We arrived for the first time to this restaurant interested in the building and its historical background but to our surprise, we found one of the best Italian restaurant in the area. Delicious Italian food with a relax atmosphere, even though we didn't have reservations, we were able to be accommodated in the bar area, which had a very friendly and amicable vibe. The service was above and beyond of what expected, with a great selection of drinks and cocktails. Definitely our new spot in Oceanside. read more

I've been wanting try this place for some time and a friend and I decided to stop by on a FRI night in the middle of the high tourist season. We had to sit outside because the place was packed, but the experience was still great. We ordered drinks right away. My friend got the signature cocktail Lisa Bella and loved it. I got a local Hazy IPA which was perfect. They have local rotating handles of a lager, IPA, Hazy IPA and Pilsner so you can always get the type of beer you want from one of the fantastic local breweries. We ordered the Insalata Verde to start and it was really great. A fairly simple salad but the mix of tart goat cheese with the candied pecans and the vinaigrette, was a great way to start the meal. For entrees, we ordered the meat lovers pizza and the paparadelle with mushroom pasta and both were incredible. The pizza dough might be my favorite of all time. It's soft and gooey and wonderful. The meatball and pepperoni were also top shelf. The pasta was clearly made fresh and the texture and all the flavors mixed perfectly. We finished with their house made daily tiramisu. Now tiramisu is probably my favorite dessert and I consider myself a bit of an expert on it and this was some of the best I've ever had. Truly amazing stuff. The food was absolutely amazing, the service was beyond excellent, and I truly enjoyed the vibes of this restaurant. I would highly recommend all of the dishes we tried: the Insalata Di Rucola (light and refreshing with a mix of avocado and the crunch of roasted almonds), the Calamari Fritti was light and fresh and paired wonderfully with the dipping sauce, the Bruschetta (chopped fresh tomatoes and burrata over warm toasted bread), the the Rigatoni Con Salsiccia E Funghi (pasta was cooked perfectly and the sauce was spectacular!!) We finished it off with a delicious pepperoni pizza with spicy honey and a delicious tiramisu for dessert. I would 100% come back here again and try the other dishes that they offer! read more

We took a little family trip to Oceanside a couple weeks ago and wanted to get dinner somewhere nice but not uncomfortable for our two small kids (or the diners around them). Blade 1936 seemed to fit the bill, and I made a reservation on OpenTable a couple hours in advance. It was exactly what we wanted. The restaurant was cool and attractive, in a 1936 building that once housed an Oceanside weekly called the Blade-Tribune (hence the name, which I thought was strange for an Italian restaurant). The interior was spacious and modern, with very high ceilings. It was a Saturday night, and the place was pleasantly bustling--fun for us, while still appropriate for a family outing. At one point, our two-year-old was standing on his high chair playing with the cap on our wine bottle, and I think we were the only people who noticed. Service was great, prompt and friendly. We had beverages on the table within minutes of sitting down: kid-safe water cups for the boys and a bottle of house Montepulciano for Mom and Dad, about $40 and easy to drink. The food was quite tasty. We started with the prosciutto burrata appetizer and a Margherita pizza for the kids. The prosciutto and burrata were solid quality, and there was plenty of both, served with soft flatbread. The pizza was satisfying, with a good crust, topped with tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, and fresh basil. The pastas were great, too. I got the linguine alla vongole, with clams, garlic, parsley, cherry tomatoes, and white wine sauce. My husband had the ravioli di carne salsa di formaggi, beef ravioli in a very rich, creamy sauce made with gorgonzola, provolone, and parmesan. We really enjoyed our time in Oceanside and hope to come back for another low-key getaway. I'd happily revisit Blade 1936 and would recommend it to just about anyone. It's a casual Italian joint with good food and ambiance, the kind of place that gets lots of play in our restaurant rotation. read more

I was invited into the kitchen by Chef Angelo before the restaurant opened, and what a surprise! The kitchen was absolutely spotless--from the countertops to the floors, even the bottom of the pans . Everything was incredibly well organized and clean, which honestly makes me feel very comfortable continuing to dine here. The cleanliness standards alone deserve a 5+ rating. Visited Blade 1936 for Father's Day with a group of 9 people. We made reservations and we're able to start with drinks from their happy hour menu. Our server was Jade and she was so great, very friendly, attentive and accommodating! Ambience was nice, but kinda wish they had some music playing since the private room is a big echo-y. Everybody loved their food!! My pasta bolognese was delicious and my husband enjoyed his veal with mashed potatoes and veggies. I also ordered tiramisu to go and it was a nice treat. Our third time to Blade 1936, so this review is overdue. The service is first-rate, just as many others have stated. The food has also been consistently wonderful. This time we enjoyed the date-night menu offered on Wednesday evenings, which includes an appetizer, two main dishes, a dessert, and a bottle of house wine - currently for $85. Given the quality of the food and wine, that's quite a bargain. We'll keep going back! read more

