Here is my honest review of Block Renovation. We just finished our bathroom renovation and we love it. Would I do it again or recommend Block to a friend? Maybe. Because the experience was far from perfect. There are things that Block can do to improve on the experience. Let's start with the good things. Block was prompt and facilitated things efficiently from the start. Once you click on that button, you'll get a call or an email to schedule your consultation. That would be followed by planning and design. They have a catalog of design and materials that you can use. Everything is streamlined and if you know what you want, you can certainly speed up the process. Matching with contractor was also a breeze. We had a really easy time working with our contractors. Procurement and delivery of materials were done in a timely manner (except for one crucial part which I will discuss below). Their digital platform was easy to use and informative. Partnering with Mosaic allows you to finance your project 0% interest for a year. Now the not-so-good ones. Block says their prices are transparent. For the most part, they are. What they failed to mention during the planning phase is that there will be certain aspects of the renovation that could not predicted and that extra costs are more than possible. For someone like us who are undertaking our first renovation, this was crucial information. No one wants to start a project with insufficient funds. The other incident was the estimated length of work. It would have been extremely helpful in the planning phase to know that the glass shower can not be measured and cut until after tiling is done. This will be additional 2 weeks that they failed to mention when they gave us a 4 to 6 week estimate. I'm sure Block has encountered the same issue with prior projects so a heads up during the planning phase would have been appreciated. All in all, Block provided an easier way to do home renovations. I would probably pay the extra money again for future renovations but I would make sure to be extra meticulous about asking regarding estimated additional costs and time. read more

Spearheading a renovation in NYC can be a really overwhelming process and working with Block removed all the guesswork. Though they were on the upper end of comparative quotes, the services they provide to help with design, choose finishes, procure materials (at a discount), and manage quality are well worth it and outweigh what any independent contract will offer. The bathroom in my small Brooklyn studio was in bad shape requiring a full renovation. I had a clear idea of what I wanted and their design team helped me bring it all to life while being conscious of my budget. They matched me with a great contractor that was very attentive and detail-oriented, guiding me through the project and raising any issues along the way. I'm very happy with the result. Our entire experience with Block Renovation was such a breeze. The UX/UI in their portal for the design process, project planning and execution was like nothing I had ever experienced - it was so easy to use and let me reference anything I needed to know about my project at the click of a button (ie swooning over my design renderings). As someone who is admittedly pretty Type A, it was so nice to have a competent, prompt, detailed team I trusted to handle the entire project for me so I could kick back for once. They collaborated with the contractor, pointed out specifications I would never have thought of on my own, and executed a STUNNING design with all the details we wanted. The contractors were skilled, courteous, and kept everything tidy, and the end product looked darn near exactly like the rendering - even better. Compared to some of the other absolutely absurdly high bids I got for the same project (which were even less bespoke and inclusive of the details we wanted), this was a no-brainer. read more

We worked with Block to do a renovation of 2 bathrooms in a NYC co-op. I definitely recommend them. In NYC, half the battle is the co-op board and all sorts of city permits and a multitude of fees, and Block helped every step of the way. We were lucky to be paired with a fabulous contractor (Aptel in NJ) who has been wonderful. We worked with Block to repair and renovate our bathroom (as a result of a leak), and kitchen. Overall we are happy with the results. Just wished the process would have gone much smoother. The pros: The design and material selection process was excellent. Our designer listened to what we needed and wanted (like a shower that drained properly, more function and maximize storage. The material choices provided enough options to cater to various styles. They handled all the permitting, Condo approval paperwork and build manuals. They problem solved the issues that came up very promptly. The workmanship of the construction team (Claudio) was excellent. They flagged issues and provided recommended solutions. The cons (not uncommon in construction): Our project manager didn't clearly communicate our return home with the construction team which cost us another week of accommodations elsewhere. Aside from demo, the work on our kitchen didn't start until ~6 weeks in and then there were delays and issues with the materials. These delays resulted in us being without a kitchen while living in our home for several weeks. read more

