The food this time around was okay. We ordered a pizza for happy hour and within 2 minutes we got it and it was "warm ". We shared some octopus and a main dish of tortellini which were good. The biggest thing that made me upset was that I booked the reservation with notes that it was my 33 year anniversary and my cousin 35 years anniversary and they didn't acknowledge it. Went to Blade 1963 in Oceanside with the family for a birthday. Everything on the Italian menu looked good, there were 10 of us and everyone tried a different dish. The sauces were just right, the pasta from spaghetti to Ravioli were cooked to perfection. I had rigatoni with one of 3 available sauces . Even our 6 year old ate almost all her meal. Service was great, friendly staff and no mistakes. Price was a little more than I'm used to, but SO worth it! So Mothers Day came along the following week , guess where we went!! This time I had ravioli with a cream sauce. I wanted to lick the plate , I kid you not. My husband had rigatoni again, ate every single bite of a huge plate with a mild red sauce. What is the most important thing to consider when reviewing a restaurant? The Food! This is an authentic Italian eatery (take it from someone who lived in Italy for 3 years, was married to an Italian, and sampled food from all regions of Italy). I didn't try the pasta this time (I'll be back) but we had a Margherita Pizza that was stupendous. The red sauce was so fresh and bright, not the heavy oil-laden sauce you often get on a pizza. This was like pizza in a mom-and-pop place in Rome. Perfect crispy crust, nice portion of mozzarella, basilico and the lovely light red sauce. Because the sauce is so light it drips a bit, but the taste is perfect. We started with the Arancini (fried rice balls, very typical appetizer in Italy, especially in the South). They were a little different than I had in Rome, but the taste was delicious. They are quite large and filled with delicious flavored rice, with cheese in the middle. A yummy start. Although I didn't try the pasta, I saw plates of it going by our table and it all looked and smelled very authentic. Can't wait to get back and try the Bolognese. The place itself is sort of set up like a small sports bar, not your typical low-light place with romantic corners to hide in. But it is such a friendly place. Everyone seems happy, including the wait staff, which means it is a good environment to work in. Angelo Traversa, the Executive Chef and Owner, came by our table and spoke with us (my friend Angela and I both speak Italian so we were happy to converse with Angelo), told us something about his history and how he came to start this restaurant. It was like old home week, everyone felt like family. It is nice to see Oceanside up-scaling, and Blade 1936 is certainly a welcome and tasty addition. Try it, you'll like it! Wow! This place is amazing! The ambiance is super cool. The old newspaper Blade Citizen used to occupy this building years ago and was founded it 1936. Lots of cool decos and such cool history! We ordered the bruschetta and it's crazy that such a simple appetizer can be this tasty. I didn't need to add cheese, pepper..nothing. My husband ordered the Rigatoni with sausage and mushroom in red sauce that was just a touch creamy, the perfect ratio, so very good. We ended our meal with a Tiramisu, a cannoli and two perfect cups of coffee, we like ours very strong and they did not disappoint! Parking is tricky on Thursdays because of the market but we were pleasantly surprised when the chef was hanging out up front and helping us look for parking. The ambiance appeared industrial yet chic. Definitely a trendy place to go on date night. As a new parent, it is always nice to see other families were accommodated there as well. Service was great. Hostess and waitstaff were friendly and attentive. Chef was awesome. Happy hour was stellar. Food tastes even better when it's on discount. The calamari was scrumptious. Margherita pizza had a balance of flavors. Basil was nice and aromatic. Ordered the Amari spaghetti, which had a lot of toppings. Visited Blade 1936 for Father's Day with a group of 9 people. We made reservations and we're able to start with drinks from their happy hour menu. Our server was Jade and she was so great, very friendly, attentive and accommodating! Ambience was nice, but kinda wish they had some music playing since the private room is a big echo-y. Everybody loved their food!! My pasta bolognese was delicious and my husband enjoyed his veal with mashed potatoes and veggies. I also ordered tiramisu to go and it was a nice treat. I've been wanting try this place for some time and a friend and I decided to stop by on a FRI night in the middle