Horrible staff experience, we called to book July 4th weekend, the initial employee who picked up seemed bothered by simple questions, had an attitude and quoted us a price for 2 nights for $1700. Was unable to get her name. Mind you we are from Indiana so of course we are going to ask about amenities and things to do in area. Called back and a manager named "Lachelle" said that we could not book 2 nights, it had to be 3 nights at $2400 and told us she was going to "Write up" the previous employee - thats information I dont need to know! This was an absolutely charming inn. Our suite (room 11) was beautiful and large with lots of windows, enough space to easily walk around, and extremely clean. The bed and pillows were so comfy and the linens were pristine. We had breakfast each morning on the back patio which was peaceful and quaint. The pool was lovely and we really enjoyed the screened-in patio. The staff were so nice and accommodating, the service was impeccable. This hotel is close enough to Saugatuck to easily walk anywhere in town but set far enough back to be very quiet. We will definitely be back. read more

The Wickwood is an amazing bed and breakfast in our absolute favorite Michigan town. The inn was restored some years ago and every room, every detail is curated and perfected across the inn. My girlfriend and I came to stay last year over the summer, and we are returning again for a few nights this summer as well. The staff, management, the chef - everyone was so friendly, helpful, and just a pleasure to be around. I rarely write reviews any longer, but after seeing some of the older (not so flattering) reviews about the property being outdated I felt I needed to contribute to help set the record straight. The Wickwood Inn was purchased by a new owner has been updated by the partners of Chicago-based luxury design firm and it shows as the property was absolutely incredible. The décor was excellent and not a single thing was needed, there was not so much as a nicked spot of paint inside that we saw. the location just right as it was close enough to walk to all of the shops and restaurants, yet just far enough off the beaten path (about 1 block off the water). The wine and charcuterie in the evening was wonderful as was the delicious breakfast the next morning. I can't say enough good and can definitely see the Wickwood Inn in our plans the next time we're in the area! read more

