Started off with my usual Bloody Mary and my daughter had the Saugatuck Spritz which was so refreshing. We got the Corned Beef hash which is shredded Corned beef, roasted diced potatoes, sautéed onions and a red wine demi glaze with two over easy eggs (I got mine scrambled)....other dish is The Ordinary which is 2 eggs, choice of meat and toast. We ended up at Pumpernickels on Friday night. When we arrived we were told they could accommodate our party of 6 and took us upstairs. We looked at the menu and found it to be very limited for dinner and after about 5-10 minutes no one ever came to check on us so we left. Strawberry vodka and cucumber juice make for the most refreshing drink after walking around looking at all of the shops. The fish tacos were messy but delicious. I was hoping that during our visit to Saugatuck we wouldn't find a restaurant that would be a disappointment, but this one was it. After reading the reviews later (which I often read when I am not familiar with a restaurant but took recommendation with blindness) I realize that hostess attitude and long service wait, or feeling ignored is the rule. Our friend had recommended this place. He claimed that it was a bit pricey but good. I didn't find the prices any different than elsewhere honestly, but the service was extremely sub-par. I've been to fast food restaurants that were better managed. Upon our arrival at the host station, just as I walked up to provide our name, the host whisked away without a bat of an eye, nor acknowledging my presence, such as, "Hi, I will be right with you." It wasn't as if she was even escorting anyone to a table either. The dolly blonde just walked away and ignored me, so I felt like a ghost. We didn't have much time to spare and decided to stick around, otherwise I would have taken this as my first red flag and gone elsewhere. About five minutes later she returned and took our name. She asked for where we would like to sit, and the outdoor patio area appeared available with many tables. Apparently, there was an indoor patio area, more on this later. So, when she told me that the wait would be thirty minutes I asked her why if there appeared to be several available tables. This is when she informed me that they were short staffed. Okay, it's a Saturday night and they are short staffed, I began to have more of any understanding and patient mind. She asked for my number so that they would text me when our table came available. In the meantime, my husband and I browsed other nearby stores. A half hour later, I came back to the host station and had checked to make sure that I didn't miss a text since my phone my have not received a message. Another host this time at the station informed me that no they hadn't messaged me, but that they should have a table available soon. Then, the hostess quickly asked me if I would be alright with an "indoor patio table." Yes, you got this correctly. They had tables available for the indoor patio but apparently the other hostess wasn't aware? Meantime, we had noticed several of these bachelorette party gals walk in with super short skirts and boots (a visual, I still don't understand) and all received immediate service. Perhaps they had reservations. We ended up sitting near these loud girls in the indoor patio area. As we were seated, my husband and I ordered some hamburgers. He ordered a stout and I ordered a apple cider. Our drinks came out quickly, and we had assumed burgers wouldn't take as long. Not only did they take longer than expected, but the waitress did not visit our table to let us know anything or ask if we needed anything else. Guess whose table we noticed she visited the most? The two loud obnoxious bachelorette party tables. Fortunately, one left shortly after we were served our drinks, but the other had no volume control. It was apparent the waitress knew she would receive a nice tip from a bigger party. When our burgers did arrive they were a bit dry and lacked flavor. The fries were crispy and tasty and these were the best part from the whole experience. The waitress didn't bring any ketchup to the table nor asked if we needed any condiments. I had to locate the waitress who never returned. When I was done with at least half my burger because we needed to leave since we had plans elsewhere, I had to find someone to inform our waitress for a to go box, and even then we did not receive our bill. Typically, at restaurants when you ask for a box it is implied that you are ready to leave. Where was our waitress? She stopped off at the bachelorette table, but not ours. So, I had to go to the bar and see her there with my credit card to pay. My friend was eager to hear what we thought of this place, and was disappointed to hear of our experience. On a girls trip, we ALWAYS come to Pumpernickel, and were ecstatic to bring our girlfriends to one of our favorite spots. However, hostesses are head of house and should come in with somewhat of an inviting attitude. It was the start of the morning, we noticed several dirty tables but they were far from busy, possibly even missing the brunch rush. We were put on an hour wait, and walked to a few shops while patiently waiting. Returning to check on our reservation, the dark haired hostess, rolled her eyes, huffed and puffed that we asked for a table with an umbrella and threw 1 menu and drink menu for a table of 4. I went and asked for additional menus, and she flippantly said they were out of menus. We watched as she pushed back on business bc many ppl came to put in their names but had to wait. She wouldn't allow a table of 6 to push the patio table but then wouldn't seat them next to each other either. Idk if she was having a really rough day or a wee bit hungover, but Pumpernickel lost a lot of business that morning bc of her. Ordering with our friends, the food is ALWAYS delicious, and we hope to return when visiting, but could do without such a snarky head of house. read more

