My most frequented stand at Findlay Market. Cash only. My favorites are their amazing english muffins. You've never had an english muffin like this...They're huge! So fluffy and soft, if you put some butter and jam on that baby in the morning you will feel like you're being hugged by bread. I also really enjoy their almond croissants and their sunflower bread loaf. Honestly all of their seed breads are really good. Get here early if you want to get the good stuff because they'll run out around lunch time on the weekends. They also come to the Hyde Park farmer's market in the summer. read more

Have been buying their bread since I moved to USA from Germany in 2013. They have been providing consistently fantastic bread and I cannot find a better variety anywhere else. Germany runs on bread, we have bakeries at every corner and eat bread or bread rolls for breakfast, lunch and supper. Moving to US was a huge adjustment, as the simple cardboard square toast (no offense, but c'mon) doesn't do it for me or my Wife. The day we found out about Blue Apron was a game changer. What sets them apart from many other good small artisan bakeries in the area is the quality of the dough. Most other bakeries offer sourdough varieries, and while I like it from time to time, it is not what I am used to on a daily basis. Blue Oven has a wide amazing portfolio and many varieties with seeds that I love. I am so happy they provide to most farmers markets in the area and Jungle Jims, really convenient. My all time favorite is Seedy McSeed, a true winner. But I also find country French and Almond Oat delicious. From time to time I buy their sweet variety, apricot walnut is my Wife's favorite. Um-mazing! Just moved to Cincinnati and discovered this bakery at Findlay Market. The best focaccia I've ever had...so tender and flavorful. I've tried two of their scones: spinach-cheddar and pear-ginger. Both had crispy, craggy exteriors and a tender interior crumb. Can't wait to try each of their offerings in the near future! For example, today they offered three flavors of "sliders" (pizza, cheeseburger and jalapeño jam-cream cheese). They're enriched buns stuffed with whichever flavor one chooses. The early bird catches the worm. At Findlay Market, the early bird gets to pick which baked good she wants to eat before all the other greedy worms come and eat them all up. Gosh, worms sound like horrible people. If you get there by 815, you'll have your pick of breads and croissants. The croissants are what I live for. If I were a stronger-willed person, I'd get to BOB before the crowd does. Unfortunately, my Friday night self burns the midnight oil a little too often and Saturday morning self can't get it together. One magical morning, I finally got to lay eyes on all that BOB has to offer. I had the almond croissant which had a flaky crust surrounding a delicious almond center that was just sweet enough. The Italian loaf was perfectly crusty with a soft, light center, and was the perfect accompaniment to my forays in Findlay Market. Pro-tip: Come early. Come hungry. Bring cash. The best bread in Cincy, especially for Europeans like me :) I was desperate to find some 'proper' bread, as I could not take the local sweetish bagels or this artificial white toast thing. Heard about Blue Oven, went to Findlay market to try it and it was love at first bite ;) It is well worth the 6 bucks. My favourite is Ten Grain, but I am happy to bite into anything they have. So, I've been wanting to try "traditional bread" for a long time. I researched places in the area that baked bread using sourdough starters, and this was one of them. Although not every bread they have seems to be sourdough, so when I spoke to the workers I asked them which ones were going to be a more mild bread and had the fermented sourdough starter. The workers seemed confused by this question and advised me it was all natural, which didnt really answer the question. I was in line with others behind me so I went with the suggestion of country French. It was good and I expected a thick crust but aside from eating it with olive oil or alone there wasnt much else to be done with it. The crust was extremely hard, so sandwiches were out. Overall, the bread had good flavor but I'm not sure their products are for us. read more

I'm currently having a love affair with Blue Oven's spelt bread. First time I tasted it, I could not stop thinking about it. It has a mild sourdough taste and is chewy in the center with a tough crust. Never had spelt bread before, so this was eye-opening. Afterwards, I discovered that it's PERFECT for making "grilled" cheese. Well not exactly grilled--I just cut two thin slices, pop into the microwave with a slice of Monterey pepperjack for 30 seconds and bam, baby: cheesy goodness with a spicy kick from the sourdough + pepperjack combo. The porous texture of the bread soaks up the cheese like a sponge without letting it seep through. I could eat this all day and feel good about it. If you haven't realized already, Blue Oven is quite simply manna from heaven. Get the spelt bread. Get the Bad Girl (my longtime favorite). Get the Olive Fougasse, which actually has bits of olives in it! Heck, try anything and everything. I dont care where these people are..I will follow them to the end of the earth. Period. The croissants are fantastic as are the English muffins. I get them at the Northside Farmers Market and Jungle Jims. Yes, $4 a pop for a croissant may seem expensive but do it. You will definitely thank me later. They are buttery, flaky, and just YUM. The almond croissants have an almond layer inside and an almond bark thing on the outside. I would choose one of their almond croissants over a piece of chocolate cake. And that says alot because this girl loves her some chocolate cake. Speaking of, they do have chocolate croissants. They are good but the almond are my favorite. Their pretzels are great as are their breads, rolls, and buns. The regular croissants are great to use to make turkey sandwiches, chicken salad sandwiches, or good to just eat plain. Plain. All by yourself. Tucked away where no one can see you eat it in like 4.697 seconds. No shame. Absolutely NO shame. So, customer service. Lots of places have a great product and crappy customer service...or vice versa. NOT THESE PEOPLE. Their customer service is second to NONE. I regularly stalk them on facebook and Instagram. Ive gotten lucky a couple times and theyve held things for me (as to make sure they didnt run out before I got there). One time, I got some croissants at Jungle Jims and they werent as fresh as they should have been (I blame JJ for this issue..NOT Blue Oven) and Blue Oven went out of their way to make this right for me. So I never ate bread with any of my meals. I thought - the stuff at the store is just not that good. Oh man, what I was missing. Blue Over Bakery is as good as it gets. They have sweet loaves, savory loaves, croissants, english muffins and a variety of seasonal specials. You should prob get a savory and a sweet loaf when you go. It's delicious. It is a bit on the pricier side ($5-8) but it's worth it. Needless to say I eat bread ALL the time now. This is an update to say that Blue Oven is still the best thing to ever happen to the United States of America. Because we, as a nation, have always had sources for good bread, but never great bread. I want to write about some major changes to Blue Oven. They've expanded to croissants and pretzels. I've only had them a handful of times because it's not easy acquiring either at the Northside farmer's market. I'm a pretzel addict. I like American soft pretzels as much as I love an authentic Munich pretzel. Blue Oven's is a perfect mix of the two. Not quite as dry the German variety, but close and super addictive. However, I was not a big croissant person. And if I did buy one, it was always a chocolate croissant. But that was only because I had never had a real croissant until now! I wasn't aware of my croissant addiction until a recent farmer's market. I had limited funds to splurge on carbs (because I'd never eat veggies otherwise). And there was only ONE soft pretzel remaining as well as many chocolate croissants. Much to my own surprise, when it was my turn and that singular pretzel remained, I bought two plain old croissants. THEY ARE THAT GOOD. They are crispy, flaky, chewy, buttery and moist all at the same time. And while they are never quite as good as the day you buy them, I've enjoyed them thoroughly three days after the fact. Oh and occasionally they have savory croissants. The one time I chanced upon them they were filled with some potato/bacon mixture of amazing. Really...you can't go wrong. But if you happen to be over thinking it, just buy yourself a plain old croissant. You will never regret it. read more

