I rented kayak at Blue Ridge Mountain Kayaks yesterday and did the 3 hour, 6 mile paddle,(no release from dam when I launched). The weather cooperated and it was a beautiful day. The staff was so nice and helpful and answered all my questions. I have rented kayaks many times before, mostly in Florida, so a river with any rapids at all was new to me. However, they showed me the route on a map with great landmarks of where you will be in relation to the time of the trip. Then, they gave me a smaller version of the map with a lanyard I could hang on my neck. This was very helpful and first time I had ever had anyone provide that for me. Also, the kayak was very comfortable. I've had back issues and sometimes get really sore lower back without a special cushion. However, this boat's seat was extremely comfortable and I had no back issues at all. The boat also tracked and paddled well. Chris was waiting for me when I got to the pull-out and helped me get my gear and self out of the boat. (I'm 72 years young). While paddling, I encountered a couple rocks where the boat got hung up, but was able to step out and free the kayak and get back in with relative ease. Be sure to bring a good drybag. A great paddle nonetheless and I would highly recommend this outfitter if you are seeking to kayak the Toccoa River. read more

I booked a self guided kyaking trip with this awesome outfitter today for my Mom's 70th birthday. We arrived early so got to get on the river early. The staff were nice and knowledgeable. They helped me get in my kayak with my dog and then helped my Mom get into hers. The Toccoa River is mostly a calm river, with just a couple little rapids and sometimes a current picks up a little. My beagle friend enjoyed riding with me and got to swim a bit too. Mom saw a beaver. We both saw a family of geese. It was a beautiful, seamless experience kind of day! Husband and I booked the self guided 6 mile trip on a whim, and were down the river in the next few hours. Extremely friendly and helpful staff / owners, who obviously love what they do. The water was high, so it took us a little shy of 2 hours to get to our end point. Wonderful views and peaceful float! The "rapids" are not bad, and could easily be done by a teen. Younger children may have trouble controlling in the current. They pick you up and bring you back safely in a bus, as you depart from where you park. Bathrooms and changing area are provided and clean! Highly recommend for everyone who loves the outdoors and serenity of floating down a river!! 10/10! You won't regret it!!! read more

You'll have a great time here if you're Caucasian. First impressions of BRMK were that the owners were nice enough and had cute dogs running around. That is about the kindest thing I have to say about this place. Our kayak was fairly sturdy and there was no issue with functionality. My boyfriend and I did capsize twice into the river, but that was our own doing. My issue with this business is when we arrived to the shuttle pickup point at the end of the kayaking route. We obviously arrived soaking wet after capsizing and were excited to get back to the car so we could get dry clothes. We were told that each group follows their kayak. So once your kayak was loaded on the back of the shuttle, it should be your turn to board the shuttle. To our dismay, our kayaks were loaded onto the shuttle and one of the owners then proceeded to handpick the Caucasian kayakers around us; contradicting his own rule because we were African American. We had arrived there long before the other customers. I questioned the owner on this decision reciting his rule back to him verbatim. He gave a B.S. excuse and could not even look me in the eye as he did so. Probably because he couldn't believe it himself and knew exactly what he was doing. He then told us the next shuttle would come back within 15 minutes. I'm sure you could predict by now that we were not on that next shuttle. In fact we saw THREE shuttles come and go before we were "allowed" to board. We proceeded to wait 2 HOURS for our shuttle in sopping wet clothes. The workers were so nice, but we did the short trip and were a little disappointed. It was only maybe a quarter of a mile and you basically just kayaked back and forth for two hours. It is NOT one that you kayak and they pick you up, you just go back and forth. However, the workers (primarily the younger kids) were extremely friendly and easy going!! read more

Such a friendly staff and a great day spent on the river! We brought our own kayaks and as soon as we pulled up one of the guys who worked there came out and took our kayaks off right away. And they were there to pull us out of the water on time and did all the heavy lifting. Plus the shuttle back to our car was clean and I felt safe. Highly recommend! read more

