This is upscale-ish barbecue in west Shawnee. The meats are real strong. Good smoke and good texture. The ribs were a little dry, but not outrageous. The smoked sausage and burnt ends could hold their own with anybody in town. Like other local barbecue restaurants, I thought the normal sauce was a little sweet and a little thick. The hot sauce though, had a nice kick. It paired well with the sausage. I thought the sides, while good, could have been a little better. The potatoes in my smoked potato salad were a little hard for being slow cooked. The beans could have used a little more kick. Overall, not bad, but I expected more from an upscale restaurant. Service is excellent. During my visits my server and / or bartender was welcoming, personable and able to give good recommendations and pairings. I'm glad they were there. read more

oh my, had happy hour/dinner yesterday and what a great experience! The beer was ice cold and the service was great too. I had the platter with burnt ends baby back ribs and smoked sausage, it came with potato salad and pickles and onions on the side, I think it was $21.00. So we have been coming here for a couple years and the quality used to be extremely high. However the past 2 trips we've made the food was, nothing to get excited about. Our server brought us our appetizers with no napkins or silverware and then disappeared- the onion rings weren't drained and the plate was DROWNED in grease. Our most recent visit they were out of baby back ribs (which is understandable) they were subbed with spare ribs. The spare ribs were a nightmare. Filled with gelatinous bones that the meat would not come off of- taking a bite of soft bone accidentally is the most disgusting thing. I couldn't even finish the ribs and neither did my friend whom also got the ribs. My favorite side Mac n cheese was cold and tasted like velveeta- it's extremely disappointing- This was our favorite bbq place and it's gone down hill extremely. Whatever you do DO NOT order the spare ribs it's entirely gelatinous bones- and the few bites of meat you do manage to pry off that isn't fat or cartilage- is over cooked and chewy. Probably won't be recommending this place to anyone anymore. I don't like playing "will the food be good this time" this place used to be extremely consistent. What we just had was not only expensive but luke warm-dry- and down right sad. I wish I could get my money back- we were so excited to show our friends this place and it was embarrassing to have this sub par dry cold food come out. I got maybe 3-4 bites of dry meat off my ribs that I had to spit back into a napkin. The rest of the fat and cartilage was left on the plate. The entrance doesn't really accommodate for a dinner rush as it was crowded with our group of four and a couple others, and had to wait about 15 minutes for our table after our reservation time. The menu and food were all fine. The food came out super fast too which was nice. The server was neglectful of our table, though. She seemed to check on every table but ours. We didn't get our drinks until getting up and asking her while she was at another table that was right next to ours and this was after we already had our appetizers and entrees in front of us. She was going around refilling others' drinks while we still didn't have ours. There was no manager in sight to discuss the issues with. The corn was also not good. It was liquid and we couldn't make out the taste. Unfortunately, the brisket was fatty and not tender. We wouldn't recommend this place for sides. I was expecting more with all of the great reviews. I'll start with the good the burnt ends were moist and flavorful, corn bake and fries were awesome. The bad my son ordered a cheeseburger and it was spongy and pretty gross. He took two bites and couldn't eat any more. I typically never say anything but it was inedible and the waiter was kind enough to take it off of our bill. Needless to say my son left hungry. Six years later, I thought we should give this place another try. My feelings haven't changed much. The food LOOKED delicious but the meat lacked flavor (SALT particularly). I asked for some hot BBQ sauce and they brought me a fruity syrup type concoction that was okay but not BBQ-ish in the slightest, more like hot wing sauce. The sausage was very mushy. Things I liked: Fries, they are advertised as hand cut. I have my doubts. Corn casserole, very delicous, well-seasoned. Would go back to get that To-Go. I originally ordered cole slaw and asked if it had celery seed in it. She didn't know, but didn't "think so". I told her I would get cole slaw, but if it had celery seed in it, I wasn't going to eat it/pay for it. She had little response, but did come back later and tell me that it did have celery seed so I was able to change my order. One server kept running her hands through her ponytail and digging in her ears with her fingers. Another was carrying around a tissue dabbing her face, at first I thought she was wiping her nose, but I think she was dabbing sweat, still a little gross. Someone from out of the area was eating at the table next to us. He took a phone call and told the caller he was eating Burnt Ends at a local restaurant. I can only imagine the person asked what Burnt Ends were because he said "It's something that they are known for around here. It's kind of just like pot roast." Well, the sad thing is, now that guy thinks burnt ends are like pot roast because that's what theirs are like. Flavorless, sad little greasy beef chunks with no flavor of rub, no cooked on yummy bark. Just little cubes of flakey meat. Poor guy, I wanted to correct him and tell him to go to some place better before he defamed Burnt Ends to all the world. read more
