We came here on a quiet Thursday evening in April. This was our second visit. Both times we sat upstairs. They have an impressive drink menu. I especially liked the nonalcoholic choices while my husband enjoyed the craft beer selection. Food and service were both excellent. The deviled eggs are a must, and that's from someone who generally doesn't eat them. The dinner menu isn't terribly large but what they do, they do very well. Dessert menu rotates but the pots de crème we ordered was amazing. Prices and portion sizes are pretty reasonable. My wife and I were in Douglas for our anniversary and chose this highly rated restaurant for our dinner. We were seated on the second floor in a cozy nook. Our waitress was kind. The 3 stars comes in due to a very limited selection of options, very little flexibility in drink preparation/choice, and the website did not have their updated menu. We came here for several dishes that were publicized but then removed before we came to town. For the high scale pricing, the diner vibes were a bit off putting. The food we did select was fine. Then two women next to me who had eaten near the night before gave their recommendations for the Aji tuna. of course, went with the recommendation and it was a good recommendation. I don't think much more needs to be said, but I'll set the scene... Visited on a slow winter day. Even on a Saturday, a reservation wasn't needed. Not positive what it's like in the summer with an outdoor area, but Saugatuck and Douglas are kind of dead in the colder months, unsurprisingly. Nevertheless, I don't think our experience was much different. I wouldn't say the food blew me away, but I think Borrowed Time has some of the most creative options in the area. The stuffed dates are probably one of those weirder things to get as an appetizer. We (two people) ended up getting three smaller starters with the lamb, pork belly and ramen and it was still under 100 bucks with a couple drinks. Pricing two drinks at $25 is... fine, but getting all that food for $75 is pretty good, given the variety and preparation. Usually places like this cost a little more, which is why I think five stars is the correct rating. Every dish had its perk. Overpriced and underserved. The portions look like you would find them in a magazine of weight watchers. I'm honestly not sure why someone would spend so much money on a small platter. My wife and I came here for dinner while we were Saugatuck. It's located on the other side of the like which is nice because you can actually park without looping around and around like in Saugatuck. The food was excellent. Everything we ordered we loved. This is a shared plate restaurant which was perfect even though she doesn't eat red meat and I do. I had a Kumquat Caipirinha cocktail, which was excellent, and she had wine. We started with some marinated olives and the bread board. Both very delicious We then ordered the goose egg fried rice with kimchi. Very good with just enough heat. We then ordered the grilled carrots and peppers. Excellent. I ordered the seared pork belly and we shared the Sablefish dish. Both excellent choices. I did make a reservation the day of for 6:30 on a Sunday and we got sat right away. There were many choices available that morning. We left around 7:45 and they were definitely busy which was nice to see for such a great place. Some people brought their small kids (and one dog) but as talking with my wife, we would not have brought our young kids here. Our kids have grown up but I'm still not sure all of them would find something to eat here. 1 is a foodie, another is more adventurous, and the third is a burger, mac and cheese, or pizza kind of eater. First time in town, only here for 2 days but I made a point of going to Borrowed Time twice while here. Robert, the bartender and daytime server, was friendly, knowledgable, and remembered my order when I came in a second time (lol). Service? excellent! Let me talk about the food.....are you ready? It's sooo good. I only got the one picture but I got deviled eggs, an espresso buzztini, and the duck egg fried rice (not pictured). I love a well-curated, eclectic menu. And the price was surprisingly cheap for a lakeside boutique little food place - I couldn't believe it! There's also a cute outdoor area. Personally I hate being outside and was more than happy to hang out at the bar - the vibes inside are great - but the adult outdoor playground seemed really fun! Started off with a mezcal-based drink as well as some deviled eggs which today's filling also had miso in there. The butternut squash soup had the perfect texture and was rich and creamy. The duck egg fried rice had a little Korean flare with the kimchi adding some kick. My favorite dish that we tried though was the seared pork belly. It lightly sweet from the cider braising and asian coleslaw pairing. The cider glazed carrots were wonderfully roasted and a great pairing for the rest of the more carb heavy dishes. For dessert, I went with their shared plate the strawberry tart since I wasn't looking for one profile of something just sweet. The tart had savory goat cheese which is what I was looking for. This casual wine bar features a cider, wine, beer and small tapas menu only a few steps from the water. We chose this establishment based on their great reviews and the fact that they offered an outdoor dining space with tables carefully spread out. We also appreciated that all attendees wore face masks and customers were required to do the same. During our visit they also offered live music out on the patio space. I could see this being a fun spot in the evening with the twinkling cafe lights overhead. Our small group ordered a variety of cocktails, Michigan beer and cider. The menu featured about five or six Michigan ciders. We didn't order food but the we could see on our neighbors' tables looked quite delicious. Our server was attentive and friendly. My only complaint would be that the music was incredibly loud when we first arrived- so loud that we couldn't have a conversation but thankfully, they were willing to turn it down a bit. Their menu has more of small plates than main dishes. We got the local vegetable salad with smoked salmon, crab cake, and the seared sirloin. Their smoked salmon is served in large chunks and it's pretty fresh. Their crab cake is omg. I think it's the best crab cake I ever had. The mango pieces that come with it makes it a great combination. The seared sirloin is cooked to perfection as medium rare. Very good. They give you a lot of bean and corn that comes with it. I would say the dishes are more on the pricey side for the portion of food you are getting. They have outdoor seating and you have to call beforehand to make reservations. They only hold it 10 min passed your reservation time otherwise you will lose it. They had live music that had more of a country and folk music feel. But THEN we were charge $5 per person because we didn't stay. I find this crazy! Def not a family place, or very understanding when it comes to family/kids needs. My husband and I wandered into Borrowed Time for our first night in the Douglas/Saugatuck area. We were so impressed with the food, service and drink options that we reserved a second evening. We ordered the mushroom larb, pork belly, and sweet potato dishes alongside beers. The mushroom larb was incredibly earthy, tasty deliciousness. The portion looks to be most appropriate for 2 people and I would suggest ordering more than 1 if you're sharing with 4 or more people. The pork belly was wonderful, but the star of the evening was the sweet potato entree. Both my husband and I loved this dish. From the beautifully cooked and seasoned sweet potatoes to the adorable moon shaped polenta - this was amazing! We didn't order any dessert, but there were several options.