We have used Blue Ridge Mountain Kayaking a number of times to make runs down the Toccoa. This time we stopped in to see if they had space for us to rent one kayak and put in our two personal kayaks. They had space for us and they were easy to work with. They helped us in and out of our yaks and even carried our two yaks to our vehicle upon return to the office. Their equipment was clean and they followed the state guidelines for Covid-19. FYI...at this time you are required to wear a mask while traveling in the bus on the way back to their office. Only place open for kayaking on a beautiful 45* April morning. The owners were so nice and helpful and we had the river all to ourselves (because we were crazy for kayaking in 45* weather of course). Several low spots where we got a little stuck, but made the trip more interesting. Took about 3hrs to complete 6mi. Highly recommend this place! read more

My husband and I went this past weekend and were GREATLY disappointed! The river is very shallow for most of the trip; and LOADED with huge underwater rocks. I can't even tell you how many times we were stuck on rocks FOREVER, trying to get ourselves unstuck. The whole time we were stuck and trying to free the kakay from the rock we were stuck on, the kayak was on the verge of tipping over. This river is not meant to be used for kayaking! All of the other places we have kayaked, were very busy with people kayaking and tubing; this place was like a ghost town and we found out why the hard way! read more

Excellent kayaking when in Blue Ridge. Folks were helpful on the phone, helpful as we got set up with the kayaks and detailed with their instructions. You out in at their shop then head down the river for 6 miles. I took my three sons - age 12 and 10 had their own kayaks and my 5 year old rode with me in a tandem. River had some slight rapids, nothing technical. Perfect for a family outing. Trip took approximately three hours. read more

The folks here were nice. However, we told them that we were beginners, and they assured us that the Toccoa river was smooth and easy to navigate. We were made to sign a waiver that said we understood that safety is the company's primary concern. I've since realized that a waiver that is designed to protect someone else is all the proof you need to know that as a concern, safety falls someplace below concerns about avoiding legal liability. The water here is too swift for inexperienced kayakers. A strong, healthy, 18-year-old boy who canoes often and boats in the ocean regularly lost his kayak and struggled to get back aboard, only to find that a crucial plug was missing and water was able to get inside the hull. Two adults trying to rescue him got caught in a tree at water's edge, lost their kayaks, and nearly didn't have the strength to rescue themselves. We honestly believed that we would drown. There is no way I'd ever return to do any kayaking on the Toccoa river. The water is just too swift for safety. The lack of rapids is supposedly a sign that the river is safe, but it most certainly is not. If you go in the water -- and as a beginner you will -- be prepared to struggle. It's worth noting that the design of the kayaks here are more suited to more experienced kayakers. Although these are sit on top models, they are far less stable and more unforgiving than other kayaks we've used. Nothing at all wrong with the people or the equipment here, in our experience. The real issue is with the speed of the water and the style of boat, neither of which is appropriate for a beginner. We kayaked the six miles from the Blue Ridge Mountain Kayaking put-in at the Lake Blue Ridge dam to the pull-out near Curtis Switch with a group of six individuals. Some of us had never river kayaked and some had a bit of experience. We are all retirees. The owners suggested we try it the first time before the water level increases from the dam release. We followed this suggestion and had a great time. There were a couple of places to navigate due to lower water levels but overall the difficulty was appropriate for beginner kayakers. Next time we will go with the higher water levels. Some of our friends have done this and had no problems whatsoever. As with all water activities, you should be able to swim and have a level of comfort in the water. Most of us wore life jackets just in case but nobody ended up in the water at any point. read more