After having a bad experience with a contractor earlier in the spring, my husband and I were wary of undergoing another home renovation project. But with a baby on the way, we knew that we would need to expand our 3/4 bath to a full bath with a tub. Since it was the only bathroom in the house, we also realized we would need the work done ASAP. Block did not disappoint. From beginning to end, we had an awesome experience. Their design team made selecting styles and options really easy and efficient, while providing us with enough options to create a truly custom design. They were also happy to accommodate us when we wanted to source some of our own items as well. They're very up front and transparent about pricing and great with communication. The contractors who did the renovation were friendly, communicative, and clearly sticklers for doing things right, which resulted in a beautiful project! Please change your system so that you ask for the customer's address BEFORE any other part of the process. Why would you waste my time (and yours) having me fill out all my info, send photos, and schedule a call to talk through my design ideas...only to then finally ask for my address in the middle of the design call and tell me I'm outside your service area? However, you're limited to the tiles, fixtures, etc. in their catalogue -- I had a tile I wanted to use as a trim but they said they couldn't do it. read more

Block redid our master bathroom and... it's totally amazing now. They took about 2 months to do it, and the results are awesome. The original design of the bathroom was kind of that pinky/beige marble that was really popular in the late 90's and early 2000's and was kind of hip/classic at the time. We definitely prefer a bit more of a cleaner, white tile look, and so decided that if we are going to have a large bathroom in Manhattan, we better at least make it look awesome! Block came in, showed us some awesome designs, and it was off to the races. I love that they had some awesome 'off the shelf' looks that both fit our esthetic and also keep our place looking very marketable. When we were looking to buy a place, we kept going to places where someone had done a look that was "them"... but no one else. This is New York, you need to keep your place marketable and put yourself into the space to give it the specifics you want. read more

Block redesigned a small guest bathroom for us. The design process was easy. Our designer- Asia- had multiple zoom meetings with us, making edits to renderings based on our feedback. They waited till all the materials arrive so the GC can work without delays due to not having materials, reducing the time the GC is around. There was one snafu in the design, and Block quickly made it right at their cost which I thought was handled amazingly. All in all we love our new bathroom. read more

The local contractors they found for our job were outstanding & the communication with them & Block was always timely. Everything was very professional. We never would have had the time to manage hiring contractors & shopping for materials. I had my own design ideas but working with the Block designer helped bring the vision to fruition. I had never renovated any part of my home because I didn't want to deal with finding a contractor and buying materials. I had heard so many horror stories about delays and uncommunicative contractors, but I really wanted to renovate my bathroom, so I researched Block and it sounded like what I wanted. I was skeptical but I went for it and it was definitely the right decision. From start to finish, Block was organized, honest, timely and met all the appointments and target dates without issue. It was easy and each person was professional, nice and good listeners. The contractor was amazing. He was always on time, here for 99% of the renovation, communicated well and his workers were skilled, nice and kept the area they used clean. The bathroom was completed in under 8 weeks, and it is beautiful. I love it and it looks exactly like the design drawn up by the Block designer. I highly recommend Block!! We did a complete renovation of our kitchen and I am completely floored with how it turned out. This was our first home and new very little about renovating anything. We also work full time at home so it was hard to organize all the supplies and designs and all the coordination that is involved ourselves. When I heard about Block Renovation their look was what we were going for, fresh and contemporary. The entire process was completely handled by the team and we literally just had to do the fun part (the designs) and point things out if they needed attention. The entire staff was so responsive, friendly and catered to our needs. The total build was 8 weeks and I was so impressed on the craftsmanship and attention to detail. We also have a toddler and a dog and they made sure that the space was completely blocked off. Their payment options were also really helpful. You can pay all upfront or you have a loan with 0% APR for the first year (We went with the second option). Shout out to Joseph and his entire team. The Appliance crew and the cabinet crew. First of all, to take a big step back, Block is basically a project manager that helps you from the beginning to the end. You have Block to manage the project and the monetary side of the business for you, so naturally expect higher pricing than what you would get from independent GCs. They offer two design options - I wish my sales explained to me better right at the beginning - a more "cookie cutter" package and a more customized, higher end option. You can basically go to the highest possible material options but you will need to make sure they assign you a GC who is used to working with high end material. Design phase: I wish they could use a software that generate better renderings. Otherwise it's fine. I worked with Monica who is no longer at Block, but I found her knowledgeable. Measurements: Block's measurement person got our shower curb length wrong which extended the project by 3 weeks. They also forgot a door saddle. These were both addressed though caused some delays. Customized options: Block provided the flexibility for me to keep our existing vanity but to change the top. Their marble fabricator didn't have the right stone (an oversight during design phase to use a specific type of stone I requested), so I worked with the GC's vendor - I'm quite happy with it, thought it took extra work on my side. GC: We worked with Claudio and we're very pleased. Claudio is a very diligent and calm manager, and if there is anything that looks wrong, he will have his team to fix it. Having a calm personality who knows what he is doing is key, and I would recommend Claudio. We communicated via text and he was very responsive. Project manager: We worked with Alyana and she was amazing. She is diligent and calm. She did a great job. In short, Block saved me time and I would recommend its service to every busy New Yorker. The work is not always perfect, but I'm impressed by their desire to get everything right. read more

