Growing up in KC, I am REALLY picky about my BBQ. I am a jack stack girl through and through with the occasional stop at sneads. We decided to try this place out on a whim and were very much impressed!! The atmosphere is rustic and relaxed. It can be both casual and also a date night kind of place. The staff was very friendly and prompt with a ton of suggestions, which helps. Anyway, the food was amazing!! We had bbq chips app which was delicious!! The ribs were fall off the bone and melt in your mouth. The brisket was tender and just enough flavorful fat. The burnt ends were good, but I prefer Snead's in that regard. I've been wanting to try Blind Box BBQ for quite some time now and we finally had the opportunity to give their Sunday Brunch a shot! I noticed they opened at 9am and we arrived around 10am. We were one of the first tables to be sat. After realizing they had a brunch buffet, I was super excited. Our friend started off by ordering herself bottomless mimosas then we were ready to start at the buffet. They had a cart full of silverware, napkins and plates to grab before dishing out all the food. I noticed the top two plates were dirty to I lifted them up to see if the others were dirty. Every single place was dirty. It was like they had never been washed. They all had food stuck on them. I went to tell one of the servers and they took them all away and brought some new bowls. I already had kind of a meh feeling after seeing the plates. Next, we started dishing out our food and we sat down. They had a variety of dishes. Everything from burnt end mac and cheese to French toast sticks. Twenty minutes past and we finished our first plate and we still hadn't received the mimosa. We had to ask someone else who delivered one of our other entrees we ordered because our waiter was no where to be found. We had to ask for water refills several times. The one thing we were super disappointed with is that the food was cold. All of it. We didn't have a single piece of food that was warm. I guess I should expect this from a buffet.. but they had just opened not even an hour ago. As we were checking out, we handed our waiter our credit cards to pay our bill. As he was running our cards, he told us how he used to accidently run peoples cards for the wrong amounts all the time. This made us feel beyond uncomfortable as he was running our cards. Stopped in here for my son's birthday lunch. We had heard a lot of good things about it. And they were all true. Inside it's a nice cozy kind of environment with friendly service. **This review is from an uncommon (but important) perspective, so I understand if not everyone gets it.** The BBQ is great. I've had it several times and really enjoyed it. The patio is great, too. In general, I like the place. Unfortunately, it's hard to trust them after our last experience. We had a significant dairy allergy in our group and that person ordered a small salad with no cheese on it. Not a big deal. But the salad came out with cheese all over it. It happens and we gave them the benefit of the doubt, but asked for a new one. The server was gracious about it and said no problem; she took the salad back and returned a couple minutes later with another salad. Except the chicken on this salad was the exact same chicken from the first one and it was still sprinkled with melted cheese. Trust being gone, we modified the order to be as plain & simple as possible, and we finally found success. To their credit, they took the salad off the bill without us prompting them. I really want to like Blind Box but this was disappointing and we have no plans to go back. read more

Wasn't feeling this place. I came here for Sunday dinner and while the atmosphere didn't disappoint - clean, cozy, TVs throughout the place - the meats were very much less to be desired. I got a combo consisting of burnt ends and brisket, and both were unreasonably dry. The BBQ sauce provided, while not overly sweet and generally good, did not help at all with making them taste better. The sides I got, baked beans and mac-n-cheese were better, but also not that memorable. The final insult was the $11 bread pudding. Good, but very much overpriced. The pluses going for the place were the actual restaurant and service, which was friendly and attentive. It's odd to lead a review of a barbecue place with a mention of their bar program, but it was just that good. Great drinks, great selection. Likely the best whiskey and cocktail menu I've seen at a Kansas City barbecue spot. There's a lot I quite like about Blind Box. The meats and sides were tasty and well cooked, the service was good, and it was a solid overall experience. But there's one point of divergence for me, as someone writing in this land of luxuriant barbecue plenty: sauce. If you like Gates' sauce, you'll like the sauce here. I don't like Gates' sauce. Is it the vinegar/pickle quality to it? I don't know, and I lack the vocabulary to accurately describe it. Other people will be all over it. But if I have a preference, I'd choose another sauce. Is it bad form to bring your own? Respectably ambitious menu that offers something for just about everyone. The meats were wonderfully tender. The rustic decor is a little odd for the strip mall setting, but I get what they're going for. They may just want to double down on it so it feels more immersive. Or scale it back and embrace the concrete setting. In between it's fine as is, but there's room for some growth there given the obvious thought, care, and quality that has gone into everything else. Overall, and bearing in mind value (I get it, running restaurants is expensive), it's a good 4-star place that would be superlative in just about any other city. I ordered the BBQ Wontons for my starter and burnt end Mac and cheese for my meal. The wontons were nothing short of amazing! Mac and cheese with brisket contained in a won ton wrapper and fried and drizzled with siracha. Who would have known such a thing could bring me such joy? I really enjoyed the food and atmosphere at Blind Box BBQ. We started with the BBQ nachos which were amazing, hands down my favorite of the night. There are a lot of nachos you can easily share with 4 people. I ordered the belly burger with onion straws. I really liked the onion straws but wish there was a dipping sauce for them. The burger was delicious and juicy. I did have a bite of some ribs, which were okay. I really like the sausage too. I also recommend trying the smoked potato salad, it's very good and a nice break from plain potato salad. I wish we could have down dessert, but I was SO stuffed from dinner.