This place is under new management and was just renovated recently. I read some reviews with the old owner and would just recommend that these individuals give this place another try. This place is gorgeous!! My husband and I will definitely be going back. The bed, pillows, cashmere throw pillows on the bed were so dreamy. Very high end finishes throughout the property. The breakfasts were delicious; the staff was so friendly and accommodating. And a shoutout to the manager, Jeff West who is the absolute best. I had an interview for a housekeeping position here months ago, and the owner, Julie, completely demeaned me and fat shamed me. She suggested diet pills to me and kept saying "we need to get you skinny". As if a plus sized 25 year old hardworking woman can't go up a flight of stairs?? Obviously she is an older lady but seems to be completely out of touch, with a disgusting outlook on plus-sized people. I was so hurt and shocked after, it had taken me awhile to recover. I personally, wouldn't ever step foot in this Inn ever again and have told many people to avoid this place. All I can say is, what a gross and mean attitude from a "renowned" business owner and chef. We stayed at the Wickwood Inn 20 years ago and thought it would be fun to return for a weekend. We had to pay for two nights in order to secure the room, even though we could only use it for one. We were ok with that, until we stayed there. The room was so worn down, tired and tiny. Literally nothing had been changed or upgraded in the guest areas in the past twenty years, and it wasn't new then! There were two (very worn) chairs at the end of the bed and if one of us was sitting in a chair, they'd have to get up to let the other person walk by. There was a collection of dust on the fabric headboard - not to mention the dust and mold on the bathroom fan - suggests that the place needs a deep clean at the least. Beyond all this, it was SO LOUD all night. Our room was right by the front door and as people would come in after a night out we could practically participate in their conversations. The walls are paper thin. The floors above were so creaky we didn't sleep all night thanks to people walking around (who knows why but literally all night). We left before breakfast was served because it was uncomfortable and we were exhausted. We are both far more tired after our night away than we were going into it. I loved my stay here and would definitely return. The property is beautiful, comfortable, and full of amenities. Hors d'oeuvres are served from 6-7pm, snacks and drinks (ginger iced tea, lemonade, iced tea, varying juices, tea and coffee) are on hand all day, and a delicious breakfast is served from 9-10am. The rooms are beautifully appointed and comfortable, the bathrooms have top notch toiletries and robes, and the staff is friendly and informative but not intrusive. We decided to get away for a weekend and surfed around for a place on Lake Michigan. After comparing it to several B&B's, we decided on the Wickwood Inn in Saugatuck. Little did we know that the weekend we chose was the same one Hurrican Ike decided to use during his visit to the midwest! We thought about canceling, but wanted to just get away from the madding crowd and went ahead with our plans. Driving up through the rain, staying on a rainy weekend and doing some of the things we planned turned out to be a good idea after all. The Wickwood Inn is a beautiful place. We had the Kyoto Room, which is done up in a pseudo-Japanese motif, but very relaxing. The breakfasts were wonderful, with inventive dishes to tease the palate. Larissa and Nancy were wonderful hostesses and made sure we had what we needed and made suggestions about things to do in the area on a rainy weekend. I would, however, make some points about our stay to make it more comfortable for future guests. 1. Add lights around the bathroom mirror instead of just that one little above it and put a reading lamp in the room! I couldn't see to put on my makeup and there was no other lamp in the room bright enough to accommodate this, even at the vanity table. The 3-way lamps only had 1-way bulbs, which was quite frustrating. 2. Add an iron and ironing board to each room. I needed to press my squished clothes and got one of those little table-top boards - but there was no table to put it on - I had to use the bed and my back hurt after leaning over for just a couple of items I needed to press. 3. Put some new cushions on those wicker chairs in the room! My rear-end was numb after I sat down to read in the dim light for about 1/2 hour... Since there are no TVs in the rooms, they should be comfortable for reading, dontcha think? 4. Add another towel rack - for heaven's sake, if you ask a guest to keep their towels to save on water and soap, make sure there's a place to dry them before they are used again! Our towels were still damp the second day since there was no place to put them (4 towels on one rack doesn't make any sense). I would visit the Inn again, but want to try out others in the area if we decide to go up to Saugutuck again. It's pretty pricey at this place at $401 a night (including tax), but we figured what the heck, we'd give it a shot. Others in the area were comparable, but we went after Labor Day, so maybe that was a factor. Taking a star away for the missing amenities. read more

Let me get right to it... If you are a seasoned B&B connoisseur. You will be very disappointed... Then again maybe the 100+ B&B's I have stayed at are just that much better!?!? My wife surprised me by making reservations here! And after looking at all the B & B's in the area and personally knowing one of the Owners in a prior life. I would have picked this B & B as well. I felt so bad for my wife because she felt personally responsible for the not so pleasant accommodations. And it was by far the most expensive one we have stayed at in the USA. Definitely not worth the money... + From the outside it is well cared for and fairly nice landscaping + First let me say the staff was friendly and very kind - We arrived in the evening just before evening appetizers. They only serve these from 6pm to 7pm and then "Poof" gone. Not before 6 pm (we had shown up at 5:54 pm), no big deal and the Inn Keeper did still offer us a glass of Champagne which was very kind. - When we had arrived the Inn Keeper said that she would replenish the pastries which were down to crumbs. She must have gotten busy with other things... never did get to try any of those. - When we checked into our suite the Inn Keeper apoligized saying that this was the coldest room because it was at the end of the tail line and to keep the other rooms cool they had to keep it up and if we needed more blankets to let her know. My wife and I always keep a cold bedroom so this was good news! ***Bad news it was miserably hot! One of the most uncomfortable rooms I have slept in... ok didn't sleep much! - Got up and opened the door for coffee (they have a table with cups and coffee) no clean cups no coffee... dang not my day! - Ran out of toilet paper... searched for some more... really left on the floor under the sink... really? - The breakfast... Great presentation! But ...just ok nothing special. I am a foodie and had very high expectations. Not so much (except for the pastries and those are brought in from local bakery). Coffee not strong enough for me. In the end just ok... nothing special BUMMER!! I love food... I could get even more critical and I feel like the "Stand out" because so many others give it 5 *Stars! The service here is top notch as is the food. My boyfriend and I spent a weekend in May in Saugatuck for his birthday and had a great time. The breakfast buffets in the morning are amazing and you must try the appetizers in the evening. Everything is homemade! We enjoyed so much food one night we didn't even have room for dinner. Bring a bottle of wine for the evening appetizers. The rooms are pricey, but the hotel is beautiful and B&B's are pretty much all you get in Saugatuck. This was our 1st B&B experience. It was everything we expected and more. We stayed in "The Christy" room, a large suite with an array of furniture that some may think of as over-furnished but I thought charming and well put together. The common areas include a dining room, small enclosed and large open porch, and a couple rooms with a library feel to them. There is ample room to share the inn with 20+ other guests and not feel like your sharing the same space. Food was delicious with a large breakfast and hors d'oeuvres at 6pm. I've read some of the negative reviews and agree that the bathroom is small, there is no TV, and the price is high. I can't wait to return to the Wickwood Inn next summer!! read more

