I've said it before and I'll say it again... stop rushing shoppers out. We just left and the guy yelling over the PA system at 7:35 pm that the store will be closing in 15 minutes has to stop. Firstly, you close at 8:00 pm, which is ridiculous. The doors were halfway closed impeding people from leaving and coming into the store. I also don't mind bagging my own groceries, but the guy who rang us up did only that, leaving our things on the conveyor belt as he just walked away. Who are you hiring? We've shopped at SPD for 32 years and we have always preferred it to anywhere else in town, but this nonsense is getting old. Do better. read more

SPD is a local market serving mostly Nevada City and parts of Grass Valley I suppose. The market manager told me that the focus is being friendly to customers or something like that (as I was inquiring about a job). The problem is that the locals know the cashiers who often are getting into conversations with customers that last anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes or more, even when they are serving a customer (like me). And they do this oblivious to the people waiting in lines. I have been in lines where a cashier is talking like 5 minutes while I am waiting to get served. So if you want to exchange pleasantries , fine but having a social conversation and ignoring other customers. Sorry, that's bad service. I do not come for personal conversations and if I did, I would arrange to meet the person for coffee to catch up. read more

Went there a couple weeks ago and a woman and I were standing waiting for service at the meat counter,she looks at me and says what's that dripping all over the meat,and I looked and I said I don't know. We asked one of the workers behind the meat caser why is that water dripping all over the meat inside of the case?Oh, he says it's just defrosting . Defrosting on the meat?!?!? Me and my friends had came there from school and I had bought stuff about four things. I bought gum and three drinks for me and my friends. Me and my friends left. We planned on meeting up again back at SPD. My friend was not there after we went inside and looked around for her. So we left and went to her house to see if she was there. She was not so we went back to a SPD and she was there and we hung out and I how do use the bathroom so we went to the bathroom, and someone had told us to come out not nicely and it was the owner and he had told us to empty your pockets, and when we didn't have anything, he got mad and told us that he is tired of watching us from the cameras and said that he's tired of watching us touch stuff and not buy anything when I had bought stuff that exact day. He told us he did not want to see us again in his store, and that he does not want us to come back yet. Keep in mind I have not been in that store since last year when i was in 7th grade. Today was my first day back coming to the store and I was not treated nicely at all. I think they should start treating their customers nicely because it was not very fucking nice of him to tell me and my friends to not come back after I have not been in the store for months, and he banned us. I feel very disrespected and he did not give a valid reason for me to be banned.The owner is disrespectful and mean and I will continue to go to the store until I have a valid reason to be banned because looking around and touching stuff, seeing what I want to buy isn't a valid reason to be banned. I've been to this store may times and they have met my family because we've moved near and used it as our grocery store since I was 7 ( I'm 13 now). recently I've been told I was not aloud to the store because of me and my friends only going there 2 times in one day. They were not nice about it and didn't give us a warning and I've never gotten an offense since I am a respectful nice kid (or Atleast try to be). We came here for some supplies as we are camping in the area. This place sells everything you can think of. The meat department is packed and the butcher's know what they are doing. I have no problem with the market itself, quality of produce and meat/butcher counter is good. My complaint is the rude, arrogant checker at the Nevada City store ("Tom"?). This is the 2nd time I've been in his line and both times he was very unfriendly. I wrote it off the first time to "maybe he's having a rough day" but I think he just shouldn't be working in a job situation where he deals with the public. Unlike every other store in the area where cashiers and baggers go out of their way to say hi, thanks, have a good day, etc., he doesn't acknowledge the customer in any way. This time around I bought a nice prime rib and veggies/dinner makings for Christmas which this moron proceeded to roll/bounce down the counter towards the bagger. (The roast was unwrapped/packaging torn when I took, it out of the bag at home and a few other items were bruised and mushy.) I left the store and then noticed that he hadn't given me a receipt. When I returned and asked him if he gave me a receipt (thinking it could be at the bottom of one of the bags) he said "you didn't ask for a receipt" in a rude tone. I said that I didn't know I needed to ask for one and it seemed like he felt it was common knowledge by the way he reacted. Apparently my asking for a receipt was causing him a great deal of effort, more rudeness towards me at that point along with condescending attitude towards the bagger. I like to support the "neighborhood" businesses but I think in this case I'll be taking my business elsewhere. read more