of the high tourist season. We had to sit outside because the place was packed, but the experience was still great. We ordered drinks right away. My friend got the signature cocktail Lisa Bella and loved it. I got a local Hazy IPA which was perfect. They have local rotating handles of a lager, IPA, Hazy IPA and Pilsner so you can always get the type of beer you want from one of the fantastic local breweries. We ordered the Insalata Verde to start and it was really great. A fairly simple salad but the mix of tart goat cheese with the candied pecans and the vinaigrette, was a great way to start the meal. For entrees, we ordered the meat lovers pizza and the paparadelle with mushroom pasta and both were incredible. The pizza dough might be my favorite of all time. It's soft and gooey and wonderful. The meatball and pepperoni were also top shelf. The pasta was clearly made fresh and the texture and all the flavors mixed perfectly. We finished with their house made daily tiramisu. Now tiramisu is probably my favorite dessert and I consider myself a bit of an expert on it and this was some of the best I've ever had. Truly amazing stuff. We've had good experiences at Blade 1936 in the past, which made this visit during Friday happy hour especially disappointing. Happy hour here is clearly popular, and the prices are reasonable when everything is executed well. Unfortunately, several issues detracted from the experience this time. After dark, the area around the restaurant--especially near the OTC parking garage--felt uncomfortable, with open drug use visible nearby. That's obviously not something the restaurant directly controls, but it does affect the overall dining experience. Once seated, lighting at our table was so dim that we couldn't read the menu without using a phone flashlight. That should be an easy fix. Food was the biggest letdown. My Margherita pizza was badly burnt. The fried calamari was overly salty to the point of being hard to enjoy. To their credit, the wait staff immediately offered to replace both dishes and were professional and attentive throughout. Unfortunately, I had already eaten most of the pizza because I was starving, and the burnt aftertaste lingered. I want to emphasize that service was good and that we've enjoyed Blade 1936 in the past. When the food quality is right, the happy hour is a solid value. This visit just missed the mark in several ways, and I hope it was an off night rather than a trend. read more

We took a little family trip to Oceanside a couple weeks ago and wanted to get dinner somewhere nice but not uncomfortable for our two small kids (or the diners around them). Blade 1936 seemed to fit the bill, and I made a reservation on OpenTable a couple hours in advance. It was exactly what we wanted. The restaurant was cool and attractive, in a 1936 building that once housed an Oceanside weekly called the Blade-Tribune (hence the name, which I thought was strange for an Italian restaurant). The interior was spacious and modern, with very high ceilings. It was a Saturday night, and the place was pleasantly bustling--fun for us, while still appropriate for a family outing. At one point, our two-year-old was standing on his high chair playing with the cap on our wine bottle, and I think we were the only people who noticed. Service was great, prompt and friendly. We had beverages on the table within minutes of sitting down: kid-safe water cups for the boys and a bottle of house Montepulciano for Mom and Dad, about $40 and easy to drink. The food was quite tasty. We started with the prosciutto burrata appetizer and a Margherita pizza for the kids. The prosciutto and burrata were solid quality, and there was plenty of both, served with soft flatbread. The pizza was satisfying, with a good crust, topped with tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, and fresh basil. The pastas were great, too. I got the linguine alla vongole, with clams, garlic, parsley, cherry tomatoes, and white wine sauce. My husband had the ravioli di carne salsa di formaggi, beef ravioli in a very rich, creamy sauce made with gorgonzola, provolone, and parmesan. We really enjoyed our time in Oceanside and hope to come back for another low-key getaway. I'd happily revisit Blade 1936 and would recommend it to just about anyone. If you're looking for catering for an event, I highly recommend Blade 1936. Chef Angelo was amazing to work with from start to finish. I needed food for a last-minute backyard wedding for 40 guests with only three weeks' notice, and he made everything so easy and stress-free. He was always quick to respond, incredibly helpful, and gave me so many menu options--even offering to customize dishes beyond the menu. We ended up with