What an absolutely lovely experience! Very clean, very accommodating, perfectly nestled in the charm of the city, and the brunches and cocktail hours were exquisite. My husband and I stayed in the Picasso room which was delightfully chic! This was our first time at a bed and breakfast and we really appreciated the experience. Our experience was marginal. We very much enjoyed the young lady who served our party during our stay at breakfast. She was kind, polite and very pleasant. On our reservation, I noted that our daughter is under the stated required age of 12. I also explained that she is an only child and generally functions as an adult on the reservation request. The reservation was accepted. I reiterated this to the staff upon check in, just to be sure, and they stated that it would be fine. On the last day of our trip as we were checking out, the owner (Julie) stopped by, and as we were moving our bags, the owner asked, "Are you the PEOPLE with the daughter?" Mind you, my husband and daughter are Black. People? Really? I said yes, we have a daughter. She said, "I understand she isn't 12." I said yes, but I included that on our reservation request. She denied that, 3 times, and was becoming argumentative. At that point she stated that if we ever came back, we need to remember that and follow the rules. I pointed out again that we were not hiding this, given that we included it on the reservation and let the staff know, again, upon check in. Then she said, "Check out is at 11. You're late." Mind you, it was 11:15 and we were carrying our bags to the porch she interrupted us. Wow. Talk about bad customer service. The honest truth is that the food was fine, but nothing we can't make at home in our own kitchen at home. The rooms were okay, but needed deep cleaning. Certain areas, especially in the bathroom, were in need of some serious cleaning attention. Also, three of us left with strange bug bites, which we have now realized are likely bed bug bites. For the price, the Inn isn't worth it. We won't be back with the current management in charge. You can find much nicer places to stay for the same (or a lower) price point. read more

We can't say enough about the Wickwood! My wife and I stayed there to celebrate our elopement for three nights. The staff was incredibly kind, attentive and went out of their way, at every opportunity, to go above and beyond to make us more comfortable. For example, when they heard that a stylist would be coming to help us in the morning, they upgraded us to a larger suite so we could have more room to prepare. How sweet! The food was beyond delightful and we couldn't wait for breakfast every morning! We stayed one night to celebrate our anniversary. What a wonderful find! The Inn is as beautiful as the pictures. We arrived at 3, they do not allow early arrival. Staff was very friendly. The home is immaculate and beautifully decorated. It was hot and humid but their lovely backyard was still cool and quiet. It's just a few steps to the river and all the action but once you step inside you'd never know what a busy place Saugatuck is! Our room was lovely, we were at the top of the stairs and while we heard a few people entering there rooms it was quiet all night long, we slept well. The bathroom is tiny and if you are tall you will have some trouble with the very low shower head. It's an older home so that isn't a complaint just a comment. Lovely towels and plenty of them. The Happy Hour is fantastic, basil hummus, tomato jam, artisan cheese, rosé and much more. And it's one of the best breakfast's I've ever had at a B and B. Fritatta, house made sausage, fruit, yogurt, sweets, toast, juice, coffee etc. Beautifully served and in a lovely setting to eat. I know it is pricey but they really went above and beyond and we appreciated celebrating 32 years together there. read more

