As a local who has supported Blade for years, I was extremely disappointed by how our party of eight was treated. We made a reservation and were told we could order from the Happy Hour menu, but that promise wasn't honored. Instead, we were asked to split up at separate tables, and even after speaking with managers, no effort was made to help. We were essentially told it would be better if we left. We went to Finley's instead and had a great experience. Sadly, after this treatment, we won't be returning, and those of us who recommend restaurants to our rental guests will be removing Blade from our lists. read more

Bib Gourmand has missed the mark. Although ratings at a nearby restaurant are accurate, the real gem in Oceanside is The Blade. We have been blessed to travel the world to dine at fine restaurants. The Blade is among the best we have visited. We always appreciated the outstanding customer service and of course the food offerings. So I'm going to share insider information...there is a limited secret menu that is amazing. Available on the days when the Chef is present. I can not recommend this place enough! The service and all the eats were absolutely wonderful! I can't believe this was the only item of food I took a photo of. There were 8 of us and everyone raved about their appetizers and dinner. The sangria was yummy as well. Can't wait to go back. They ha e lots of gluten free options and are very accommodating. We had the pasta with mushrooms which my picky sister absolutely loved, we got the chicken plate which was to die for. The Il Gallo drink is the best drink I've ever had, our group had multiple drinks! Chef Angelo is so sweet and talked to us on our way out. The atmosphere was great and felt like I was in Italy. The bruschetta lit up the room. The cheese and olive oil was tasty and bread was the right amount of crunch. The calamari looked a bit over cooked but tasted ok. The octopus had a perfect slight char to balance the flavor of the octopus. Not too grilled and not too chewy octopus. Thoughtful in design and bathroom that reflects the history of a news print building. The pizza was delicious because it was cooked perfectly with just the right amount of crunch. Superb food, we had pasta dishes, calamari and cannoli for dessert. Every dish is great. I love my clams with linguine, I can eat this everyday! We sat outside, got there around 6pm and services were prompt. All staff are courteous. Our server Nicole, wow she's great. Super helpful, nice, professional, courteous. A unique Italian restaurant in downtown Oceanside. The building is the original building of a well known newspaper from early 1936- hence the name of the restaurant . Cute clean entry way, in and out door seating. News paper clippings thru out to browse. A clipping from 1963 of JFK Jr. saluting his father's coffin driving by clipped out and framed takes you back in time. I tried wild mushroom risotto with mozzarella cheese with chicken. If you love mushrooms you will love this dish. And for dessert, tiramisu freshly made. Delicious! I chose this place to celebrate my birthday over the past weekend. I really like the urban vibe of the building but parking can be a little bit of a walk to the free parking garage and there was a lot of transients right around the corner. Dinner was with my husband but if it was me just meeting girlfriends I wouldn't feel completely safe. On to the ambience. The restaurant is beautiful inside and the hostesses were kind as they seated us in the corner. Because of the urban loft like space it is really loud inside with just conversations at each table. I will say our table of two felt small. I love to order many things to try and it felt like a game of Tetris trying to figure out where things go. Our waitress was really awesome and had some great recommendations. We started with some cocktails (my husband had the capo 5/5 and I had the Lisa Bella (4/5) arancini (3/5 for me. I like more cheese in these so I wouldn't repeat this order), and the prosciutto Burrata (6/5 it was so delicious with some pizza crust that was warm and perfect). Next we had some pastas: a pink sauce rigatoni with sausage and mushrooms and a mushroom papardelle with truffles and I added sausage. Both pastas were amazing. We ended the dinner with the blueberry lemon ricotta cheesecake which we couldn't finish and took home. Everything was great. I asked our waitress if the patio was dog friendly and she said yes! Last night was my second experience at Blade 1936. It was a birthday celebration last night, and great Italian food was the request. Our reservation was for 7:00; we arrived a little early to park and were seated immediately. I very much appreciate that given the special occasion and it was packed with not a table or bar stool open. As was my first experience, Chef Angelo and the kitchen nailed it! We had Ravioli Di Carne Salsa Di Formaggi with a side of meatballs and Penne Arrabiata. Both were perfectly prepared with a great presentation. The birthday girl enjoyed a Cactus di Campagna, which I tried, and it was delicious. My only detraction was the service at the table; both in my reservation (online) and when we sat, I mentioned it was a birthday celebration. Our server did not trouble herself to wish her a happy birthday, and her general