We needed this done quickly (under 4 months design to completion) and due to busy schedules could not handhold contractors through the process. Block is definitely a premium service with a premium cost but they delivered on time, without hassle with a great product. The designer, Ryan and contractor, Mladen were really amazing and made the process painless. We are very happy with the outcome and if we were in a similar situation would definitely use them again. Some additional info, we have a 130 year old home with plenty of hidden fun behind the walls that needed remedying on top of the agreed upon work. It's been a few years since my apartment renovation with Block was completed. I was overwhelmed as a first-time owner and went with Block to help with the design, logistics, and execution. My first paired contractor was unresponsive, so I requested a new one. The second one was good, but I have been finding issues and missed details throughout. Lazy painting, incorrectly installed appliances, crooked fixtures, areas skipped or unfinished. Overall I'm happy with it (hard not to be given the previous state of my apt), but I wish I had kept a much closer eye during the process because Block didn't - I thought they were supposed to do hence their premium prices. read more

Overall pleased with Block and their support in our bathroom renovation. Our designer, Emily, was fantastic. Really helped make the most of our small space. Everyone else at Block was really responsive as well -- any questions we had were addressed promptly. The contractor they paired us with was really nice and responsive as well. Looking back, the two main things I wish I had realized going into the process with Block: - Many of their recommended materials were on the more expensive side. I wish there was more transparent (dollar amount) pricing, and comparison options (e.g. $80 hook vs $20 hook). - I expected our contractor to be more proactive with communication if their work didn't line up with Block's design. In reality, I needed to be more proactive in monitoring their work during the process. But I didn't realize that until far along into the process. Again, overall Block made the process really smooth and easy -- especially for someone with limited availability during business hours. When we contacted their outsourced contractor, he pushed back as well, but then agreed to fix the issue when we had new tile delivered. We purchased new tile for $100 and contacted the contractor. After 6 weeks and multiple outreaches, no response. They clearly do not stand by their workmanship. Think twice. read more

