Came here after a hike and it was exactly what we needed! They were very busy so it took a while for our food to come out but it was worth it. They had both indoor and outdoor seating which was nice. Definitely recommend it if you are in the area and are wanting a sandwich

New go to when I'm in Penn Valley first time I came here my partner and I split a carnitas torta became absolutely obsessed came back two days later got another one to split and a chipotle chicken panini to split both are phenomenal choices. This place is a must if you're in the area. A lot of seating options staff work quick lines don't stay long and food comes out quick

The food at blue cow deli makes me dream of going back to the blue cow deli for more! The salads are so delicious, all of them, but I favor the Chinese chicken salad, and the spinach salad with fig & walnuts is healthful and tasty, with a tahini type dressing. People really love the paninis here and I concur: the best is one with pesto and grilled chicken, among many choices. They brew their own delicious hibiscus iced tea, it's fulfilling, with no caffeine. And have I mentioned, the staff is wonderful? The sweetest, kindest people run the place, everyone there! I highly recommend this award-winning sandwich spot in Penn Valley, the Blue Cow Deli.

This place is awesome!! It was my first time here and was happy to see vegetarian (and can be made vegan) options. I brought my own bread (special dietary restriction) and asked if they'd be able to it for my sandwich. They did have gluten free bread but were happy to use my bread which not all restaurants are open to and it was so kind and so much easier than getting a sandwich and transferring all the ingredients to my own bread. They were so so kind and fun to talk to, telling my friends and i about the town as we aren't from the area. The sandwich was delicious even after a 2 hour hike in 90 degree weather!!!! 10/10

Ask the Community - Blue Cow Deli

I love this place so much but was wondering if they had any gluten free bread options that you could substitute? I would like to bring someone here but they are celiac so unsure if that's an option? Thank you!

I wish I could give you an answer! I did not really pay attention to gluten free bread but I'd imagine they have some option for your friend. If you are able to, I'd recommend you give them a call.

The online ordering system was not working - it balked at payment - so I phoned them and ordered that way. On the day, we got a pile of plastic bags each labeled with our name, and inside mine I found my hot sandwich, still pretty warm, inside a foil wrapper. Mine was the Italian melt, lots of different kinds of meat plus provolone and a little onion and pepperocini and a mildly spicy marinara sauce lightly dabbed in. It was not too thick but nicely dense, as well as delicious, with a well chosen mix of ingredients. I didn't want too much bread, so I ordered it on marble rye, and that turned out to be fairly thin, not overwhelming, and also strongly and delightfully flavored. I'm not ordinarily big on deli sandwiches - I don't think they have much else - but this was a major find.

Stopped here at around 1:20PM on a Sunday, and it was moderately busy…read more Really friendly staff, family owned (I think) and a good amount of seating inside. There is a bathroom that you must ask for a key to. Once 1:30 rolled around, I was excited to try my sandwich given the great reviews, then came 1:40, then 1:50, and I did not have my sandwich until around 1:55. I worked in a sandwich shop for 3 years, so I know sometimes a wait is unavoidable and can recall dealing with rude customers, so I did not approach the staff regarding the wait. They were trying their best to accommodate the orders. However-- 35 minutes for 2 sandwiches, I think, is a little excessive. In the end, my sandwiches were spectacular, genuinely well crafted, and met (maybe even surpassed) my expectations. When I got back to my car, I noticed the worker (owner?) gave me a full sandwich despite me ordering half. I wasn't sure if this was purposeful as means of saying "our bad", or just a mistake, but I will say it left me in better spirits. If you have some extra time to kill, with friends etc., this is a must try. However, if you are on ANY sort of time restriction, I would not recommend stopping here. I'm sure this is not always the case, but as a stop on a long drive, I did not consider an extra 45 minutes for a sandwich. If the owners are reading this, I truly mean well and hope you know a long wait is a sign of success. Growth is inevitable!

Stopped by this sandwich shop on the way up to Apple Hill. Saw the Yelp reviews and looked…read morepromising. It's basically a walk up in a small plaza with some tables. Cute spot. Definitely good for people watching. Got a couple sandwiches: Banh Mi - seeing the list of ingredients I was excited for this one. Never seen a place use lap chung in banh mi. The sandwich itself was kind of underwhelming. First of all, it's not on a French roll. Because of this, the moisture from the slaw soaked the entire bottom bun, making it difficult to eat. Also, the lap chung was slice into small coin sized pieces, rather than lengthwise, which means it all fell out when you tried to eat the sandwich. All the ingredients inside pretty much masked the taste of the sausage so you really didn't get the taste. I didn't get how this was supposed to be a banh mi. Honey Walnut - this was ok. Kind of standard honey walnut. In theory this sounded great but it's a tad rich and needs something to cut through it. There were a ton of other sandwiches and maybe we should've tried others but for the two we got it was just alright.