We wanted to use them for our kitchen renovation. After talking to the project manager, it appears that they are only willing to do the bare minimum and are not very accommodating. That means you are on your own if you want to do anything that deals with the structure, hvac or electrical. With the price they are quoting for a small size kitchen, can't figure what value they are bring beside having an intuitive app/website. We had an overall positive experience working with Block Renovations on our three bathroom renovation projects. We chose Block because of their ability to streamline the project management aspect of renovation. Indeed, their online portal tools were helpful in setting milestones and in giving updates on progress. For bathrooms, you must use their selection of fixtures and materials but the catalogue is wide across style and price point. The design process is outsourced essentially and results could vary but because the material selection is narrowed to the catalogue, you can't go too wrong here. I would say that the designer typically has little understanding of the engineering aspect (for example, a pony wall was designed but it's actually physically unstable to build which we found out from the general contractor ("GC") much later in the process).The general contractor, Paul Paleologos from Apex Remodeling, that was assigned to us from Block was phenomenal and possibly the best part of the project. He was knowledgable, responsive and really guided the project to fruition. He had an eye for details and uncompromising quality. Block's warranty process was fairly easy as well. I would say that Block has a strong value proposition and a really mission. The people that work there are true professionals. While each team (sales, design, procurement, operations) was made of good people, there was little communication or forward thinking if you are trying to work across the stages of renovation. Aside from the pony wall example, here's another one: the design aspect will not consider the time to procure so you can design a bathroom that takes 6 weeks to procure or 4 months to procure and you won't know until the design process is over. If you are looking for a fairly straightforward bathroom renovation and can adapt / make revised choices on the fly, you are in good hands. Block has the playbook down to deliver especially if you have a strong GC. Anything that requires creative problem troubleshooting or thought leadership I've found to be a bit of a struggle even if the best intentions are there. read more