Tl; dr - Don't bother with Block. I'll keep this brief: Block saved me from decision fatigue at the beginning of the project through the option to use one of their template designs and by matching me with a contractor. But that is the only upside. At the end of the day, they became a third party that stood in between my contractor and me with regard to payments, and there was barely any project accountability. The only time they stepped in was when I happened to rate my satisfaction with my project as a 1 on their portal, and even then, it was the barest minimum. We are very happy going through Block to get our kitchen redone. By using their services they were able to: 1. Know what kind of quality materials to order 2. Strong design and style sense 3. Have a pre-vetted contractor that was excellent (Taconic Remodeling) Having never done a large remodel before and being new to the area where we bought our house, the above benefits helped to ease a lot of our worries and reduce the amount of Googling normally necessary for a job like this (many, many hours of Googling). Selecting the design from a pre-selected catalog made the process easy. We would never have found Taconic Remodeling without Block and every one of the workers were professional and easy to work with. A few things to note, there were a few minor details in terms of inches being off which could have been addressed by a more thorough measuring of specific appliances for our space. Note in the pictures how the faucet is not lined up with the center of the window and the one drawer is blocked by the range knob. There's nothing that can be done about it at this point, but for anyone who is OCD about these things perhaps they can be more hands on during the design and measurement process. Or maybe having the appliances selected before measuring out the space will make the final calculations more exact. Overall, we are very happy with our new kitchen and love it. They were able to do a full bathroom remodel in less than 4 weeks complete with a walk in shower (previously had a tub), back lit LED mirror, and waterfall shower head. My wife and I were hard pressed to find a contractor to help us demo/renovate our bathroom. We live in a single-family home, and were expecting our first child - we both agreed that the bathroom HAD to be redone, for safety and aesthetic purposes. After reaching out to over a dozen various contractors, both independent, in the MetroWest Area (we live in MA), BLOCK was the only company that returned our inquiries. This happened almost immediately. One of the areas of focus was timeline and cost. We needed to finish this project before our baby's due date, and it needed to be constructed within our financial means. BLOCK met the mark on all of these areas. A timeline of 6-8 weeks of demo, construction, and inspection were completed on time (leading up to 6 weeks in fact). The contractor they paired use with was incredible, always available to communicate, and answer questions as needed. When BLOCK informs its clients on the notion of vetting the most professional contractors, they do not stretch the truth on that. We worked with Block to renovate our pre-war co-op kitchen. We've never gone through a renovation project before so don't have anything to compare the experience with, but we are overall very happy with the finished kitchen. It's now a bright, clean, and functional space. The contracting team they paired us with was professional, got the work done on time, and communicated clearly from demolition to the finished room. The package the Block team assembled for us to provide to the co-op board was detailed and impressed them, helping us get through the approval process quickly. However, there are a few things we would have liked: more time with the designer and better communication from the Block team before the break ground. We were never sure how long things would take or why. Just had an absolute nightmare experience with this firm. The initial online consultations went well with Victoria. After a few back-and-forth, I settled on a set of bathroom changes that I want to do. As soon as I put down a $500 deposit... everything started going to hell. First Victoria went radio silence for a week. Obviously not good when one started dealing with a new firm. Is this thing legit? After a few unreturned emails, I was concerned enough to call their office to find out what's going on. After talking to someone who promised to speak to Victoria about it, she started responding again. Then they matched me with a contractor (curiously only has a first name). I emailed him with my cell number and he said he will get in touch... then radio silence. I started doing some precursory research on him as one would do before hiring a contractor, not much popped up (hard to find anything with the first name only) and his construction firm had a recent bad review about it being unresponsive and left a job site unfinished which resulted in water damages after a storm, which is what you would say, a red flag. A week later we had a kick-off meeting and it was a disaster. The presentation was error-filled (I didn't ask for a bathtub-to-shower conversion!) and the job cost looked wrong. Again I was concerned enough to ask for the proposal only to find it was an old draft that didn't include any of the changes I asked for. I had to walk Victoria through line by line to get it right. At this point I still hadn't heard from the contractor and emailed him again. He responded with "call me" without providing me a number to call. (Also curious why Block didn't provide his number or his last name). I asked for it and he gave me a number. I called, no answer, and the voicemail box was full. Now considering I read an online complaint about his firm not being responsive, this had my alarm going off. I emailed Victoria asking about what kind of vetting Block has done on him and how many projects Block has worked with him on, because the only work example Block provided is a kitchen in a single-family home, not a bathroom in a prewar building. Again Victoria went radio silence. The contractor finally called me but by this time I already have deep doubt about working with Block. A few days later I got the invoice from Block. Block wants the client to pay for labor and their services in advance. In addition, Block's terms of services state that any dispute the client has with the construction is between you and the contractor and Block is not responsible, so, left unsaid, it's actually up to the client to vet the contractor, which is obviously better done before I pay. I responded to the invoice that I would not move forward without answers to my questions and a proper vetting of the contractor. Yesterday another guy from Block called me to tried to resolve this. I asked for two references of past projects the contractor. He agreed and provided me with one to call today. Then this morning I got an email from Block saying that they will add a 2% penalty if I don't pay in 24 hours. This really pushed me over the edge. I responded that I still haven't got the second reference and the reference check is obviously not going to be done in 24 hours, so we should call the whole thing off and I asked for a refund of $500. I am not holding my breath that I will actually get my $500 back given what I have experienced so far, but just want to share my experience so others can avoid the pitfalls of working with Block and save yourself some headaches. read more

