazing job for our wedding! They were well organized, thoughtful, attentive and paid attention to every detail. A surprise fireworks display was the icing on the cake! We were very pleased with our visit to the Hawkshead Restaurant. We found the staff friendly and knowledgable, which is difficult to come by in South Haven during the summer months. He had a drink at the bar during the short wait for our table. The bartender was superb and mixes a tasty Manhattan. Our table was on the glass overlooking the ravine, fantastic views, felt as if we were dining in our private treehouse. The menu was impressive and the food at our table, quite tasty. Eh.... just okay. I was headed south returning from my trip to Arcadia Bluffs and flipped a coin between playing HawksHead and The Ravines. Upon arrival, I was somewhat taken back by whats actually there. The website gives you the impression that there is a pretty big complex there but it's not much. I ended up going off around 1pm after hitting a few balls and a few putts. Just for some context, I play to a 2 HCP and am pretty well traveled when it comes to golf. The toughest thing about playing a course like this is the inconsistency of the track and a lack of information. For one, the course is not well marked yardage-wise which is always problematic. But beyond that, while it has some well placed bunkers and landmarks at which to aim at, it's definitely not a course that is straight in front of you. So I spent the day guessing carry yardage, pin placements and everything else. The toughest thing to navigate on the course was the inconsistent greens. Most were rock hard but some were vastly different than the rest. Chipping was a challenge as there were not many bump and run opportunities so flying the ball through the air made it impossible to get them to stop. Even the quality of roll was different from hole to hole as some greens ran pretty smooth and others bumped along. There are some fun holes out there but again, it was difficult to hit shots close not being able to judge the first bounce. In retrospect, I wish I would've gone to The Ravines. Although it wasn't terrible, it definitely is not the most memorable track. read more
