I always get my steaks here whether it's a cowboy steak or a couple New Yorkers! Always fully staffed and fresh! I also love their deli. I picked up one of the best triple cream cheese I have ever had which went well with the garlic sourdough round I bought! ( See my receipt for the name of the cheese). I think it was called Cambozola. Bit pricey but worth it! Love this place with many long term employees! Good deals on alcohol as well! read more

Why would you wrap organic limes, lemons, potatoes etc., with a sticker that contains chemicals, around each individual item . seems like an expensive cost for labor. You could probably price organic the same price as your other produce..... also the sticker makes the produce go bad. This seems like the biggest waste of time. And putting the most non-organic thing you could around the organic product . read more

We asked for 2 sandwiches, and to get 3 stars stamped. The server laughed and made a joke about it. This is a NO NO in customer service. DON'T make customers feel bad because they know something that you don't. Particularly if they come for sandwiches a lot. Secondly, the roast beef, again, has a sour taste. Been shopping SPD for years. Best meat and deli in town. The prices are a little higher, but that makes the line shorter. I might be addicted to the cowboy cut rib steak. Man, those are good. The SPD potato salad is hands down the best store-bought tater salad I have ever had. When I come off the mountain, I don't want to go past Grass Valley. SPD market is a small, local feel grocery store in Grass Valley. They carry a lot of local and smaller brands, which is great, and have a nice meat selection. We purchased a variety of their in house made sausages from the meat counter, and grilled them for dinner. They seemed to be of good quality, and were a special treat for us while visiting the area. They're fairly well stocked, and overall have everything that you need in a grocery store. I only take one star away because their prices on certain items were above market rate, and I chose to pass on certain items I would normally purchase because of that. read more

I told my partner he had to come to this place because we have IGA's back home in Ohio. He was skeptical but this store proved him wrong. Not only did they have amazing variety but also fresh bread from the Truckee bread company and the butcher had an outstanding line up of fresh meats. We got what we needed and had a nice time in the store. My partner makes the most amazing tacos and even does the shells homemade for the crunchy style. I went to the packaged ones when he said we needed shells and might have been a little bit of shock when he saw that I would buy prepackaged instead of making my own. Ohio girl things. Luckily, he taught me how to make it like they do in the restaurant and even got me onto the spicy taco seasoning. I did some see Midwest Danish style cookie brands there and it made me feel like home. The lines were poppin' but it did not take long to get through. the service was awesome and friendly just like you would expect at any IGA. The prices also cannot be beat. read more

I will NEVER set foot in this store again! If I could give 0 stars I would! I guess you don't put customers first! I bought dry cat food on 11/17/25, I fed it to my cat the morning of 11/18/25 two bites and she threw it up, so this morning I went to exchange it or get at least a credit! BUT the unprofessional so called "manager" who was confrontational with me wouldn't budge, not even a store credit! He had NO personality; he should not work with the public! come on SPD get it together!!! read more

Absolutely not the lines were extremely long today they did not pay attention when checking out they were not quick fast they don't know how to bag. It was so slow today at 3:30. They had no Braggs apple cider vinegar in the large what's going on I walk out of there and it's an $80 bill for 15 items that weren't supposedly high Did not purchase Any meat nor produce nor alcohol no cleaning products or other extras! I just got home from SPD I purchased a sandwich there from the deli and it was not good at all I asked for a sourdough roll with salami and all the fixings and I got home and whenever I took a bite of it the bread fell apart it was dry and flaky so the bread was old and the pricing of it 3 weeks ago I paid $5 and some change and we could go I paid $5 and some change and today I went and it was $7.49 it didn't say that they were on sale the last weeks so I don't know but I was very disappointed in the sandwich read more

More than just a grocery store. SPD's connection and involvement with life in Nevada County is evidenced by their continual community support of worthwhile projects that benefit everyone, even if you don't shop there. SPD also hires the handicapped and disabled, which requires extra management attention but they do so gladly because of a commitment to the community. It would be hard for me to justify not shopping there, if I could live locally again. SPD is First Class. read more

I like SPD Market! Especially the one in Nevada City. They have the most choice in meat and protein. The quality is quite good and prices are ok. Deli was terrible experience! We ordered several platers of sandwiches for a Memorial reception. Sandwiches were ordered on croissants. When we went to pick up the sandwiches were NOT ready! We were told to come back in an hour (The exact time that the Memorial Service began) When we returned the sandwiches were on regular buns..no applogy other than we are short staffed! This was an.order that was placed weeks in advance! So how is this my problem I thought?? Anyways food was late tasted sub par! We will NEVER use the deli for event food Ever again! Way to F. How can the Deli Dept continue to be so inconsistent? You can never get your deli meats cut to the right thickness. You can also not get the desired amount (they just cut the meats anyway they want and if they're busy they short you on how much you asked for. Lately there seems to be a lot of new help who are not being trained at all. I am tired of having to throw out expensive deli items because they taste so bad. I am going to start returning items (maybe that will get someone's attention). read more

