We recently had both a full bathroom and half bathroom renovated by Agalliu Contracting. We'd met with the owner, Matt, a few years back to quote the same, but were tripped up with life and not in a position to proceed. During the quoting process, Matt was very transparent in informing us about a variable plumbing cost that could exist based on the building's management and their requirements. It was more than a marginal increase to say the least. However, none of the other contracting companies even mentioned this; they built it into their pricing regardless of whether it was necessary or not. In addition to our research, this honestly was why we chose to reach out only to Agalliu when we were ready to proceed. In keeping with his transparency, Matt was up front in telling us during the re-quoting that we would have been better off financially to have done the work when we first met as everything had increased. Given the economy, this wasn't exactly news. That said, the price adjustment was actually less than we'd expected and the same 8-10 week timeline was quoted for the down-to-studs effort. Every phase of the project went well. The contractors were all polite and pleasant. They cleaned up well and clearly worked to avoid any collateral damage to any other areas of the apartment. The only schedule disruption was due to a condition with the building's pipes and not the responsibility of Agalliu Contracting. In short, after demolition Matt had strongly suggested we have our building's Super look over the other exposed pipes that were outside of our commitment to fix to ensure he did not have any issues or concerns that may be the building's responsibility to repair. In doing so, a pipe was identified as overly weathered and could possibly fail at some point in the future, jeopardizing the work we'd done (yes, we and the building have insurance but who wants to deal with that headache). After discussing with Agalliu, the Super, and the Building Management, we all agreed the piping needed to be replaced. Unfortunately, this was right at the point where the wall needed to be closed, so we encountered a minor delay. Again, definitely not the fault of Agalliu, who enthusiastically favored getting the repair done to avoid future problems even if this delayed the effort. Even with the delay, they still finished a week early. My wife and I were very happy with not only the end result, but also the process. The tile work is beautiful and thoughtfully applied, such as making sure cut pieces are the same size and symmetric. The finishes were also installed quickly and with consideration to our desired positioning. Matt was never more than a call or text away and visited most every day. He engaged with the Superintendent directly to minimize or avoid any impact to our neighbors and other tenants. If we had any questions, he was very quick to address and let us know our options if there was any downstream impact. We will recommend to anyone who asks and even discussed other projects as this one was completing. Thank you again. read more

Don't go with these guys. I'm telling you, you will regret it down the line. Sure everything looks great and beautiful when they are done but it's shotty work. They remodeled 2 bathrooms and a kitchen for me around 7 years ago and I'm dealing with grout crumbling and tiles falling off from them from using the wrong grout and thinset. They also didn't slope the floor of the bathroom tiles so I have water build up every time I shower. I also had to get the tiling re-grouted on my kitchen floor because it was coming apart since they used the wrong grout. Beware! read more

We had spoken to several different contractors but chose him because of his experience with our building and his honesty with what was possible for our renovation. We did a full gut renovation of the bathroom, some electrical work, replaced the kitchen flooring, refinished the floors, and repainted. the quotes that we got were in a very wide range- Matt's quote was on the more reasonable side which we appreciated. As with any project, there were some surprises and changes along the way but Matt was fairly communicative and anytime we wanted to change or add something he was willing to find a solution. Some things took longer than we expected but that seems to be the case with any of kind of renovation. Having just renovated my estate sale apartment with Agalliu Contracting, I couldn't be happier. There were some outside roadblocks, but Matt and his team were there every step of the way to help guide me get the project done. Of course there was a change order or two, which is to be expected in a huge job, but they were small and he explained thoroughly exactly what needed to be done and why. He had to break through, for example, to my downstairs neighbor's apartment because of some plumbing oddity in my building (he could not have foreseen that) but it was done in a day with minimum inconvenience to my new neighbor, which I appreciated. Agalliu contractor renovated out bathroom a couple of years ago. This contractor came recommended by a neighbor, with several caveats. The neighbor told us that this company liked to do change orders. This means that they would find something terribly wrong during the renovation, and increase the cost exponentially. Second caveat was that working with this father and son team was challenging. The father was OK, but the son, Matt, was rude and unprofessional. I would rate the quality of their work and the whole renovation experience as a D, and would not care to repeat this experience with them. Pros: They did the work in the timely manner, although not without conflict and us literally begging them to finish on time. Cons: 1) Sloppy work. We did a gut renovation to try to avoid change orders, and were expecting a thorough job. Their plumber missed a glaring issue with a pipe that was right near the toilet that he