One of the worst coffee experiences I've ever had. Firstly, their most popular drink, the Vietnamese coffee, isn't made in house. It's pre-made and brought in. I'm like imagining them stocking up on the Lee's coffees from Costco then pouring it in my cup. I love Vietnamese iced coffee as well, so i was really disappointed. We also got their avocado toast and brekkie bowl. The toast was so sad. It's this thick piece of bread with barely any avocado on it and a sprinkle of salt and pepper. The bowl was a little better, but still nothing I'd be excited to order again. We were down to see the mouse, and the night before had dinner across the street at BossCat and saw what looked like a great little neighborhood coffee shop in Old Town Orange. Unfortunately the experience did not match the presentation. The external appearance, and even inside is clean and inviting, after that, for us at least, was all downhill. Our visit in general was a disappointment, long wait, less than average coffee, ordered two Café au lait though Blk Dot Coffee had no idea what that was. As we were ordering I noticed 12 - 14 cups lined up on the bar, various types of milk containers strewn about, and in general things were just sort of in disarray. There were 5 or so people waiting and 2 in line behind us, so I expect they get alot of phone or app orders and have the same team making all the drinks versus a dedicated app barista. Gut said to pull the chute and bail but we were too far in. We each had travel mugs and asked if could prepare the drinks directly with the travel mugs (this was the first we have encountered who would not, and actually clarified that the "could not" as a matter of policy). Many, mostly small and independant will actually give you a small amount off for saving the cup and hypothetically contributing to reducing waste, wasnt a concern here. I've only heard about good things regarding Blk Dot Coffee but I didn't want to drive all the way to Irvine or Long Beach for coffee so I was really excited when I saw that this had opened up in the circle. We actually saw this on the way to eat Ojai Burger just across the street and decided to stop by after our meal. Only speaking to the Americano (when I realize that many patrons go for the wide variety of Vietnamese coffee, which is coffee + condensed milk + creamer), it just wasn't very good. It came out super hot (fine) but I had to hold onto it for almost 30 minutes before tasting, and I was super disappointed once I finally did. The coffee beans just can't be high quality. There was no depth of flavor... honestly just tasted like brown water. I'm sure if you add a milk and sugar, it improves, but a plain black coffee or americano are my go-to's and the best way to put a new coffee shop to the test. I gave it one more sip and threw it out. My advice to coffee snobs who just want plain coffee: skip it. But the location within the Orange Circle area is killer. The staff was super nice, and the atmosphere is cool. If there is ONE thing that Orange needs, is ANOTHER coffee shop... I'll admit: I'm a coffee snob. I go out of my way to find coffee that interests me, grabs me by the taste buds, and makes me want to come back for more, More, MORE! Blk Dot Coffee doesn't disappoint. They're located a block from the Plaza in Orange (that's "the circle" for you non-Orangians) in what used to be a dry cleaner business, which means they're a block away from Starbucks, Urth, Snooz, and Philz Coffee - not to mention some pretty eclectic restaurants. They open up earlyish at 6:30am (the bar next door to them opens at 6:00am ... so manage your priorities wisely), and they've been open on time every day I've gone by. They seem to specialize in Vietnamese coffee, which is rich, luxurious, and unlike any coffee of that same time I've had anywhere else. Their menu of coffee-adjacent drinks (lattés, frappés, and cold coffee) is pleasingly well optioned without being overwhelming - like some coffee houses can be. As an enthusiast, I went in the first Monday they were open as soon as they opened up at 6:30am, and ordered up a few drinks that were, theoretically, guaranteed to make me shaky, hyper-alert, and unable to take a nap for the next few days - if they made them right. I had a Spanish Latte - which was just perfectly made. It was spicy in the right places, and rich everywhere else. Highly recommend! I had a Honey Bee Latte - equally as good as the Spanish, but with more of a aftertone that turned up the heat on my taste buds. Highly recommend. The Americano and Double Espresso were just pure joy. They were both heated to "face of the sun" temperatures, so these had to wait a while before I could drink down their awesomeness. If you're a fan of non-foofy straight coffee products, these two really bring the VTM to the cup. Finally, I had a VTM Black Tiger, which is an iced drink. It's iced coffee, milk, brown sugar syrup and brown sugar jelly. This was totally my fault, and not a reflection on the drink ... but I REALLY don't like my coffee "chunky." not a fan of boba, not a fan of - I guess - brown sugar jelly, which isn't liquid, but chunks of brown sugar with the consistency of thick, solid jelly bits. It did taste good, but it is definitely - DEFINITELY - not my cup o' joe. The taste was awesome, but they lost me on the chunkiness. So I'd recommend it if you like that kind of thing. Now, I'm not one to compare/contrast coffee shops, but they are a block away from Urth and Starbucks, so here's my comparison: Urth is a "pack a lunch/spend the day" kind of place where you place your order and you might get it within 30 minutes - even if there's no one in line in front of you. Starbucks ... well, I'm a coffee snob, so I'll just go on record as saying I like their bacon & cheese egg bites - and nothing else. Blk Dot is quick to serve, their drinks are GREAT, their staff is wonderful, their pastries are from Crema (so they're GOOD!), and their place is convenient with street parking only. I've come here a couple times but this will be my last . Someone else drank my drink when it was put out on the counter I asked the manager to have my drink redone and all the ladies/baristas were looking at me saying why do we have to redo the drink and there just smirking giving me weird looks . I told the manager how the barista were acting but he didn't care to listen to me he said I already asked them to redo your drink no questions asked I told him well the baristas are asking why does the drink have to be redone so that's not true and there giving me dirty looks. Front Barista was very rude, we simply asked "what coffee provider do you guys use to service your coffee" and the barista proceeded with a blunt " i don't understand your question. " My partner and i have worked in the coffee industry for over 6 years we were simply trying to be friendly and ask about their offerings. You can understand our disappointment. You get to choose what bagel you want the B.E.C with. Overall pretty good for me to want to come back and try the rest of the menu items. For the Irvine Spectrum location I came here eager to try their coffee for the first time but you had to pay with a credit card a very nice couple paid for me and I was very very grateful, coffee was great but one thing that I had forgotten about was before meeting the couple who'd been so kind and generous to buy my coffee for me they've was another time where I'd gone by there myself only to be told that I had to pay with a credit card and I felt almost discriminated against for being disabled. Twice, we've gotten there a few minutes after opening and the doors have been locked. The girls who open always look annoyed to see us, even though we order an iced viet coffee...all they have to do is pour it out of the gallon. We're always kind, always tip. We go multiple times a week. Today was the last straw, when the girl at the register threw her head back in annoyance that she had to unlock the door for us. We've been here a few times and I can't stop ordering the iced VTM (Vietnamese coffee). It's strong and will power you through a whole day, or two. I decided to go to the location cause it has to be faster then the site. Walked in and there were two people in front of me and they were not being helped. There were two guys behind the counter making drinks so that's good but the didn't acknowledge people were in line or that one person was waiting to pick up an order it looked liked. Now I love their food and drinks but for the price (expensive) the service can be way better and faster. I want to give a better rating for this place but this was a bummer for sure.