We were very excited to have a night away from our daughter and stay for our 5th anniversary. When the world became topsy-turvy from Covid-19, I called and emailed (before the 15 day cancellation refund timeline), hoping to not get a refund, but to shift to a later date, or to put the funds on a gift card so we could stay when things were safer. Any communication in regards to this cancellation would have been well received, even a "things are crazy, but we will take care of you. Can we get back to you in a couple weeks?" But no communication has come, after 2 emails and 3 phone calls. The message machine says they are opened April 5th, and it is now April 10th. Obviously the stay-at-home orders takes precedence. But I assume their email is working? Times are crazy, and 350$ is not an amount that our family can be flippant about. I've never left a bad review, and I hope we hear from them. " read more

Due to a family emergency we were unable to stay for the two days we had reserved. We found out enroute to Wickwood that a family member would need emergency surgery the following morning. We notified Wickwood personnel soon after our arrival and were nonetheless charged the complete amount for both days. This is the place where plain human compassion is left at the door. This B&B is top notch. This was my first experience at a B&B, and the bar is set high. The main house feels like a home. Wonderful decor, great books, nice common area with snacks and ginger lemonade. We arrived in the evening just before hors douevres. It poured rain, and we sat in the screened porch and enjoyed our champagne, wonderful food, and watched the gardens. I took many pictures of their beautiful grounds as ideas to take home. We stayed in the Kyoto room. It had comfy sitting chairs, a fireplace, and a king sized bed. The bathroom was lovely and had a great shower. Upstairs coffee service in AM was a nice touch. The food was AMAZING. I'm a fan of Julie Russo and use her cookbooks so that was just an added surprise and delight. Location is perfect. short walk to town if you like, but quiet and away from hustle bustle if you're looking for a romantic place. Overall, a very nice 5-star experience. Highly recommend. read more

