I had lived in Grass Valley for almost 2 years and am sad to say that I have never been to the Afternoon Deli until now. I wish I would have tried it a lot sooner! Even though the deli is small, they have a cute and quaint outdoor area with plenty of seating. The food is amazing!! As someone who is trying more vegan options I LOVED this tempeh bacon sandwich & hope that it becomes apart of the regular menu. They have a pretty big menu with options for vegans, vegetarians & meat eaters. The staff are super friendly & were so helpful when I asked for recommendations since it was my first time there. I have so much more on the menu that I want to try & am really pleased with the quality of the food and the price. This is a must stop on my list for one of the best places in GV! I do wish that the Afternoon Deli would be a little more active on Facebook or Instagram so that the community could see what their specials are & to be more involved. read more

I love to try new lunch spots when I work. I found this gem in grass valley, ca. I prefer hot toasted sandwiches and this place came up as having some best ones with a green twist. I work on the go and this restaurant has outside seating which was perfect for me. I ordered a club sandwich which is almost like a panini style. I ordered it without tomatoes. Of course I paired it with French fries. It was great I really liked the portion size. I only ate half of it as it was super filling. I ate the other half the next day. The French fries were great with a special seasoning. My only complaint is...the order taker can be just a little bit more welcoming. Finally tried this place today and it's was delicious! I got the chicken club, and my boyfriend got one of the cheesesteaks. We both loved our meals! The place was a little difficult to find as there is some construction going on in the area. It was an extremely warm day and the inside of this deli was much warmer, no AC. We opted to sit on the patio, in the heat, as it was less muggy feeling than the inside seating. We had some delicious garlic pita that seemed to have cheese or a garlic spread. It came out warm and gooey and full of flavor. My husband had the cheeseburger and fries. It was juicy and delicious and the fries were hot and crispy. I got the Mediterranean chicken sandwich and it was so good. Lots of flavor! Service was not memorable as you order at the counter and pay. The only weird thing was you have to ask for ice (ordered ice tea and water) and they give you just few cubes and we had to keep asking for more because the water and brewed tea were warm. They close pretty early, so I'm always rushing to try to get there by 3. Multiple times now I've arrived a few minutes early, really hungry and happy to give them my money, to be turned away. I understand that it's their business and they can close whenever they want, but they closed on me early on me multiple time and I've specifically arrived there on time. Besides that, the fries are always extremely greasy and always upset my stomach. The only other option for a side is a little 1 bite cup of coleslaw that isn't a decent substitute. Maybe had been slightly toasted at some point in the making because there were dark places on it...couldn't find the cheese. Pastrami was so tough it was hard to bite.