Wonderful group of folks with excellent prices, friendly service, and quality equipment. Three of our group members chose to tube and 5 of us kayaked. Of those of us choosing to kayak, my buddy brought her own kayak, and my sis and I each had one of my nephews (ages 6 & 9) in tandem kayaks. Our tubers rented an extra tube for a cooler. We had a terrible experience with Blue Ridge Mountain Kayaking. They gave my husband a kayak with a broken seat. He got off the river to try to fix it and we could not wait as the dam was open and the water was swift. I called the office and they said they would go look for him. He tried to fix the seat and ended up falling, and finally got back in the water and the seat broke again causing him to flip. He made it to shore again. He flagged down another kayaker who happen to be an employee of Blue Ridge Mountain Kayaking who was off and enjoying the river. He said my husband should have never been given that kayak. He called the office and gave them the address where my husband was and was told someone would pick him up. The employee took the kayak leaving my husband on the river bank waiting to be picked up. I called back to see if they had found him and the owner told me that my husband was offered a new seat and refused to go back in the water which was untrue. Myself and our two teenage boys get back to the office and my husband is not there. It's been two hours. They never said a word. I had to ask them if they were going to help me look for him. They finally did offer to go down the river and look for him but wanted me to wait 40 minutes to call the police. I called the sheriff's dept and explained what happened. That we were from out of town and I needed help finding my husband who was stranded on the river bank. They were sending someone to my location when my husband called. After waiting for 1 1/2 hours my husband found a house and explained what happened. They offered their phone for him to call me. He gave me the location and I picked him up. We called the owner and not once did they say sorry or even offer to refund the fee for his kayak which was broke. We returned the life vest and oar. We vacation here at least twice a year and we always kayak in the summer. We will NEVER use Blue Ridge Mountain Kayaking again. But we would like to give a shout out to the employee that was off that tried to help my husband, Billy and a shoutout to the Sheriff's Dept! read more

My friend and I, who are fairly new to kayaking, brought our own kayaks with us to use. We put in at the launch area and took the 6 mile trip. The river was cold, clear, and beautiful. We were advised to keep in the middle of the river so we did. The river ran fairly swiftly (3 mi per hr) but we had no trouble maneuvering our kayaks. We arrived at the put out 2 hours later. The people were there to take us and our kayaks back to our cars. Excellent experience. Would definitely do it again. read more

This company embodies the friendly, laid-back spirit of Blue Ridge and the surrounding area. My wife and I did a simple, couple-hour float on the Toccoa on a sunny afternoon in May 2015. The owners put us in a boat, gave us some visual distance cues, and were there to pick us up at an easy take-out where they said they'd be. It should be noted that the Toccoa, while beautiful, can have a range of conditions. Being reservoir fed, it's very cold and can go from lazy to high & swift within 10 minutes of a dam release. Water levels and river conditions are always changing, so make sure you call ahead and get the scoop. Dam operators don't always post schedules in advance, so sometimes the BRMK guys won't know exactly until the morning of. read more

Great experience kayaking with these folks on Blue Ridge Lake today. We made our noon reservation the day before for two single kayaks, at $30 a pop, which ain't too shabby. We saved 15% by switching to Geico, but that was a long time ago. We actually saved 15% at BRMK as well, by presenting a coupon, coincidence? I think not. Look in the little magazine advertising local establishments and you'll find this mini coupon of proportionate savings. A nice old dog greeted us upon arrival, then one of the owners. She was super sweet, friendly, and got our paperwork taken care of quickly. The owner was nice, too. We purchased two bottles of water for two bucks, and then it was off to watch them load up the kayaks and gear; I kinda felt lazy watching her and her small son do the heavy lifting while I rested my 40-year-old weary bones. Her hubby soon showed up and drove us to the landing where our two-hour adventure commenced. Nice guy he was, too. Blue Ridge Lake is a peaceful, relaxing place to kayak. They have a river option, too. Kayaking the river takes about three hours, we were told. We'll try that next time. They're really close to downtown Blue Ridge, our kayaks were near brand new, and their customer service is top notch. There's a sign advertising farm fresh eggs too, so I inquired. I'll be picking up a couple dozen tomorrow morning for $8. These are some good folks, and I'd highly recommend their business. read more
