Super fun!! I ride English and my husband has no experience, both of us enjoyed our time here. Emily was a genuine and amazing trail guide and she was very in tune with the whole group. Hunter (I believe is his name), was super awesome. His customer service was 10/10. Sweet folks doing good work and they don't buy their reviews either. They even gave some cool local recommendations.

I've been riding Western and English for decades. My son (13) my sister, and her son (12) are complete beginners. Picked this place because it was well reviewed and close to where we were staying in Blue Ridge. Was greeted by Helana when we arrived, who has a huge heart for animals and we clicked right away. I was careful to assess the condition of the horses and can say with confidence they are well-fed, healthy, and taken care of with no signs of over use or abuse from their head to their hooves. If there is any doubt, consider this--the owners horse is 27yrs old and going strong. The horses are safe for young and inexperienced riders, and the worst one did was stop and try to snack on leaves along the trail. There is a fair amount of up and downs, but that's just the terrain. Not one horse slipped even a step the whole hour. However if someone was very scared or little, I'm sure they would gladly do anything to make them comfortable, like walk through the pastures. They give lessons as well, so their horses are truly well-versed in inexperienced riders. If you have not been on a trail ride, know that the stable will get the horse completely ready for you to step into the saddle and go, and take care of everything once you step off. Hunter was the best guide I could ask for, and was safe and very attentive to all of us while seeming to not have a care in the world and talking about the area. He was here to in Blue Ridge and knows every back road and mountain trail,--including hidden waterfalls and places only locals know about, so ask for his recommendations. On top of their beautiful trail rides, there's a petting zoo area that you can hang out in as long as you want. They have goats and their babies, two donkeys, and when we were there, baby ducks! You can buy a bag of their feed for $1 and you will be very popular. But I didn't. I just went in and pet everybody, and they were happy to get some good back. As a trail guide myself and someone cautious around horses and over protective of their family, I would absolutely recommend this operation and will definitely be back if we are on the area again.

An amazing experience from the moment we stepped out of cars until we drove away. The staff, the horses, the owner and the gorgeous scenery are just phenomenal!! A girls weekend and an fun adventure to add to our memory books. The owner....AMAZING! The front staff...AMAZING! Hunter, our guide--- AMAZING!! His humor and love for what he does is evident in the stories he tells, the jokes he shares and he ensured we all had smiles on our faces the while time -- he's definitely a keeper! The horses...AMAZING!! The sweetest and gentlest creatures that made you smile and feel confident/comfortable on your ride!! Thank you for a wonderful time -- we'll be back for sure! Highly recommend this place!

Visited Blue Ridge for the weekend and decided to go horseback riding last minute! Super accommodating and very friendly environment. Love the cat and dog that greet you when you come. Our guide was really nice and informative letting us know about the property. The horses were great and we had a great view going up and down the mountains.

Absolutely amazing trail ride on beautiful horses with friendly, knowledgeable guides. Caleb and Tyler were great guides that were patient and helpful. Great for beginners and experts alike. The trails were beautiful and the view at the top was well worth it. Parts of the trail were steep but the horses did an amazing job and handled the paths gracefully. Caleb did a great job guiding the group. Highly recommend this excursion when you're in the area.

While on vacay I took my 10 and 16yr old to experience horse back riding. According to my 10yr old this was the highlight of the trip. He was the youngest one of the group and was behind the instructor the whole time. They did the 1hr tour and he learned how to handle a horse. The ladies here were all so wonderful and welcoming and the price was excellent! Thank you for the memories.

We had an amazing time! We received a warm welcome from Tristany and Lilliana. As they picked out the horses for us they gave us a background about each one. The barn and the horses are beautiful! Lilliana was an amazing trail guide. She was funny, interactive and great with the kids all while making sure we were safe and understood the uphill and downhill instructions. She made the trail ride a relaxed and entertaining experience! We couldn't have asked for a better time. The trail itself was gorgeous! Mountain views, creeks, streams-- all in a beautiful wooded area. Thank you for an amazing experience!

We enjoyed a nice one hour trail ride with our guide Andrea. It was a very pretty trail through the woods with lots of varying terrain and creek crossings. The horses were calm and well mannered - easy for our novice group with kids. The zip line course was closed for maintenance, but we were only planning to ride horses anyhow. At $35 per rider, this place is a good value with nice scenery. Be sure to make a reservation.

My husband and I decided to try this out in our last day here in the mountains. It was a little tricky to find but if you follow Waze you will find them. Both of us have not been horseback riding in quite awhile and they made this a great experience. The trail goes up in the woods and winds around. The leaves were changing and there were some good lookout points. I rode on Barbie and my husband rode on Mike. Both horses were fabulous. Our guide Caleb was great and made sure to check on everyone during the ride. We both had smiles the whole time! We highly recommend!

One of the best horse riding adventures I've ever been on! I couldn't believe the incredible Mountain Views! We went through creeks and learned fascinating information about the land. Our horses were very sweet and well trained! Our guide Hunter really made the experience one I will NEVER forget! If you are within an hour of this stable, PLEASE make the drive! You will not regret it!