Price and quality: They have a really nice produce section, and the prices and freshness are better then the local "chain" super markets. The meat counter is awesome. The general selection also pretty good given a store this size. Having a small USPS PO in the store is super handy, too. After reading some of the previously posted negative reviews I just want to say... I've been shopping at SPD at McKight for many years now. During that time I've only noticed a negative attitude a couple times - but, hey, we're all human and everyone has off days but, that being said, I've never experienced anything abusive or over-the-top. That being said, I've worked with the general public back-in-the-day, and there is nothing more challenging then dealing with each other as neither a good mood or clear communications are guaranteed. So, my heart goes out to the the SPD staff and management for what they must deal with on a regular basis. Please consider our current situation with the pandemic: these folks have stayed on the job and will even bring your food order out to the car to you if needed. That shows concern from both management and staff. As far as I'm concerned they have a customer for life and I applaud their silent courage and friendliness in the face of life threatening adversity. I am so over EVERY business in this town closing earlier and earlier. SPD used to stay open until 10:00 pm, then closing time changed to 9:00 pm, which was disappointing, but tolerable. This evening, we ran over to SPD at 8:20 pm because we needed a few things, and the store had closed at 8:00 pm. Come ON! This has gotten absolutely ridiculous! There is a lot of online misinformation stating that SPD is still open until 9:00 pm, which is frustrating. I love the store, but it doesn't do those of us who can be there early in the day any good. I realize that Target just opened, but they have snacks, they are not stocked with decent groceries or a meat counter; not that I would have gone grocery shopping at Target, but you've effectively given your business to them. We hadn't planned to grocery shop at Target on principle, but you've forced us to. This has got to be one of the least sound business decisions you could have made, especially since warmer weather and longer days are imminent. We would have gone to SPD in Nevada City, but BOTH stores are now closing at 8:00 pm. It's so disappointing that SPD, a longtime favorite in this area, can no longer serve the whole community. Everyone says to "shop local," but businesses in this area make it increasingly impossible. Shopping for groceries in this area is already difficult enough. We are regularly forced to hit up at least two different stores to get everything we need. Now we're forced to go to Auburn or Roseville, especially those of us who can't be in your store at the crack of dawn. We hope closing at 8:00 pm is not permanent. I am very impressed with the front cashiers as well as the lower prices, despite inflated prices in virtually all of the stores in the area. There are some excellent local products and produce, which just feels good to buy, as opposed to big business food and sundry products. I have to bitch about the bakery. The workers are so rude. I feel like I cannot ask any question about the products, they frown and give short responses. I feel like they want to yell at me and they have responded to me with outright disdain. Blah. Despite this, I may give them another try to support local businesses and a more sustainable food supply. The cashiers are really friendly, which makes a huge difference!! read more

I moved to Clipper Mills a couple years back. Shopping has been in Oroville or Marysville or Yuba City stores like Raley's, Safeway, Walmart and others. I have a friend that works in Grass Valley so I found a donut shop on McKnight St months ago. Today I went to Grass Valley to get my woman's toes done and me some donuts. Toe shop was awesome and donuts were light but saw SPD grocery for the first time. This is the best grocery store I've seen since my upstate New York days in early 60's. I will forever now choose to shop at SPD going forward. Everyone there is helpful and nice, like the 60's agai. The meat gentleman was awesome and helpful...Best meat I've seen in a grocery store for a long time. I almost bought live crawdads but wasn't heading home soon enough to spoil them. My check out woman was also nice and found she's lived where I live now. Groceries are expensive everywhere now but I'll spend my money in the best place in 40 plus or more years. And...they are not as expensive as Raley's and Safeway! So happy to find you plus Grass Valley is a cool town. read more

Checkers are the rudest people under the sun. Got scolded for trying to help and take our stuff out of the basket. Got scolded again for asking a question about the sandwich stamp cards. Got scolded and dirty looks while checking out with this one checker. He should be fired and not allowed to work anywhere where he has to interact with the public for everyone's sake. read more

I was trying to decide between three stars and four stars for SPD markets but I gave them the edge since they are our local market here versus the big Safeway or Raleys, both of which I also like for different reasons. What I like best about SPD is that they carry dolmas in the deli which I can't find anywhere else and I really like! They also have a good variety of everything. I've heard several people say that their prices are better than Raleys or Safeway but honestly I don't notice a huge difference, they are higher on some things and lower on others I guess. The checkout people and others I've met that work there are genuinely friendly and that is always a plus! It is also really nice that they have a post office right there in their store so I don't have to go to the main post office to deal with mailing packages. read more

Am surprised by the comments about rude checkers. I have always found everyone working in the store to be the nicest people. Always friendly. One of the things I found when I first moved here (about 20 years ago) was that it was the most friendly store. Cashiers talked to you, people in line talked to you. A great place to shop. Unfortunately, I am only doing curb-side pickup right now.... due to covid-19. And, am even more impressed by the wonderful people bringing the food out to me. read more

First of all, I think it's independently owned... and I like that. Secondly, their deli counter is pretty good, they always have freshly baked goods, they have real old fashioned hot dogs in natural casings (I freaking love hot dogs!), locally grown produce, locally made Fox cider (which is totally craveable), and a pretty decent butcher counter. Note: I docked a star because they are a small market so they don't carry everything that I need. This is annoying because I grow tired of having to go to seventeen stores just to get the necessary goods. read more

I like the selection of items at SPD....BUT the staff is so,,,,, weird! They stare at customers in the strangest manner. It's as if the manager gives all the employees "happy pills" blank looks on their faces. Also it is lame when a cashier has a conversation with the customer BEHIND you while checking you out, (not like that). If I am giving you my money to buy something at least acknowledge my presence, if you can do it in a not so creepy way. read more
