I shopped today..Memorial Day. I love this store on Neal street because the employees are friendly and helpful! See receipt for savings. When you sign up on the Safeway app you can save alot of money. I saved almost 30 bucks today! All the employees will help you with the app. I wish i would have used this months ago! Special thanks to JEFF (i think he is the produce manager) for his kindness in helping me substitute an item. He is friendly and always has a smile when helping customers! GREAT employee! This store is too small and therefore lacks the ability to carry the inventory of a full-sized Safeway, like the one in Nevada City. In addition, for such a small store, they have too many employees on the floor. I was in there for 10 minutes, and in each of the very narrow aisles I visited, I was met with an employee asking, "Can I help you find anything?" I felt crowded. The straw that broke the camel's back was the female employee at the self checkout who reeked of cigarettes, stepped inches behind me, just to get my hand basket. She could have waited until I was gone to get it, but no, she felt the need to invade my space and make herself look busy. In the future, I'll only shop at the Safeway on Sutton in the future-- there's no danger of being crowded by employees or the store not having the inventory due to lack of space there. read more

I'm extremely surprised to see that *Shao Mei Brown Sugar Boba Ice Cream Bars* were sold here! I'm from the bay and I've normally seen the boxes of boba ice cream bars in the Chinese market if I'm lucky and it hasn't been sold out by any other person grabbing as many boxes as they can. (Many of my friends have taken 8+ boxes of these particular ice cream bars) I came just to get some ice cream, mainly ben and jerrys and as I walked into the aisle and noticed the familiar box at the bottom of the freezer and got myself one. My first review here. I have come into this store once before, I forget what I was looking for, I think it was along the same lines as why I came in today. I was walking my dog today--downtown Grass Valley, and just wanted to get some bottled water. They have two cold frigs for soda and such. The first frig does not have a place for water. The second, I think may have, there was no label sticker under the voided space. I did ask someone that worked there--dont know what job he has, but he didnt have an idea. He looked where I looked and could not complete the sentence. I had to close the conversation for him by saying, thank you, and I walked out. I just think it is kinda odd that they dont have cold water by the cash register stations. Does not everyone get water from time to time there? It is always a reminder, oh ya... This store is CONSISTENTLY understaffed w a max of two checkers at ANY given time. Lines are so long that it creates mass confusion as to where you can even find room to stand. I have left my cart/basket and walked out on more than one occasion...which is a MAJOR inconvenience. Yes, I am aware that organic doesn't last as long as the other mass produced produce. But what ticks me off is that you should eat all of your organic produce on the way home from said grocery store, or it goes bad. My peaches were disgusting the next day. We consume about a mango a day and I could eat artichokes all day and all night. My babe is sick of them.... that's okay, more for me. This Safeway location now carries my favorite bran cereal. What the malcontents seem to have missed is that this store remains open for the convenience of those unable to experience the wonders of the "superstore" uptown. Try taking the bus home with all those goodies the naysayers are missing out on. I do have that option of high-scale shopping and prefer this store instead. These are absolutely the friendliest and most helpful people in retail - and I shop local enough to know. I've got a solution for the whiners. I just moved up here. I am disabled and this store is the perfect size for me. It's all I can do. When I check out, the cashier always asks me if I need help out, which I do and I appreciate them being observant and kind to ask. Just a couple days ago, one of their best clerks, Lucas, helped me out to the car and he put all the bags in my car for me. I had heavy stuff and he never complained. I like everyone here. I will continue to shop here. it is ADA friendly. read more

By far the worst most awful grocery store in the country - probably even worse than a third world food stand offering "road kill" for sale. Avoid it if you can by driving to the Brunswick location. This place should have been bulldozed down decades ago. Would not even give one star but had to. Would not even go there in the case of an emergency. Yes, it's a small store and you may need to wait a bit on busy nights, but I've yet to meet a rude cashier! Hi, I work here, and i am saddened to say that this safeway and just safeway in general is run extremely poorly and is not recommended for shopping. first of all "old" safeway is definitely not safe, alot of fighting ensues where police are called, also rampant theft. there are druggies and homeless everywhere, cops are constantly called. 2nd, safeway is hireing "special" people, who CANNOT do their job, the rest of us get paid the same or less then them but have to do their job and our own. 3rdly, the lines are terribly, they do not have enough checkers working at once nor enough courtesy during the busy times. 4th, the bosses are on the employees like crazy to get ridiculous amounts of work done for the amount of staff given while they sit on their butts. 5th, safeway does not care about customers, this is not my opinion, again i work here, and we are told to do things and say things that does not work for customers and quite often make customers mad. 6th, workers are not allowed to accept tips from customers, and if a customer refuses to take their money back then we have to turn in the money or get fired, this is down right Not right, what customers give us should not be dictated by the company. I will continue to work here out of necessity as many of us are only working here out of necessity, but if you are looking and can find elsewhere, i urge you to stay away, it is an extremely stressful and ridiculous place to work.