attitude was poor. While we declined dessert (Handel's was another request), the complimentary birthday dessert that a table near us received would have been a classy move. I would mention how the food was delivered to the table. There was little care putting it in front of us and seemed rushed. I want to be fair; it was a busy night, but I found this out of character from my previous experience. Nothing, some attention and training can easily correct. Notwithstanding the service piece, this is a beautifully appointed restaurant with a best-in-class Chef and kitchen staff. Excellent food and drink, I plan on dining here again to try their pizza. I came here this past weekend for dinner. I had high hopes due to the great reviews I had read on Yelp. I was really in the mood for some authentic Italian food. Blade is located around downtown Oceanside in an awesome old building. This location was walkable from my hotel and is near many hotels and the beach. We waited a little while after our reservation time, but not much. The hostess was friendly and greeted us as soon as we entered the restaurant. The inside of the restaurant was nicely decorated, had nice ambient lighting; overall, a nice comfortable restaurant with a cool, semi-romantic vibe. It was just very very loud in there, but no big deal. I ordered their focaccina appetizer hoping for some delicious doughy focaccia bread. Instead, what I got was dry, burnt, pizza crust cut into pizza slices. This was utterly disappointing, as I love focaccia. This was sent back and taken off our bill, which I appreciated. For the main course, I had the Pappardelle Ai Funghi E Olio Tartufato. This was a thick pasta tossed in a mushroom cream sauce and drizzled with truffle oil. I have to say that this pasta was outstanding, which is why it pains me to only give 3 stars here. My partner ordered the Bistecca Di Manzo Alla Brace, which was a ribeye steak with a side of grilled vegetables and potatoes. The potatoes and vegetables were pretty tasty, but the steak was very overcooked and under seasoned. It was highly disappointing. When you are charging so much money for a subpar dining experience, it is very disappointing for customers to spend so much on a meal they could've made better at home. No Flavor! Mind you ordered non-meat dishes but when the waiter suggested the fried cauliflower was bland because after all it's cauliflower, I knew I was in trouble. I asked the bust boy if they used salt, pepper, garlic, basil, oregano, etc and he said he didn't know. Our waiter then interjected that they did and appeared offended by my inquiry. The cauliflower though fried to perfection it was full of oil and had literally no flavor, it was like eating crunchy air. The pasta was the veggie rigatoni, it was a bug bowl of the same. A saucey bowl of tomato sauce and sliced veggies. No seasoning no deep umami flavor. The high note was the tuirmisu,it was quite good and I am not a fan of things with espresso but it was yummy. My sister and I had a mixed experience at Blade 1936. The food itself was delicious, and the hostess set a warm, welcoming tone when we arrived. In fact, most of the staff we encountered were friendly, which made the experience better. Unfortunately, our server Sean/Shawn, didn't match the professionalism of the rest of the staff. From the beginning, he seemed disengaged when he greeted us. When I asked about modifying my dish, his response came across as dismissive and condescending, as if the question itself was unreasonable. At no point during the meal did he approach our table to check in; the only time he asked how things were was when he yelled out to us from across the room as he walked past on his way to another table. It felt abrupt, inattentive, and unprofessional, especially in an otherwise polished setting. When we were ready for the check, we sat with our plates pushed aside for quite a while before he returned, which dragged out the end of the meal. As we left, the hostess was the only one to acknowledge us or say goodbye. While Blade 1936 clearly has talented chefs and some genuinely kind staff, the lack of attentiveness and courtesy from our server overshadowed what could have been a great experience. read more

Coming from Jersey, my taste buds for Italian are spoiled. Yet still, every time I'm back in Oceanside, I find myself always wanting Blade. I've had the bolognese, ravioli, gnocchi, bruschetta, and pizza on various visits, and not one thing has let me down. The Capo cocktail on their menu is a favorite, and you must finish your dinner with tiramisu. The vibe is somewhat upscale and the service is impeccable every time I visit. 11/4/23 Food: 4/5. I ordered a Margherita Pizza and it was pretty good. Presentation wise, it was great other than the pizza not being proportionally cut. Taste? 