After driving 4 miles on a windy/steep road you arrive at the barn. There is an intro with instructions before you get on the horse but it is very faced-paced and there is no chance to "meet" your horse or practice your skills before taking off. Our guide quickly introduced herself but we didn't get any interaction with her, it was all fast-paced. The guide did remind us throughout the ride of relevant instructions. I did the 2 hour trail ride, it was a good amount of time and very peaceful. My horse was Redjack and he was the last in line of a group of 7. He liked going at his own pace but would respond when I instructed him. Being last in the line made it difficult to hear everything the guide said. Before we attempted trotting she gave us quick instructions and I felt very insecure once the horses took off on a trot. Once we got back to the barn the next group was getting ready to go out, it seemed kind of like an assembly line. The check-out afterwards felt awkward where the guide took our payment, she did not act appreciative when I left a tip. They have a sign at the checkout where you can get a discount if you leave a review so I would suspect this has inflated their amount of 5-star reviews. Overall the ride was nice but I did not leave feeling like I had a good customer service experience or got any interaction/knowledge from the guide or interaction with the horse other than riding it.

It's been a while since I've been on a horse and this was the first ride for my kiddo. Before I forget to mention the barn is equipped with helmets if you would like one which is so awesome! After filling out the paperwork they give a brief tutorial before your ride on how to stop/start/ guide the horse to do what you want which was really helpful. The horses were so sweet and gentle my daughter rode Simon, I rode Rusty, and my husband got Bella. The trail was great a little narrow at times between trees but the horses definitely kept us on track and going smoothly. My husband ended up getting the sweetest horse who loved to stop every couple of minutes for snacks so every time we looked back he was a bit behind us lol! It made for a great moment that we will remember and laugh about for years to come! Our guide was very knowledgeable and great with my daughter who despite being nervous beforehand rode like she had been riding her whole life! Proud mama moment for sure!! Their barn cat greeted us when we got back and was all purrs & brushing up against our legs such a little cutie (check out the picture). We got to meet all of the other horses and fed our horses a treat in their buckets after the ride! We had a fantastic time and we really enjoyed the horses and the beautiful scenery! Some people fell, got pushed around by their horse, etc. It was a mess. The trip did not seem planned at all. Our lunch break was just us getting off the horse and eating while standing by our horses in a very narrow trail. Not to mention it didn't seem like either of the wranglers have been on that trail recent enough to remember it. The horses were very nice, they just didn't seem to listen that day and it seemed our wranglers couldn't do anything about it. With more organization and planning the trip would have been fine. In my opinion, there should have been planned stopping points and more communication from the wranglers to the riders throughout the trail to check on us.

I went and tried the horse in person and he was exactly what I wanted in a young horse. Curtis held him for a week for me until I returned back home and then had him delivered safe and sound. He is settling nicely in with my herd and has maintained the same chill demeanor each day. I can't wait to see what adventures we can do together! I think Curtis runs a great operation.

After researching for months, we finally found what SEEMED like the perfect "beginner-friendly"…read morehorse. Upon arrival at A Step Above Stables, the horse looked potentially injured, though I thought maybe it was just resting its hind leg. Until, during the demo canter, it started to buck. They called it on that horse and we agreed to look at another horse the seller had. This one didn't seem to have immediate riding problems--though they didn't demo it in a ring, which might have revealed deeper issues. This second horse would be $1000 more than our original budget of $15,000 -- he said he was going to sell it for $17,000 but was going to "meet us in the middle" to be fair. I (wrongly) assumed this horse would have the same training as the other, given they were supposedly trained by the same people and similar in price. We were also told there was a lot of interest from other buyers and to get started right away to secure this horse. We placed a $2,000 deposit that same day, with the balance due (and paid) on Monday. The seller sent a video showing the horse not spooking at a leaf blower or chainsaw sounds, so we felt somewhat reassured about its temperament. But from there, things started to get shaky: We asked for the bill of sale, coggins, and vaccine records before the horse was delivered. The seller promised to send them with the horse; instead, only the coggins arrived. He eventually sent the bill of sale via messenger--but it wasn't completely filled out. We were told the vet records would have to wait until Monday because the vet office was closed. Delivery day came and the horse was delivered to the boarding facility (a 3 hour drive from the seller) without a halter. The hauler nearly let the horse loose on the property. Thankfully, our boarder intervened. But it was obvious that something as basic as haltering this horse was a serious challenge, which is likely why the horse wasn't haltered before being put on the trailer. The horse then turned its hind toward our boarder--a classic sign of aggression or discomfort. She alerted us right away of everything going on and documented things every step of the way. After she finally managed to calm the horse, she took photos of its condition. She noted Conformation issues, A noticeable problem with one leg, a scar near the joint on the same leg We immediately contacted the seller, who claimed he was unaware of any injury and told us to inform him of the vet's findings. Only at this point did he hint at an "exchange-only guarantee," something he never mentioned earlier, even when I had outright asked about his guarantee and he had said, "We guarantee all horses for 30 days." NOT "We allow exchanges for 30 days." When the farrier and vet visited, they confirmed: The scar on the back leg was an old, unattended injury that would affect the horse's ability to be ridden safely at more than a walk. The coggins form failed to disclose the scar, which should have been noted per the form's requirements. The "vet" whose name was on the vaccine records turned out to be mostly a dog/cat vet. They said they'd only administer vaccines if the horse was brought in, which never happened. The seller apparently buys vaccines from that vet and administers them himself--yet made it sound like the vet was personally involved. We later learned the vet had expressed concerns about this horse to the seller, and the seller's response was, "That will be the buyer's problem." Once we asked for any or all of our money back, he ghosted us. In all honesty, I own my part in this: I didn't know what I didn't know. That's exactly how I got taken advantage of. I was initially swayed by positive reviews--but later realized those were mostly for the trail riding service this seller operates, not for his horse sales. Enough negative reviews exist about his selling practices to show that this is a pattern. And lastly, I did not sign anything stating I was purchasing this horse "as is"--so we do have legal grounds to pursue.