We haven't been to this restaurant yet, but we definitely plan to esp. trying the bread from Blue Oven Bakery! I wish I remembered what the bread was called, because apparently it was selling quick on the Sunday we came by at Findley Market! None of us had cash, so one of us raced to the ATM to get some before that last loaf sold out! I wish I knew what the name of the bread was called! It was seedy and salty on the outside while the entire loaf had a sort of coffee color to it. Anyway, it might be just a fine that I don't know the same, because I want to encourage you to go and try everything they've got anyway! I know I plan to! We went to the location in Findlay Market. Located at the far end near some outside tables. This location allows for the rather long line that was forming. I was with a baker, and he said the angle of the slits coupled with the amount of air pockets in the baguettes showed a good amount of skill on the bakeries part. The baguette also had a nice outer crust. We were enjoying it as is. The sample table had one slice of bread left, so we tried that. Not sure what it was. No card to explain what was being sampled. I know it was a sourdough of some sort, but it had many characteristics of a heavy wheat bread. Firm crust, with a chewy, soft inside. It would make a great accompaniment to soup. I understand there was a line, but I felt rather rushed. No chance to ask about the breads as other reviewers have mentioned. It was more of an order, pay, next vibe. A bit on the pricey side. While the bread it good, and good quality, the higher price will make it a bit of a rarity for me. read more

Findlay Market is a weekly ritual for my husband and I, and Blue Oven Bakery is a weekly must. If you like fresh-baked bread (and who doesn't?) you won't be disappointed here! After having sandwiches made with slices of their Bad Boy bread I may never eat grocery store white or wheat bread again. Blue Oven has a great variety of brick oven bread - from french bread to salted rye or seed-covered sourdough - they have it all! Our favorite is the Bad Boy loaf, which is a whole wheat sourdough covered in various seeds and salt. And by the rapidity at which it sells out, we're not the only regular Bad Boy customers! We also love their whole wheat english muffins - which are perfect toasted and covered in honey for breakfast or an anytime snack. When this placed first opened you would have to be in line first thing if you did not want them to run out of your favorite bread. They are that good. They now seem to make more each day so you don't have to get there quite as early but they still sell until they are out. This place has kept to it's roots and focus on what they do well, making delicious and fresh bread. Definitely worth stopping by a market to get a loaf or two. Don't forget the English muffins. Delicious bread!! I have loved Blue Oven for years and realized I needed to review them. Every bread I've tried has been delicious. We recently went to Findlay and discovered their "toast bar." This is a wonderful option for a good and cheap breakfast. I chose a rye topped with cream cheese, salt, pepper, olive oil and greens. The bread was seedy, dense, and flavorful. What can I say about this place that hasn't already been said? This bread is hands down the best bread I have ever had anywhere in the world. Their loaves are superbly crafted using local grains and slow baked in brick ovens, just the way bread is supposed to be made. Their repertoire of loaves is sure to satisfy any of your bread needs. My ultimate favorite is Apricot-Cranberry-Walnut which is just the perfect combination of flavors with the most amazing texture of chewy and crunchy mixed in. If you're on the look for a versatile loaf try the sunflower seed or the 10 grain, both are delicious and can be easily used for both savory or sweet meals. CONS: This is a cash only establishment. Their lines are long however once they start selling they do move fast with the downside being that your favorite loaf might be gone before you reach the front of the line. TIP: If you think the loaf will last longer than 3 days, slice the bread and store it in ziplock bags in the freezer/refrigerator for longer shelf life. They also take orders ahead of time, make sure to place it a week before for the Hyde Park farmer's market or a day before at Findlay. read more

By far the best bread I've had in Cincinnati. I feel bad for other bread companies trying to sell when Blue Oven is at a market because they can't possibly make any money. I've had to wait over forty-five minutes in line in 90 degrees, but it was worth it. Extraordinary stuff. Like many of you, we don't do bread for the sake of it any longer. It's a luxury, an accompaniment to specific dishes that needs to be worth the carb bomb. With the apparent passing of Shadeau, Blue Oven has become the best bread makers in town in my estimation.