As first time buyers of a New York City co-op apartment, we made the ambitious choice to buy an apartment that needed a lot of work. Block gave us a full service experience through getting the space designed, procurement, and the build. We knew the budget from the beginning of the project and the completion date, which were both met. It was completely streamlined, especially compared to our friend's renovation horror stories. I had been looking at Block for about 2 years before I took the opportunity to work together on our kitchen. Design - we worked with Monica and she was incredible. Really saw my vision, worked out a few options, had virtual design sessions, worked quickly and was in general very pleasant to work with. Project Manager - this part was good, but not great. Responses were sometimes delayed and required follow-up. Construction: We were paired with an excellent contractor, Paul Lopa Designs. He was very communicative, had a great team and they worked fast (with quality). When our kitchen was finished, there were a few punch list items and they were handled right away. We were quoted 8-12 weeks...and they finished in 8 weeks (with the exception of some minor things...but totally functional). Overall Pros and Cons... Pros - take all of the work out of the process. you get to choose the fun stuff and Block handles the rest --- including paperwork for building applications, permits, etc. Cons - there were often some "waiting periods" -- where it felt like I wasn't sure what came next. But maybe that's how these projects work whoever you work with. All in all, we are very happy with Block and our contractor! read more

I had Block plan and design a tub to shower bathroom renovation. Everything prior to break ground was great -- team was responsive and the design looked good to me. I was happy with the rendered result. I ran into a couple issues though -- 1. Tub to shower conversion was not feasible and required a quick redesign. There was no additional design session to address this. 2. Parts for the renovation would randomly show up without notice. 3. Colors for the rendering were pretty off from the result. We recently renovated both our bathroom and kitchen through Block Renovation. The design process was pretty straightforward, with the paired designer even making suggestions that we did not even consider as options. Overall, the designer did listen to our ideas, and delivered a blueprint of what we wanted for both our kitchen and bathroom. It was great not worrying about the materials needed, as Block handled the procurement process. There were some issues with Block either ordering the incorrect piece, or forgetting to order items all together; though; they were generally quick to remedy this once it was noted. During the renovation, the contractor regularly posted progress pictures on Blocks website for us to monitor the progress. This put us at ease, as we had temporarily relocated out of state, and couldn't just pop in to see the progress. Communication was usually very responsive; though we felt that it did break down near the end of the renovation when a defective appliance was delivered and installed. We noticed that the dishwasher was leaking after we had begun moving back into the apartment. Apparently, it was known to Block and the contractor, but not communicated to us. It did take a considerable amount of time to resolve, leaving us with a defective dishwasher that we couldn't use for weeks. Other that the above-mentioned hiccups, we did have a pleasant experience working with Block. read more

Once you make the last payment, Block will ghost you. We've had one of our cabinet doors fall apart after just 3 months of normal use. It was something we were concerned about when we first arrived after the remodeling was done. We've been calling and writing periodically trying to get some service, like a new door, since we're well within our 1-year warranty. So far, Block has not replied to any of our calls, emails, or submissions to their customer service form. For all we know, everything is going into a black hole. We hope this update to our review might be an incentive for someone from Block to give us an update about the situation, or at least acknowledge that the message was received. I used Block to renovate the bathroom and kitchen in my NYC Co-op apartment.  Paying the extra $$ for the designer and coordination of co-op approvals was WELL worth it.  Everyone I worked with at Block was great. My designer (Stephanie) was awesome and so helpful with the many decisions that had to be made. The team that helped with my co-op board approvals was also very helpful.  My approval took FOREVER and they stuck by me and made every effort to help me modify designs as needed to avoid extra inspections and licenses.  My project managers changed a couple of times during the project but they were all super helpful and responsive (especially Matt who I closed the project out with). My contractor (Skip) was a great guy.  We had the usual delays and a very long punch list at the end of the project - but everyone tells me this is how renovations work.  My contractor kept coming back until we worked through all of the issues.  (There were more issues than I would have liked but they were mostly cosmetic.) The one thing that surprised me was that Block does not actually come to see the final result of the renovation to validate the contractor's work.  They told me they rely on feedback from the clients to know how their contractors are doing, but that seems weird to me. Overall, I would definitely hire Block again to help me manage my renovation!  Renovations are not fun, but I could not have done it without Block! read more