an incredible spread: antipasto, chicken piccata, salmon, salads, two pasta dishes, vegetarian-friendly options, pizza for the kids, and cannolis for dessert. Everything was absolutely delicious, and our guests couldn't stop talking about how great the food was. Angelo personally delivered everything right on time, hot and ready to serve, and even provided serving trays and utensils which made presentation simple and beautiful. There was more than enough food for everyone, plus plenty of leftovers. It may have been a simple backyard wedding, but the food was anything but simple. We started with and shared the Arancini Siciliani which was yum yum. The we ordered 2 pastas and shared. We had the Gnocchi Alla Sorrentina (honestly some of the best gnocchi I've ever had) You know your in good hands when the owner makes his way to your table to see how your experience was and then takes the time to tell you about all the wonderful imported items he brings in to make it the most authentic it can be. We went here for a large event that had about 50 people and this could have been reason why their food and service was subpar but that said I've been to restaurants that host large groups and had a great experience so I think planning was not done with Blade 1936. So please keep in mind this review is for a large party. We had a preset menu of a five course meal. The menu on paper sounded delicious. But unfortunately everything that came out was not good. Everything came out cold. And I mean cold, not warm but cold. The staff kept forgetting our table, so while everyone was already eating we were left waiting an extra 10 mins. And when we would ask where our food was, they would said "oh you haven't got it?" I ordered an espresso and even that came out cold! As we were finishing it courses they also neglected to clean out the finished dishes. So we had piles of plates. definitely unappetizing. Would I go back? Probably not. read more

We came in on a busy weekend night, and got seated in the overflow section, which honestly just seemed like a large storage room in the back of the restaurant, so already the ambience in relation to the higher prices for a supposedly more upscale Italian restaurant were at odds. Ordered two dishes: the braised beef in red wine sauce, which turned out somewhat inedible because the texture more resembled meatloaf and lacked that rich stew flavor. Fortunately, they did allow us to send the dish back (somewhat reluctantly - mind you, this is the first time I've ever actually sent a dish back!), and took that off the bill. Next up was the grilled octopus, which was a solid 4 stars. This was a good octopus - good, but not great. Overall, I would rate this restaurant between 3-4 stars. My wife and I met the owner of the restaurant Kim, at dinner at another restaurant and he invited us to come and enjoy a free dessert if we ever stopped by. First coming in we were greeted by the hostess and they took us straight to our table. The overall restaurant has an overall homie vibe. There was an outdoor patio, back side seating area and inside bar sitting area. There were TVs and the clippers game was on, so I was enjoying the vibe. We decided to do a pasta which my wife chose which was a seafood spaghetti, which came out pipping hot at the same time with the pizza which was the Gorgonzola pizza which I really enjoyed with the blue cheese. Our appetizer the calamari was not too battery and the marinara was delicious, it had little cut onions in there which made it flavorful. About half way through dinner Kim stopped by and asked if we been here before, and I mentioned we met last time at dinner which he did say he did remember us. He checked to see if we still had the card he gave us which offered the free dessert which was a tiramisu. I said sure did, he said make sure your waiter sees the card and we'll get you that dessert. Kim is super nice and as the dinner rush came in and got busier he was walking around greeting everyone and checking in with everyone, to me that shows an owner is dedicated to his work and wants to make sure everyone who eats there feels like family. He explains to everyone the ingredients he gets comes directly from Italy and going there myself I can feel the authenticity. A lifetime local giving the review here. The restaurant is Blade Tribune themed. I was a newspaper carrier for that newspaper when I was a kid here. So unexpected and fun to see that! I had no idea when I went there. It looks kinda bougie from the outside, but has a very comfortable friendly vibe inside. Sat at the bar, the happy hour is ridiculous amazing. The pizza and mussels were ! Jason was our bartender/server- cannot say enough good things about this young guy.