Some positives and negatives.. Food portions are fairly small and pricey, though comparable to other breakfast spots in downtown Saugatuck. We waited for over an hour to get our food, didn't have drink refills while waiting. This has happened multiple times. Overall we felt bad for the staff, it seemed very understaffed with only one servicer for the entire upstairs. The place is very cute, and welcoming atmosphere. read more

As many times as I've been to Saugatuck this was my first visit to Pumpernickels. Judging by the line out the door I knew it was probably a solid choice and it proved to be true. There was an hour wait for a table but my mom and I were able to bypass that and get seated immediately at the bar. First I have to mention the Bloody Mary's. They were excellent! I like mine a little spicy and they were able to accommodate. They came well dressed with a celery salted rim accompanied with a shrimp cocktail, smoked bacon, and an olive and pepper skewer. Almost a meal in and of itself! The brunch choices all looked so good but our bartender/server recommended the mahi mahi tacos and the crab cake eggs Benedict. The mahi mahi came blackened and tasted fresh and flavorful. I was even more stoked that it came on corn tortillas which are my favorite. My only regret was not asking for a extra side of the creme lime sauce. The Bennie's came with two expertly cooked poached eggs perched on English muffins with thick crab cakes and topped with hollandaise sauce. Also included was a generous amount of seasoned breakfast potatoes. From the service to the presentation to the taste and portion size there was nothing that didn't merit 5 stars. The Pumpernickel's that I first tried 5 years ago and the one I ate at last week may have the same name and be located at the same address, but that's where the similarities end. Last weeks visit will also be my last visit here.. and I'm embarrassed to say I've recommended this place to friends when they have visited Saugatuck. Four of us stopped for lunch. I had the avocado toast with eggs, others had the Ruben, mahi tacos and a salad with chicken added on. Every single one of us felt that our food lacked any spice or flavor except the salt and pepper we all generously added ourselves. I tried each persons meal because most of us left a large part of it, and the thing that tasted the best was the chicken on the salad. I usually don't speak up at a restaurant, but after we paid our bill I stopped the server and told her "now that we've paid, I want you to know how disappointed we were. I didn't want you thinking we were trying to get something for free, but the food lacked any bit of flavor." I hope that she took our feedback and shared it with management. read more

This place is so cute and felt very quintessentially Saugatuck! Located on a corner right in downtown Saugatuck, it's got plenty of outdoor seating and great people watching views. It was very pandemic friendly, all the tables were socially distanced, and all waiters were wearing masks. I ordered crab cakes benedict and honestly they were the best I've ever had. The crab tasted so fresh and the entire benedict was just so delicious! The only downside to our experience here was that we waited about an hour after ordering to receive our food. No one told us why the wait was so long or to apologize, but since it was such a lovely day outside and tons of people milling about to watch on a Sunday morning, we really didn't mind too much! We just happened to notice that we had been waiting for a while, but the food was very worth it! In fact, as I was eating my crab cakes, someone who had just sat down ordered the same & I overheard the waiter say they were all sold out for the day. So I'm guessing many people order these because they are truly just that delicious! I sincerely wish this crab cakes benedict wasn't so far away from me so I could get it ALL THE TIME! read more

