We've gone to the Blue Max for years, the food has been up and down,.. five stars today for the improvements from previous years. They must have a new chief 'cos it's quite good. Worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant. First, we ordered appetizers and drinks, it took me asking three times over the course of 30 minutes to get a water for one of my kids. 30 minutes after ordering our food our waitress came to us asking for clarification on an item (she was confused that we ordered two kids' corn dog meals). She came back a few minutes later and asked about the corn dogs again. We asked if she had put our order in yet and she said the kitchen was really backed up, so she hadn't placed it yet. We told her we wanted to cancel our order because we could not wait all night for our food. She cancelled everything and came back with the bill for our drinks. She double billed us for them and had to go correct that. One of the two appetizers we ordered 45 minutes prior showed up while we were paying our bill and she did not charge us for it. The kids devoured it because they were so hungry. On a positive note - the bartender stepped in and gave us a $15 gift certificate for our troubles and one of the owners was apologetic once he found out about our issues. We spoke with a couple sitting at the bar that ordered pizza. The pizza arrived burned and they were remaking one for them. Our table clearly was not the only one with issues. This place was not busy. Two tables inside, two people at the bar and six tables on the patio. I would hate to see what a busy night looks like there. Hopefully the owners can figure out staffing and find some experienced workers - if not, it's time to change the menu to burgers and fries. read more

We love the Blue Max! During our trip to the area to visit family this summer, we ate at the Blue Max basically every other day. It's a very laid back environment, but that's part of the charm. There's some good variety to the menu, and their fried cheese bites are to die for. Maybe avoid it when it's super busy, if you're in a rush. But if you have some time to kill and some fun people you'd like to just sit and talk with over yummy food, the Blue Max is perfect! read more

Bar of my youth! My grandma still frequents this place. I've always gotten a kick out of how they call it a "resort." In this part of Minnesota "resort" means "townie bar." You ain't finding beds or bass boat rentals up in this joint. I have fond memories of the claw machine (I've still got piles of cheap stuffed animals from that thing somewhere) and the same giant old jukebox that's been there since before I was born. You're not going to find fancy beers around here. Maybe a Michelob Amber Bock if you're lucky. That's pretty darn exotic. Drink your Bud Light or your Jack and Coke and STFU. The food is good! Really! Home cooking. Salad bar. If you're lucky to get there when they've got chicken and dumplings, hit that up. read more

I can't get over how bad our experience was today. We are in from Texas visiting family who moved to a house less than a mile from here. We thought it would be a great experience for 10 of us to go have breakfast here. When we walked in a table of 8 had just paid out and there was one booth with 3 people. The waitress told us to grab a seat and literally threw some menus on the table and told us it would be a bit until she could get to us so we should start looking. When she finally came to take our order she rushed us, asked annoyed at any questions we had and basically were treated like a imposition. The family that lives near here assured us that normally the waitress were really nice, accommodating and friendly. Apparently the day we went those were all off and we were left with one of the rudest I have ever encountered (and I worked in food service before so that says a lot!). While we waited for our food two more tables came in of 3 or less people. After waiting for over an hour and watching those tables not only get their food and eat.... and leave we were still waiting. When we asked the waitress if we could at least get the kids pancakes she said "sorry, but when you don't make a reservation this is what happens. The grill is full so you just have to wait". Are you kidding me?!?!? If she would have said the magic words it could of unruffled some feathers ..... like "I'm sorry..... or Thank you for waiting or can I refill any drinks....." ANYTHING would have been better then her rude responses and ignoring us. The food did arrive a hour after we placed it with nothing else said by the waitress. Did I mention we sat for 20 minutes just waiting on drinks..... ? What should of been a really sweet family breakfast turned out to be a joke. The food really was good but the entire thing was ruined by a waitress who shouldn't be in the service industry. We have all agreed that next time it will be worth driving to go somewhere else. I am sad that we are leaving our Minnesota stay with this bad taste in our mouth. I hope for our relatives sake that live near here they find better service to go with the good food. read more

Decent fish fry. A bit of a throwback in that they serve popovers with your meal. Large bar area. Nice lake views from the dining room.

We were hopeful with new ownership the food, menu and service would improve but it didn't. Great view of the lake but not worth the bad meal and service. We'll stick with Eagle's Nest and Island Lake Inn. read more

We went to dinner on a Saturday night at 6:30pm. The place was packed. Two waitresses were running their buns off. I felt terrible for them. It took us about an hour to get our food. The food was less than average the atmosphere was crowed, loud and dirty. I normally enjoy bar dining from time to time but this place was not somewhere I will go back to. read more

Blue Max has a wonderful atmosphere and great friendly staff! The food is wonderful! Newer owners have really taken this place up a few notches! The home made Pizza is probably the best I have ever eaten! Great Drink specials and Friday night fish fry is best in town! One thing not to miss is the sunset view from this place, nice summer night out on the patio overlooking the lake with a cocktail is truly a wonderful and romantic setting. read more

Great food and service. Fish is fresh, well prepared and outstanding. The burgers are also are large incredible.