They aren't accredited with the Better Business Bureau. Let that be fair enough warning.... Two major floods (caused by contractors) including sewage backup from putting trash down the toilet. Ripped up driveway, major mismeasurements that led to delays, poor materials, horrible unprofessionalism, wrong appliances ordered multiple times, plumbing and tiling mishaps-poor to zero communication when an issue did arise they would hope we just wouldn't notice (?? -and all installed poorly. Not at all worth the money or hassle. So many delays we ended up moving back in after extra time spent in airbnbs-and still no working fridge/stove with hood or anything since April (it's now September.) The plumbing in the bathroom is dribbling/leaking/holes in grouting. With no fix in site. Don't use them. Their motto is take the guesswork out of renovating. They are the ones guessing -and guessing wrong. Don't hire them unless you have a good lawyer already on retainer and the energy and bandwidth to deal with this headache. The water sealing is also not even done properly so when there were leaks it ended up in the basement. Completely fraudulent. read more

You know how people say "it'll take twice as long and be twice as expensive" when it comes to home renovation? I'm thrilled to report that has NOT been our experience with Block! When my partner and I moved into our new home and realized the kitchen was... untenable to say the least, we knew we needed to renovate stat. That said, we're busy working professionals with a toddler to rear and time is so limited. The idea of managing design selections, ordering, receiving, contractors, electricians, plumbers, etc? I get extra grays just thinking about it. In comes Block and the stress pretty much evaporated. They handle everything for their clients, making the renovation project pretty much turnkey. I rambled on about my dream kitchen and before I knew it, there it was, rendered in my actual space! Their catalog has cabinetry and fixtures for every taste, their designers turn your vague thoughts into reality, and every person on the team is lovelier than the last. Wanted a refresh but didn't want to get caught in lots of detailed decisions - so it was a relief to have Block designers take on all the decisions about fixtures and details (and they did it so much better than we would have) - and we are so pleased with the finished bathrooms. Easy to work with designers - they listened well to our wishes and needs and kept things rolling. Our designer missed a chance to advise us in a few cases (in order to say yes to a storage request, ended up with too narrow an opening in a fixed panel shower - but luckily contractor caught it and adjusted) so beware - wished we had asked more of those "what's standard?" questions. We hired Block for a bathroom renovation. The staff was professional and all seemed well. The start was good enough that we considered them for other projects we have. The first problems started with the contractor - a 3-4 week project turned into a 8 week project, with each day of the last two weeks being told it would be done the next day, or in time for a city inspection, and then not hearing anything. There was clearly no communication happening between the team at Block and the people in the field, and we were left wondering each day if we would be able to return home the next day. When the project was completed, we found that the shower constantly leaked and spilled water when taking a shower, flooding our bathroom floor. We asked for it to be fixed. The contractor did a caulking job that didn't look good but worked to push the water back into the tub. Block then asked to put in a stone overlay that would look better and seal things up - unfortunately, due to poor design the water has nowhere to go because their design didn't include a proper shower sill so every time we take a shower the floor gets flooded with shower water. Bathroom professionals should know how to design a shower that lets water drain, but not Block! We did the install in the spring, and still have issues with the bathroom in the fall. They also didn't install the correct shower parts, so we need the contractor to come back to do that too. The kicker is that they told us we're on our own, so now we have to figure out how to fix our shower doesn't work even though their design is the issue. And they asked for a photo for their portfolio (!) They seem so much more interested in how things look than how they actually work. It would have been so much easier in the long run to hire an experienced contractor/designer. I like what they're trying to do, but it's been a disappointing experience. read more

