I'm a huge advocate for soil health, and their regenerative walnuts are a masterclass in what happens when you treat the land right. You can actually taste the difference, it's not just a snack; it's high-quality fuel. I ended up spending quite a bit of time there just appreciating the transparency of their process. Beyond the walnuts, the entire market is a treasure trove: The Meat & Produce: I was struck by the selection of properly raised meats and organic produce. Finding proteins raised with this much integrity is rare, and the variety of healthy eating choices made it easy to load up for the week. The Nursery Finds: I didn't expect to be scouted for my garden, but I saw some of the prettiest Japanese maple starts I've ever laid eyes on. The health and structure of those starts were stunning. The Saturday I dropped by, they were selling produce, frozen fish, flowers, plants, nuts, baked goods, breads, kettle corn, artisan soap, honey, and jewelry. Some of the vendors were... Thao Ranch of Galt, CA: This small family run farm sells fresh produce. Some of the offerings were fresh dill, sweet snap peas, carrots, red onions, squash, leeks, beets, chard... some other items I can not remember off hand. The produce looked all so beautiful and were vibrantly colored. The carrots, beets, and onions still had their green tops on. Fresh. Plus they sold flowers. Beautiful bouquets of fresh flowers $12-15. Huge full gorgeous bouquets. Professional looking. Grateful Bread of Fair Oaks, CA: I was ecstatic to see their booth. I use to live near the bakery (an actual bakery where they made the goods right in the shop). I would drive or bike on over, my faves were the muesli bread and olive n feta cheese loaf. They have some of the best bread I have ever eaten... mmm. They were selling baguette (sourdough and French), cinnamon raisin bread, jalapeño n cheese bread, muesli bread, slider rolls, dinner rolls, cinnamon rolls, coffee cake, banana nut loaf, burger buns, ciabatta rolls, cookies (chocolate chip, peanut butter, oatmeal raisin) and a bunch more. These are all fresh made and not chuck full of preservatives like store shelf bread. I bought a bag of a dozen slider buns $5. Chick's Kettle Corn: Good stuff. Fresh made kettle corn straight from the kettle. He makes it earlier in the day and bags it. I bought a small bag $6. Nature's Nuts: The owner sources the nuts from Ripon and Modesto farms. I spoke to him for a bit. He is quite engaging and quite knowledgeable about nuts (nutritional value, storage, flavoring). No BSing.He sold walnuts, almonds, and pistachios in the shell sold unflavored or flavored. I bought a bag of 8 oz honey smoked almonds. Yum! I was able to sample. The walnuts were so fresh and had an excellent sweet earthy taste. Pat's Pastries: Home based business selling baked goods. Irish soda bread, whole grain bread, chive n cheese biscuits, zucchini pineapple bread, pumpkin ginger bread, gluten free pound cake and zucchini bread... were just some of her offerings. Malik Brothers: They sell various flavors of papadum, chips, rotis, and naan. Each come in a variety of flavors. Roti is a flatbread, made from stoneground whole wheat, originating from India. It's really nice walking through before it gets too crowded, and the popular vendors will still have your favorite items if you get to them early. We like to bring our dog and walk through the market and then walk through Midtown and Downtown and it's so fun to grab a drink, get a few ingredients for weekend meals, maybe a snack and support local. There's a good mix of farm fresh produce and flowers, some eggs and meat options, baked goods, dips, condiments, and seasonings, plus shopping like clothes, gifts, jewelry, and even house plants. Honestly, this market has a bit of everything. Live music- yeah they have it! I can see why it is so popular. I really got a sense of community walking around to the different stands. I love the variety; not just a bunch of stands selling the same stuff. Everything from fresh fruit, veggies, meats, cheese to artisanal baked goods. Everything looked so fresh! It was my first time at the market so I had to pace myself. I did end up getting a variety of goodies. Fresh pressed apple juice, black berries, asian pears, ribeyes (the big splurge), etc. It is very busy so I had to park a couple of blocks away but the walking was good for me given everything I ate, bought and sampled there.

These are kiddos are now in 10th, 9th, and 7th grade. When we first moved to Davis, the Farmer's Market was our religious Saturday stop. Popsicles from Fat Face, tamales from Montoya's were always a staple. As well as apples from "Apple Steve" always happy to give a sample and a big smile and just felt like instant community. While camping at Molokoff Diggins Park, we realized we'd forgotten a few things. We asked the Ranger where the nearest store was, and he directed us to a little market up the road. When we arrived... it was not exactly what we were looking for. Sure, they had the basics, but nothing that warranted the price, and also no ice. This was a problem. So we asked where the next closest store was, and we were directed to Mother Truckers. "It's an old hippie stop but they probably have ice," was the description we received. Okay.... After a short drive up the road, we arrived. Nothing special from the outside, and it definitely looked like the hippie stop we were told. When we walked inside, and my life changed forever. Organic produce and freshly baked cinnamon rolls greeted us, along with a selection of gluten free breads. As we looked further, we realized we were in the world's smallest Whole Foods Market, with tiny prices to match! There is an excellent selection of beer, organic produce (seriously, have you ever seen a sunchoke? I have now!), bulk foods of every variety (garma masala, anyone?), chocolate bars from around the world, a wide dairy selection including almond milk, and a million other things you didn't know you needed. They even fit a healthcare aisle and a clearance section! I was in heaven. I was ready to move my tent and just pitch it right outside. Cooler heads prevailed, however, and after taking a thorough tour of every aisle of the market, we picked out some goodies and headed back to camp. I grabbed veggie chips (the kind that are actual dried veggies), a Kombucha, and some almond milk for the morning. And of course ice. The next day, we came up again just to snag a few more treats.