Bib Gourmand has missed the mark. Although ratings at a nearby restaurant are accurate, the real gem in Oceanside is The Blade. We have been blessed to travel the world to dine at fine restaurants. The Blade is among the best we have visited. We always appreciated the outstanding customer service and of course the food offerings. So I'm going to share insider information...there is a limited secret menu that is amazing. Available on the days when the Chef is present. What a lovely night... Sara was our server and she was fabulous. She is from Italy so it started our meal off on a perfect note. We loved all of her recommendations. We started with and shared the Arancini Siciliani which was yum yum. The we ordered 2 pastas and shared. We had the Gnocchi Alla Sorrentina (honestly some of the best gnocchi I've ever had) You know your in good hands when the owner makes his way to your table to see how your experience was and then takes the time to tell you about all the wonderful imported items he brings in to make it the most authentic it can be. We went here for a large event that had about 50 people and this could have been reason why their food and service was subpar but that said I've been to restaurants that host large groups and had a great experience so I think planning was not done with Blade 1936. So please keep in mind this review is for a large party. We had a preset menu of a five course meal. The menu on paper sounded delicious. But unfortunately everything that came out was not good. Everything came out cold. And I mean cold, not warm but cold. The staff kept forgetting our table, so while everyone was already eating we were left waiting an extra 10 mins. And when we would ask where our food was, they would said "oh you haven't got it?" I ordered an espresso and even that came out cold! As we were finishing it courses they also neglected to clean out the finished dishes. So we had piles of plates. definitely unappetizing. Would I go back? Probably not. read more

A lifetime local giving the review here. The restaurant is Blade Tribune themed. I was a newspaper carrier for that newspaper when I was a kid here. So unexpected and fun to see that! I had no idea when I went there. It looks kinda bougie from the outside, but has a very comfortable friendly vibe inside. Sat at the bar, the happy hour is ridiculous amazing. The pizza and mussels were ! Jason was our bartender/server- cannot say enough good things about this young guy. So attentive and super on it, even when he got slammed by a whole lotta people coming in at once. Definitely a place I would recommend. Tourists and Locals gonna be happy here. read more

My dish was very delicious, I had the dish with the shrimp in the picture attached. It was 100/100 amazing!! I will definitely return to have the pasta. Just read Chef Angelo's bio online and now I know why the food is so delicious. You can taste the passion in every bite. My favorite appetizer's are the Arancini, Polpettini Della Nonna and the Fried Ravioli. My husband always orders the Steak or the Fish for dinner. For me, it's the pasta. Yum!!! The location is an historic building which was once the home to The Blade Tribune (1936-1963). The owner gives credit to his wife for the fun decor which is perfect. We are from Arizona and we are so excited this restaurant has survived the pandemic. We visited 7 years ago and I was so excited to see it was still here upon our return. We just had dinner on our first night and it was even better than I remembered. They do have a new chef, Angelo, he greeted us at the door and sat us down at a magnificent table. The food is absolutely amazing and authentic. The place is so cool with a great history. It's the original location of the Blade Tribune from 1936. I love history like that. Beautiful people and beautiful space. Our waiter Evan went above and beyond. Service was great from the moment we walked through the door. The owner, Donia, even came over and asked how we were doing and if everything was going well. I can't say enough about how amazing this restaurant is. I highly recommend it for friends and family. As a local who has supported Blade for years, I was extremely disappointed by how our party of eight was treated. We made a reservation and were told we could order from the Happy Hour menu, but that promise wasn't honored. Instead, we were asked to split up at separate tables, and even after speaking with managers, no effort was made to help. We were essentially told it would be better if we left. We went to Finley's instead and had a great experience. Sadly, after this treatment, we won't be returning, and those of us who recommend restaurants to our rental guests will be removing Blade from our lists. read more

We came in on a busy weekend night, and got seated in the overflow section, which honestly just seemed like a large storage room in the back of the restaurant, so already the ambience in relation to the higher prices for a supposedly more upscale Italian restaurant were at odds. Ordered two dishes: the braised beef in red wine sauce, which turned out somewhat inedible because the texture more resembled meatloaf and lacked that rich stew flavor. Fortunately, they did allow us to send the dish back (somewhat reluctantly - mind you, this is the first time I've ever actually sent a dish back!), and took that off the bill. Next up was the grilled octopus, which was a solid 4 stars. This was a good octopus - good, but not great. Overall, I would rate this restaurant between 3-4 stars. Maybe we should've ordered the pizza (which appears to be their specialty), instead of the entrees. read more

My wife and I met the owner of the restaurant Kim, at dinner at another restaurant and he invited us to come and enjoy a free dessert if we ever stopped by. First coming in we were greeted by the hostess and they took us straight to our table. The overall restaurant has an overall homie vibe. There was an outdoor patio, back side seating area and inside bar sitting area. There were TVs and the clippers game was on, so I was enjoying the vibe. We decided to do a pasta which my wife chose which was a seafood spaghetti, which came out pipping hot at the same time with the pizza which was the Gorgonzola pizza which I really enjoyed with the blue cheese. Our appetizer the calamari was not too battery and the marinara was delicious, it had little cut onions in there which made it flavorful. About half way through dinner Kim stopped by and asked if we been here before, and I mentioned we met last time at dinner which he did say he did remember us. He checked to see if we still had the card he gave us which offered the free dessert which was a tiramisu. I said sure did, he said make sure your waiter sees the card and we'll get you that dessert. Kim is super nice and as the dinner rush came in and got busier he was walking around greeting everyone and checking in with everyone, to me that shows an owner is dedicated to his work and wants to make sure everyone who eats there feels like family. He explains to everyone the ingredients he gets comes directly from Italy and going there myself I can feel the authenticity.