Renovations are tough projects, NYC ones are especially tough. I stepped into this project knowing it wasn't going to be easy and selected BLOCK for this reason. Although we encountered some mishaps, I'm happy with the decision, and feel they helped tremendously. This is an honest opinion of the project and hopefully some tips so others don't make the same mistakes. THE GOOD EXPERIENCE Transparent & fair pricing - This was one of the top reasons I decided to go with BLOCK and I feel they stuck true to the pledge. The cost of everything - hardware, labor, etc was itemized and accessible on the project dashboard. Whenever anything was changed during the design process, the price was updated immediately. This really helped with budget control and decision making. I appreciate that BLOCK stuck to the price promised even during the tight supply chain of the pandemic and period of high inflation. My prices were locked in in April 2021 when we signed off on the design and BLOCK honored the price when we broke ground in July 2022. Overall, my project was about 3% over the initial sign off and this was mostly due to change orders. Project Management - It took 15 months between design and break ground, with around 10 of those months delayed by my building which is excessively strict and painfully unresponsive. There was a lot of back & forth, most of the time, BLOCK would answer within days while my building did not respond for weeks. BLOCK were patient and smart in dealing with my building. They also tried to save me time and money (eg breaking down half the wall instead of the entire wall to bypass further approval and the architect; getting the building to check when bathroom pipes were replaced and making a case that they do not need to be replaced at this time). The Project Dashboard - Very handy that everything is documented to detail. We had very few disputes since everything was in writing. Communication - Responsive, answers within days or promptly during emergencies. The Contractors - They were truly wonderful, hardworking and did a beautiful job. THE NOT SO GOOD EXPERIENCE Limited choice - This is a pro and a con. It allows for quicker decision making. Remember, you can procure a lot of the materials yourself or suggest to use others from other suppliers. BLOCK does offer you this choice, but its not something they openly promote. Change orders - There is a defined number of change orders on the contract and that is a good thing. As the user, if you want to make a change you have to pay for the new item and 15% of charge for the change. However, if BLOCK does not have the material or item you had signed off on, you have to accept the change and they don't have to pay a penalty. This happened when tiles in both of my bathrooms were not in supply. BLOCK presented me with two options for each of the tiles. Because the build had already started, we were pressured to make a quick decision. The big issue is that the choices were given by the tile supplier and not the designer. None of the tiles matched the bathrooms and we did not notice until they were laid. In the end, we ripped out the floor tiles in one of the bathrooms and had to pay $600 for the change. That was especially painful since we did not choose that tile to begin with. One advice I have is to measure everything. While my designer was great, they have never been to your apartment and used it the way you want to use it. Now I'm using the kitchen, I'm happy and somewhat impressed at how everything is designed to pack in so much function in such a small space, but there were a few poor judgements which costed me since I had signed off the design without measuring the layout. For instance, the designer proposed a 33 inch sink which would've taken up half my countertop. I swapped it for a 23 inch which cost be over $400 for the change order. Both bathroom mirrors were way too small and cost over $300 to return. Overall, I would recommend BLOCK, esp for small city bathrooms and kitchens. read more

This was my first time doing any major renovations to my home, so having Block there to guide me through the process made things a lot less scary for me. I found that the design process was super helpful, and my designer helped bring my ideas to life while keeping my budget and reality in mind. However, the coordination between Block and my contractors let a few significant details fall through the cracks, which wound up costing me a lot of time, money and heartache. Overall, I would recommend Block for a first time remodeler and urge them to make sure there's strong communication between design and contractor to get the best value possible. read more

We worked with Block Renovation on our kitchen and bathroom. Pros: Their design catalog vastly simplified our choices; we had a great experience with the contractor we were matched with; generally very good communication during the construction phase; very helpful to have them put together the PDF to submit to our coop board for renovation approval. The fact that they handle all ordering was also very clutch. Though I have no previous experience with renovation to compare it to, by all accounts I feel Block helped simplify things by a lot. By the other estimates we received, don't think Block was ultimately much more expensive than working with a general GC would have been. Cons: Several miscommunications from Block during the design and planning process, and next steps very confusing at times; Our designer was just OK...we felt she could have better anticipated flags we ended up raising and a few flaws or negative aspects of our design (one we ultimately got fixed...had to pay for that, but at a discount from Block; Another we only came to realize after the renovation); they underestimated by at least several weeks how long the construction would take when selling us the proposal.