installed it, easily visible and on the eye level. I would have been thrilled if they noticed the issue and offered a solution, but alas. A year later the pipe burst, resulting in more renovations. The pipe repair was not in their scope, and I understand that. But ignoring it meant that they didn't give 2 craps about their work beyond their "shmaranty" period. When we opened the wall to repair the pipe, we saw, with some horror, that the hollow areas in the wall were filled with constructions debris and garbage. At the end of the our renovation we were left with cracked caulk which was supposed to be repaired, severely damaged wood on our bathroom door, (giant dents) and bad joints between the tile and the door frame. Which brings me to the second point 2) I didn't want to ask them to repair the problems because the son was such a nightmare to work with. To say it plainly, he behaved like a sadistic cocky asshole, beyond rude and unprofessional. The only time he attempted to behave like a normal human was when he was waiting for a check, pacing around my living room like a vulture. He kept "joking" that he would stop work, insulted us, and made the process very stressful and difficult. read more

Agalliu Contracting was referred to my by Sweeten for a small home renovation project last year. Overall, I found Agalliu's work to be sloppy, of poor quality workmanship, and exhibited no pride of ownership. I would not recommend them. Agalliu's quote was not the lowest, but it was within the range of most other quotes that I received. After speaking to two of Agalliu's references, who provided glowing reviews, I selected them for my project, mainly on the strength of these references. The Good: The project started and ended on time (Agalliu estimated one month); work was performed as specified in the contract; and Agalliu remained mostly within budget, aside from one change order relating to electrical work, which was about 15% of the signed contract price. The Bad: The quality of almost all of the end product. My project mainly consisted of: 1. Knocking down an existing closet and kitchen wall (non-load bearing walls). This required re-purposing the existing baseboard to fill gaps in the wall. The end product looked sloppy because: a. Silicone was used to fix the gap between the baseboard and the wall. b. The Baseboard was not evenly aligned, nor was it sanded down to smooth the wood prior to re-painting. When I pointed these issues to Agalliu, one excuse or another was trotted out as to why they cannot do better. 2. Moving the bathroom door to adjacent wall The scope for this part of the reno was to remove the existing bathroom door and doorframe, open up the adjacent wall, and re-hang the existing door to the adjacent wall, using the existing doorframe. The re-hung door does not close unless I push it hard. I raised this as an issue to be fixed with Agalliu on two occasions. On both occasions, they blamed it on the door needing to "settle" into the frame. In the end, I just ended up sanding down and repainting the door myself. Moreover, the door was just never re-hung properly. When I close the door, I could see the bottom hinge actually separating from the doorframe. This continued even after I screwed in the hinge more tightly to the doorframe. On a cosmetic level, the re-hung doorframe does not extend to the floor, and there is a clear gap between the doorframe and the floor, which is not filled in by the threshold tile. I understand that there are compromises that must be made, especially when I am re-using the same material. This is precisely where I would expect my contractor to be adding value. If re-using the existing doorframe is going to lead to a gap between the frame and the floor, what are some ideas for making this look better without resorting to building out an entirely new frame? Not once did Agalliu provided any ideas. 3. Sanding down and re-staining the floors The scope of this project is fairly simple. And when the floors were first completed, I was very happy with the end results. The stained floor color - a pale oak - looked great. At that point in time, I hadn't noticed that the floor at the edges of the wall had remained unstained. Less than a month after I moved back into my apartment however, the newly finished floor began to show scratches. I did not change my furniture post-reno and used the same chairs I had pre-reno. All of a sudden, post-reno, the floors are showing scratches from the same chairs that did not put so much as a dent to the floors pre-reno. This is probably the worst thing about the whole project. Everything else, I can do something about with some effort. To re-do the floors and protect it properly would require me to move everything out a second time, which would require a fair amount of work. read more

My husband and I recently moved into our Brooklyn co-op and early on knew we wanted to renovate our kitchen. We spent a good amount of time doing our design planning - when we were ready we contacted Agalliu Contracting through Sweeten. Matt and his team are talented at what they do, and we were very pleased with our engagement with them. The entire team is skilled, they know what they are doing, and their work is high quality. Matt gave us very helpful suggestions on tweaking our kitchen design to maximize space. During the project we remained in close contact by phone (calls or text), it was easy to plan out each stage of the construction. Matt and his team were very responsive and communicative. There were a several last-minute decisions we needed to make, they were patient and accommodating. Also, one corner of our kitchen includes an existing riser and a wall mounted gas meter. To install our wall cabinets, Matt's team needed to do custom cabinet cut outs. This took extra time and effort, but they got the job done and it looks great. Throughout the project they worked quickly and cleaned up