Now forget everything you just read. Go stay in Grand Rapids at the Amway Grand. Buy yourself some sweet treats from Starbucks downstairs, eat in their most expensive restaurant, have room service deliver dessert to your room, and save yourself a little money! I feel I should go into a little more detail so here are some highlights from the website along with how the Wickwood lived up to their advertising: Website: "Every evening lush hors d'hoevres are served at six that highlight savories with bold seasonal flavors from around the world, including artisan cheeses and sausages, soup shots, cheese pinwheels, carmelized onion tarts, bruchetta, or shrimp and crab atop crostini." "Every evening at six o'clock, guests gather in our Garden Room and Gazebo for drinks and scrumptious hors d'oeuvres. These may include a Roquefort Pecan Tart, Baked Brie in Phyllo, Salmon Mousse, Smoked Michigan Whitefish, Saucission en Croute, Red Pepper Pesto Tart, Herbed Bruschetta, BBQ Baby Back Ribs, Individual Pizzas, Black Bean Dip and Spicy Tomato Salsa or a Crudite Flower Basket and with various dips." Reality: At six o'clock, out came one soup shot per person, a tiny and unremarkable foccacia-type thing for the four of us to share, roughly the size of a Pizza Hut personal pizza and just as imaginative----and a square of cream cheese with some cranberry something or other dumped over the top with a few boxed grocery store crackers. Wow. "lush" could only be meant to describe the person who actually thought this was suitable gourmet fare. Website: "Taste surprises continue to appear from dawn until way past dusk." -- "snacks galore" --- "On weekdays, the centerpiece of the buffet might be perfectly ripened berries and other fruit gathered that morning from the local farmers' market, served from Simon Pearce bowls, along with a selection of homemade warm muffins, scones and coffee cake. " Reality: REALLY! The berries at breakfast were wonderful. I'll give them that. The selection of "homemade" stuff was a homemade scone, that we were made aware of halfway through our eggs. Although the eggs were good (with sundried tomatoes & asparagus), there just weren't choices that we were made aware of. Husband doesn't particularly like either of the above additions to the eggs and would probably have opted for something else. The baked goods that were there at the start of breakfast consisted of a basket of storebought mass-manufactured sliced bread and some store-bought bagels next to a Sunbeam toaster. Coffee was in the other room. We were never offered more of anything. There were no snacks in our rooms, as proclaimed on the website, and the cookies that were there on our arrival consisted of nickel-sized chocolate chip cookies and a few Russian teacakes that were pretty standard fare in my book. The bedtime snack that was supposed to be some of the best chocolates anywhere in the world, were--in reality- a few common brownies roughly the size of large dice. The bowls of fresh fruit and their own special gorp turned out to be a platter with 5 granny smith apples in less that perfect shape and a deep jar of walnuts mixed with wasabi peas. The only taste surprise for me was that nothing imaginative or spectacular ever appeared. Again, WOW! Website: "each room has fresh flowers" "a generous supply of spa products to pamper" Reality" No fresh flowers. Spa products were a tiny bottle of hotel shampoo, one of conditioner or lotion...I forget which, a hotel-sized bar of bath soap, and a hotel-sized bar of hand soap. I will say that our room was beautiful and well-furnished. We got one of the larger rooms and enjoyed the fireplace, floor cushions, and seating area. The bed was comfortable and loaded with pillows. My problem with the place was simply the discrepancy between what we were led to believe we would be experiencing, and what reality was. It would have been a great experience for under $200. In fact, there was another inn we looked at that was about $150 that had great reviews. I wish I had checked the reviews before we went to the Wickwood. I NEVER would have gone. If you really want to spend $350 per night, you'd be better off staying at a nice hotel,and folding up 200 crisp one dollar bills into paper airplanes and sailing them out the hotel window to benefit the homeless. read more

The Wickwood Inn is not exactly as described on the web site but it has many redeeming qualities including a delicious breakfast. The food is served buffet-style so no one goes hungry, and there is a variety of sweet and savory selections, all of which are tasty and well-prepared. The coffee and fresh juice and the berries...wow!!! Delicious! The dining chairs are all very uncomfortable; see if you can get the rattan-back chairs with the seat cushions. The tall-backed chairs with the tiny seats are awkward and tippy. The bathroom was confusing at best. We stayed in the "English Garden". Normally one tucks the shower curtain liner in the tub while leaving the decorative part of the curtain outside the tub. Unfortunately, the liner was not waterproof so the water leaked everywhere, even out onto the wood floor of the room and under the door. I used most of the towels and bathmat to mop it up. It was rather annoying. The bathroom itself is very small and the towels don't dry on the rack overnight because of the cramped space. The room was beautifully decorated and I especially loved the lamps. However, the bed was super uncomfortable with the large ridge down the middle. Old mattress, I suppose. I enjoyed the breakfasts and the convenient location, the pretty sitting areas, and the garden, but I felt that the price was too high. Still, I would probably stay there again and try a different room. Maybe not all of the beds are like the one I had. read more

We just returned from the most restful weekend ever! We knew we needed a break from our busy life but didn't realize how much nor what a difference it would make. The Wickwood Inn will be our go-to place from now on. From the moment the door was opened and the innkeeper said "welcome"to the sad time of leaving when we were given recipes and a thank you for having stayed, every moment was perfect. Our room was clean and well appointed and very comfortable. The food was amazing including the afternoon goodies, the evening small plates and wine and the wonderful breakfast each morning. We stayed in the Villa and we were pleased to find coffee outside our door in the morning! Since it happened that we had a rainy day we spent a great deal of time inside and discovered how much we enjoyed playing scrabble.....again!
