My ribeye had too much fat and was tough. I expected it to be of a better quality for the price.

I must of gone on an off night. We went on an early Saturday night. We both ordered steaks. The salad buffet was very underwhelming. Lettuce wasn't crisp, the bean salad tasted off. The service was some snotty guy with thick glasses. I saw him smoking outside when we walked in, then he was at our table right away. There was no way there was time for him to clean his hands....ew. Then the steaks. My mom's steaks come out burnt, she ate it anyways. And mine was...I had to send it back twice. And MAN, they just gave us so much attitude. I am not going to buy a steak that's medium well, when I ordered medium rare. Then the next time they sent it, it was black and blue. It was a complete mess, what made it worst was the ATTITUDE. I don't usually send stuff back unless it's really bad. Also, the grill should be cleaned per order. Why? So it doesn't have that gross burnt old taste from other orders. Which the steaks so lovingly had. Go walk by the grill to see for yourself the crusted burnt leftover meats on the grill. And I wasn't impressed with the steak at all. The third steak sent, I lost my appetite. I won't be back. They need to learn the temperature gauge. We go here almost every time I am out this way visiting my folks, and it is always a good meal. From the grilled garlic toast that you get almost immediately after sitting down, to the desserts at the end of the meal, the food never disappoints. It's all good. A hearty salad bar that goes with every meal, and a flame grill that's right out in the open so you can see them cooking your steak to perfection. I think Peter, one of the owners, knows my Dad and his wife. Everytime we walk in, we get a loud and jovial greeting from Peter, who is usually behind the grill. Or maybe he does that for all of his guests? Not sure, but he also usually stops by our table to tell us tales of his golf outings. He's a real character, and his stories are always hilarious. The decor in this place is outstanding, too. It reminds me of an old school Wisconsin Supper Club. Not fancy, but not low brow either. I imagine this is the kind of place Al Capone might have brought his family to back in the day. Decided to give Blackhawk Steak Pit a try while in Oregon for a weekend without the kids. Arriving at 5:30 on a Saturday we were seated right away. We were given Texas toast to start off with...awesome! I had the bacon wrapped scallops and my wife had the salmon. Each entree came with the salad bar. The salad bar was nothing special, but our entrees were great and served the perfect temperature. We left feeling satisfied! The only reason I cannot give a five star rating was our waitress. While attentive to our needs, she did not seem very excited about serving us. I heard other waiters around us give their customers more information, such as upgrades to the standard baked potato or rice, and they seemed generally more excited about their job. But beyond that if you are in Oregon I would recommend dropping by here for dinner! read more

This is a family favorite. The owner, Peter, is very welcoming and made us feel right at home. He interacted with all of us and put a smile on all our faces, especially my three girls. The seats were very comfortable and the grill chef cooked the steaks in plain view. The garlic bread was delicious and their portions are very generous. So this is probably one of the best restaurants in Oregon - which mind you is a very small town - but truly this place is good! Make sure to try their strip steak and shrimp scampi - SO GOOD! The ambience of the Steak Pit is totally 70's swank. The steaks are awesome, the lamb chops are phenominal, the alligator app is pretty good, the scallops leave nothing to be desired, the saganaki is the best I've ever had. I'm typically the person that would rather cook my own steak at home, this is the only exception. It's owned by two brothers, John & Peter. John is a very subdued, well mannered and courteous host. And then there is Peter. Loud, boisterous, maybe even a bit crass, but all in fun. He will make sure males in your party are dejected, females praised and that all are entertained. The food is huge and delicious! They even have a salad bar that has all of the fix-ins that you would ever need. This place was an interesting location. They cook the steaks in the middle of the restaurant for the most part. I found it a little unsanitary that the chefs were eating while cooking. Our server was definitely friendly and patient with us, however it seemed she lacked a lot of knowledge on products, such as the wine and steaks. I think this place was a little pricy for the atmosphere. The salad bar wasn't the best, tucked away in the corner and very, very average. It's an okay spot overall, I'm in the middle for returning or not. I most likely would try a new place over this spot. This is the place to go if you want the best steak in Northern Illinois, if not all of Illinois! The new owner Tiffany has brightened the place up and really kept everything else the same (no need to change