10/10. It wasn't super heavy and that almost left me full. Next I got the bread before my pizza. Bread was good and cut into a couple pieces with a small side of butter. I was kinda hoping the bread would be hot/fresh but still tasted good regardless. Finally, got the vanilla bean or vanilla gelato. I wasn't in too much of a rush and got me whatever I needed + water refills. Ambiance: 5/5 everything looks kinda fancy and well put together. The newspaper kinda wallpaper coming into the restaurant is really cool. And the Italian inspired/products on display were really cool too. When you walk in on the left, you see one of the workers making pizza and flipping dough in the air. You could tell he's pretty experienced. In terms of seating, probably took a good 10-15 min to get seated but outside as a party of 1. I would've liked to sit inside but outside was fine other than it was cold out. I ended up meeting who I assume is the owner - Angelo. You could tell he's Italian by how he looks & talks and I love it. Him and the restaurant felt authentic. He grew up in Sicily and I believe learned to make pizza out in Italy + he used to be in the army too. Overall, I'd consider coming back for sure and bring family and friends. Ok many reviews mention Kim the owner and he is a very charming man who seems to stop by every table to make sure everything is great and let me tell you happy hour is a steal. A generous pour of decent wines for $7? A great margarita pizza (superb tomato sauce!) for $12? How is he making money? He told us the newspaper s on the wall are a tribute to a previous tenant and that 1936 is the year the building was built. We will be back in the future to try some of those tempting pastas. 10/10 restaurant! When I first walked in the staff was welcoming and sat us right it away. We started off with the bruschetta which was the perfect amount of crunchy but not too hard. There was just the right amount of topping on top. For dinner I had the gnocchi with sausage. The gnocchi was one of the softest I've ever had. I never knew what amazing gnocchi tasted like until I tried this restaurant. It was my friends birthday and they gave us a free tiramisu. It was perfect to split with four people but I wish there was more because this was one of the best tiramisu I've ever had. Inside the restaurant it was a little loud and busy with conversation, but not overwhelming for me personally. If you are looking for a place to try some of the best Italian food I've ever had. As a reflection of my last visit here, I have reduced stars from 5 to 3. While the owner and the manager on duty, as well as the waiter who took over, did make quite an effort to salvage the experience, I still have to acknowledge the catastrophe that put them in the position to do so. Arriving just 30 minutes after opening, we were approached by our waitress, Jessica. Under normal circumstances her coworkers say that she is quite the staff member however, in light of her dogs recent illness, so she decided to make her customers an outlet. Rather than getting into all of the nitty-gritty details, the last thing she said, in reference to our table was accompanied by profanity. In all my years I've never seen somebody be so bold and for the behavior to be reinforced without penalty, makes for an atmosphere less than comfortable. We did have an extraordinary individual take over on her behalf named Sean. This gentleman has exquisite food knowledge with tantalizing recommendations, and was able to assume our needs before having to request. He even ensured that Jessica remade our old fashions with a baller cube (like she had originally) rather than straining the cocktails that were sent back with chipped ice, into a new glass, watered down and adding a new cube. The beverage fiasco was what had us request a manager for the second time with the first being when she took offense to us asking for an entrée that had been described at the table next to us through the server who has described it. This review could quickly go into a novel however, I will leave it here and just say that I normally give out 4 to 5 star reviews, as long as each of the check boxes for food, service and ambience are professional. First time here, wanted something Italian for an early dinner. We were seated right away in main hall (indoors) as it was ridiculously hot out. We ordered the calamari appetizer, linguine alle vongole, pappardelle ai funghi e oilio tartufato, and cioppino. We oddly had our entreés served before the appetizer, but that's OK. We all ate everything together anyway. The calamari was very salty and not as crispy. The linguine alle vongole was bland, very heavy on the wine taste. The pappardelle ai funghi was good though. My husband requested meatballs on his plate, which were just mediocre. Large in size though. Now the cioppino- this dish stole the show. It was delicious! The amount of seafood in it was also good. It comes with a side of bread (sourdough?), which was delish with the cioppino. It wasn't the best cioppino I've had, but it was still pretty delicious. The downside was it was HOT. We were seated by the door with intermittent breeze, but still... it felt humid and very warm inside the restaurant. Wish it were cooler inside, but it's just the restaurant itself. They tried by having the ceiling fans going. The interior is trendy. The service was overall good. Although it took awhile to request the check and to get it processed. I think they got busy so they forgot to stop by our table for some time. So we just grabbed a random employee to have our check processed. Then there was an older gentleman who stopped by to see how our time was at the restaurant (perhaps the manager vs owner?), which was nice. He was very pleasant. Overall, good dining experience.