This place is in a great location. Sitting outside and people watching is one of the perks besides the food. We were seated outside. I got their avocado toast with two eggs. The pickled onions elevated the dish. Their menu was very limited when we went. We were only able to order off their brunch menu. I'm not sure if that's due to covid. Parking can be difficult as it is street parking on a busy district. Our group has children. They definitely do not cater to them. No children's menu and a high chair was never offered. Wife took a couple bites of the crab cake and held up her hand. That means five stars. So, five stars it is. I concur. Terrific menu with a little something for everyone. We had the lobster roll sandwich and the crab cake with fries. Generous portions of gourmet. Crab cakes can tend to be greasy and have that dry crust and thick flour mixed. But, this was an outstanding crab cake. Nice spicy kick, great color and evenly cooked. Likewise, big portion of fries that were crisp and fluffy and light, not salty and greasy. Nothing more to add with the lobster roll. It was terrific. Fifth star for the value. Great price for the quality of food served. Server helped with recommendations. Would be happy to return. Stopped by for breakfast on a Saturday. The fact that it was empty when other places in town had a long line should have been the tell. The service was trying to cover for a kitchen and supplier list they knew they couldn't overcome. The breakfast menu was somewhat surprising, very limited, and disturbing (crab cakes here!?! - WTW!). Had coffee and eggs which both sounded better than they were. My friend had coffee and avocado toast. The toast looked like it was better than anything else we had. Went for breakfast with my husband- it was fairly empty and it took 10 min for the hostess to bring us a water and 25 minutes until the waitress/bartender came to talk to us and take our order. She did serve drinks to 6 others who sat at the bar after we got seated in those 25 minutes though. She also didn't seem to check on anyone after they got their food either. My burger came without the bacon I ordered (kitchens fault- it was on our check) and we had to go up to the bar to ask for ketchup. Saving grace was honestly the drinks which is the only reason I gave 2 stars. Such a shame, I remember this place being so great a couple years ago when I came. Oh, also there were cobwebs all over the staircase and plants on the table/bar area we were seated and the bathroom was out of hand towels. If we ever return it would only be for drinks. read more

First off, the venue is beautiful! It was an old house, and there are plants everywhere. The vibes are great. The wait staff is also extremely friendly! My bf and I went Friday night, and they had live music which added to the overall aesthetic of this place! We got goat cheese spinach dip as an app and they give you a ton! It's great but also very rich. I ordered the salmon and Brussels, and my bf got the Pump Club Sandwich. Both were delicious! The salmon and Brussels was extremely fresh tasting and delicious. I could love eaten two! The sandwich was peppery and you could tell the ingredients were fresh as well. Highly recommend this place! So so so pleasantly surprised!! I used to come here years ago and was never impressed. They used to have a basic menu of boring sandwiches but they have totally revamped! My boyfriend and I came here for breakfast but arrived too late so we settled for lunch. Lunch was so good we came back the next day for breakfast. My boyfriend got Pumps Parm beef and said it was "the best sandwich he's ever had". I got the fish tacos and they were the best fish tacos I've have this year. Perfectly seasoned and plenty of greens and sauce to complement the fish. When we returned for breakfast the next day, we both got eggs benedict. He got the corned beef and I got the California. Both came with perfectly poached eggs and tons of hollandaise. I wasn't a huge fan of their hollandaise but my boyfriend loved it. Plenty of seating inside and out. Plus the outside allows dogs! I really try to be understanding with poor/chaotic service, but my experience here was unacceptable. We waited at the host stand for a while, and then waited literally 40 minutes for anyone to greet us at our table. I didn't know if we had to order at the bar, but I asked and grabbed our waters. Nobody came to our table for another 10-15 minutes after I got our waters. One out of three of us got our food and we just assumed that ours would be out right behind theirs, but they almost finished before we got ours. We were trying to be pleasant despite everything, but we just wanted to eat together? They gave excuses to a point that it felt awkward for us to be there.
