This is a Hidden Gem! Off the beaten track, but close enough to the water, where you feel a sense of tranquility while you dine. Their menu selection is really special, and I love the story behind the tonic water that went in my Gin. It is shipped in from Spain, and only available there. What a great find! This is now one of our new favorite places to eat. A casual setting with food that will blow you away. From the barrel aged Boulevardier cocktails to each of the small plates that we ordered we were impressed with the quality and taste explosions of each dish ordered. We would highly recommend the Salmon (yes, the Salmon), the pork belly and scallops but the menu may be rotating so they may not be available on every visit. Fabulous spot! Because of Borrowed Time, I am drinking the kool-aid of loving Michigan beach towns. So often I find that Michigan beach towns have sad dining options, but not Saugatuck/Douglas. I came here with my mom last week and we sat on the patio. It was about 2pm on a weekday, so it was super quiet. The music was intentional, as was the atmosphere. Yard games like cornhole, giant jenga, and connect four are available in the lawn. There's also a small stage which I presume is for live music. I appreciate the signage that dictates the lawn as adults only, although kids are welcome in the restaurant or on the patio so long as they have a worldly palette (I may not be getting the wording right, but I loved it). Drinks: The wine list was stellar, with all categories being addressed by options you can't walk into Walgreens and find. The cocktails were also well executed and priced fairly for the quality. Our server was very attentive but also let us hang out, as he could tell we were there to relax. Food: We were animals. The menu suggests three dishes for two people, we had seven. You're welcome, because now I can tell you what's delicious. Favorites in descending order - goat cheese flan, Pesto bruschetta, wine reduction flatbread of the day, cucumber/avocado bruschetta, pork tenderloin (my mom ordered two), bacon wrapped Brussels. My mom is a picky mainstream eater who typically shies away from 'foodie' establishments. BT's menu was very approachable and I got her to try everything. She loved it all. The interior of the establishment is a bit musty/dated, but I don't think it's the type of place where you'd sit inside unless you have to die to weather. A couple bathrooms and the soap smelt bomb. Borrowed Time is like if one of your warmest and friendliest neighbors turned their backyard in to a quaint live music patio with open green space for yard games and relaxing. The vibe is soooo chill and relaxing you could spend all afternoon/evening there. Plus they always have a great rotating wine and beer list, amazing cocktails and some of the best and unique small plates I've ever come across. (1) Great service - and I mean knew the entire damn menu service, actually tried the dishes, knew the ingredients (GF/etc), super helpful. This review is based on the previous time we were here pre covid last year. I should've posted it earlier but I'm lazy sometimes. The very first time we came here it was still located in Saugatuck. They have now moved over to Douglas. It's really a cute unique establishment. I absolutely loved the presentation of the food and drink. My husband had a cocktail and I had a nice nice glass of Pinot. Moving on to the food we had these cucumber open face things and a charcuterie board. I could have eaten those cucumber things all darn night. They were a perfect pairing with the wine. The charcuterie board was also nothing less than spectacular. I wish they had more places like this back in the Chicago area. It was such a relaxed no care in the world ambience. Just wow, we only stopped by because we couldn't find any parking in Saugatuck and decided to try somewhere across the lake where it was less busy. Service was great and the waitress stopped by frequently and was more than happy to explain every dish and drink for us. Atmosphere was great and everything was clean. Now for the food, whatever this chef is being payed, he should be payed more. Everything was unique and honestly perfect. Not even incredibly pricey too. If you are in the area I am begging you to stop by you will not regret it. Borrowed Time is a gem in Douglas. They have a great drink menu and vibe--lots of outdoor seating and food that is for sure prepared with care and love. Everything is small plates. We decided to check out this gem after arriving for a weekend in Saugatuck. We called ahead to see if we could get a table for dinner and luckily they "reminded" us that we would be sitting outside. It was in the 40s, we bundled up and they had outdoor heaters so it was no big deal. Cocktails were delish, service was great and the food was fantastic. We split the fried Brussels sprouts, seared ahi, and the gnocchi main dish. Everything was fabulous!! Our B&B hostess recommended this place to us, and I hadn't been to Douglas in probably 15+ years, so we checked it out after dinner at The Southerner. It's a tapas and drinks place, but we were full from dinner so just had drinks. My boyfriend ordered a Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier, a German beer that he likes, and I ordered a Crane's Apple Cherry Cider - I love Crane's (nearby pie and apple picking place) so I figured it would be good, and it was, although a little pricey ($7). The space is pretty cool - we sat inside but they have an outdoor area as well. If I was ordering food, the bacon-wrapped Brussels sprouts looked amazing. Waitservice was good, as well. This place is a Douglas gem! We were visiting town and staying at an Airbnb within walking distance so we popped in on a Saturday night for a few glasses of wine and food. The space is comfortable with seating options indoors and outside for groups of all sizes. Everything here is small plate/appetizers, but all perfect pairings for their selections of wine and beer. They also offered mixed drinks but we didn't try any of those. We sampled two different bruschetta and both were flavorful and garden fresh. Don't miss the Caprese Bruschetta! There was also some awesome acoustic live music the night we were there, but they stopped playing as soon as it started getting dark outside. Not a full scale dinner restaurant, but this place is worth a visit to unwind with a drink and a snack. read more

We stopped by Borrowed Time this past Sunday as it was one of the only places open in the afternoon in the area. We had a lovely late lunch consisting of the meat and cheese board. It included two cheeses, two meats and a wonderful house-made mostarda served with sea salt crackers. We also tried the mushroom larb which was a unique dish consisting of fried local mushrooms, pickled chilies, roasted peanuts, crispy shallots and a fish sauce vinaigrette served in a little Bibb lettuce boat. Both were fantastic! Our favorite was the Ahi tuna served on a bed of tasty soba noodles. It was so good...we ordered three of them. Everything we ordered was delicious.