Our favorite grocery store. Excellent butcher, great deli, good general selection of groceries. Also a nice local feeling place. They have a lot of interesting specialty and local items hidden away here and there; Bubba's Bagels, Sierra Sweets toffee. Finally motivated to write a review by an experience I just had where some equipment malfunctioned and I got overcharged. I noticed the problem and went back in and the manager handed me a cash refund on the spot, no hassle, no paperwork, just "yes we made a mistake let me fix it". They have my favorite alcohol (hard to find Drambuie), marsala wine (for chicken marsala), bread (garlic sourdough), snacks (too long to list), shampoo (tea tree), meringue cookies, you name it, they have it. Very rude woman working in the deli, complains to the customers how tired and overworked she is, horrible scowl on her face, looks like she's would make a model cast member in the Stephen King movie. Never friendly unless the one man who works there happens to be on the same shift - then it is like the strange case of Jekyll and Hyde - where in his presence, she can't stop flirting and giggling and joking around with him and in the most "delightful" mood. Kind of spooky. Watch out if you come in the store while she is alone in the deli and he is on a break or has a day off - it's not a pretty sight. Sort of like Glenn Close from Fatal Attraction - on a bad day. Do yourself a favor and try to meal plan in advance before ending up in this potential horror movie star's domain. read more

One day I was really early for a Nia class I was going to take in this area. I had been told to go to SPD on McKnight because it was on the way back. I would have had to have gone after class all sweaty and cold (it was winter). But since I was so early I was driving around the neighborhood and found this store tucked in behind the brewery. It is huge. I am guessing it is THE store for the entire area because it has EVERYTHING. Camping gear, fishing gear, ya know the essentials? It has a BEAUTIFUL produce department. And honestly that is all that I have purchased here. The organic section is twice the size as the organic section in my "regular" grocery store. The whole produce section is always well stocked. This past time I was planning on going to a class up there I purposefully didn't bring all the veggies I would need so that I could pop into this store. It is clean and well stocked. read more

This small local supermarket has been in Nevada City for many years, and despite the size they have an impressive variety of unique merchandise. It isn't uncommon for them to have things I cannot find at other stores in town. This store does tend to be on the pricey side, so I don't due the bulk of my shopping here simply due to my meager budget. But I don't mind coming here if I only need a few things or want something special I can't find elsewhere. In addition to groceries they also have a decent variety of housewares, hardware, reading material, camping supplies, and many other items reminiscent of an old fashioned store from days long ago. The meat counter is awesome, and I have never noticed it smell weird like a couple of other reviews stated. I also had to laugh at the out-of-town reviewer who complained they couldn't find their way around the store. Isn't it *normal* to not be able to find your way around an unfamiliar store?? That's hardly basis for a complaint. Everyone who works here is very friendly and if you have alot of stuff, the bagger will often help bring your bags to your car without even asking if you want help. Who else does that anymore? You can also buy stamps and send off your mail at this store, hence avoiding the annoyingly busy Nevada City Post Office. read more

A reasonable grocery store that carries all of the staples PLUS locally made yummies, PLUS an amazing deli?! I would move to Nevada City for this market. I found myself looking for food in Nevada City and the restaurants along the main street were a little stuffy for my current state of being. So I went off in search of a deli and I came across SPD and the huge "Deli" sign outside the building. What they hey? Let's give it a shot. As I headed to the deli, in the back of the store, it seemed like a normal grocery store with the usual offerings. After placing my order (a veggie sandwich on sourdough) I started to look around and see the awesome. The case in front of the deli had local vegan tamales, a veggie coconut curry made by a local catering company, a huge selection of cheese and meats, local sushi and so much more. Everything was reasonably priced and, had I brought a cooler I would have taken it all home with me. The veggie sandwich was the best I've ever had. It was stacked high with cucumbers, peperoncino, sprouts, avocado, tomato, lettuce, cheddar, and pickles. OH, their pickles were crunchy delicious! It was a $6.00 sandwich that would have been $12 in Reno, definitely a deal. Even came with a cute little bag of Lays. On the way out I grabbed some organic beef jerky for $6.99. $6.99 for a decent sized back of jerky! That's worth going back for alone. I am already planning my trip back with multiple coolers so I can try it all...and get another sandwich of course. read more

My favorite market in the area. Some of their prices are a little bit higher than chain markets but SPD has great specials, interesting foods and an easy going atmosphere that make up for it. Okay, Okay, I'm a little biased because my dad worked there for over 40 years, but still, this place is great. It has that perfect touch of small town charm where everyone knows your name, and usual business. I love their produce, deli, meat dept., and salad dressing aisle the most. So much to chose from.