This was our first renovation experience, so while it is more expensive than working directly with contractors we felt it was worth the cost for the following reasons. First, we wanted the end product to be nice without being consumed by the details involved and our Block designer helped us ensure the bathroom is what we envisioned aesthetically. Second, board approval - Block did all the paperwork and we just reviewed and submitted them. Third, Block's procurement service is probably one of the most valuable aspects of what they offer - we did not have to shop or exchange or return any item, things that needed to be replaced due to manufacturing defects or damaged from the construction process got replaced, no questions asked. I worked with Block on a bathroom renovation. As other reviewers have noted, they pitched a very low price to get you to work them and agree to a deposit. The person that promised you the scope then completely disappears from the picture and then they bait and switch you during the design process - telling you that things you thought were included will actually cost more. Our total came out to 50% more than original quoted. The designer we worked with and contractor block used were great (this is the only reason this not a 1 star review). This was lucky since once work starts, Block is completely out of the picture. Don't believe their "tech platform" hype. You work directly with the contractor they choose and Block basically does nothing. This was evident when we were 4 weeks into what was supposed to be a 4 week renovation and Block, after not communicating with us for weeks, said that the there would be at least a 3 week delay due to materials that had not been delivered. This was after the 6+ week delay before we started construction sourcing due to material delays. Overall project completion from when we started talking to Block will be over 6 months. Delays happen during construction, but Block did not communicate and did not manage the situation in any way. That's the key point to this review, Block really doesn't do much for you - so you are better off saving the extra $$ you pay them and dealing with things on your own anyway. read more

I cannot be more thrilled about our Block experience. We didn't know much about the company going in, but immediately were comforted by their professionalism and knowledge of NYC apartment Renos. They guided us through our gut reno of kitchen and bath, which also encompassed work in nearly every room in our apartment. They were able to get this big job done quickly and well. I cannot believe this is the same apartment as when we started! Most importantly we really trusted their opinions when we came across issues. They selected an excellent contractor for us. The design process was easy and fun - and the actual construction took 2 1/2 weeks from start to finish. I often hear disaster stories that renovations can take months, but all the materials came on time, the workers were super professional. Next thing you know it, I had a bathroom of my dreams. We took a chance and chose Block for our bathroom and a contractor from Sweeten for our kitchen and floors. The experiences were drastically different and were it not for Block, the renovation process would have been completely intolerable. From start to finish, everything was well-communicated and planned. The design process was smooth, the 3D renderings clear and the pricing breakdown transparent and easy to understand. The real value of Block, however, was their ability to resolve for the unplanned. There were surprise issues that arose with the bathroom and Block helped us solve for the problems efficiently and without extra cost. This was in direct contrast to the surprise issues that arose with our floors and kitchen that ended in high costs and a lot of stress. For example, when our outlets had to be wired differently than originally planned, they quickly ordered new outlets to accommodate. When our shower doors were installed incorrectly, Block ordered new doors and had them installed ASAP. The contractor assigned on our project was also very pleasant to work with - they kept a clean work site and the work completed was beautiful. read more

I came across block renovations through my extensive search online, and the the reviews stood out to me. This company has a lot of beneficial aspect, they basically guide you through the process from start to finish so you can go to work and not have to take time off in order to renovate your home for example. They are also very official in scheduling you're consultation and require you to provide images online, have a 30 minute conversation with a consultant over the phone, followed by a resume call to look at your place, so on and so forth. Based off of many reviews they clearly do a very nice job in renovating but the ballpark price range for a small bathroom is $30,000 and the ballpark price range for a kitchen is $45,000 ( I'm referring to a standard New York City apartment size) - of course I'm sure that this will not be the same throughout but it's definitely a lot more and then I have budgeted for a bathroom. While I can't vouch for the quality of work I will say that the customer service is very on point and very detail oriented. The company also sends you emails when they say they will and calls you when they schedule the phone call so they are very much on time and reliable in terms of customer care. if you are considering reaching out to this company I would definitely give them a try! ( especially if you have the budget). As a side note I do wish more reviewers wrote the price range for these type of jobs! It's definitely a helpful bit of information. read more

I'm super excited to get started on my construction with Block Renovation's contractor after finalizing the design process. My team is fantastic and made an overwhelming process seamless and simple. They got everything right in terms of what i asked for. My design is fantastic and my designer (Stephanie) worked with me to give me the look I wanted on budget with a few bells and whistles. She was super responsive and helpful. I love the one stop shop aspect as Block will prepare all the paperwork for my building, coordinate permits and they have coordinated the contractor with a negotiated fee. 3D renderings in the design process could not have been more helpful in terms of my comfort moving forward.
