    watermelon lime slushie
    Annette J.

Excellent fast casual joint in downtown Saugatuck serving up a small but mighty menu of tacos, nachos, empanadas, and a few entrees. We kicked things off with an order of the corn queso and chips and I picked three tacos for my meal. There's a lot of seafood options here and 2 out of my 3 choices fell in that category--coconut shrimp, fish and chips, and fajita steak. Of the three my favorite was actually the steak (though I'd call it more of a short rib maybe?) though all three were great. The coconut shrimp had a bit more of a kick to it than I was expecting but it was still excellent. I also LOVED the corn queso and definitely ate more than my fair share. They've got a few beer options, cocktails, beer, and a couple of NA options outside of soda including a delicious lavender lemonade and a watermelon lime slushie. I'm not the biggest fan of watermelon but it sounded refreshing so I went with that as my beverage and it was really, really, good. If you're ready to party you can add a shot of liquor to it to give it a little more sauce. Ordering is fairly straightforward. Order all your food and drinks at the counter, wait for your drinks, then grab a seat and wait for your food which they'll bring out to you. FYI the indoor seating is currently not air-conditioned so keep that in mind when you grab a seat if it's hot out. And DEFINITELY keep it in mind when the tip screen comes up at the register. They have a note saying tips are optional as they pay the staff accordingly but it was in the 90s when we were here and I can't imagine how hard it was working through that. So we definitely left a few bucks as a thank you.

This is such a great spot located right on the river. Their tacos are amazing and they have a great variety of options. Their cocktails are delicious and they are part of the social district so you can even take them to go! This is a great spot for lunch!

Really enjoyed our first Saugataco (great name BTW) run. The zero tip policy is unique and had zero (service) effect. Staff was friendly and did their best to reduce ticket times; we arrived at the end of a big dinner rush. The nacho plate is HUGE and definitely meant for two people. Hey, we did our best. Salsa sampler was fresh and on point. Margaritas were tasty and perfectly nailed all the mixing ratios. Great addition to our downtown restaurant scene.

I LOVE this place! I especially loved the sign out front that told you exactly what to do! Tacos were really great, and there were a lot of options for the pescatarians/vegetarians who do not like beans of any kind, which is hard to find at some taco places . The place was super cute and there was lots of seating both inside and outside. I would recommend this place to literally anyone!

SUCH a cute little spot. The staff were all SO wonderful, and I loved the casual, yet still well done vibes. Even though it is a counter order style restaurant, the service is still prompt and helpful if you need anything at all! The owner was working on a catering order at the counter, and he mentioned his wife was in the kitchen as the chef. We had 4 different tacos between each of us: 3 regular ones (steak fajita, ground beef, and chicken), and one of the specials, which was a poke bowl inspired dish. We both had drinks, which were strong but tasteful. While we were sitting, we noticed several people getting the 4 pack of Sauga-Taco lavender lemonade cans. I can understand the hype! I cannot recommend the food, drinks, or ambiance enough, plus it's a lot of food for the price!

Great spot to grab a bite. Nice beer selection. I went the NA route and had a tasty October fest from Athletic. We had a large gathering and it was an order at the counter situation. Grabbed the pork tacos and added some unique pico. It was heavy on delicious tomatoes and crispy cucumbers. The dips included guacamole, queso and a black bean. All were delicious and rounded out be meal. The owner was very pleasant and kind. In fact all staff had exceptional attitudes and were very helpful. There's a strict ask for no gratuity. I assume staff s well taken care of as this showed no signs of impeding the exceptional service. A deduction of a star as it seemed to be Michigan style Mexican food and not what in familiar with in California. Would absolutely repeat. Yet another bonus as much of the food arrived in compostable fashion. There was a clearly marked receptacle and most patrons seemed to understand and follow the process. A repeat stop for sure. They had both indoor and outdoor seating. A very clean establishment.

Classic tacos: ground beef and BBQ Pork

We got two classic tacos: ground beef and pork. Both were good and filled up the tummies. The beef was interesting; it was on the oily side (like it was partially dripping with oil) but I didn't mind it all too much. It definitely tasted homemade. It was nice and light, and I appreciated the care that went into it. If you are craving for some tacos, this is a good place to go to and check out! Cool vibe; there is indoor and outdoor seating. I was surprised that this place doesn't take tips (at the time I am writing this). But the working behind the counter was super sweet and nice.

    Fish & Chips Taco

Try the Fish & Chips taco!! While all of the tacos we tried were great (Mom's Ground Beef, BBQ Jackfruit, and a vegan Mushroom Fajita special), my husband and I agreed that the Fish & Chips was our favorite! The spiked lavender lemonade was really good! We enjoyed the outside seating and the service was excellent! The cashier was really friendly and helpful!

This place is an absolute gem! If you haven't been, do yourself a favor and go. First off, the black bean dip with carmelized onion dip layered on top is AMAZING. It's creamy, flavorful, and the perfect start to the meal. I could honestly eat it by the spoonful! We also had the Works Nachos and the Goat cheese and Mango Empanadas, and they were out-of-this-world good as well. From start to finish, everything was perfection. Great vibes, amazing food and friendly service. Can't wait to go again!

Our server was quick to answer questions and provide refills. Parking was tricky to find, but other than that we had a 10/10 experience!

Indoor dining in a mostly empty restaurant (outside was a little livelier, but we had reasons to seat out party inside). First order or drinks went well, it took a really long time to place a food order (thankful for the appetizer we put in!). After that, it was practically like the servers didn't exist any longer. When the food arrived, SOME of us were asked if we wanted refills, but not all? Some people got water refills but not all? Very strange. Meals were a mixed bag, with some additions or subtractions missed, many things not at a temp that inspired confidence in their freshness, and soggy center to pizzas. We didn't ask for alterations for most errors because things already took so long so we just tucked into the eats. We did, however, ask for the add-ons that were NOT present to be removed from the final bill (them being present suggests an actual error in preparation/service, not the order being taken....) Even with a great location/view, The Butler will go under with this type of dining experience. Ultimate bottom line: Like other reviews, consistency in all phases of this business needs work.

Pumpernickels is a vibe and a great place to sit a spell in the summer here in Saugatuck, but when it comes to the food, while it matches the vibe and is presented beautifully, tastes very average and is not value oriented aka on the spendy side. We came in as a party of 6 around 2pm and quickly got a table outside. Our server was sweet and kind, and quick to take our orders, but once that happened we really didn't see her all that much, which was frustrating. On top of that, the main dish on the menu that brought us here (goat cheese dip) was sold out after lunch, which was a major disappointment. We ordered the fried green tomatoes, deviled eggs, chicken sandwich (grilled), rueben, green bean salad, and a kids mac n cheese and chicken tenders. The best bites were the eggs and the green bean salad, but the portion on the salad was so petite that it was barely a meal for the person who ordered it. The chicken was dry and the sandwich incredibly generic. The reuben didn't have enough of the house corned beef and was also dry. Now I could be wrong here, but the fried green tomatoes seemed like a frozen product. with a uniform breading and cook, but the chicken fingers definitely were and the mac n cheese was quite literally Kraft. I'm going to hope that this is a hot dinner or brunch spot, because what we had was pretty disappointing. I was torn between here and the spot around the corner that featured a lot of local ingredients in a more casual setting, but chose this because it seemed to be more culinarily focused, and I was let down.