a good thing!). The best steak on the menu is the filet. You will not be disappointed with any other cuts but the filet is phenomenal. They have many choices for sides, I prefer the Mac and cheese! Its homemade and a great compliment to a perfect steak! Another favorite is the mashed sweet potatoes! I have seen a few comments stating that the salad bar isn't anything special, I feel this is selling it a bit short. You have plenty of options to make a good salad and they also offer potato salad and macaroni salad that are both delicious. Don't fill up on the salad bar because you will want to finish your entire meal! We are from the suburbs of Chicago, so are used to high quality restaurants that are easily available. We ordered alligator bites appetizer which was like a very tough Chicken nugget...... House red wine- very very sweet..... For entrees, I had Grouper, which was nicely seasoned and delicious. My husband had a rib eye, nicely seasoned and a large portion. It was a little tough, but he did manage to eat the entire 16 oz piece. I had a couple of tastes, one beautiful and tender, the next tough. Our family was staying at the Paddle Wheel Inn for a wedding last weekend. We were all tired from the long drive there and just wanted to eat. Luckily, the Blackhawk Steak Pit was at the other end of the parking lot. We'd heard good things and our party of nine went for dinner. They happily accommodated us. We all ordered something different; steak and lobster, fried shrimp basket, pork chops, shish Kabob and cheeseburgers. Every thing was grilled/fried to perfection. Everything about this place is superb. I almost think you have to get a steak when you go. Fantastic! My wife had the Ribeye which took out my Filet but both were well above average. We also had the shrimp cocktail for appetizer - shrimp as big as your head - and was delicious as well. Complimentary salad bar included- bonus. Our friend had to remind our waitress 3 times what beer he ordered, we had to remind her twice that we needed more bread. We ate late so it wasn't super busy. I can not say enough about this place. Their steaks are amazing and always cooked perfect to temperature. Their seafood specials may be the best outside of Chicago's fine dining restaurants (that charge a lot more). And let's not forget their sides and appetizers (or salad bar), the Alligator bites are out of this world!! The staff is always pleasant and helpful, making your visit as pleasant as it should be. This place has been around for a long time and "back in my day" it was really good. Loved the flaming goat cheese, it was such a treat to see it go up in flames as a kid. Now days, my parents have rediscovered this place under it's new ownership and they visit often. I am happy that they have found a place to call their own but personally, I am not a fan. We went once to give it a new try... I ordered scallops and they were not cooked (so yuck). My son ordered a hamburger patty of some sort and it was bloody raw (gross). The bread is very, very hard. The lighting is so dim that it is difficult to see especially when you first walk in. The salad bar was nothing to write home about either. This was all in one visit. It was my last visit to date. Dinner here last night again. We are addicted; drive 35 miles to get here. The owner: awesome. The chef: none better. The food: to die for. The waitstaff: prompt, attentive, friendly, genuine. If you haven't been here for awhile you owe it to yourself to try it, especially since the new owner took over. (I would say any negative posted reviews earlier than fall of 2013 are no longer valid.) She has really ramped up the fresh seafood selection; escargot is her recipe as is the loaded baked potato. Both to die for. We could just as easily drive into Oak Brook or Schaumburg to Morton's or Capital Grill, but will take this place over them any day of the week. When my Mom suggested we go out for a steak dinner in my brother's tiny town I was skeptical. Boy, was I impressed with the Blackhawk Steak Pit restaurant in Oregon, IL. All six of us enjoyed our meals at this quaint steakhouse. We started with the bacon wrapped scallops and flaming greek cheese as appetizer. Both were amazing. My filet mignon was among the top filets I've had in any city in the US. It was savory, well-cut, and cooked to perfection. It's important to point out my steak was a 10 oz filet, not a 6 or 8 oz like many restaurants serve. Our server was prompt, attentive, and friendly. My husband enjoyed some of the unique offerings on the beer menu. I truly enjoyed an amazing meal and would definitely return the next time I'm anywhere near Oregon, IL. As steak houses go, this one has gone from subpar to superb under new ownership. The cuts are generous and well cooked by the chefs. A recent porterhouse was over an inch thick and cooked a perfect medium rare. A good variety of sides are offered, the cooked vegetables are a good choice. The bar offers plentiful drinks and the wait staff are attentive. Supper clubs are a dying breed and everyone should experience this style of restaurant once in their life. read more