at the end of each day. This was important as we remained in our unit during the renovation. They also finished on time. Just a few months after buying my first ever home/ 190 sq ft tiny studio apartment in Brooklyn I knew I needed a total gut renovation. My bathroom was in awful condition. It had no electrical outlet. The floor was sinking. The shower was inhumanely small. The tile work was trash. The vintage sink looked like someone had put out many cigarettes there and stained it's white color beyond repair. It looked like it was 100 years old and not the tasteful kind. On the other side of the studio was my kitchenette and oh boy was it dysfunctional. For it's age it could have been considered modern. There were no cabinets, only slabs of wood installed in an open airy layout. The problem was it was way too high for me to reach (i am 5'7'') and there was a wall in front of the highest layer which made no sense because i couldn't even fit a smallish pot if i needed the space. In addition there was a vintage barn-looking sink cemented to the wall it's pipes all came showing underneath. It had to go. The tile work was uninspiring. On entering the apartment you could already feel how small it was. There was all this glorious 9 ft ceiling however there was this wall coming down from the ceiling that ate up 2.5 ft of the height. This room had a single ceiling light fixture centered in the living space. So once you switch it on upon getting home and stepping into the foyer, you would wish to be back in the subway where it was more inviting. The worst part of the apartment was this makeshift wall that covered an old entrance to the apartment right next to it. It was paper thin I could literally here every conversation from the other side crisp and clear verbatim. That wall made me insane. Then finally here comes Matt and his team to the rescue! I met him through sweeten and I'm glad I chose him of the 5 contractors I was picking. He was honestly the nicest human being i met that does construction. I've met a lot when i worked weird jobs. I might of mentioned this already in my sweeten review, but he was super patient with me and kept me updated with what was going on in our 1 month of working together. He fixed and repaired ALL the complains I had of my apartment. A lot of work out-of-contract was done financially reasonably. He even went out of his ways to throw in lots of stuff outside of our scope of work for free because I was so over budget due to my continuously changing mind. I was struggling so much that he offered to pay for painting my apartment (which wasn't in our scope)- totally on him!! Towards the end of the project i had a surprise job for him to transport a custom murphy bed cabinet from the East Village to Brooklyn. We did this job during a holiday week. He and his other 2 guys came to me from another of their 9 to 5 renovation, then stayed with me until 1am till the job was done! Meeting Matt was absolutely amazing. When I bought my apartment and decided I wanted to renovate I interviewed 6 contractors. Matt was hands down the most knowledgeable, affordable, and professional. There was nothing he couldn't/wouldn't do, and I felt very comfortable with him. From the start, Matt was so helpful and honest. I was very delayed with my renovation because of covid, and pregnant, and very stressed out. He always calmed me down, and took care of everything. I loved all of the people who worked with him, painters, electrician, tile guys, plumber, and most importantly, his amazing father. I hired Matt and his team to renovate my kitchen and master bathroom in my previous apartment on the UES. From the start he showed his knowledge and capability to work in a building with a fussy coop board by explaining how we should present our plans to re orient the kitchen and convert our bath to a walk in shower. He gave us a timeline for permits and architecture drawings and helped us keep on schedule as we communicated through texts and emails. Matt was available to come by the apartment twice before I signed the contract and give him a deposit. I had a bid leveling call with a sales rep at Sweeten.com who helped me understand what was being included in my contract with Matt compared to the other contractors I was considering. Once the project began, Matt sent me updates on the work and briefed me on any unexpected changes. For example, the walls in my bathroom were much thicker than anticipated so demolition ran a little long. another example: Once the tiles started going up I didn't realize how small they were and felt that it made the walk-in shower to busy. I wanted long clean lines so I talked with Matt, purchased new tiles and we switched them out without causing much delay to the schedule. A similar issue happened with the range in our kitchen. It was much to small fro the space and I was concerned it wouldn't ventilate properly being so far from my new stove, I briefed Matt and we agreed we should exchange it for a larger one. He briefed me on the cost of some of the changes and I signed off on them before he moved forward. Over all, I felt that I had autonomy and control over my project while still having the support and knowledge of Matt and his father Ilir, who did some carpentry for me. Matt answered my questions over text quickly and acted as an adviser when I was stuck on a tough decision like starting over in the bathroom with tiles: "you deserve the bathroom you want" he would tell me. For those looking for a contractor in NYC or Brooklyn, I recommend Matt and his time for his price competitiveness, personal support and dedication to his client being happy with the final product. Even more strongly, I recommend homeowners being proactive in asking for help and openly communicating with Matt and Ilir- **they are not mind readers!** But if you tell them what you need or want, they will make every effort to create that with you.
